Really appreciate you acknowledging how all the tech giants are simultaneously dismantling their responsible AI teams and removing all guardrails when it comes to the ethical concerns of AI. I have yet to see other UX content creators talk about responsible AI use. That being said, you balance this concern with realistic ways designers can deal with the reality of AI advancements. The designers that still have a seat at the table, long-term, are the ones that shift towards developing strong research, strategy and human-centered vision. We need more AI & UX content that (at the very least) acknowledges the current political/ethical/cultural context more - design does not exist in a vacuum. Loved this video!
Thanks so much! Unfortunately the AI videos that get the most views are the alarmists / click-baity ones but I'm very proud of this one. Thanks for the support :)
Thanks for your content Ricardo! Some questions. Im a graphic designer with 20 yrs. exp., and newly graduated from a UX bootcamp and Im truly struggling finding motivation due to the arrival of AI. I dont even have any real world case studies in my portfolio, what do you recommend I do since I havent even found my first job in the field? I was hoping to start as a UI designer given my background and slowly moving more towards UX but with UI becoming obsolete in the long term, what would you tell someone in my shoes? Thank you!
Hi! That's a great question. I would start by focusing on the core value that a graphic designer brings to the table, which, in my opinion, is visually communicating an idea or a message. With that in mind, the communication taking place is between human to human, not machine to machine or machine to human, so there will always be a need for a human to supervise that the message is being conveyed successfully with that human touch. It's almost like the role of the designer becomes a sort of editor or creative director. As far as UI goes, I believe that designers will become more valuable at the beginning of the process, setting the tone and the creative direction for a particular project (essentially defining the problem). The part that I think will get automated is the more redundant asset making that happens afterward. However, the aesthetic definition, the brand direction, the use cases you're trying to tackle-all of those things will still require a human touch because the audience is a human being. So, when creating your case studies, you can develop and hone those skills because I think that's what will make you stand out among other designers potentially focusing solely on visual design. Now, visual design is still important since AI hasn't completely evolved to the point of replacing designers, so still show what you can do and what your awesome 20 years of experience have taught you. You got this! 🦾
