    The channel update video will be released on Sunday! It will go into my journey in regards to the past couple of months since the State of the Channel in 2019, where the channel is heading in the future, as well as more about the comment initiative. However, don't let that stop you from saying what you want to say now!
    Related, I'm going to do better at responding to comments, which is part of the reason I want to do this in the first place. Reading and responding to comments was always one of my favorite things to do and I allowed myself to get "too busy" with minor things when I realize that the community is more important to me than simply making videos. While I'm not going to be able to respond to every comment, I'm going to make more of an effort to get back to those I can!
    Thanks for understanding and being patient while the channel was on hiatus as I did a lot of introspection!

      This video is awesome. The other really good video on this was from Whang and you filled in all the bits he didn’t touch on. He dealt with the journey to get 1.5 and you covered the game itself. I really appreciate all your hard work because as far as I can see no one has done a comprehensive overview like this.

    Finally someone makes an EXTENSIVE look at this game! Also gives a better understanding of why they cancelled the game as opposed to the bullshit public reasons that were given such as "plays too similar to the first game" when in reality the final build shares far more in common with RE1.

    • @SoberDwarf
      @SoberDwarf  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks! I really wanted to take a look at it. It's hard to judge it considering the really only playable version there is was a 40% build but I think with all the context clues it's a fairly accurate assumption. Either way, I still find it fascinating that there is this piece of gaming history of a "what could have been" that you rarely get to see.

    Nice video, very well researched and thought out. The bit about "changing" (or "evolving") monsters at 21:04 refers to some bosses, like William, altering their appearance during fights (as William does at 19:30). It wasn't limited to Birkin but also to "Salem" (the monster many call "Zeiram" - this confusion stems from the concept art misspelling its transliterated name) and "Golgotha", which were originally separated G-monsters. Eventually, it was decided that William was going to be the core villain and that he was going to transform mostly in cut-scenes (so what you say at 21:18 is 100% correct). Dr. Birkin's more central role was actually conceived during the end of 1.5's development, which wasn't a very smooth process, as ideas kept getting added or modified on a weekly basis. One enemy people never got the chance to see were the alligators in the sewers (there wasn't only the giant one, as in RE2: there were also normal-size gators as standard enemies - an idea eventually seen in RE5 with the crocs in the swamp and RE7 during the "End of Zoe" DLC).

    • @ThotdFan127
      @ThotdFan127 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      God I so badly want to see their original idea for the alligator boss fight. I think it woulda had a Plant 42 like option where by solving a puzzle you could electrocute it using the panel in the boss room. Otherwise it would be a boss you had to actually fight.

      My belief is that a video needs to be as long as it needs to be; I feel like if you try to confine yourself in a certain space, you end up cutting a lot out that is really important to the discussion. I don't go out of my way to make long videos, it's just the information there leads to so many interesting paths that it's worth exploring entirely.

    • @jordandow5144
      @jordandow5144 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If it's worth exploring, it's worth exploring properly! I completely agree that it's not the creator, rather it's the game that determines how long a deep dive doc will be - that's what we're all here for with your channel! Looking forward to the next one

    Great to see you back with a video! And it's a series I love as well. I've always felt the Resident Evil series are the most engaging games I've ever played due to the design of the game world and gameplay elements (I also love the journals as well). Well, at least the old school Resident Evil games up to 4. Of course 4 was different than the fixed camera/pre-rendered background Resident Evil games that I prefer most, but it was still amazing. I still haven't played the Resident Evil 2 Remake (besides the one shot demo) since I'm always broke. I'll eventually get it on a deep game sale if I can at the time. Besides that, Resident Evil 1.5 has always been intriguing to me. Resident Evil 2 is my favorite of the series when it comes to an original entry in the entire series, but Resident Evil Remake is my top favorite overall because it took the greatness of the original and made it even better with the updated graphics and gameplay elements, as well as expanding it. The game was an absolute masterpiece!
    I do like the elements that 1.5 had, but overall I still prefer Resident Evil 2 and am glad they started over to make it what it is. Resident Evil 2 is an amazing game and I wouldn't want it any other way.
    Btw, when you mentioned Little Nemo: The Dream Master, I was flooded with nostalgia. I haven't thought about that game in a long time. I used to love that game back in my NES days!
    Anyway, great video! You always go in-depth and give details that others may not. One thing I miss is when you'd film scenes of yourself and say some pun while we see your expressions. I also miss those side stories you did with EvilDwarf. Little wacky side stories like that brought more entertainment, which is always a good thing. I'm not sure how much others liked these elements of your past videos, but I always liked them. Well, great job once again and I'll look forward to more videos!

    • @SoberDwarf
      @SoberDwarf  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      RE2 was definitely the better game and I really agree with Kamiya ultimately deciding to scrap it. This video was to highlight the importance of failing though, because it's not always the end of the world but sometimes you need to in order to make a better end product.
      I liked the skits too, it's just that most times they would end up being a process in itself and it was getting more and more difficult to pace them and implement them in a way that sort of fit the theme for the video as I moved on from doing a general overview into more in-depth analysis. The skits always got mixed reactions, it was a "you either love it or hate it" kind of thing. I still try to include little nods and break aways with my videos though, just to change the pace a bit because it's important not to be serious *all* the time.

    Each video SoberDwarf puts out is something I look forward to, even if it's on a game I've never played. It's mostly because you can tell he puts a lot of himself into his work, and hes incredibly sincere when it comes to how he feels about the games he highlights. I can say that I never played Final Fantasy 11, but because of his videos on it (combined with the screenshots a friend of mine has shown) I've got a huge interest in FF 14. On top of that, his style of video making is very different from the typical 'video game youtubers' I watch. It feels better put together research-wise, and like it was made more out of passion for the material in the game rather than for a quick video to try and turn a profit.

    What makes the Soberdwarf channel stand out from others is probably its greatest weakness, even though the channel bears his name, it is not about him. The channel is about understanding videogames from their fundamental designs to the people who created them. The few anecdotes of Sober are always to exalt emotions that come from the games themselves.
    No matter how much I investigate a game, I can always count on Sober to make a video that will give me 1 or more details of this and not only that, I will always keep in mind the big picture of the events that led to the creation and quality of the games to discuss.

    Hi, good job men!
    Did you ever heard of this Rebecca's rummor? it could sound a little like a fan theory and goes like this:
    At some point in the development of PS1 Res2 they thought about using Rebecca and she will become a zombie later in the game, this idea didn't make it into the game but the concept suposedly survived as part of the iconic promotional art for Res2, as this zombie was not a model existing as is in 2 or Nemesis it adds a little to it's credibility, you can recognise her as people had give her a name in the last months "Misty", this zombie model finally appear in Res2 Remake jumping out of the engine room down the stairs of the helicopter wreck were you move the valve.
    I think I read about this around 5 or 7 years ago probably even as much as 10 years, I can't remember. It's been since they included her in Res2 Rmk that I have been thinking more about this, but I can't remember where I read or heard about it.

    You know it would have been cool if Capcom instead of completely scrapping the idea and story behind Resident Evil 1.5 they could have actually have that play into the story of Resident Evil 2 simultaneously while the t virus outbreak was happening throughout raccoon City with Leon and Claire at the RPD police station the story of Elza Walker actually could have taking place at another police station in Raccoon City. Kind of like what they did with the Resident Evil outbreak files where all of that was going on simultaneously with the events of Resident Evil 2 and 3. We all know that the game was only 75% complete before Capcom scrap the idea and then decided that they wanted to completely start over from scratch but the police station in that version actually look like an authentic police station and not an art museum. The only thing is is that Leon's character would have had to get replaced with a different character since he would have been at the other police station. They could have replaced his character in 1.5 with a scrap character from the first Resident Evil I don't know but that's just my thoughts on it. And as for the game plan in RE 1.5 I'd say it was definitely ahead of its time.

But the story events don't seem to match up. Which what I liked about the original, how both Leon's and Claire's stories are happening in the same time.
    The story in the Remake gets confusing when you encounter William in his G4 form: Where was Leon when Claire was fighting this Version of William or where was Claire when Leon was fighting this Version of William and how did Annette die based on if you played as Leon or Claire first?
    And why couldn't the Remakers get Claire and Sherry's original outfit and Mr. X's face right!?

    When it comes to the playable version of 1.5: Is it a game with so many gaps filled in, that it isnt much like whatever the real 1.5 would be, or is the released 1.5 regarded as pretty true to the original?

    For a game from 1997, that is some seriously advanced hair physics on Elza.
    I can't say I'm fond of the name "RE 1.5." While I understand where the name is coming from, being between 1 and 2, it kind of implies an upgrade to the first game more than a work in progress of the second. Maybe "RE 2 Alpha" isn't catchy enough for some fans but it is what it is.

      I believe the designation was actually determined by Mikami himself, at least from what I read in interviews. But yeah, I understand the issue held with the naming convention.

    I love watching videos about RE1.5 because Resident Evil would of not been the same if this version came out

  • @Kevinb1821

    I think it would have been better if resident evil closed the chapter on umbrella. They still could have kept making new resident evil games based on other stories and new bad guys that accidentally released bio weapons. I thought 0 kind of killed the sci fi feel of the game and 4 totally killed and sci fi. That’s what made one and 2 so great is it felt like it actually could happen.

    • @SoberDwarf
      @SoberDwarf  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. I mean, the story was originally thrown in there as a motivation, and I think RE2 really grounded in to a reality, but as they kept having to expand on it and raise the stakes, it sort of got more and more crazy to the point where it was sort of eye-rolling. But that's sort of an issue with the medium in general.

    8:50- I'm more disappointed about the Final Version of Metal Gear Solid 3, 4 and Portable Ops compared to the earliest Trailer when it came to Frame-Rate Performance after Metal Gear Solid 2 and The Twin Snakes.
    18:05- Why didn't the Remake bring back Roy?!
    22:35- Which the feature would be used in Metal Gear Solid V and the RE2 Remake.
    25:36- Nice Barry Burton reference. LOL 😆

    I'm sorry but this has to be said, RE2 fan following is 110% Nostalgia biased. When you objectively look at RE1&2, RE1 is the superior game. It has more endings, better puzzles and overall a much more tight&challenging level design. GamingBrit's video on RE2 has pointed out glaring design flaws apparent in RE2.
    RE 1.5 from the looks of it at least, was going to have a much better story. Ada would've been an umbrella scientist instead of a spy, an improvement because we can understand her motivations and she would've been directly involved in the crimes committed by umbrella. I always had an issue with ada due to her intentionally vague motivations and her being a satellite character for Leon for like 3-4 games straight. You could've also saved Marvin&Kendo like how you could save Barry&Rebecca in RE1.
    Also, Mikami's statement of "RPD needed to be more ARTISTIC like Spencer Mansion" contradicts his earlier statement that RE2 should be different from RE1. To get a clearer picture of what RE1.5 could've been after it got the proper graphical polish, look no further than RE3, that game isn't centered around an art museum mansion and the its still a very memorable game with its urban settings.

      It's really difficult to say in terms of 1.5. As I mentioned in the video, we never saw the final product so it's very difficult to say what we would have got and the issues there were would have been fixed.
      From what I was able to experience and from all the research I did with this, I'm inclined to agree with Hideki Kamiya. The design and narrative of 1.5 had no real purpose or direction. Personally I could really seeing it as a situation of being the "worst of both worlds" where it attempts to use the design philosophy of Resident Evil 2 while sticking with the mechanics of the original. It's hard to compare the two because they both have entirely different design philosophies; they are both trying to accomplish entirely different things so it's impossible to compare the two. Resident Evil 2 is a terrible Resident Evil 1 and vice versa. But the preference is entirely subjective based on what you are looking for in a survival horror game. I think each one succeeded in what it was trying to accomplish whereas RE1.5 was definitely attempting to be both and ended up not doing either well.
      I do like the idea you presented about Ada and totally agree with you in that I think her being a scientist gives her a lot stronger motivation as a character. But again, we don't know how well developed they would have be or if you would have even had stuck the landing. Remember, Iwao wasn't the writer this time, it was Hideki Kamiya and a inexperienced one at that, and Mikami has proven that he is not one to care about narrative and might have actually been pushing for a much simpler story. I would love to give RE1.5 more credit and I think it should exist in some form, but I totally understand why it was scrapped.

    critique: i personally find the composition on the screen to be too busy and distracting (final fantasy menu sfx included)

    • @SoberDwarf
      @SoberDwarf  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's entirely fair. If I may follow up on that, how distracting is it? Do you ever find yourself getting used to it as the video progresses or is it always noticeable? Is bad during particular sections where the game on screen changes more or is it about the same?
      I got a lot of positive feedback about the new overlay when I was doing some testing with it and after making adjustments from the last video a few people who had issues with it said it was better, but I'm still looking to make a few adjustments regarding people's experience, so if there is anything that I might be able to adjust that you think might make it more tolerable, I'm open to hearing it.

    • @goldchalice
      @goldchalice 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SoberDwarf Its probably when there is a lot of screen changes that it distracts me the most. Its hard to concentrate on your script when there is background music, a sound effect when background music changes and a different sound effect when you want to attribute different source footage. At time it seems "audibly busy". You also could make the screen less busy and claustrophobic by just removing your 'logo' on the right on the 4:3 footage. Your analysis are thoughtful and interesting enough that I don't think you need to rely that much on a 'visual identity'. That's just my two cents. Thanks for content!
