Das erste Land in Afrika ist Namibia auf meiner Liste. Ich hoffe das die Deutsche Sprache irgendwann in der Zukunft die offizielle Sprache in Namibia werden wird. I'm English speaking, stay in South Africa by Cape Town, know Afrikaans except for a few words here and there, and learning German. I thus find almost all the German here easy to understand. I always have. Speaking it though is another matter. I've been to Namibia a few times. I was also there before 1990, in 1985. What I found was good there for learning German back then, was that it had three official languages English, Afrikaans and German. So, many signs and notices were in those three languages. So, one could compare the similar Afrikaans and German, and at the same time pick up some German. But, now Namibia only has English as the official language (with Afrikaans and German still widely used). So, those trilingual signs are disappearing more and more. It's a pity.
Easy German is a well researched channel. You go beyond my Expectation.. Ich liebe Easy German! And i wish even Easy Swahil would sound like this. The interview from Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar and Mombasa Kenya Easy English by Cari in Namibia hahaha. Du hast wirklich gut gemacht @tzaniajetzt
Someone mentioned taking a train from Cape Town to Windhoek. There is also the Intercape bus. That seems to be more well-known. It is also quicker. A disadvantage, is that it gets to the border at around 2 am. There are also flights, but seem to be few and far between, and usually have awkward times.
I have been on that bus before. Once the bus drivers locked themselves (and us) out of the bus at a stop right after the border at Steinkopf. It was in the middle of the night and everyone was freezing while we watched the bus drivers trying to break into their own bus 😂. Eventually they had to call a key service (in the night) and all of us passengers needed to wait in a filling station. Very memorable 😁 Liebe Grüße, Cari
That is funny yeah. I've also had not good experiences on that bus. Once at the border, going to South Africa, two guy's papers weren't in order. So, there was a big fiasco. Once the bus turned around, went back across the border, turned around, and went back again. I'm not sure why. I heard also that the driver was fined R10000. That's silly, as he was just the driver. Another time, heading to Namibia, it was late at night, with almost everyone sleeping. Suddenly the bus slammed on brakes. Bags went flying, and we almost did. Luckily there wasn't anyone walking around. I heard a bit later that the driver almost hit a horse. That bus then gets to the border, and was delayed for six hours there. That was because of someone having drugs. It was also quite a fiasco.
Someone also told me once when the bus crossed the border, I can't remember in which direction, the border police looked inside and found a rhino horn. No one knew who put it there.
Point of information: Air Namibia flies 4times a day from Windhoek to johannesburg en 4 times a day to Cape Town en once a day return to Durban via Gaborone. South african Airways flies 3times a day to Windhoek. South African airline en jet Air also flies daily. Comair also flies daily between Windhoek joburg en cape town en to en from Walvis Bay - joburg. Infact air travel is so convenient between the 2 countries. More so WEST AIR WINGS, a namibian private airline also flies to Cape Town en joburg in addition to being a chartered airline its also scheduled airline. 👍
Namibian here. A German once told me to go back to Africa I told them they should first tell all the 250k Germans living there to first come back to Germany then I ll go back to Windhoek 😂

I've been to Namibia, but I don't speak German, so how common is it to find a German speaker in Namibia? I know many people speak Afrikaans/Dutch from personal experience, but isn't German also used, due to South West Africa being a German Colony?

Nobody in Germany reflects our colonialist history! I see so many people being surprised about the German presence in Namibia (and southern africa incl. western cape province of republic of South Africa).... It is because we do not learn about this dark part in our history...
Btw. I am definitely visiting Namibia in the future if i get a chance to. I have already fallen in love with South Africa as so many Germans do, I am sure Namibia will find a place in my heart.

Parts of South Africa was a Dutch colony. Namibia was a German colony. Many Afrikaners settled in Namibia. And, Afrikaners are also partly of German descent. (And, partly of French descent.)

I can never get the answer I'm looking for when it comes to pronunciation of Ich and words with ch in them. For example at the beginning when the girls introduce themselves 1 says Ich like Ish another says Ich like chhh and really they all say it differently so what is the correct pronunciation? Does it depend on region? Where ur from? Etc etc
Who would've thought that German still exists in such a far off land? I'm guessing this the very last remnant of German colonialism. It looks like the Namibian people still have good relations with the Germans. Maybe Namibia can be an example for other African nations in how to reintegrate themselves with their former rulers.
Maybe I should clarify, I when I say "reintegrate" I'm simply referring to establishing a good relationship with each other, not one dominating the other. And Germany has done a lot of apologizing for its past, more so than most other former European colonial powers. I think it's time to mend differences, and this type of cultural exchange is a great example of that.
Namibia for instance has much more racial harmony than South Africa. Someone in Namibia said this about Namibia: "We have much respect for whites... But they respect us too, We don't have real racists problems here, We are one nation... White, black and all others in Namibia call each other brothers and sisters..." It’s a case of Nelson Mandela’s legacy living on more in Namibia than South Africa. Namibia is an example for other African nations in how to reintegrate themselves with their former rulers.

1970 kam ich durch die sahara über den tschad nach kamerun. ich war damals 30 jahre alt und von kamerun begeistert, kamerun hat alles im norden noch savane, dann dschungel-flüsse berge seen und der atlantik. und freundliche schöne menschen. manche haben auch einen bestimten tiefgang und sind spirituell mystisch begabt. geld spielt da keine so große rolle, nur freundschaft. verkauft den chinesen kein land bleibt unabhängig.!

Früher haben wir alle Titel auf Deutsch geschrieben - dann haben wir es für alle Easy Languages videos einheitlich auf Englisch gemacht. Der Grund ist dieser: Manchmal wollen wir auch Videos aus Sprachen gucken, die wir nicht verstehen - einfach nur, um etwas über die Kultur zu erfahren oder einen Blick in das Land zu erhalten - dafür müssen allerdings die Titel auf Englisch sein, denn ich werde vermutlich nicht auf ein Mongolisch oder Japanisch Video klicken, wenn ich den Titel nicht verstehe :-/ Es hat leider auch Nachteile, aber wir wollten es einheitlich machen.

Better question....why and how is there a German presence in Namibia? The history of that reads like a horror movie, one familiar to much of colonized Africa. You can draw a bloody line from the genocide of the Herero people directly to this lovely clip.

Of course there have been strong historical relations which is why Germans - if at all - tend to know more about Namibia than about other African countries in the first place. Apart from that Namibia is a unique country in terms of it's landscape (unlike any other African country) and it is very easy for people to travel: it is super safe, there is a lot of offers for tourists, there is a good infrastructure (you can do self driving trips etc. (very popular)) and it also has a very easy climate with no tropical diseases like Malaria around. There are many reasons why people like to travel to Namibia in the first place. And surely, if one would travel to Namibia he would come back and tell his/ her friends... that's why the German group of tourists is growing faster than other ones (I think) :)

viele Niedrlaender spricht gut Deutch. Interesting they speak excellent German and have the sentence construction and words but are not so sure of the cases - if only German got rid of Der, Die, Das it'd be such an easier language to learn fluently! Be more Afrikaans!!

No. The most 3 spoken languages are (Afrikaans, English and Oshiwambo).
English is the official language.
There are some people who do speak German in Namibia. Apparently about 30% of the white population are Germans.

I can never get the answer I'm looking for when it comes to pronunciation of Ich and words with ch in them. For example at the beginning when the girls introduce themselves 1 says Ich like Ish another says Ich like chhh and really they all say it differently so what is the correct pronunciation? Does it depend on region? Where ur from? Etc etc
Who would've thought that German still exists in such a far off land? I'm guessing this the very last remnant of German colonialism. It looks like the Namibian people still have good relations with the Germans. Maybe Namibia can be an example for other African nations in how to reintegrate themselves with their former rulers.
Maybe I should clarify, I when I say "reintegrate" I'm simply referring to establishing a good relationship with each other, not one dominating the other. And Germany has done a lot of apologizing for its past, more so than most other former European colonial powers. I think it's time to mend differences, and this type of cultural exchange is a great example of that.

Namibia for instance has much more racial harmony than South Africa. Someone in Namibia said this about Namibia:
"We have much respect for whites... But they respect us too, We don't have real racists problems here, We are one nation... White, black and all others in Namibia call each other brothers and sisters..."
It’s a case of Nelson Mandela’s legacy living on more in Namibia than South Africa.

1970 kam ich durch die sahara über den tschad nach kamerun. ich war damals 30 jahre alt und von kamerun begeistert, kamerun hat alles im norden noch savane, dann dschungel-flüsse berge seen und der atlantik. und freundliche schöne menschen. manche haben auch einen bestimten tiefgang und sind spirituell mystisch begabt. geld spielt da keine so große rolle, nur freundschaft. verkauft den chinesen kein land bleibt unabhängig.!

Früher haben wir alle Titel auf Deutsch geschrieben - dann haben wir es für alle Easy Languages videos einheitlich auf Englisch gemacht. Der Grund ist dieser: Manchmal wollen wir auch Videos aus Sprachen gucken, die wir nicht verstehen - einfach nur, um etwas über die Kultur zu erfahren oder einen Blick in das Land zu erhalten - dafür müssen allerdings die Titel auf Englisch sein, denn ich werde vermutlich nicht auf ein Mongolisch oder Japanisch Video klicken, wenn ich den Titel nicht verstehe :-/
Es hat leider auch Nachteile, aber wir wollten es einheitlich machen.
Easy German mach es dann Sinn die deutsche Version auch schreiben oder einfach "Deutsch/German" am Ende schreiben?

If you look at the major Tourist-Destinations (Canary Islands, Hurghada, Marsa Alam, Cancún, Varadero, Zanzibar, La Romana, etc.), they are often DIRECTLY connected with such "Holidays Airlines" as "Condor", "TUIfly", "Neos" and "Blue Panorama Airlines" (in Italy), "Thomas Cook Airlines" (in Britain) and - sometimes - "Air Berlin"...

Better question....why and how is there a German presence in Namibia? The history of that reads like a horror movie, one familiar to much of colonized Africa. You can draw a bloody line from the genocide of the Herero people directly to this lovely clip.

+Tob ias - That's not quite the reason. Of course there have been strong historical relations which is why Germans - if at all - tend to know more about Namibia than about other African countries in the first place. Apart from that Namibia is a unique country in terms of it's landscape (unlike any other African country) and it is very easy for people to travel: it is super safe, there is a lot of offers for tourists, there is a good infrastructure (you can do self driving trips etc. (very popular)) and it also has a very easy climate with no tropical diseases like Malaria around. There are many reasons why people like to travel to Namibia in the first place. And surely, if one would travel to Namibia he would come back and tell his/ her friends... that's why the German group of tourists is growing faster than other ones (I think) :)
