    Treat your fuzz like a treble booster. Run it hot through an amp just at the point of breakup and then dial your gain sound with the volume pot. Great example of this would morning son by Rory Gallagher

    • @theccarbiter
      @theccarbiter 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      everytime i do that it just ends up sounding too muddy. I usually run a treble booster or overdrive before the fuzz into a clean amp.

    • @the_nondrive_side
      @the_nondrive_side 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Even better.. Using two parallel coils whether strat Tele or a series parallel switching humbucker.. Set the fuzz all the way to oscillation and then turn back the volume, switch to series or a single coil..
      You now have the entire range from doom to light overdrive.
      If you can't get to oscillations you need to lower resistance still. 16k humbucker in Parallel is usually 4k and has a bright tone.
      Germanium Fuzz Face is the only way.

    I am a rhythm guitar player. I don't really care about lead tones or leads in general--I wanna hear how chords are affected by a pedal or amp or whatever.

    My favorite “clean” sound is a Strat through a Fuzz(face) with the volume rolled down. And, I love having mayhem at your fingertips by rolling up the volume.

    • @whynottalklikeapirat
      @whynottalklikeapirat 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine too. I have one of those stupid little red fuzz face mini's and it sounds completely amazing as a clean when rolled back. CS strat into 71 super reverb. It's not bad to begin with but the sound just opens up both warn, beefy and bright and clear ... some years ago I tried to copy that sound doing A/B between a Boss GE-7 with the guitar volume up and the FF with the guitar volume rolled back. Not the same thing, but it gave me a fairly similar EQ profile for a boost for other pedals with less impedance issues.

      Josh Fowler, I took my JHS Pollinator off my board because it wasn’t as reliable/consistent as I would like? My particular pedal has some issues. Really like the sound of Germanium Fuzzface type pedals, but hate how random they can be. Very interested in the Tone King with its adjustable bias, and three voices. How do you like it? Any negatives?

    • @joshfowler8360
      @joshfowler8360 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@druwk i like jhs but dont have any i buy botique pedals for that very reason i try not to do the mass produced thing il pay more for hand built reliability quality and tone! i think the kingtone mini ge gets muddy at high gig volume so i would recomend thorpyfx warthog- jam rattler or spaceman titan2 these pedals do a better job at gig volumes leaving some clarity intact imparting fuzz and also great overdrive tones so the silicon better for gigs ge better for bedroom and recording also i found it didnt really have 3 tones but the adjustments let me find that 1 tone so not super versitile wich is why i got it probly wont sell cause it does sound so great and the bias is awsome. verdict 1 of the other 3 pedals will take minifuzz germaniums place on my gig board

    • @druwk
      @druwk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Josh Fowler, right now I have a EQD Hoof Reaper which does quite do the clean up trick, but comes close. Still learning the pedal. I agree, Germanium sounds great by itself, but gets lost in the sauce.

    Hey Chris great vid as always, I went on my fuzz journey about 10 years ago with an analog Man Sunface ,and that is really a fuzz that gives stellar clean tones through to driving lead tones, however you need to be cranking your amp for it to work right. I subsequently now have quite a few different Fuzz pedals, from a vintage rams head big muff, to new takes such as a PigDog Tonebender type and all things in between, what I have discovered is some Fuzz pedals will work with the volume control and others not so much, but all have their own voice and are a lot of fun :-)
    PS bought your album great work, and Sally has a great voice so I get why you guys are doing what you do :-)

    Maybe this is why, despite owning a bunch of fairly high-gain Fuzzes and a couple of traditional silicon Fuzzfaces, I keep going back to my germanium Fuzz. It's lower gain and cleans up a lot better than the others. I never touched that volume control on my guitar until quite recently and it was a revelation. Brought out the best in pretty much all my Fuzzes (except for Muffs, but who knows what they are - Distortion/Fuzz/Other?)
    Man, you are such a fine player. Props.
    NB: it's an old MI Effects Neo Fuzz. It is a bit higher-gain than a regular ge Fuzzface but can do lovely low gain/boost tones. Discontinued, so it goes with me to the grave!
    That volume control is powerful, folks.

    Early-on in my musical-journey, I wanted to be minimalist with my gear. Both for the challenge & because I was broke and hated the awful jobs in my little hometown. I’m a singer and play rhythm mainly, so amp-overdrive and volume-riding was my thing for … 30-years? Geez.
    Then, the pandemic happened & I started watching gear-channels & buying pedals. My playing has come a long-way & my tone is exactly what I’ve heard in my head for years.
    I’m recording a debut-album in Hollywood at age-52 … My white whale after a 17-year illness that I miraculously steered out-of. There’s been delay after delay & L.A. is a nightmare right-now, but things are starting to roll & I’m having a blast.
    You’re an amazing player and a likable guy. I love the channel and thank-you for all of the advice, entertainment & inspiration. ☮️

    Volume knob clean up is one of the best measures of a good fuzz( non Muff types).
    For a long time, first pedal in my chain was a Zvex Fat Fuzz Factory.I miss this not so much for the singular, crazy, noises it was capable of, but for it's great clean and light drive sounds when turned down.Such circuits can easily be used in an "always on" pedal capacity.Suprised that info came so late to such an educated player.

    The basic fuzz circuit is ridiculously simple, but fortuitously favors the desirable even-order harmonics AND, as you showed, is highly responsive to guitar dynamics. The guitar actually becomes part of the circuit, which is why the fuzz must be the first pedal in the chain (no buffers!). I set my guitar volume so I can play clean and then get breakup when I dig in...the best "touch sensitivity" of any pedal design I've seen. You demonstrated it well.

    The pedal sounds great, and so do you of course! I discovered an interesting thing with some of my fuzz pedals too. I knew that Jimmy Page had used a Tonebender for the first Zeppelin album, yet I noticed that very rarely did he sound totally fuzzed out. Even with it on, he had dynamics and articulation. I figured he had to be playing with his volume knob on the Tele. So I turned up the fuzz all the way and backed the guitar off by almost half and I suddenly had the tone from "How Many More Times"! (no kidding!) I first tried this on a D*A*M 1966 fuzz and it also worked on my Wampler Velvet Fuzz. I'm not sure if it would work on your Pedal Pawn, as it seems to really clean up quickly, but if you have other fuzzes, you might be able to get some very cool "in between" sounds just by playing with the volume on the guitar! Never ending fun.

    I get all the way from lush cleans to square wave oscillation with my germanium fuzz face.
    Parallel Humbucker coils and setting the fuzz just below oscillation at full volume.
    Switching to series coils imparts a more Driven sound and a less fuzzy character. Oddly parallel coils into a fuzz face Set up like this will be louder than series coils.
    Turning it down and even turn the tone pot back can shift a little treble fuzz overtone.

    For as good as you are a player, I'm surprised you didn't figure this out earlier. Now try it with super fuzz variants! Use volume and tone controls and get ready to be blown away!

    As speaking as someone who has all 3 Diaz pedals I concur Even with just his TX Ranger that's my base core tone is great IMO Pedal Pawn is actually making a clone of the Ranger as well

    Interesting. The result definitely depends on the pedal design: I use a 1980s Guyatone PS-015, which doesn't really clean up. I had a Boss OD-3, which did clean up, but had far too much inbuilt compression, so it went on ebay. I also have an EHX Glove, which is excellent and does clean up with the volume control.
    For years though, I kept my guitar volume flat out, and used pedals and/or amp channels to vary both volume and overdrive. Then I got a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue, which is so loud I had to start using the volume control and found this to be a great way forward. My best tones have been gigs where it's just guitar, cable, amp, but I do usually still take a pedal board, if only for the convenience of the tuner pedal!

    Strats are in a league of their own, as are you Mr. Buck. Tremendous tone, gorgeous guitar. I know you're particular about the darker fret boards in general, but how did you like the performance out of this maple neck?

    Oh man FuzzFace pedals are the best thing in this life.
    I've bought a FF type pedal from a friend for a production i was in.. I didn't know anything about fuzz and it took me a lot of time to get the idea... Just put the fuzz knob on full and use the volume knob on the guitar. Also reacts differently to pick/finger playing. specially on the low notes.
    Since then I've been trying many many FF pedals and I always come back to that first one I've got.. Its just special (and rare) Greenhouse Effects Jurassic Fuzz. Ge and Si hybrid.
    Tried: Analogman BC183, Dunlop JH huge one, Dunlop blue Si one, Fulltone red and blue.. probably forgetting some more.. They are all great, but don't clean up as much.

    Great Demo, great playing and wonderful pedal. Would you please elaborate on your amp, is the strat stock, and settings on the Fuzz? Thanks
