  • Stretching the wheelbase for extra comfort was the recipe behind this 1949 Studebaker Land Cruiser - and Toyota’s super-sized FJ40 SUV spin-off. But which one came first? And what happened to folks who purchased Studebaker stock just before the South Bend shutdown? It’s all right here.

Another great video Steve. As a boy I thought Studebaker‘s were strange and stodgy . now at 62 years of age I think they have more character than any other SUV load plowing down the road. maybe 100 hp gave folks time to enjoy the ride and scenery ,instead of people now racing with 300 hp just trying to get through the trip. Indeed simpler times.

That Stude has the Borg Warner Overdrive, I noticed the relay for it on the firewall. I'm a big fan of those transmissions, they were used by almost every manufacturer back in that time, but Studebaker had the most of them. Great transmissions.

It is a 48, not a 49. The 49's had two section taillights, the 47/48 had four section taillights. The glass grill mounted signal lights were new for '48/ The 47's did not come stock with signal lights.
The 48 was the car in which my brother came home from the hospital. I was born two years earlier and didn't make it to the hospital. I was born in the rear seat of a '37 Studebaker "Dictator" and therefore always a big fan of the Company!

In 85 me and my friends were getting our driver's license as we turn 16 that year and my buddy's brother had one that he had put a Chevy 400 in and changed the rear end and it was handed down to him and we used to outrun everything in it, i did some free hand pinstriping on it for him and I took the emblems off and made it into the doodiebaker, it was brown and looked like a turd. Lol. The wiring was halfass done and it would just stop and take a break when it wanted to 😂 and the reared was a Plymouth posi and the car would fly but it also was equally as bad looking. Finally we pulled it in the autobody class we were in behind the high school and bondo, d it up and painted it and it looked good, I repainted the stripes and the doodiebaker on the sides and back, two months ago I went to my friends house and he still has it in his basement and we poured some gas in the carb and fired it up and did doughnuts in the field beside his house lol. His wife came out and made us stop and told me to go home until I could act right lol, it was kinda like a flashback cause his mom used to come out of the same house and tell me that exact same thing, lolol. I made him a offer for it and I think he's gonna sell it to me Monday

The Land Cruiser was a body code "Y" in 1949. I always found their vehicles to be a bit stodgy, but that's just my two cents. The body tag is just out of view on the right side firewall. Possible code 8303 Midnight Blue exterior paint.
I remember starting out in automotive parts and those older fuel pumps could be rebuilt with kits. At the time, "Motor Laboratories" was one company that did it. A quick lookup even at that time revealed it was part of KEM Manufacturing in Fair Lawn, NJ. They were located at 18-35 River Road.
A quick funny story is that I interview there around 1998-2000 while working for another parts manufacturer at the time. I quickly got an interview with them, to which the hiring manager gave me a "competency test". I had just finished my MBA, so I was still "school and test sharp" with those types of skills, and I easily passed. Then the interview started, but it was more of a fishing expedition with questions such as, "How do you do your catalog?" "What systems do you use?" "How do you do new products and introduce new items?" "Who does your competitive interchanges?" With that, I realized it was nothing more than a fishing expedition, but I let the interviewer talk.
When he said, "Ok, I'm done..." (and trying to end the interview) I said, "Well I have some questions for you." With that I turned into a fishing expedition, but only to find out if the job was real or not and what the job would entail.
I didn't get the job and I later found out why....my current salary at the time was much more than the hiring manager was making and willing to offer me. All the better, as KEM went out of business in 2005, about the same exact time as I started my current job. There's a bank and other businesses on that property now. Yes, Delco was part of GM by the time that Studebaker was made.

Studebaker afficionado her. I almost missed this one as I was out of the country. Excellent and highly accurate video. The underfloor master cylinder is, as you said, most inconvenient. Unfortunately, Studebaker kept it long after, as in my 1955 President. The vacuum wipers are infamous but electric wipers were offered on some models as early as 1941. The difference of four inches in the wheelbase is not enough to really distinguish the Land Cruiser from the Commander by a cursory glance. A spotting tip is to look for the small window behind the rear door rolldown window. Only the Land Cruiser has them. Great video, thanks again.

Only 100 hp for all that weight, for sure not a speed demon, but I can envision that boat cruising down the road, just rolling over any bumps and potholes without a problem. 🇨🇦👍

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 ปีที่แล้ว

Probably not as bad as you'd think - we've gotten spoiled by rising hp numbers in the last decade or so. Top speed for a car back then was usually somewhere between 75 and 80 mph - but the lower gearing meant they didn't drive badly despite the low power (low by today's standards, anyway.) But most cars back then were designed for cruising along country roads at about 40-45, rather than the more common 55 or more we see these days. Remember, in the late '40s the huge interconnected network of high speed interstates we all enjoy now was just getting started.
To compare: the '49 Stude specs out with a top speed of 85 mph (87 if you got the 4-speed), a weight of close to 1 3/4 ton, and a 0-60 of 17.7 secs. A '49 Chev Fleetline looks to be a comparable-sized 4-door car, is about 200 lb lighter, but with a top speed of only 73 mph, and a 0-60 of 21.6 secs. Makes the Stude look to be pretty swift by the standards of the day, both in acceleration and in high speed cruising.

Got to give some love to the orphan cars. To anyone who cares, people didn't go west in a Conestoga wagon like the movies. That was a frieght wagon. They used regular farm size wagons. Studebaker made a lot of those for the army as well as regular people. Some were locally made. The Conestoga is another Hollywod thing. Although in the 1950s mom and dad could have loaded up the kids in a Studabaker wagon for a vacation in the west. Probably quite a few traveled Route 66.

Was the term horse power a studebaker discovery?

      “larryroberts4984”:
The term [horsepower] effectively compares how much work a horse can do per unit of time (as early as 1702), & was adopted in the late 18th century by Scottish engineer James Watt to compare the output of steam engines with the power of draft horses:
