Green Papaya Salad, known as "Tam Mak Hoong" or "Som Tam," is a popular Lao dish that you can find in Luang Prabang, Laos. Here's a brief description of this delicious salad:
Green Papaya Salad is made with shredded unripe papaya as the main ingredient. The papaya is shredded into thin strips, creating a crunchy texture that pairs well with the vibrant flavors of the dish.
The salad is prepared by combining the shredded green papaya with a variety of ingredients, including tomatoes, green beans, chili peppers, garlic, fish sauce, lime juice, and palm sugar. The ingredients are mixed together and pounded in a mortar and pestle, which helps to release their flavors and create a harmonious blend.
The result is a refreshing and zesty salad that offers a balance of sweet, sour, and spicy flavors. The addition of fresh herbs like cilantro and mint further enhances the taste and adds a burst of freshness.
Green Papaya Salad is commonly enjoyed as a side dish or appetizer in Luang Prabang, accompanying other Lao specialties. It's a popular choice for its vibrant colors, bold flavors, and refreshing qualities, making it a delightful addition to any meal.
When in Luang Prabang, you can find Green Papaya Salad at local food stalls, street markets, or Lao restaurants that showcase traditional Lao cuisine. It's a must-try dish to experience the authentic flavors of Laos in this beautiful city.

I want that mortal that she has; it just makes the papaya salad look scrumptious. I've never seen one in any oriental stores at all.
Hadassah Autumn Hahn Have you tried online?
even when u follow it the fish sauce won't be as good as you actually eat it in Laos. Best papaya is in Laos.
Tam maak hoong must be made with padaek, not nam pa.
wow 'aroy de sap de!' koop jai!
Are those tiny eggplant fruits going in there? The white and purple fruits what are they? THX =-)
Are they cheap cuz the portion is really little. 3 bites n than gone! Need more papaya though.
+Chhavy Sisowath Because eating less taste better? This kind of food are not meant to be full but to satisfy your taste buds.
+Chhavy Sisowath You cheap loll its probably 5 cents
Iamyellowmushroom This kind of food you can eat as much as you like without getting fat. :)
Sebastien Le More like $1.50.
Remember this isn't in the USA, where portions are out of control. That was fine and different people have different variations on what they put in their papaya salad.
Whoa that's a lot of msg pretty common in Laos... :):):):) Yummy though!
What did she put first? Salt sugar? Or msg? Shrimp?
Msg ...

Anybody knows the recipe? Very difficult to figure out what did she put it there
The ingredients are:
Green papaya
Cherry tomatoes
Sugar
Msg (optional, u dont really need it)
Thai chili peppers
Lime juice
Shrim paste
Crab paste
Padek sauce (fermented fish sauce)
Purple baby eggplant (idk what it is actually called but this is also optional)
You can also use many other ingredients to make papaya salad, but the ones i listed is what the lady used in the papaya.
U can actually subsitute many things when making papaya salad. If u dont have padek (optional), u can use fish sauce. U dont need to have padek but for laos style papaya, ppl use it. As for the purple ish looking eggplant, u dont need it. A lot of ppl use the small green eggplant or chinese long green beans (optional as well). Crab paste is also not really needed, only if u r making laos style or want ur papaya dark. If u cant find cherry tomatoes, u can use grape tomatoes or buy big juicy ones instead, but preferable cherry tomatoes is recommended bcuz it is much juicier and easier to work with. As for monosodium aka MSG, this is optional, many ppl use it in their papaya but u dont have to. It is only used to give the papaya more taste to it and the taste is no different from using sugar.
There is no precise measurement when making papaya salad. It is up to how u want it to taste.
And i love putting roasted peanuts in my papaya salad so that my salad can have a nutty taste. Just a tip lol
I meant to say shrimp paste.
And some ppl like to use dried shrimp in the salad to give it a salty taste but that is up to u.
Hope this helped!
emily lo thank you so much for putting it together for us English reader.
Mee Yang no problem. Glad to help! =)
Forgot to add, u do need fish sauce in papaya salad! Fish sauce is the main ingredient. But if u r using padek (fermented fish sauce) then u dont need regular fish sauce. Bcuz the padek already has fish sauce in it.
