    Frieren and Dungeon Meshi appear quite similar on the surface but are actually quite fundamentally different stories. While both are fantasy stories with major SoL elements, the way their plots are structured are fundamentally different. Frieren is heavily arc-based like a lot of shounen adventures such as One Piece. The party going on an epic 10-year quest to see Heaven facing many different storylines. Given Frieren’s focus on the journey and not the destination, this setup works based on its themes. On the other hand, Dungeon Meshi is a very focused plot following a group of adventurers with a single goal, saving Falin. It’s smaller in scope but this allows it to be highly focused. This gives a lot of depth to its core plotline and allows it to go deep into its extremely well thought out setting. This is more akin to something like FMAB where the main plot is constantly moving.
    Personally, I love Frieren more as I find myself emotionally moved by its story beats and enjoy its themes more but I also love Dungeon Meshi for its amazing world building and fun characters.

    To resume my thought in a few words. Frieren is a fantasy shonen with all the trope that came with it : standard character trope like tsundere, stoic guy with glasse, "mommy and waifu" like character; tournament/exam arc, a pretty Bland high fantasy setting that look like any fantasy isekai out there with your elfe, dwarf, kingdom, demon king etc. the story and theme is universal and boiled down to "value and cherish time with your friend because it won't last" its not the power of friendship but almost. the good and bad are clearly define with the Demon being for sure the "evil being" in the story.
    Dungeon meshi is a seinen with way deeper and better world building, ecology, character psyche and character building. it stick to its thematic of Hunger, desire and consumption and make it evolve throughout the whole 100 chapter in many way. its way more intimate in its setting, taking place in just a single Dungeon, and its theme that's way more specific, psychologic, moral and ehtical also. ( will people do whatever it take, commiting taboo like "canibalism" and forbidden ritual and magic to achieve their goal ).
    their is no clear cut between good and evil, our protagonist questionning their own morality and becoming evil in anyone else's eyes.
    Dungeon meshi to this day, still stick to me, Laois monomaniacal tendencies, marcille own goal being so noble but so selfish too, the Lion, kabru and all the other character.
    Frieren just never made me care so much for its character because they all are overpowered sociopath, Frieren the millenium mage, her 2 genius disciple, Ubel etc. they just don't feel "human".
    our party in Dungeon meshi felt deeply human, they died, they flee, they cry, they scream, and the most important, they eat together everyday and wear their emotion on their sleeve when they do so, being disgust, surprise, awe etc.

      You put it perfectly. Frieren is great, especially the anime, but Dungeon Meshi is some to-be-studied classic literature at times. It is ridiculously deep, and it has a really nice surface of approachable comedy, amazing characters, and cool worldbuilding to boot!

      Agree that dungeon meshi is great. Its just that I get different vibes from the authors of each series. I usually don't believe that you need a wealth of life experience to write great stories but its pretty apparent when you compare how they go about storytelling.
      Frieren's author's writing feels like a privileged sheltered girl with no personality and no real world wisdom. Like a person who thinks that she knows better than everyone else and tells the most basic and vanilla of themes and messages. Messages that are so one-note that only the most socially & emotionally-stunted individuals would find "deep and meaningful". The storytelling and delivery of messages are so heavy handed it feels amateurish. Everything from the writing, characters, and world: you can feel the author's personality seep through and it is pretentiously shallow and preachy. Meanwhile the progression is just a sequence of disjointed arcs, with each arc having no bearing on the next. Its like a make-it-up-as-you-go patchwork of individual arcs with no overarching plot or goal to tie it all together.
      Dungeon meshi's author feels like that lone person sitting by themself at the table. When you talk to them you learn that she's actually passionate and knowledgeable about their fantasy hobbies/games/media instead of just using it as a cardboard cutout of a setting. She writes such compelling characters you believe she's someone who actually knows how real people behave and think instead of just labeling a character with a foreign name. DM's story, character dynamics and interactions, variety of characters, worldbuilding, comedy, etc are leagues above and each aspect come together so neatly in a comprehensive package with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

    Definitely part team dungeon meshi here.
    You may not find me crying watching an anime girl patting an anime old man on the head with dungeon meshi, but you also wouldn't find me crying with laughter one minute, being on the edge of my seat another, then having anxiety attacks for the next episode with frieren. Frieren is good, but Dungeon meshi is one hell of a full course meal.
    Dungeon meshi's manga is also already over. That means you can enjoy the main dish and dessert anytime you want. Frieren on the other hand, looks like it will take a decade or two more.

    I'm here with you girl! Yas! I do watch/read anime and manga of both. Cannot deny that both are GREAT...BUT!
    As you said at 5:21 , fact that Frieren is a *Shounen* and. Dunmesh is a *seinen* already shown the different on their theme.
    I find Frieren is simple, touching and eye-pleasing battles (which is relied on the studio, man the original manga fights are just about 2 panels) and that really easy to be approached by large audience. Dungeon Meshi has PEAK writing and world building, which everthing happens as it foreshadows the incoming events and explain the past one, so cleverly! People who barely use their brain or not pay least any attention would find things messy and complain about everything in Dunmesh, but they find things are easier in Frieren as its whole plot is going on and Himmel flash backs.
    About characters, 8:19 SO TRUE! The way Dunmesh has so good character interactions because Kui Ryoko built her characters like a real human, so real that they all have their own strengths and flaws, fears and desires, thoughts and feelings, purposes and choices, and that diversity of indivitual interacting with each other so miraculously! It's true that 9:09 Noone is built to be a main character or "hero" but we choose to follow their story! In Frieren, I find the character interaction is just at "the writer has awareness to add it on" level and focus on Himmel flash backs (of course, it's the main plot)...
    People might love Frieren more, but the truth has spoken:
    "The okay anime is Dungeon Meshi and the beloved anime is Frieren" - Molly, 3:14

      Pretty much. And another thing i prefer dunmeshi when i first read it (pretty much followed both since when they started), to understand the author i instantly looked for her prev works and learned that Kyoko Kui was very well educated or knew many writing tricks and devices, but she didn't rely on it much and using more lightheartedly or for comedy purpose. She impressed me (even other authors and DunMeshi's director and staffs) by her hardworks on top of her genius creativity, there're too much research on the topic she's writing for small details. For example, no one would ever question the Kraken would taste good, it'd be an easy way for a meal, no? She went beyond that and applied the fact that in real life giant squid wouldn't taste good (there're plenty articles on that topic), so to be living in the same environment, a Kraken probably had same taste.
      And then, there're many certain moments one could turn the whole thing into a completed mess super convoluted plot like.. CLAMP, but she's never had her foot off the pedal and controlled the whole tone perfectly, to the point i think she could go off and cameback just as fine, but she chose not to.

    re 8:58, I watched Frieren without knowing any of the hype around it. And I don't know why other people enjoy it, but actually for me, Frieren quickly became one of my favorites specifically BECAUSE I relate to Frieren more than any other fictional character I've ever seen. As a more stoic person who has been around a lot of early death, I deeply relate to her struggles with connection and her relationship with death. And I feel like my personal journey has been one of having done well in society by being skilled at things, but struggling and trying to be more like my Himmel-friends to be better at caring about people and making connections. So for me, while I have found Dungeon Meshi really fun, Frieren connected with me in a way that I haven't really felt from fiction before.

So yeah, since I'm biased for my preference. To me Dungeon Meshi is the better fantasy anime of the dungeon crawler genre. Meanwhile Frieren is the better fantasy slice of life. And that to me characters in dungeon meshi are disnguishable by their shapes, colors and personality. That's to me though. Plus Frieren is a good watch though a goldfish like me can never appreciate the dialogue and Dunmeshi is like the only anime I consumed this year

  • @jemleye
    @jemleye 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

    Frieren is great. It is simpler and relies more on the shonen tropes of showy action, stereotypical and formulaic humor (especially with pouty Fern), and somewhat shallower, strictly plot-related worldbuilding. And it is super good at it, throwing in some genuine good emotional beats. It is an amazing show and deserves its popularity.
    But oh boy, Delicious in Dungeon is special. So well thought out, beautifully worldbuilt, genuinely heartbreaking, incredibly cleverly and multifacetedly humorous, and so well contained in its length. The impeccable balance of humor and drama that feed each other, enhancing both elements. While Frieren's characters are great, fun, and lend for great drama, Dungeon Meshi's characters are just so painfully, painstakingly, brilliantly *REAL*. From their internal conflicts to their complicated relationships to their flaws. We learned more about them down to the very end of the manga in a way that never felt gimmicky and often was expertly foreshadowed.
    Yea, it's not perfect either. The art was inconsistent in the beginning, the anime clearly isn't as flashy with a smaller budget than Frieren, and personally I thought that the anime at times did have serious pacing issues. For how well thought out and justified some story beats or solutions to plot points are throughout, it did highlight any that had slightly less well defined or connected solutions.
    Nevertheless, Dungeon Meshi deserves a place in a hall of fame of some of the best fantasy works of all time. Can't wait for season 2 and for anime onlies to truly see the brilliance.
    And Frieren deserves a place in a hall of fame of anime. It's adaptation into the medium is absolutely amazing and one of a kind.

      Honestly, as someone who watched Dungeon Meshi after 13 episodes being aired, I don't agree with your point about the pacing issue. Some anime like Dungeon Meshi may feel like they're not progressing that much when you watch it weekly, but for me, watching 2-4 episodes a day felt really well paced and even in episodes were less things are happening, there are still things that add either on characters personality/backstory or foreshadow things that will happen. Nothing felt really unecessary. Thst being said, I personally still prefer Frieren, but its more something personal rather than "I don't like ____ in Dungeon Meshi". The way that the story feels intimate really makes me go and say that is my new personal favorite without secong thoughts.
      Still, I just can't describe how happy I am that both of the series exists. They are the reason why my passion to medieval fantasy is feeling more alive than ever before.

      @@LWSA I am surprised none of the reviewers I've come across are likening Dungeon Meshi to Record of Lodoss War OVA-the granddaddy of fantasy anime. This OVA clearly inspired Ryuko Kui with some the story choices and character inclusions. Watching both shows makes for a holistic viewing experience.

    • @jemleye
      @jemleye 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@HousekiMitai My issues with Dungeon Meshi's pacing is more contained within certain episodes. Trigger has an unenviable task of condensing generally two manga chapters into one episode, but the manga chapters are getting progressively longer and denser as the story continues, and cuts have been made. Most cuts have been fine, but some do affect the perception of the characters, and with the amount of material to adapt, they've also had to streamline some scenes and story beats where the manga enabled a more ponderous, slow pace suitable for dramatic moments. This was especially my problem in the first half of episode 23.
      Still, not a massive problem, but shows where the anime adaptation hasn't been able to 100% utilize the potential in the manga, whereas I feel that Frieren's anime has done that and more, elevating the anime higher than the manga ever got (still, with the manga being great too).

    I think the main difference is the start of the series that dictate what is popular or not.
    Frieren starts so strong, the premise, the characters, the world,etc. it reveals everything the series is about at the start. Like many shonens the first episodes make you start wtching the series but i would even dare to say the rest of frieren never reaches the peaks of emtion or story beats they did at the start...also like many shonens. I would say the current cast is the same from start to finish both mentally and goals wise. if you see most reviews or talks about the show they are focused most of the time in the start of the series for a reason, it is its strongest point.
    Dm is the contrary it starts simple, maybe too much for any new viewer. So many more casual viewers wont bother trying to discover the series becauae they will see just a monster of the week comedy . But those who did those who really like fantasy and stuck to it will end up discovering the series themes, stories,world, character goals and fears in a natural and progresaive manner. Makin it not just a good fantasy anime this is a GOOD fantasy story. Most people wont talk about the starts of the series but they will try to talk about the series as a while to sell it to you because the strenght of Dm relies on its atructure, is one of the few series any of their fans will tell you "it keeps getting better" and that is rare nowdays
    I do think there should be more comparision between both fireren and dm but feel fanbasea will be so defensive of both when comparing the similirities and stablishing a framework of what ia better. After all they both share many concepts executed differently so things would get heated.

      I watched it and dropped it after 4 episodes. I genuinely don't understand why people praise it so much. I skipped ahead and saw some sick looking fight scenes but nothing else. Maybe it's the humor that turned me off, idk...

      It largely depends on the magazine in which they are published. Shonen refers to a demographic targeting young boys. However, this doesn't mean that every shonen will be a battle shonen like Naruto. You shouldn't pay too much attention to demographics; they aren't 100% black and white. Sure, you can look for shoujo romance that fits the stereotype, or battle shonen that fits the stereotype, but there are also many outliers that won't fit the stereotypical mold, such as Frieren.

      Uselessness of the demographic tags aside, It kind of lines up with how people like and hate it. Dungeon meshi is subtle, while Frieren slaps it's premise to your face.

      @@lumberfoot_jpghonestly the overarching theme of eating proper meals and the laid-back atmosphere is very prominent throughout the show despite its premise (looking for laois’ sister), so if you prefer more action-based animes (seeing as you’re looking for more fight scenes rather than the dynamics of the characters), i can see why you dropped it. i personally was quite annoyed by marcille the first time i watched it, but as i kept watching, i grew to enjoy the unique quirks of each character, their dynamic with one another, the worldbuilding, and the cooking process in each episode. i’d encourage you to keep watching bc i did that and it really grew on me, but if the show is simply not your preference, i understand :D

    Frieren just another show with great style and nothing more. It’s good example of good hype promotion by gigguk or some anime reviewers.
    Dungeon Meshi is greatest by its own. I really don’t understand why the heck I need Freiren when I have DM? Great world building, interesting characters (also their relationships), millions of details and awesome humour (not stereotypical anime shit).
    Author has great purview. And it’s great to explore world with person like that. Pure imagination without childish assumption.

    Couldn't get into DM. The whole monster eating focus isn't even remotely interesting to me. I know that the story gets darker later in, but honestly, it takes way too long. The only character I even like the humor of is the elf girl. I don't find the rest of the cast funny. So I just don't care about the later part of the story even if it actually does interesting way later.

      @@HousekiMitai I don't watch jjk either. Seems kinda empty overall. Basic shounen with great fight animation like Demon slayer. I only watch mha because I started the Manga and like super hero stuff. But even mha I only rank 7\10. Nothing ground breaking,just another shounen jump battle shounen heavily controlled by the ranking poles and publishers and editors. I still enjoyed it enough but that's just the western comics influence I originally had curiosity about in starting it. Shounen battle is not my favorite kind of anime/ Manga.

If it's long running shounen battle, the modern version of only following the Manga and doing short seasons instead of weekly without breaks is far superior. Reading the Manga for older series is far better. But couldn't get into one piece Manga or bleach or fairy tale. For different reasons I gave up after 50 chapters.

      Horrible take. The manga is award-winning in Japan and was considered excellent long before the anime aired. If something is carried by its animation, it would be Demon Slayer. Also, Frieren's animation isn't simply "good animation." The animation is incredible, with a lot of subtlety, and the visual storytelling is amazing.

    • @HousekiMitai
      @HousekiMitai 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      You can say it's overhyped, but saying that is carried by the animation is WILD lmao. The animation is just the cherry on top.
      They have great dialogue, discussions and characters. The worldbuilding and magic system is pretty straight forward, not that complex which is fine, since its not the focus and the animation, as good as it is, it was never reeeally necessary on a series like Frieren... Its a common trend that I see in the internet when people just take a well animated series and say "oh, the animation carries this show" because they saw a shorts of a scene that is animated by a god-tier animator. Its like they have this "hate" towards a well animated adaptation, when they don't even try to prove their point and why they think like this lmao. At the end of the day, its just to try and get someone's attention and look where I am.

    • @HousekiMitai
      @HousekiMitai 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@myne5689Ayo, I was not trying to put the names LMAO. But yeah. Demon Slayer is solely carried by the action, hence why animation carries the show. The characters are very one dimensional, simple plot with the idea of "there are those enemies, each one more powerful than the other and the heroes must fight them". Its a series that I couldn't see myself reading, unlike Frieren and even Chainsaw Man that are so easy to eat an entire volume in a couple of minutes lol.
      This doesn't make Demon Slayer a bad anime by any means, its just a way more suitable anime for this "animation >>> everything else" type of argument (that I personally find really annoying, honestly)
