    When I first beat Orochi I thought the game was over, and I was content.
    Then I actually shed a few tears during the scene near the ark. You all know the one. This was my first and only time. I fought my tears and lost.
    This game is perhaps my favourite game period.
    Not sure why I noticed this video so late. TH-cam is...undependable. But I just wanted to let you know I enjoy your videos, your wacky sense of humour, and your stories. I clicked the bell.

      Okami is such a beautiful game, and I don't mean just visually. They have a lot of really good moments in there, most of which I'm sort of sad I had to skim over because they all probably deserve more attention. I know I teared up a few times just making this video.

      I knew what happened at the end of Okami because of a Let's Play I watched before, thinking I'd never get to play this game. But then, when I did play it, I still cried at the end. That's the power of this game.

    Sober the beginning of the video legitimately saddened me, but just like Okami, your work may not be the most commercially known, but you have those who love what you do very much.

      @Otneimica Yeah, I know it's just a film. But I do also think there's another point to be made about the mechanically produced Halo, CoD, etc vs stuff like Okami. Artistry vs just a product to consume. Of course this system is about profit so Okami was technically that too. But I think that without the need to maximize profit there could be a lot of cool games like Okami.

    Reset is also commonly thought to be from Issun's POV, as he never truly said goodbye to Ammy and would would like to meet her again under their favorite cherry tree (Sakuya). It's also worth noting that an acoustic version of Reset (highly recommend giving it a listen. It's called "Reset (thank you)") played during the cutscene in the Yami fight where Issun helps you out in your darkest hour (Pun intended). I really like what you got from the song though, and the double meaning will only add to my enjoyment of the song.

    I loved Okami when it came out. I was playing it at my job. I got it on my ps2, my Wii and just recently I decided to get it on the switch and go on the adventure again. It’s been long enough that it feel fresh again. I love painting and drawing so the brush techniques were so much fun. I’m also a big plant and planet person. I see trash in our world and trees being cut down and it hurts. But every time I saw the cursed land washed in a tidal wave of beautiful flowers and trees after healing the guardian trees I would cry. I would wish our world could be healed so beautifully. The music made it hit my heart a little harder.
    It is truly beautiful and so much fun.
    People really missed out on this and I hope more people can play it now on switch and appreciate its beauty.

    Since I was 12, up to this very day, Okami has been my favorite game of all time.
    One day while searching for Wii games at Blockbuster, I saw the cover of Okami on one of the shelves. I didn’t even really read anything on the back, I just asked if I could rent it cause I thought the art looked really cool. I had never played a game that allowed me as much control over the surrounding world before, so as soon as I learned the slash technique, I was instantly hooked. I began renting Okami over and over and OVER again. There would be some weeks where I didn’t even rent any games cause the only one I wanted to play was Okami and someone else had rented it out that time. My parents eventually had enough and said “listen. If you have the allowance and can find it, we will pay for half of the game ourselves”. They had probably spent enough on rentals at that point to buy multiple copies of the game, so they figured they might as well just help me get it.
    I am, and will forever be grateful to Hideki Kamiya and Clover(basically platinum) studios for making the greatest game of all time.

    Okami is a game that will never age visually. Never. Its 12 years old, and its still stunning to watch. This is its greatest achievement in my eyes. How many games from 12 years back hold up today? And I don't mean looking through nostalgia glasses but games that REALLY hold up today. That if you showed it to someone he'd said "This game was made when??".

    I really love the self-aware context here. Its not a rant or a sob story, its a statement that goes hand in hand with the history of Okami. If I had half the following you did Id signal boost the heck out of your videos. But even without that, I know a few friends who will find this and some of your other stuff a great watch. Keep it up because there are plenty of people out there who will love your channel when they eventually find it.

    Interesting insight on the lyrics of "Reset". Without really thinking about it I personally associated them with Issun and how he never had a chance for proper goodbyes.

      Most likely that was probably the actual intention. I had always thought the tone was a little off to be Issun exactly, but it makes sense. However, some of the best works of art will have different interpretations to different people and it really seemed to strike a chord after I learned about what was going on with Clover and Hideki Kamiya, and it could have easily have been both. Life often inspires art, after all. This video is proof of that!

    Hey man, I recently got Okami HD for the PS4 for $12 when it went on sale and played through it because I had heard good things - but never played it originally on the PS2. I really fell in love with it. Even as you hammered on more of the thematic elements that make it great, the fact it's a charming and whimsical adventure with Issun who manages to be an entertaining companion was something I felt needed a bit more attention. Really solid video though man, hope you keep making videos!

    I only just came across your channel today, when the video popped up on Tumblr. Okami is my favorite game, despite its flaws and weird quirks, but I think you hit the nail on the head about all of it. I especially loved your analysis of Reset, and I personally think its inclusion was for the purpose of encapsulating the feeling of the game. I remember beating the game and hearing the first wistful beats of the song start up, and despite not knowing any Japanese, the raw emotion of it all made me break down.
    I think Okami has a line similar to the reasoning Hideki Kamiya had at the end: before entering the Ark, Waka says, "Life is all about resolve. Outcome is secondary." I think that's a good life philosophy--put your all into doing something, but don't worry about the success or failure. Just do it.

      Reset is such a beautiful song, both the vocals and the "Thank You" version (which in itself, makes me tear up because I sort of innately imagine that's Clover Studio saying 'Thank You' to fans.) I didn't fully understand Japanese either the first time I heard it from the OST. At the time, it didn't make sense. I was roughly about 80% finished with my play through with Okami but I had put it down and didn't pick it back up, but I loved the soundtrack. The lyrics seemed a bit off at the time, even considering it relating to Issun, but I still loved it. Once I started making the episode about it though and looking into just how pained the development was, it sort of 'clicked'. Whether that was the intention or just a coincidence, I'm not certain, but art is ultimately about interpretation anyway.
      But yes, I totally agree with you that. I sort of wonder how much Hideki Kamiya had put himself in the story because it really seems like there are strong marks of his philosophy littered throughout. Which is good because I think you have to put a little bit of yourself in your creations.

      Thank you for your wonderful comment! I always try to make the content I produce relate to something in some way. Not always to this extent, but for me it just isn't enough to give a bunch of facts, because at that point the information is just trivia. I rather have something that allows people to "take the story home with them" so to speak, because that's ultimately more important.

    Okami is one of those real weird cases. Even back with the PS3 rerelease, sales combined in its history were about just touching 1million, and that's got to also include double/tripple dippers like myself. However the thing I love is that Okami was never just a passing and forgotten game. Any other game selling like that, or heck even some better sold, by another team or project would just be left to old memory and retro gamers. Instead somebody at Capcom keeps slapping it on every new system that comes out, but additionally the merchandising is insane. Cups, statues, shirts, paintings, books, for a game that apparently didn't sell well as a budget release, you could pay up to a car's worth in obtaining all the stuff around it. They know this thing was a work of art with a loving fanbase, and they know there's a demand to keep it somewhere in production. The amount of times I see its imagery is nearly on par with RE and Street Fighter, at least in my own anecdotal understanding. Its out there, because unlike the EA types that slowly killed and hide away even a hit like Deadspace, there's something going on with the affinity around Okami and its publisher and makers that keep it loved, exactly as if it were an ancient myth itself to be restored for the quiet few listening and needing that beautifully crafted tale again and again.

    i'll be honest, i agree with ALL of the things you said in the video, and in the end... i actually cried a little... not for all of the bad things Ōkami devs and game selling went trough, but for your words and way of explaining how a developer as Kamiya and a game as Ōkami can actually strive forward and reach success, Ōkami is and will always be my favourite video game, not only for its general design, story, characters or everything it has, but for all the backstory and the long road it has.
    Thank you for this amazing piece of content, im actually really grateful for founding this video and your channel, such an amazing work and dedication is sure to be appreciated at its time (just like those 2 mill copies for Ōkami HD WOOP).

    this was a beautiful analysis, right down to the ending credits song. i've been struggling a lot lately with feeling like a failure and just not good enough to go on with life. your words about Okami's lack of commercial success and Kamiya's attitude about challenging himself while he has a good environment for it, really spoke to me. thank you.

    This video is nicely edited, it’s the kind of production value that will help you reach more success I think, you’ve come a long way since the first video I watched on your channel, the one about FF Mystic Quest.
    Your videos have always been an important addition as a game dev.
    This new video about Okami linked to your personal doubts as a creator resonated with me too.
    Been years since I’m working on an indie RPG with a pretty high production value (especially back when I started prototyping etc) and despite the fact Square Enix recently selected me for curation and good things like that, it still feels like it’s not enough to get any kind of good funding, I mean my numbers are still quite low… Or maybe I’m way too terrified to take the leap.
    I don’t know you tell me, I’d love an honest first impression, you’ll find my last teaser on my chan.
    (Sorry I had to edit/repost that message, I originally put the video directly but the post doesn’t work if I do that.)
    Keep holding on, I’ll ask my friends to drop some likes here and there, I wish I could do more. Maybe it would be a good idea to review some popular games from time to time… To drive more attention and convert some of these new viewers into subscribers. It wouldn’t mean being some kind of “Game Theory” talking about FNAF, Mario and Pkmn all the time but what I’m thinking is for example… Final Fantasy 6.
    Not just mentioning FF6 because it’s my fav RPG ^__^ but that title would bring more subs for sure.
    I’m well known on a popular FF6 fan group on FB (because of my game being some kind of illegitimate child of FF6 and Zelda3) so if you do that video I’ll definitely share it as a good way to introduce your channel, you’d probably get at least some members as new subscribers. Well that’s my 2 cents.

      Found this video and SoberDwarf thanks to the last video from SSFF and then when catching up on older videos I remembered you told me in a comment to check his FF MQ Remake video, and then boom I check this last Okami one and see your comment, this is way too much coincidences for my brain lol.
      I hope Koruldia’s development is going well, this is indeed the kind of game that guy would love.
      But I don’t understand in the intro here he said he’s quitting TH-cam because of a lack of success (like this Okami video is a goodbye?) but then at the end he says he has video to make and I found it confusing because I don’t know if he’s talking about videos for that channel or unrelated videos.

      Sorry for the late reply in regards to this!
      Though, to be fair, this isn't something I can answer for you. Though I would definitely encourage you to do, because your work is absolutely amazing and you managed to get some following, however small, and it can only get bigger and not smaller. Besides, you like FFVI so you already have a good taste in RPGs, so most of the odds are in your favor. And you definitely have talent.
      But it is one of those things that you have to choose for yourself, because only you know how important it is for you and how far you are willing to go to see it through the end.
      I did have that conundrum with my channel not to long ago. Around Oct of 2016, I was working 70 hours a week at a full-time go nowhere job that wasn't paying me very much and not a lot of opportunities to go elsewhere. I think at that time my channel was around 250 subs, by no means in any place for someone to sanely commit to quitting a job and going full-time on the channel. I did it though, because I just wanted to see if I could. I had plenty of doubts and fears, and I thought by all means that I would fail, even expected too, but I did it just for the experience. I kept trying to make it work, even when all I had to eat was bread past the expiration date, but I just kept trying. While it might not be a huge channel by any means, I'm proud of what I did and it inspires me to keep going, and it afforded me a lot of opportunities. I still might not make it as a TH-camr, but to me, it was worth it just because of the experience itself and with all the problems and risks, I'm passionate enough about what I'm doing to work through them.
      But I'm also very lucky, I don't discount just the random success I had at the right place at the right time. But you really don't know until you try. But know I'll be wish all the success for you, because with what I see, it looks like you put a lot of love into it and it deserves that!

      I definitely meant I was making more videos. The meta-narrative was that in the beginning I was going to quit, but after seeing Okami's story, of how it failed, yet despite that, Kamiya later ended up moving on to make more games and never gave up, meant that I shouldn't either. After all, I'm in good company.

    It always broke my heart to know that Okami, one of my top favorite games of all time, failed financially. I'm happy that it eventually found success, but I wish it hadn't come so late. Okami deserved so much more. I've done my part, though. I got the game on PS2, PS3, PS4, PC, and am about to get it on Switch. I got a few friends into it back in the PS2 days, and I always tell as many people about it as I can. I have at least one friend now who says he'll get it on Switch. My love for Okami is just as strong as ever, if not more so now that I can really see how great it is from a critical perspective, and I will always support it however I can.

    You may not have the number of views or subscribers that you deserve, but you've certainly earned a lot of respect and admiration from your existing fans! I can't imagine the amount of research that goes into making these videos. Your talent, style and ambition is greatly appreciated, don't ever forget that.
    I was one of those who got Okami when it first released on the PS2... in Europe. February 2007. And I loved it. The only major complaint I have about the game is the length, it's too long for its own good. Couple that with the long stretches of exposition, and getting through the game could become a bit of a slog. But the different scenarios and events, story beats and characters make the journey interesting at every step. It's one of the most complete games I've ever played, nothing's missing, and that is in effect both a blessing and a curse.

      Okami is a bit of a slog, though I agree, think it fits the game as sort of a complete work of art. I think that pace works for the game Okami wanted to be. It's one of those situations where I feel a bit conflicted because I wouldn't want to change it despite me knowing how it can hurt the viewing process.
      It's funny because the intro for this video I had sort of the same problem. I was like "This 3 minute long intro before I get into the video is slow but it tells the story I want to tell, but is it worth maybe discouraging people who just want to hear about the game?" Though I made a minor cut for time, I ultimately kept it for the same reasons. It isn't going to immediately pull in people, but I felt it was more important to the spirit of the video. Sort of a meta-narrative that mirrored Okami itself.

    17:28 Tbh, if you know about Shintoism, the opening cutscene is actually pretty cool because It shows names that you know but weren't expecting to see. And every time they drop a new god name like "Shiranui" or "[Yamata no] Orochi" its pretty interesting to see how they are gonna use it on the story.
    And I think that *telling* instead of *showing* works here because of that AND because this "legend" is actually a gameplay feature, you go back 100 years in the past and experience this fight yourself.

    Okami is all of the things you say in this video. A masterwork. Clover's magnum opus. A seamless whole greater than the sum of its parts. A commercial failure. A modern classic.
    I was piqued by the game from the first stills Electronic Gaming Monthly published in 2004/05, got it for Christmas shortly after release, and I lit up.
    It was everything I had hoped it would be. It out-Zelda'd Zelda. The aesthetic, music, mechanics, and inspirations were unmistakable. It still speaks to me on a fundamental artistic level, not even considering the visceral and intuitive combat.
    I love Okami, always have and always will. With copies on PS2, PS3, and Steam to enjoy for years to come. Easily scraping the top spot of all time favorites.
    Thank you for the video. It's ultimate fate, being killed and shamelessly paraded around like a mascot by Capcom, is insulting. The game deserved a sequel better than Okamiden. We could still hope for a spiritual successor. Perhaps Okami is best preserved and enjoyed on its own: a shining gem set alone.

    I grew up around people that all played FFXI with me and would say Okami was one of their favorite games. It wasn't till much later that I realized how unpopular most of the games my friends and I cherished, really were. They aren't games people haven't heard of, but they are games that most people probably didn't get the chance to fall in love with. So it's been wonderful to find a channel with someone that adores these games as well. Keep talking about games you love man, cause it really shines through in your voice and the effort you put into it.

      I was the same way, I played a ton of games growing up, and it was the sort of thing while I enjoyed games like Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid, I also experienced a lot of games that no one has really even heard of or at least I don't hear talked about all that often. I never really sought out obscure titles, but I think because no one really talked about them, they meant that much more to me.
      I'm just glad I'm offered the opportunity to talk about them so that maybe more people can discover them.

    I never knew Okami was a failure when it first came out. I got it on the Wii for the first time in Christmas of 2009 and when I beat it, I played it again and again. When the HD remakes came out, I bought it again for PS3 and then for the Switch. I have beaten this game 5 times on different consoles and I can say that it’s one of my favorite games. Thank you for the research you put into this video. Okami is a masterpiece to me and I will never forget it. Thank you for your time and wonderful video!

    As i finished watching this video, I remembered that the first video of you that I saw was your review of the Legend of Legaia, one of my all time favorite RPG, and that's when it hit me. The concept of Amaterasu Rejuvenating the Guardian Saplings to free areas from darkness is really similar to the idea of reviving Genesis Trees to banish the Mist. Another fun little trivia that I found today
    Okami is truly a great game. I finished playing it on my friend's PS2, I currently playing it on PS3, and later I will definitely buy the Nintendo Switch version for portability
    And good work on the most touching review of a game that I've ever seen in TH-cam.

      That's actually a good point on the Legaia reference. I wonder if that's a cultural thing because Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles has a similar concept as well, so it seems like a common theme. I mean, it makes sense, the force of nature dissapating pollution and corruption. Actually, regarding that, it relates to FFVII as well.

    I’m sad that it took me this long to find this video, but I’m glad that it exists.
    I wish that more people knew about and loved Okami the way that I do, that I always have.
    From the first time that I played Okami, I fell in love, and it instantly became my favorite game that I’d ever played. Oh, and did I ever play it. I can’t even count how many times I’ve gone through the storyline over and over again, tirelessly. I’ve never known another game that was nearly as artistically beautiful and painterly stylized, I’ve never known a better soundtrack, I’ve never been so enthralled by a story; I even started studying Shintoism out of genuine interest sparked by the game.
    It doesn’t matter what comes out, even now, Okami is my favorite and I can’t get enough of it.

    Glad it isn't the last video! I worked at a video store when this was released. I always thought it did poorly because it was released at the end of the PS2's life and the hype for the next gen PS3/xbox360 overshadowed it (hey same thought you mention!) Wii U perception for me was "gimmicky motion controls" great for sports / party games, not a real RPG gamer console and that's how rentals went too. Marketing was a factor because I never knew about that drawing / restoring nature mechanic, thought it was just an action game with a unique art style, now I know better. Thanks for another well put together design documentary. Think you struck the balance well with personal experience and emotion in this one.

      Yeah, I mean when the game was released (even to this day) Capcom really dropped the ball on marketing, which really confuses me on why they keep releasing it if they never were going to fully market it. I mean, I get that now, Capcom is sort of broke so marketing isn't really in their budget, but back then they were doing fairly well that they could of had at least a few print ads. I don't remember seeing any banners or anything on websites either (though I did manage to access a copy of their 8-bit RPG parody for Okami) but even then they never really explained how the game works or show people why they should play it. Maybe they were just hoping word-of-mouth would be enough?
      I think now Okami sort of has a legacy behind it that it has earned a cult classic status that people now at least know about, similar to Earthbound. I also think Twilight Princess being release the same year might have given Okami a reputation as a game that was cashing in on trends and not really it's own thing (despite it being more enjoyable for me than Twilight Princess). I have no evidence of that being the case though. But hopefully with these HD releases, it will find a second wind. Seems to be working so far.

    found this video late last night when I had my annual Okami craze and this is simply beautiful. this design documentary is 2 years old now but I still want more people to see this!
    I love how this game still makes people emotional to this day and this video made me tear up a bit. I don't think I'll ever have a video game experience like Okami ever again...which saddens me but still makes me proud to know that I was there since its PS2 days because I wanted to play the 'weird japanese game with funny talking people'

    Hey man. I have bought okami on three different platforms. I bought the disk version for PS2, digital for PS3, and recently the digital for Nintendo switch. This game, shadow of the colossus, and last of us (part 1), and maybe red dead redemption for ps2 were the foundations of what I consider to be my best experiences playing video games. I won’t sit here and say I didn’t sink more hours into Skyrim, rdr2, MW1 and 2, overwatch, and several others, but good lord I had a more memorable time with those earlier titles. I know far too many people that say that games like ocarina of time was the pinnacle of gaming but either never heard of, or never gave a shot to Okami. I feel the reverse could easily have been true, that Okami could have been a hallmark of gaming and ocarina of time could have fallen through the cracks. I honestly feel similarly toward Skyrim. Is Skyrim the modern standard for RPGs nearly a decade later? Sure. But re-releases of that game feel shallow. Did you get better water effects? Sure. Better sunbeams? Yeah, probably. But I only got the game on its original disk release because I did it all and I finished it. I bought Okami on newer platforms at semi-regular intervals because I knew I had forgotten a lot of it and I just wanted to play it again. I wanted to cut down mr/mrs cutter. To meet Oki again, to find dogs that I’d met but didn’t know how special they were, to go fishing with a brush. Even just to feed animals I came across felt like a burst of not only nostalgia, but a reminder of how modern games could have been at least influenced. The art style makes it timeless, and the play style is just something I wish still persisted today. To be a ‘best game of the year’ by multiple standards, yet a sales flop, and therefore objective failure by the people funding games feels truly tragic. The people in charge knew exactly how to cater to a player and went above and beyond, making a game that went far beyond expectations and an immersive experience where you were literally a god-wolf. With all the background they curated to make a distinctly unique experience that sticks with you 15 years later that you still itch to play, it’s truly tragic to hear people ask you about one of your most memorable games. “Okami? I’ve never heard of that”.
    Edit: appreciate the quest 64 footage, I don’t think views=quality (kinda the ultimate message, no?) and that you did a fantastic job highlighting the important points of this game and its development. It’s all a crap shoot of who you’re born to, man, and if there’s some capcom exec’s kid that says let’s do a new Okami, then we’ll 1000% at least get another shot at making it as significant as it should have been. I want to thank you for the effort you put into this without the thanks you deserve ( a phrase that would be appropriate in too many situations) and, if you have the time to read this incredibly long winded comment, what do you think failed this potential franchise? Personally I think the voiceovers (if you can call them that) didn’t help, it’s not a particularly fun casual experience, and AT THE TIME, the Japanese aesthetic, folklore and overall Japanese historic era immersion was not as palatable to a non-Japanese audience hurt international purchases. Game was ahead of its time in a lot of ways. If this sold in 2020 as a Switch game with the same aesthetics, music, folklore, etc but maintained modern standards of gameplay and graphics (even with a traditional Japanese art style) it would be an era defining game for the majority of people rather than a minority

      Honestly, I think the biggest issue was that Capcom really didn't produce Okami all that well. I got a distinct feeling there was some major issues behind the scenes with Capcom and Clover Studios, and I feel like whatever was going on behind the scenes had really poisoned any sort of release. Capcom has never really marketed Okami to the audience that I think would really enjoy it, they never really pushed that advantage of being named 'game of the year', the game didn't have a marketing budget compared to other titles Capcom was releasing at the time. Back then, Capcom was aggressive with trying to push their titles, but it feels like they were kinda begrudging against Clover, and I ultimately think that hurt Okami in the long run.
      Now days, I think Okami has done better with the HD rereleases in terms of sales and audience, but still sad that Capcom hasn't done anything with it since Okamiden, because I feel that audience is there. Even if Capcom didn't want to do something in-house, Platinum Games is right there and I feel like they could put together a really, really solid sequel with Kamiya.

    One of my favorite graphics touches with Okami is the bleeding. When you have Amaterasu pass through or over a thick black area on the screen, the "ink" leaves a trail behind her, helping bring that "living painting" feeling Okami succeeded at hitting. I've purchased Okami 3 times, Wii, PS3 and the PC version was a gift to me. I really hope Capcom and Platinum can get a real sequel going to continue the story Kamiya had started.

    To me, Okami is like, "wow, I get to play a game and read a novel at the same time!" Which I'm sure is not what most people want in a game, but me personally, I absolutely love every second of the game, including the opening cutscenes.
    Okami is one of those games I actually don't recommend to most people, because I know they probably wouldn't get it and would give up on it after 10 minutes and write a crappy review or go rant on the subreddit. IDK if anyone else does that, but that's how I am with the games most dear to me, I can't help it, I just don't want to recommend it to anyone unless I'm sure they'll actually appreciate it.
    Honestly I don't consider it a "failure" if something doesn't do well commercially. Some things are just niche. They don't bring any less joy to the people who do enjoy them just because they're not widely enjoyed by everyone.

    I just finished playing Okami HD on the Switch. I had hard time with slow pace at first but then game just captivated me, kept me up at night. It's positively stunning. And your analysis is as well. I think I'm here to stay.
    Sad though apparently credits song was removed and replaced with something else in HD version. It still plays in the final moments when all of the people pray for you but without lyrics being sung.

    The 1st time I cried over a game was when I stepped on and broke my Chopper Command cartridge for my Atari 2600 in the early 80's. I know, out of context. SoberDwarf is the only content creator that I have ever even considered subscribing to. Keep up the great work man.

      I'm really sorry for your loss. The first time I cried during a game was I think the ending of Super Mario RPG. I don't know why, but that ending was sort of beautifully sad for me (it was also the first RPG I ever beat start to finish outside of Mystic Quest.)

      I think when I first heard the ending theme, I was sort of disappointed by the lyrics, because at the time, I didn't really "get it". Looking at other interpretations, for the most part it was universally agreed that it was more of a reference to Issun talking about Ammy, but that explanation didn't really satisfy me. It wasn't until making this video and really looking at its history that the song really sort of connected with me. That might not have been the intention, but after knowing what all had happened with Clover Studio at that point, I finally got it.

    One of my favourite aspects of Okami is how each character, no matter how big, have their own design reflecting a small story. In the artbook is particularly clear how much effort they put in creating the game as a whole.

    So I won a switch at a Christmas party last month, bought okami hd because I saw it on the Nintendo Eshop and recall hearing a lot of praise for it back when it came out and getting a bunch of game awards.
    Finally decided to put down breath of the wild and give this game a chance. I ended up playing a few hours in and really enjoyed the game so far.
    I end up talking about it at work the next day (aka today) and none of my coworkers have ever heard of it. I was under the impression this game was a classic I missed out on. I end up looking the game up and here I am finding out that okami was a hidden gem that did very poorly and now I’m genuinely pretty sad about it. But I’m happy to see
    that everyone from clover moved on to make some big hits.
    I’m really glad I finally picked up this game.

    Great video. I loved your analysis on this game. Two things I really liked was how you were playing 8-but versions of the songs in the background and the “I have no mouth and I must scream” reference (excellent short story)
    It’s sad that it didn’t sell very well. If I wasn’t given the game for Christmas and also the ds game I highly doubt I would have played it and had a connection to the game. It’s kind of funny how a game steeped in Japanese culture, mythology, historical context, and art somehow did better outside of the region where it should have been a success and almost nobody would understand the references.
    I just love it’s art style and how that feeds into the gameplay. I knew that the environments would look different when you lifted their curse but I didn’t notice how they would become more colorful. One of my favorite aspects about the game was the bestiary.
    A few complaints I had with the game (these didn’t really take away from the experience but were small let downs) would have to be how they reused enemies in the 2nd and 3rd part of the game where they just made them stronger (luckily they would add completely different enemies to these areas). After killing the Chrimsin Helm and getting to Orochi I remember thinking “that’s it? I thought there was going to be 7 more of these things based on the different element heads”. The first third of the game felt much more developed and intertwined while the other two felt tacked on (I probably felt this way because there was so much more progression in the first part, more brush techniques, the enemies in later areas were mostly just stronger reskins, and you would go back and forth when you’d get new techniques and talk to the old characters). Even when I was little I noticed the some of the continuity errors present between the ds and original like the tree girl (can’t remember her name) having her original outfit rather than the bikini thing, the enemies looking different from the original ones, in the 100 years before there were new demons that weren’t present in the first game when you go to that same place, and some of the locations having slightly different layouts. I also had trouble with some of the motion controls, but other than those blunders truly amazing game.
    I remember talking with one of my friends at school how it seemed really weird that there was never a sequel other than the ds. I was thinking that it would have been a good idea for there to be a Wii U version that would have the graphics of the original and touch screen controls of the ds. I now realize that there was basically no possibility of that because we were some of the few people who actually had a Wii U so it wouldn’t be commercially viable (out if the 8 people who actually bought the console we are probably the only 2 who actually got the Wii U Star Fox). It would have been fun to have that.
    I actually have never beaten the game so that song at the end was a surprise for me. The song lyrics are pretty sad.
    Are there any good sites or videos that talk about the cut content, historical context, and other aspects about the game? It would definitely be interesting to learn about.

    I really liked this video and thank you for making it.
    I had a vision in my dreams of a wolf that told me I need to go on an adventure with it.
    This made little sense until I realized I had okami in my backlog so I searched for an okami analssys to see what I was getting into. And thus has made me determined to play thus fake to its conclusion so thank you for your efforts brother, I deeply appriciated it!

    Okami is a game I had some interest in, but wasn't too crazy about the brush mechanic, so I never planned on playing it. An upcoming game that has a drawing mechanic that sounds like it's very well implemented is Concrete Genie. Seems like an interesting game, but in general I'm not a fan of drawing mechanics in games. I do like the cel-shaded look of Okami. I love the style of cel-shaded graphics. My favorite cel-shaded game is Aragami. Man that game was fantastic being similar to Tenchu (one of my favorite game series') with cool new mechanics to make it different. Aragami is one of, if not my favorite stealth game I've ever played. But anyway, great video on Okami and I'm glad about your message about not giving up and keep moving forward with your work!

    I really enjoyed this game, with exception of blockhead in game, but other than that this was a good game. I surprised that it didn't do as well. When i heard this game was like zelda but with its own unique style i got this game. I immediately fell in love with the game and i really enjoyed it, the game itself had moments that moved me to tears. I loved the japanese fantasy vibe from this game which was much different than most games i had played before. Shooters, rpgs, jrpgs, platoformers, and few others. They all had unique settings, story, and themes but something like okami was something much different than what i had normally played. I was and still am sad that we never saw a sequal series or another game like okami. This game have special place in my heart.

      I haven't really. I'm friends with Stop Skeletons From Fighting (formally HVGN) and they have mentioned me on twitter or in the comments (the video I show in the beginning is a video I actually edited for them, sort of a in-joke) but I've never approached anyone about them checking out my content. I'm sure that they get tons of messages with the same. Mostly I just encourage others to share if they like the content.
      I do know what you mean. I heard Pat the NES Punk was talking about that. So maybe it's something I should look into.

      Absolutely. It's one of the reasons why I tell myself that it's not the reach, but the impact. You never know who your work will affect and I think Okami is one of those examples of a game that meant a lot to a lot of people even if didn't make the numbers.

    I feel a little odd but I LOVE okami but the reason I like it, despite its slow pace and the annoying habit it has of pointing out the blindingly obvious, the story has the perfect blend of funny and heartrending. I love that your game is based around messing around in the overworld helping all these wacky characters. Ive played it several times (although I end up skipping a lot of the more pointless cutscenes) its not perfect but its so fun.

    My opinion about why Okami failed was Capcom refused to Market it just threw out there without commercials and also they did not release it on the PS3 they released it on the PS2 and the Wii at a time when the PS3 the Xbox 360 was launching. I bought the PS3 HD version and the PS4 version for some reason I am obligated to support this game even though I've never finished it.

      Yeah, there wasn't a bit marketing push for Okami, despite how many times they have rereleased it. I sort of wonder if they hope that word of mouth is what will sell the game. Thankfully with this last set of rereleases, I think it's finally got the recognition it deserved.

    i'm quite surprised to learn that Okami was considered a commercial failure. i saw all kinds of fanart and cosplay for it all over the place as a kid, and i just recently bought the HD remake on the switch two weeks ago, so this info came as a bit of a startle if not a shock. i'm still glad that it exists though, because it continues to serve as an inspiration. indirectly back then, and very directly now.

    Okami was definitely the best zelda game that was ever made, and was definitely one of the best games I've ever played. I like to think of it as a crash course on japanese mythology, and to a lesser extent, japanese culture. And it definitely pushed me to want to learn more about shinto myths. For everything okami exaggerates or outright gets wrong about japanese mythology, it presents it in such a way that is still enjoyable, and might even drive someone to learn the actual myths. But, well, it also just goes to show that a game lives and dies by its marketing, and that's been true for a long time. Okami only now can be considered a success because it spent so long as a diamond in the rough, and enough personalities on youtube who happened to play it talked about it, Chuggaaconroy and Cryotic to name a couple. It's kind of like Xenoblade Chronicles. Aside from its extremely limited release, it had no marketing despite how amazing of a game it was, but enough people who did play it were outspoken enough and spread the game around enough that it gained enough serious traction that, when nintendo ported it to the 3ds, it's no wonder it did so well. I'd even say that its legacy singlehandedly sold xenoblade x and 2 as far as they went, for as little marketing went into those games. You hear about all these indie successes, they don't have any formal marketing but they did so well. And that's simply because of one thing: Free advertising on youtube. With the rise of facecam screaming lets players, indie games didn't need to market to a general audience. They just had to market to an extremely specific niche of influencers who would send their legions of fans to drive the sales numbers of games that otherwise would have been dead in the water due to a lack of marketing funding in the mainstream.

    great video! I agree with you that fun is subjective, but I think there are some general ideas about what is fun for most of people, for example I think, feeling "powerful" in games is fun for most of people.
    Maybe you could make some short videos and show some spoilers while you make the documentaries, to gain popularity on youtube

      Thank you! I've been thinking of a few ways to help the channel move along. There are options available, just none that I've felt particularly pushed towards doing.
      And there is some truth that game design does relate to fun. I mean, that's sort of the point of game design. The whole point of a game is to be enjoyable and there are designs that have been proven overtime. I think to better reiterate the point is that you can make a game that is a 'technically perfect' game but that doesn't mean that's all that needs. There are two ends of the spectrum. You could have something like Okami where it is amazing and memorable but it doesn't relate to an audience, or it could be the opposite end, where it's something that is addicting but it's an easily forgettable experience. It needs to be something more to it than just a good combination of mechanics.
      Still, Okami had a lot of soul, I just think that it wasn't a game that was what people were wanting at the time. That's the only thing I can think of to mentally process the commercial failure.

    I cried during the final boss fight of Okami because the whole narrative at that part was handled so beautifully. It's weird because the whole final arc was both the most emotional yet the least interesting arc to me.
    As for the ending song, I interpreted it as Issun's prayers to Ammy, cuz SPOILERS --- Issun leaves Ammy before she enters the final dungeon and regrets it so much he went around all of Japan to get the people they helped to pray for her in hopes that she can return but she departs for the Celestial Plains and they never meet again --- SPOILERS.

      Yeah, I'm redesigning the intro sometime in the future and I'm not even using it right now. It served me well when I first started but it needed a redesign probably two years ago.

    I know you rightfully feel upset that this game failed commercially but it is clear that higher-ups know there is demand for Okami, hence the HD remake.
    That and you can use a drawing tablet to play the HD remake on PC which is really cool!

      I think after things calmed down at Capcom and especially recently, they have really been introspective of a lot of their old games and what made them good. They are even talking about making a real sequel to Okami, directed by Kamiya! I would absolutely love if that were the case.
      Also the tablet idea for PC was awesome!

    Great as always sober, you know this is going to be the weirdest statement I've ever said about a game, is that I think the game good however I did not like it and I cannot put my finger on what I didn't like about it to be particular and just make sure that everyone knows what I'm talking about I played the HD version and I bought it new because I like to support creators making making games that are different from norms and when I started it up I liked it at first but as I play on I got slowly bored by it and I couldn't place it on a certain thing except maybe it's at the voice but never enough to bore me to which i pride myself to make sure i know why i hate or like something which is scary to me to not know terrifys me alot. Has that happened to you sober where you found a game to be good but you were so bored by it you were wondering what made everyone like it?(do also forgive my terrible grammar )

      Oh yeah, most definitely. I admit in the video that as much as I love Okami, I could never finish it. And there are plenty of games that I don't like that everyone else seems too, most of which if I admitted on the channel I'd probably get torn apart. Haha!
      But that's the thing. From a game design point, Okami is an amazing game. But fun is ultimately subjective to each person. Different things speak to different people in different ways. And there really is nothing wrong with that and you shouldn't be worried about it.

      I didn't complete it until making this video, and I love it, so it was the same for me. I think it's just sort of a thing with being a person with responsibilities and the slow-paced nature of the game makes it difficult to finish it before you need to move on to something else. It's really a game meant to be enjoyed like a good book but very few people have that luxury.

    a very good reason mention regarding it's conservative sales figure is its communication.
    i found the official guide at first and I was completely amazed by the artistic design. I bought the game after.
    its release was litteraly confidential in Europe. As for the Console gen gap. I played it on PS3 (retro compatible), bought it back several time since (HD, PC etc...)

    Great Video man! You earned a new sub. I have felt the same way about this game for years.
    I respect, but do not enjoy most Zelda titles. I clearly remember seeing similarities between Okami and Zelda /Link games. However, I found Okami far more enjoyable. Perhaps it had something to do with the more open ended approach to combat/puzzles/dungeons...as you pointed out.

      Zelda is hit and miss with me. By the time Okami had came out, I really started to get bored of the Zelda formula because it started to feel very similar. I think I gravitated towards Okami so much was because while it had the standard Zelda-like gameplay, it was paced differently and everything felt like it had so much more purpose. I think a lot of that had to do with how Okami involved you in ways that Zelda didn't. I felt invested in the world and its people. Not to mention the game was beautiful to look at.
      I can understand why some people would gravitate towards one or the other, and both have their merits. But I would go as far to say that Okami is the better designed game simply by how much thought, effort and love that was put into it.
