Respectfully, when looking at the feedback, the audience doesn’t really know what this device is. I think you are correct that its a slightly misunderstood device. Glad you found the video good, but I'll admit that I think I too wanted it to be something else... And at the end of the day not all products are for us who love sequencers and beatmaking tools
I agree. Form factor and large screen are great. Isn't it interesting that more and more companies are effectively releasing unfinished products (or products with potential as you put it) into the market and letting the consumer response dictate where to take the final firmware. I don't think it is any surprise that this is happening more and more. For example, the Push 3 (which was basically unusable for the first 4-6 weeks post launch), the Polyend Play which was good but has kept getting better and better etc etc
My honest opinion is that the newer mpc line has better sampling capabilities, plus legit soft synths, plus more IO, etc, etc. They also have some insanely great effects, that can be controlled on a touch screen including an xy interface. If you are looking at this, I would at least check out the mpc live which you can get second hand for $5-600 right now.
If this was $800 with sequencing & song mode, I would get it. But for $1000 without standard 1/4" ins/outs & no sequencer or song mode then I can't really justify the price. Hopefully Korg will do an update for the OS.

Sorry, Korg, your marketing department is completely incompetent, and disconnected from the reality of consumers. They need to be fired OR send them on a trip where they can see how simple folk like me are making music. At $ 1 399, I can buy two Roland SP404MKII. Is a steep price for having a device that just does 1 fx at the time (and that was kind of the selling point) can't be powered by an external battery, uses two different usb ports (usb c AND micro usb) sampling is kind of so. And reminder that the mini kp series and kp series are discontinued I had hope when korg announced the kp3 vst ( in which you can modify a lot of parameters) after they invested into nu teks and an oscilloscope (really?). But im pretty unsure about this
A lot of negative talk about this unit but i believe it may be a game changer in areas most groove boxes falls short at sounding profesional once mastered. For starters most groove boxes suck at transitioning and properly timing effects so they sound profesional. The fact you can control the depth of the effects is important, the imidiate looping at at a stroke definitely plays an important part as well..
Yeah this seems like it would be great for live performances or making music on the fly in the studio. Especially if you’re sampling from source material. The ability to load whole songs on the pads is great. I also like the Group A/B faders.

Not having any sequencer here is a bad thing. I've thought that it has general sequencing things inside. It looks natural for this. Korg looses opportunities sometimes... The "marketing" stuff as always I guess ))
Bo, please get to know to the midi capabilities of the Replay. You got the Circuit sequencer next to the Replay. You don't need a sequencer in Replay as it is a triggerable sampler and the hot cues are triggerable behind CC too. Don't be lazy, I encourage to read the manual and midi charts. I find that many reviewers have missed the purpose of this equipment. Which are sampling, effect sampling and platform for triggering samples. Not sequencing and arranging in key or scales. Replay would work particularly well with Squarp Hapax for example.
Yepp you are correct, it can trigger samples externally from another source. But I don’t think a 1300 usd sampler with a big beautiful screen should be without a sequencer. Much like the Sp404 mk2 which didnt have a sequencer at launch, but when we complained about it got added in which was amazing! You have also missed the point of the device. While you can trigger samples from a midi device it is designed as a self contained device. Korg even markets it as such. Thats why I don’t review it as a sample playback ”module” like the 1010music Tangerine. On the Tangerine a sequencer is a bonus, on the chaos it is important. Because what the Kaoss allows you to do as a sample module is not anything spectacular. You don’t even get poly sample playback per pad or chromatic playback like you do on the SP. So as a module to be sequenced by an external sequencer it is… very pointless. And it is not designed to be used that way primarely.
@@BoBeats The difference is the sp404-chromatic playing via midi and Replay-hot cue playing via midi. I thinks it's brilliant. Thanks for replying and the video!
When Korg released the Kaossilator mini, they had one for effects and manipulation of effects....and then another which was actually a synthesizer. I hope they do that again, the control surface can do a lot more than manipulation of effects
Several years ago I paid $1200 for a live 2. As far as I can tell, the x/y effect on that MPC can do all the things the central gimmick of this device does… only I get so much more for the $200 difference… If this cost $500, my argument would be, “this isn’t for me.” At $1000 my argument is “this is for OP-1 field users…” and that’s about it.
@@jeltoninc.8542 I didn’t say it was a bad tool. But just because I won’t light money on fire pretending I get something out of it, doesn’t make the OP-1 worth the smoke…
@@jeltoninc.8542 I like how you think you know anything about my budget just because I won't light money on fire and pretend the smoke is useful for something...
Either it should be an RMX-1000 replacement OR a Toraiz SP-16 replacement. But ultimately fails at both. If it was an effects unit with multi I/O then this would be interesting. I think it should have tried to tackle just being one thing and nailed that instead of a multi function printer that really isnt a great printer, scanner, copier, or fax machine. Maybe there is hope with software updates, but that is never a great option for consumers.
I’d love that but it would likely be 600-700 if it has a touch screen. 390 is what many basic pedals cost nowdays (see for example eventide effects) so I think it would likely be much more expensive
I would have been all over this thing a decade ago. It's a great upgrade to the old KP3, keeping the good parts and greatly expanding the weaker parts. But in 2023, it seems a bit overpriced or underpowered compared to what other brands offer.
I'm not sure how much they pay their marketing team to determine their prices, but the recent Drumlogue was definitely a bit of a stretch in price, especially when it was competing with the TR8s. The two faders are awesome, but it's no Pioneer. I come from dj'ing since around 99/00, and I haven't found much gear to stimulate me enough to use it more than using my laptop/ipad to create music (except Roland gear), but this definitely intrigues me. However, just because it has a touch screen doesn't mean they've earned the right to more than double the cost of the Roland 404. I had considered trying a used kaoss pad, but even at those low prices it doesn't entice me enough. At this price it seems like they assume that this will be a centerpiece... or that someone will rely heavily on these effects during a live setup. Not allowing samples per pad is a bit odd. I do like it when Bo recognizes the 119 bpm versus the 120 bpm and says, "I don't know who's to blame there." Part of me feels as if he's also taking a jab at their overall audacity, as well. My opinion, of course. Cool tunes btw, Bo. Thank you 🤙
Glad you enjoyed the vid! It was a difficult video to make as I strive to explain gear ’as it is’ and not focus to much on ’what it is not’. The intent of the Kaoss is not to be a production focused device. But I do feel there’s improvements needed for it to justify the high price tag. Just like with the Drumlogue. Its a good comparison you made. Btw speaking price tag the build quality is far superior to the SP404 so I recon that alone accounts for some of the price difference. But then again the SP is a remarkably well priced product. Its like the MPC One. Hard to beat at the price!
@BoBeats thanks for the feedback. I do like that Korg is being innovative. I also wouldn't trade my XD for, well... I wouldn't trade it for much. I will definitely be keeping my eye on the price of this machine. Hope your new studio serves you well in the future.
It looks like what I can play with in Logic Pro 10 which is awfully fun. Given I purchased Logic 7 as a huge box with books of instruction and got Logic on my recently upgraded M2 MBA 13", this type of audio manipulation is fun and fast results for older people who started with 80's era tech. $0.02
It’s really hard for these company to have a all in one unit. If something is missing, you end up buying everything for the fix. If this thing would a Sequencer , it definitely would have killed a lot of the competition easy. It came through the door looking like a Sp404 . Also a Smpl trek effect looking thing . Well …….Smple Trek is about to drop a new unit.
With usb audio and resampling, you can connect an iPad and probably overcome those shortcomings today. The beat match and faders are key on this thing.
I think the form factor and the simple operation are great. I love it. What annoys me is the poor midi synchronization between e.g. Elektron A4 and Kaoss replay, this is inaccurate and gets out of hand over time. Hopefully this will be fixed with a firmware upgrade.
@@Jason75913 YT isnt the place ? Not clear what you mean. Was trying to say that I agreed with the comment, Korg needs an affordable option. Was my comment inappropriate in some way? If so i can restate
@BoBeats I can't get the KOAS replay connected to MIDI, what am I doing wrong? is there a fix for this? Can someone help me? On the Korg website there is a download text for the MIDI implementation. Do you still have to install it?
I've just always have loved the spontaneity that can come out of KP's... It looks like they might be keeping true to that while also adding some serious sampling muscle... But I agree, a sequencer isn't much to ask with this hardware... Add step locking params via the x-y pad and HOLY-ISH
1. The Kaos Pad always had terrible midi sync 2. The omission of squares on the XY is a big loss, I play those like a piano with the OG Kaos pad in my set. The squares let you do really accurate delay FX, like adding a quarter note delay to the occasional snare.
Question: So the HotCue's are supposed to be used to switch between parts of a track or Stem as you said? So i press a cue button and the part then loops or does it just jump to the part and play from there without looping?
It jumps to different parts, unsure wether you can turn on looping for that part or not. You can turn on gate to have the part only play for as long as you hold the hot cue button.
@@BoBeats the manual states that it should loop to loop length from the cue point as long as the trigger pad is run in loop mode. Which would mean that you cannot have loops on the hotcues with different loop lengths(which traktor total can have) I'm just trying to confirm that feature.
@@BoBeats try it like this: put in a drum loop sample, set the trigger pad to loop mode and configure a loop that is half the size of the drum loop you loaded. Set a cue point on the beginning of the loop, set a second cue point half in the file at the end point of your configured loop. What happens if you switch between the cue points. Cue 1 should play the first half of the drum loop, cue 2 should play the second halt of the sample. The next question is, does the switching of the cues quantize like in Traktor. Ah damn. I'd really like to fiddle around with that box, but I don't think i have the influencer oomph that korg would send me one. Thing is, this might fit exactly into my live act setup. Fun fact, i use pre produced loops and abuse Traktor as a loop player for my base beats, the musical layers on top of those i add using the Octatrack and a complicated routing that puts both stereo channels Octa and Traktor through a little stage box that lets me side chain duck the Octa channel with the Traktor Beats. I really hate fiddling with sequencers on stage, so Traktor was the logical way out i concluded at the end. That little box could in theory replace it, but i need to do more research on that.
Korg have been making a habit of overpricing their gear. The Drumlogue, Wavestate/OPSix Deluxe all come to mind. I have been a massive KORG fan since the 80’s, buying their products on a regular basis… but I find my interest in their products is on a steady decline.
I agree with this, their stuff has become increasingly more expensive since the days of the first Minilogue. a shame really! drumlogue could have competed much better if it was 100-200 bucks less
Yep. I love my Korg D1600 multitracker - it had the mojo of the Tascam 244 and was better than the Rolands (I had one of those too for a while so it was a direct comparison). I like my Volcas but the WaveState launch made it look like it was only good for ambient pads and the Opsix bizarrely wasn't fully DX7 patch compatible (ADSR? Really? 😂) so I bought a used DX7 IID instead. Ironically my faith in Korg is shrinking while my faith in Roland is growing.
To me it works even if it doesn’t have a sequencer.. it seems designed for me in mind. I use a Hapax as a sequencer and need something like this for sampling purposes.
As a sp-16 owner i can see how this one could replace that in a live/dj environment, at least the sample playing, for fx the Korg is way better. In a way it’s octatrack inspired as well for the live looping part. Hope electron takes notice for the OT MK3
The DJS-1000 or Toraiz SP-16 is significantly more useable in live performance than this is. The Korg isn't really a sampler or looper or sequencer. Everything has to be set up prior. I would say even the polyend play is more suitable for live performance than this is. This should also have a mode to control the KP3 via Korg weird midi implementation of that unit.
Guys, I have a big dilemma there... I love the work flow of the Sp404 Sx.. But I had a really annoying bug that nearly blew some of my gigs in mid performance...( 6 pads are linked by paire...🤷🏽♂️) I bought the MK2 and I was Very satisfied of it, i nearly use it just for FX and lunch one pad at a time (no step sequencer, no DJ mode... But a bit of sampling yes) And just this weekend, it's started to Bug too even if it just 2 years old. Oo ( CTRL3 keep coming back to the same position on the screen, and continue to move even in the option menu or the chop menu) I had to many problems with Roland and I surch for an alternative... This Korg seems to me to be a good one but there is a lot of wrong comments in there... Do you think of another alternative that do effect and samplers as good as SP or this kaoss?? Hope to have some answer cause the FX of the SP is a big part avec my show and a big part of my identity, but I can't continue like that...
what I have been looking for is a device which i can put end of chain as an insert fx on my mixer, into which i have my synths and mpc running (which does mainly clocking duties and percussion). I am a DJ, so I wanted to create live and on the fly and build up the beat, then once it's rolling record in 16 bars into a looper, which i can do fx on. Meanwhile building a another basic track in the background which I can then cross fade to at the right moment. but it would need a split cue on it... and that sampler really needs quantize to be able to pull things together properly. any ideas if this is a possible on the Kaoss?
I am hesitant to say that you could do this. In my video in the overview section you can see me record a live beat from Circuit tracks onto a sample slot, then fade from live input to the sampled loop. The problem is that it just doesn't seem to perfectly sync. And I can't say for sure WHY this is. If its the Circuits clock that is unstable, or some other reason. Thats why in the video I say that i don't dare call it a live looper. If they manage to fix this sort of beat quantization or sync then it would indeed work reasonably well for the use case you ask about. But in my testing its like 95% there, but those last 5% needed for it to work like that is really important to have beats line up in sync.
Octatrack is an interesting option for sure. Quite the learning curve. So if Korg can get this aspect right i think the Replay could be an accessible option
Interestingly, just like our iPhones, technology is getting smaller and more powerful. This thing is definitely a device I need to put on my list. I just got to figure out how it will enhance what I do. To me it borrows some of its functions from the AKAI MPC LVE, but my LIVE does alot of this. Not everything. The MPC LIVE is a DAWless Synthesizer and can be difficult to understand. But it does a lot and the big question is - is it worth $1,000?
Hi Bo and respective viewers alike, I was thinking recently, that the music that we know and love from the 90’s and 2000’s etc (‘The Golden Era’) and even more recent are, for a big part, made up of SAMPLES. I was looking at a vinyl record I have the other day (it’s the same on the CD version) and it was listing all the Samples used in their tracks. The way it worked Before, I’m guessing, is that the record label did the sample clearing process, so the artist was left to the creative process. So even though i went to ‘music production college’ and did a few full year courses, I don’t have a clue in the process of clearing samples etc or how to get the the permission to avoid copyright or whatever, so I feel I am left limited in my options and in the creative use of sampling. It’s BS to me that artists should be expected to know the ins and outs of music business, the creative process and time it takes plus the learning of methods of production and of using the equipment is more than a full time job entails, as you are very well aware, but this is maby venturing off into another point. Would be cool to hear your opinion re: the sampling clearing process, if this is something you have delt with or come across this aspect much? Any feedback welcome.
When i saw this thing i wanted that immediately, but i remember what shit products korg actually make. And that sound, i still remember that shitty delay. Never in my life i would buy anything from korg anymore!
Looks like Korg is looking for an empty spot on the market to be filled with their product. I got it now - it's a performance tool for finger drummers - basically it is advanced SP404... Marketologists look what pips post on youtube groops and see a lot of finger drummers playing one bar loops that they made. Korg decided to make a machine that's easier to use that MPC. I bet more than 50 % of MPC users don't use MPC's full potency. Pips just throw melody loops and one shots from Splice and finger drum with them. This unit is perfect for this too. With a good marketing this unit will be able to become#1 finger drumming performance tool.
This not an advanced sp 404 mk2 there are some similarities with the effects but the 404 mk2 is a self contained sample workstation. Not even near the same as an MPC. This is a looper and effects box with pads for performing live.
@@ameeqalli4248 Well sometimes controversial things make their way to success. As for me - I'm not getting this device, especially for its price point - I got new Akai Force for 999 recently.
I think the MPC One is a very different device. And for most producers a way better product. This is definitely more a dj/live show kind of product even tho the design make it look like a beatmaker tool. The One is however not as cheap as it use to be. No sequencing, quadraphonic sound out. Sample editor librarian, Internal memory, multiple fx assign to pads / section , one effect at time is lame ….i can do all of this in djay2 , yes it’s just an app, but in 2023 moving into 2024, sampler with out stem separation is a drag. Could have thrown Korg Gaget in there for sequencing and still market it as Dj tool …. I’ll enjoy my KP3 With SP404mk2
It’s a cool device but it has zero utility for me that I don’t already have. The question for me is who is this for? Seems more like a DJ tool or live performance only tool.
I can't help but wonder if they're aiming this as half of an Electribe replacement duo, with the other being based around something like the Kaossilator. It's promising in some ways, but it's so cut down in others that it seems hard to make a case for it as a standalone/all-in-one the way even an SP-404 would be. Korg have an infuriating habit of getting *so* close with their gear, and then leaving it critically flawed.
I had and sold a KP3 years ago and have been waiting forever for the next version. I'd use it mostly for sampling or resampling.... but no... I will never buy it for that price. $400-500 tops for me.

11:51 you can tap the compressor on a standout one-shot to create brief emphasis rather than dragging around the XY pad.
So it's like a MPC One but does less and is more expensive. 😅
Yep.
I don’t see how it’s like the Mpc one? Sounds like you never used a Mpc one. The closest thing you could compare this to is the sp 404 line

Not having any sequencer here is a bad thing. I've thought that it has general sequencing things inside. It looks natural for this. Korg looses opportunities sometimes... The "marketing" stuff as always I guess ))
I don't even make music but I want this thing.
Get koala sampler on your phone for $5!
Neither do most of the musicians who spend time watching these videos lol (myself included)
This piece of gear doesn’t actually make music either, so no worries
As far as I can tell, the x/y effect on that MPC can do all the things the central gimmick of this device does… only I get so much more for the $200 difference…
If this cost $500, my argument would be, “this isn’t for me.” At $1000 my argument is “this is for OP-1 field users…” and that’s about it.
Lmao the op-1 field is such a great instrument. Just because it isn’t for your small budget does not mean it’s a bad tool.
@@jeltoninc.8542 I didn’t say it was a bad tool. But just because I won’t light money on fire pretending I get something out of it, doesn’t make the OP-1 worth the smoke…

Maybe there is hope with software updates, but that is never a great option for consumers.
the SP404 was too complicated for me, but I'm a big fan of the kaoss pad, so this does interest me, esp. as a live performer. Great review!
I think this is what Korg has aimed for: a simpler, easier to use device for sampling and effects processing.
I don’t know is it just me but it seems way more complex than the SP
It’s complicated but if you spend some time with it it’s actually really intuitive once you get used to it
This would be a cool gadget as an FX box with some added features at, say, 390 EUR, and a no-brainer around 290 EUR. But at 1000(!)EUR? That's crazy!
So where is the sequencer on it?2024 and with out seq?
Yepp, no sequencer. Not aimed at beatmakers/producers from what I can tell
I feel like with a bunch of good future firmware updates this could be something close to Serato Studio in a box.
With usb audio and resampling, you can connect an iPad and probably overcome those shortcomings today. The beat match and faders are key on this thing.
I am definitely hoping that Korg listens to the feedback on firmware improvements. I had a few and saw Loopop and Taetro provided a few.
Can one perform full tracks on this?
I think the form factor and the simple operation are great. I love it. What annoys me is the poor midi synchronization between e.g. Elektron A4 and Kaoss replay, this is inaccurate and gets out of hand over time. Hopefully this will be fixed with a firmware upgrade.
I like this. Don’t even know what it is, but I’m ready to spend my money 😂
A thousand dollars worth of your money?
I went to the stores through your links and it seems it's not available yet.
That's pretty normal with those video.
Maybe wait some days / weeks till they are available.

Wish they were making a new version that was just effects, already have enough samplers.
How is this doing anything I can't do on my MPC? I don't understand how it costs so much.
1. The Kaos Pad always had terrible midi sync
Yes I think you are correct. I cant figure out a way to make the cue points loop since they refer back to the trigger pad @@mr.psychotronic5406
1099€??? This is crazy expensive
To me it works even if it doesn’t have a sequencer.. it seems designed for me in mind. I use a Hapax as a sequencer and need something like this for sampling purposes.
as a performance sampler it would need "assignable fader" for scenes, like the Octatrack has
This is best compared to the pioneer DJS-1000, not all these other grooveboxes. And it may hold a candle to it with some updates after feedback.
yeah that make sense!
Would've loved some thoughts on build quality given the price. Seems like a 90's device.
Build quality beside the micro usb for data transfer (usb c for power) is great. Built like a tank. Metal body and quite heavy compared to say an SP
Guys, I have a big dilemma there...
I love the work flow of the Sp404 Sx.. But I had a really annoying bug that nearly blew some of my gigs in mid performance...( 6 pads are linked by paire...🤷🏽♂️)
I bought the MK2 and I was Very satisfied of it, i nearly use it just for FX and lunch one pad at a time (no step sequencer, no DJ mode... But a bit of sampling yes)
And just this weekend, it's started to Bug too even if it just 2 years old. Oo ( CTRL3 keep coming back to the same position on the screen, and continue to move even in the option menu or the chop menu)
I had to many problems with Roland and I surch for an alternative...
Pretty cool... But I'll stick to my SP404 MKII.
Was curious about this one but seeing how close those faders are to the tiny pads is just a bit of a fail in my opinion
what I have been looking for is a device which i can put end of chain as an insert fx on my mixer, into which i have my synths and mpc running (which does mainly clocking duties and percussion).
You can get an Analog Heat+FX for the same price.
Wonder about an octotrack… only a bit more….
Octatrack is an interesting option for sure. Quite the learning curve. So if Korg can get this aspect right i think the Replay could be an accessible option
I'd prefer they just do a Kaoss effects box for an affordable price.
i would love that
Interestingly, just like our iPhones, technology is getting smaller and more powerful.
I’ll wait and pay 3000 for the new electribe 😅😂😢

I can't help but wonder if they're aiming this as half of an Electribe replacement duo, with the other being based around something like the Kaossilator. It's promising in some ways, but it's so cut down in others that it seems hard to make a case for it as a standalone/all-in-one the way even an SP-404 would be.
