Pedalboard Rundown: • Friday Fretworks - Ch...
Thorpy Gunshot in action: www.facebook.c...
Guitar: Fender Highway 1 w/ Radioshop ID:ChrisBuck Signature Pickups (bit.ly/IDChrisBuck)
Pedals: Analog Man K.O.T, Origin Effects Cali76 CD, Catalinbread Echorec
Amp: Guitar Rig 5
DAW: Logic Pro X
For gigging, for me it has to be accelerator, brake, clutch
Wah wah accelerator!
I see you’re a manual guitarist.
Lmao ...
I like that
I only use 2 pedals, on my bike!
I have a tuner, chorus, delay and OD. I've used the same setup for over 30 years. I've tried different setups from time to time but always go back to the basics.
I don't care about the pedals, I'm just here for the utterly incredible playing at the end.
I can live with reverb and gain on my amp but I can't live without my Boss GE7 EQ pedal...I honestly think EQ is the most important pedal I have..it can give you great gain or scoop the mids....my 2 cents..it lets me get my sound from different guitars and pickups
I find not scooping the mids, when playing in a live setting, helps to cut through the drums and bass. The GE7 is a great pedal.
@@christschin3708 absolutely...boosting them can turn a strat single coil into a P90 sound pretty easily...I would honestly love to have two on my board for that purpose
@@riverman6655
Yeah, a decent EQ pedal can do a lot. 👍🏼
Agreed. It's fun having one on either side of a gain pedal - you can turn a humble BD2 or Big Muff into many shades of drive and Muffage
It’s like one of those mythical beast I always hear about but have yet to see a proper tutorial on using 1 to change the sound depending on guitar/desired effect I just always leave a little confused
As gorgeous as the pedals are, the magic is in your amazing feel and touch for the instrument
Those tones though! Chris, your tone and taste is so inspiring. I’ve been playing for over 30 years and you’re making me excited about finding new sounds. Love the channel!
Murray Williams Cheers Murray, that’s incredibly kind of you. Thank you for watching 😊
My three go to's are the Breville coffee maker a Ditto repeat and a good flushing toilet. Ready to rock!
Chris,
My three indispensable pedals are these:
I love the Origin Effects Cali 76 compressor for the same reasons that you do. It’s an “always on” pedal. I do pair it with an Xotic SP comp so I can get that extra bit of compression and an additional set of harmonics when I want them without any one pedal doing so much that my sound screams, “Oh, so you have a compressor on, then.” The compressors are first in line on the board.
While they are different excellent animals, I prefer the Klon Centaur to the King of Tone. For subtle overdrive, it has not yet been matched. However, many who have a Klon do not turn the gain up very far and thus do not experience all that it can do. Similarly, the tone knob is very sensitive and can EQ your tone very nicely.
The third pedal in this “essential” list would be the Fender TRE-VERB. With the choice of optical, bias or harmonic tremolos and ’63 (big box),’65 (in amp ) and the rarely-modeled plate reverbs, it’s all I need for those effects. All of this pedal’s effects are clean and articulate but with good harmonic content. It’s a very good pedal and I use it often.
As have you and many others, I too have had numerous pedals on my board over the years and have often changed them. So far, these three are keepers.
Oh, and I also appreciate simplicity in all things, particularly music gear.
Cheers.
I love how you shred, without actually shredding. What f*cking voodoo is this, Mr. Buck?
Feel, energy, flow. He's got the mojo!
I like watching this stuff while doing chores before heading down to the studio.
PLEASE DUDE, do a video showing off your magic guitar rig sounds!
Wonderfully expressive and inspirational playing!
That clean tone is not sterile. Beautiful sound. Thanks for sharing.
Clean Tone my @ss... Wet with reverb from the amp.
@@josephhynes5874 Clean tone doesn't mean dry signal. It just implies amp settings that are before or just at breakup.
You have an awesome sound to your playing! I was just saying to someone yesterday, how effects can inspire you so much! If you just have a clean sound, it can get very boring. The effects give you tones that push you to be creative and come up with new things all the time. I'm on a tight budget so there's not a lot of funds for pedals. I'm waiting for an overdrive pedal to be delivered any day now. I can't wait!
I agree! When writing songs, the effects really give you a different path for inspiration, kind of like using differents paints for a painter so, hope you have a lot of fun 🤙🏼
@@emmanuelbenitez9628 yep...I've been having a lot of fun. Hope you are, too!👍😎🎸🎶
Yes, the Cali 76 compact deluxe is just the best comp. on the market.
I agree with the king of tone sentiment. I have overdrives of all types...zendrives, tubescreamers, sd-1, klon this, transparent that...blah blah blah. But the KOT has been the main drive on my pro board for over two years. At this point, it’s a matter of familiarity and reliability. It reacts predictably to any tweak in any environment with any guitar. I’m sure that given any unique situation, you could find a “better” sounding overdrive (although even then...things are way too subjective, really). But when you look at the bigger picture...the KOT sounds good EVERY time in EVERY room. Above all else, that kind of track record makes it a really difficult drive to replace, although many have tried.
Chris I really like your videos. There are so many these days but you’re different and I can relate to your videos. Keep it up man! Cheers
Gary Jarvis Thank you so much Gary!
I thought the sterile clean tone sounded absolutely amazing.
I use the Tumnus, Cali 76, and Echorec and I still sound amazingly mediocre. Obviously I need to get an original Klon instead of the Tumnus and that should fix it.
@@Bluesbreaker-uf8ti I know you are being cheeky, but just to say: I got an early Klon before they skyrocketed in price. I think I paid like $225 or something like that. I really like it... for very specific situations. For me, on certain amps, it sounds mediocre to bad. Same for most amps at medium to lower volumes. Where I find it shines is taking an already fantastic tone, that already has some nice grit and at loud volume where the amp is working pretty hard, and then kicking it into this singing lead tone that cuts well. But, in my experience, it does not just take a solid clean tone and make it fantastic. I can only use it at really loud gigs, like outdoor festivals or really big auditoriums. Since I’ve not played those in many years, the Klon just sits on my shelf. :(
I could be not setting it correctly, but that’s my experience anyway. So I just share this to add a different perspective to the praise it often gets.
@@ShiningEyeBrigade Cool, yeah I could see that, I don't love the gain structure of the Tumnus by itself into a clean amp but I like stacking it into other drives or just turning off the gain and using as a clean boost.
@@ShiningEyeBrigade are you wanting to sell your Klon 👀
I always think the same thing
The dynamics in your playing is just incredible
Yep. The Cali76 is the first "sexy compressor."
I thought that was Melissa Owens Miller?
Awesome Chris. Your playing is inspirational and so good to just listen to...and that tone....hmmm
I got on a pedal building kick around 2010. No experience, had no clue what i was doing, just looked up some schematics, researched what a transistor was, and resistor, capacitor, op amp, etc...bought parts, and started soldering.
To my suprise everything i built sounded as good or better than anything ive ever played.
I made an ocd pedal, based on scematic i found online, and then bought the actual ocd, looked at it, and it had more transistors than what was shown on the schematic i found, but to my amazement, the one i built sounded every bit as good and same functions as the ocd, complete with a mid scoop switch. I also built 2 fuzz pedals, and another overdrive.
Was quite an addiction, had to give it up for other time constraint reasons, but i only use the pedals i made, have not bought one since.
Loved all the tones, including the unaffected clean! My poor mans solution to this setup is my Keeley 4 knob comp into a EHX Soul Food straight into a Katana 100 MK2 with a Foxtone Echosex in the effects loop. This actually works, it's my standard bedroom setup.
I really love how that Foxtone sounds. Wish they had made one of those like the Catalinbread works, with mult head option.
The full size Echosex is killer, but I don’t thing I’d bring one one the road.
Sorry for a comment on an old video, but I've just recently discovered your channel. This month I moved From a large house where I had a whole room for a studio to a 31 foot travel trailer. I literally now have 1 guitar, 1 amp, and 3 pedals. Overdrive, Delay and a Trio that puts in bass and drums. Cheers!
Sounds like a fair amount of rev on there in addition to the pedals.
That 'Clean Tone' was hardly clean. Filled with reverb.
Jekyll and Hyde
Tech 21 Blonde
Neunaber Wet
It's insane how much ground you can cover with that setup, and no amp required!
Great video. For me. Strymon Riverside, Dig and Bluesky! With Boost and Favorites of course
Amazing tones bro! You started out with good tones and the pedals are just icing on the cake.
Was kind of hoping you wouldn’t pick the Echorec but jeeez, you DID. Aaaand the GAS comes rushing back!🤤
Really good pedals for sure. I think the KOT as great as it is sounds boxy. It just sounds like a pedal much like a great tubescreamer with a little more full sound. Have you tried the kingsley page or effectrode tube drive. I moved to the effectrode tube drive that allows for some tube changing in the pedal( I use two 12Au7 and a 12At7). It made my kot sound small and very much stiff and boxy in comparison. That little bit of sag feeling and real amp bottom end with the tube drive just sounds like an incredible b channel. Love your playing. Been a fan for years and I'm using much of the same gear as you so thanks for sharing some of your secrets.
I have three delays but I have the echorec on all the time because of the preamp in it, it is a very cool underated pedal.
Holy crap that demo of the echorec was gorgeous! Well done Chris.
"... it makes a strat more... stratty" Love that comment - i run a compressor for exactly the same reason. Strattiness!
LP Jr into 1) Analogman Sunlion, germanium treble booster and fuzz face 2) Keeley Aria, compressor and red dirt od 3) always on EP Booster or Klon Klone, depending on how I'm feeling. Into Vox AD15VT, with upgraded speaker and 12ax7 tube, the combo has 11 inbuilt modulation effects. Pretty nice little setup. :)
Great Video Chris, sweet tones and playing! Always nice to pair stuff down every once in a while and just play with a few special effects! Cheers Mate!!
Very nice video! My 3 pedals i can't live without are Fuzz face, CE2 Chorus and Danelectro FAB Delay
I saw you at the Birmingham Guitar Show, awesome performance!
Amazing tones, excellent playing! Impressive.
Your tone is incredible amazing! Please, take a picture (or make a video) from the Guitar Rig setup (amp, cabinet, controls, etc). Thanks!
Thank you Marcelo. GuitarRig breakdown video coming soon, I promise :)
Can't wait!
what speakers do you run through for it to sound so good?
Thanks for turning me onto the Echorec. Best delay ever imo. It’s friggin Gilmour in a box.
Check out the volante and Timeline by Strymon. There pricey but fucking brilliantly made.
Really liked that Cali76. Beautiful
60’s J bass reissue with a thunderbird bridge pickup in the neck spot into CE-2 from the 80‘s into a Jen Double Sound Fuzz-Wah into 3 Hiwatt custom 200 heads and cabs equipped with CVs. I’m literally fucking off my head insane.
yo Chris I met you at the Birmingham guitar show and I are actually talking to my dad about the pedals and I are such an inspertion thanks
12:49. The Echorec is divine!
Nice job again, Chris! Would love to see how you set up guitar rig to get that amazing sound. Cheers!
I built a pedal combining Compression into overdrive. It's actually a kind of one trick pony, but it covers a lot of bases when used.
Dead thread, but... As someone born and raised in (West) Texas and still resides there (South TX) who has (purposefully) never owned a pair of cowboy boots, it's always a shock to see them elsewhere in the world. Not a criticism. They look cool, and can be an all-purpose boot/welly.
TS 808, Archer Ikon and Way Huge Echo Puss. Perfect Trio for me :)
Some John Mayer fan here...
@@nikolaubtopou people were using those pedals before Mayer became what he is
You’re a guitar wizard. Thanks for great video! Loved the demos of the pedals as well. Now I need a compressor...
This video makes me want a compression pedal. That clean tone alone sounds great, just amplified a bit with the compressor.
Can't go wrong with those three. From my board i would have to choose my homemade duo drive pedal, Deja-Vibe and Volante.
Simply beautiful! No other way to describe it.
Morning Glory, Flux Echo (but I the Echorec is also a favorite), Flint.
Secret Preamp too, but I never turn it off so I just think of it as part of my amp now. 😆
I'm with you mostly. I have come to love compression but I would swap the compressor for the phase. To me echo/delay are essential along with distortion or overdrive. And I put my compressor First when I run it.
I always keep coming back to these three pedals - Diaz TX Ranger into a Analogman modded TS(1st run TS9) to a Ibanez AD-9 or Lovepedal EPH3 Can't help but notice those 3 pedals of yours add up to over a 1000 pounds
I don’t need pedals, but I’d say
Wah
OD
Univibe or delay
It’d be real hard to chose the last one cuz I use both at different times, but they aren’t a staple for me. Honestly I’d probably run neither or both and go with a corresponding 2 or 4 pedal setup rather than just running one or the other
A good tube screamer, a delay...used sparingly and a wha...also sparingly.
That's it.
I was thinking about an amp 11 a while back n came across ur demo, convinced me pretty quick to get 1, like it more n more everyday. THX
I just wanna post the most benal comment ever right here -> Man ...I so LOVE listening to this man play guitar.. I just LOVE IT
Love your pedal choices. I would pick three similar but different pedals off my board. Keeley compressor pro, Menatone Fish factory overdrive and Dawner Prince Boonar delay. Of course I have a Les Paul And Marshall Jubilee in the Arsenal for the no pedal necessary approach too :). Cheers Chris glad I was introduced to you on That Pedal Show. Keep on playing! Oh ... and I am on the long waiting list for a KOT. Someday :).
I've just ordered a cali76 Sacked Editions compressor, I've been really impressed by all the reviews of the sacked and the compact deluxe. Had to sell a few things to afford it. Maybe one day I can get a king of tone. It sounds out of this world. Great video man!
David Dorrian Just ordered mine today how do you like the Cali76 SE?
@@HerkyOJerky unbelievable, nothing like any compressor I've tried before and better than any other compressor I've tired before. You dont hear it grab the note. It's just amazing
David Dorrian Thanks Man! I bit the bullet and can’t wait, I can’t see them dropping much lower then $379 anytime soon. Thanks again for the info!
I never had compression pedal tried a few mxr I have took it off board in 5 min just purchased Cali 76 stacked think it’s what I wanted I’ll see but love it in every ones videos so jumped on it can’t wait to get it ...
Not come across your channel before today - really nice playing....
CATALINBREAD ECHOREC!! Fricken love mine!
JHS Twin Twelve V2 (the external foot switch is nice, so you get overdrive to distortion sounds)
Caroline Hawaiian Pizza (Really unique sounding fuzz and heavy overdrive. Has enough weirdness if I want to mix things up)
JHS Unicorn (kinda open to change, I want to get a better univibe at some point, but this is what I have right now)
it sounded really good I am going to look up the echorec
Thanks to youtube for allowing me to find you! Now Im really digging your playing!
You are an awesome player and as a blues based player I should have suspected amp reverb, which suggests that the effect you can't live without, to the point of not considering it as such, is reverb. I totally agree.
Bone dry clean sounds like nails on a chalkboard garbage unless your venue gives natural reverb, or you are playing traditional jazz and the archtop and amp are topnotch.
Otherwise the no reverb players (lots of guys who use drenched sounding delay claim to hate reverb but I believe they simply don't like tradirional spring reverb with overdrivenn tones).
Having said that cranked tube amps without reverb can sound great, but bedroom level bone dry amp sound requires absolute pristine set up, perfect intonation, perfect tuning, perfext technically speaking, and liberal doses of vibrato, bending precisely to pitch, and great dynamics and phrasing.
Don't get me wrong, although some guys use so much reverb that it has a billowing effect. The opposite effect of what reverb is meant to accomplish, which in my opinion is not cover up sloppy playing, but to give width and depth to the sound, inspire the player by making the rig somewhat more forgiving.
The opposite experience of going to a party, getting put on the spot to play, and the host pulling out a $50 garage sale guitar with 20 year old strings, no set up, with said POS guitar living in his garage untouched prior to being thrust into your hands, and when you try to say "well there is amp, so what's the point?" the nightmare becomes real as he presents a dusty pigsnose amp and 4 foot cord covered in sticky duct tape that makes a crackling hissing sound as The host plugs in the guitar already in your hands. The minute you touch the tuners to get the thing as in tune as possible, which probably makes things worse, the mere act of turning the tuners, pulls the neck into submission and the first chord you play makes you feel sick and embarrassed, like you are taking a dump in a crowded prison cell with multiple strangers evaluating your level of disgustingness with a variety of facial expressions ranging from cringing, smirking, amused at your embarrassing performance and pity (the most kind in terms of intent but the most crushing to your ego) .
Every guitar player who is serious enough to be known as someone who is fun to watch play, has had this experience and, hopefully learned that you only play your own gear or the gear that a cursory visual lets you know the owner is a musician and takes care of his reasonably decent gear.
For example, he has a guitar on a stand with clean strings, maybe other guitars in the room, some sort of music library, a functional amp like a fender blues junior or some other quality small amp. Maybe he even has a couple of recognizable pedals like a fulltone OCD, or some other quality overdrive and a TC electronics flashback or Boss digital delay.
Now the odds are in your favor that you can play up to your capability and maybe even enjoy being put on the spot.
Ahhh, the pros and cons of being a guitar player. 😆
you’ve inspired me to get my Cali76 back out and replace the Unit67 on my board
Hello Chris, my congratulations for your playing and your wondeful tone. What about the reverb you use in this video?
Thanks!!
I watched to find out how to get your tone with pedals, but now I want to know how to get your clean tone too!
Hi Chris, your tone and down to earth nature. New here and loving it - wishing all the best with the channel, the new record and the band. Cheers
Sorry, love your tone and....
Didn't really get compression but lovin these cali 76 beasts
Your "sterile clean tone", as you put it, is amazing.
There surely MUST be some amp reverb on that tone, and yes - it's a fucking magical tone.
That 'Clean Tone' was filled with reverb...
@@josephhynes5874 that's why I put it in quotes. I guess he is referring to clean in regards to no hair/od/distortion? But anyway, sounds good to me.
Get Bob to do a tour of his kit!
Well, guess who bought a compressor pedal after watching this ??? Your a diamond sir..thanks
Anytbing other than a Gibson into a tube amp is for sure black magic. But times is tough.
The joyo ac tone is my pedal I can't do without !
Awesome collections of pedals on that board even the old bluesbreaker pedal by Marshall I used that for a long time. For me my favorite 3 is catalinbread Belle epoque, catalinbread Rah pedal and my zendrive. But that's today, lol.. the Belle epoque I just love that pedal very touch sensitive you can get modulation out of it and the preamp boost is real nice that's probably my favorite
Fred Nielsen Cheers Fred! I’ve been really intrigued to try the RAH. I’m guessing it lives up to the hype? And of course, the Zendrive is incredible. Come to think of it, I don’t know why I don’t use mine more!
Buck and Evans The RAH pedal is extremely touch-sensitive works great with humbuckers and you don't necessarily have to do the Jimmy Page thing but it does remind me of a hi watt type amp it's just a cool pedal
My EQ pedal, digital delay, and afterNeath reverb.
Cali 76 stacked edition, noble odr1, and dunlop echoplex.
Great demo! I usually use the Boss TU-3 -> EHX Soul Food -> EHX Crayon -> TC Electronic Flashback :)
Pelican Noiseworks 50/50, demedash T120 delay and Ventura vibe
That bit you played at about the 9:30 mark, was beautiful, man.
My whole sound is distortion, delay, and chorus. Those are the three I can't do without.
80s :)
@@mattgilbert7347 That's when I came of age, so that's the origin of my artistic sensibilities and musical style.
For me it is the Tim i have 2 i love them.
How is your KOT set up? I know Analogman offers many options for each side such as high gain. I don’t know which way would be best but yours sounds really good. How is your pedal set up from Analogman?
I can only wish to make my gear sound like this. 👍🇦🇺
Hello man great playing but was is the name of the device where all those pedals are on and you don't have to dance to use the pedals. Best regards
Nice playing
I came here looking for pedals. Now I want those pickups....
What pedal board and switcher are you using in that set up? Love your board man, could really use the space and simplicity/efficiency with the growing list of pedals I have lol. Thanks!
Sounds so Good. 🤙🤙
Overdrive/distortion, delay and Wah + reverb and tremolo from your amp and you are set.
That's some pretty tone right there.
Compressor, tube overdrive and reverb. All you’ll ever need
i use no pedals at all, i love my telecasters bein' played straight to any of my fender amps.....i got gain, reverb and tremolo in my fenders amp (not the tweed ones)......not quite often i use a wah pedal, delay and chorus, dependin' on who i play with....well, i use a looper too......but i mostly play my guitars straight to the amp......
My Ceriatone Centura -> MXR Carbon Copy -> TC Hall of Fame 2
Chris - any chance you could tab out Slow Train? Maybe do a lesson /tutorial video on how to play the song? Or at the very least how you lay that heavenly mid section you use the Echorec for?
If I had to choose just 3 = F.T.T. Tri Avatar multi-Chorus, Boss DD-500, Barber Electronics Gain Changer or a 2 channel OD.
1. Boss BD-2 Blues Driver
2. Boss TR-2 Tremolo
3. 3 x Boss MT-2 Metalzone's running in unison. (or a TU-3)
El Rey Dorado and a BOSS compressor make my world go 'round.
The additional ‘effect’ is those killer boots. I am sure they channel something to the fretboard
