  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Gary Lewis, Rock and Roll Legend, Founder and Lead Singer of “Gary Lewis and the Playboys”
    About Harvey's guest:
Today’s special guest is the lead singer of one of the most popular and successful rock and roll bands in pop music history, “Gary Lewis and the Playboys”.
He’s the son of Jerry Lewis and singer Patti Palmer. His mother, who was performing at the time with the Ted Fio Rito Orchestra, intended to name him after her favorite actor, Cary Grant, but her son became "Gary" as the result of a clerical error.
He received a set of drums as a gift for his 15th birthday in 1960 and when he was 18, formed the band "Gary and the Playboys" with four friends. Joking at the lateness of bandmates to practice, Lewis referred to them as "playboys", and the name stuck.
Their many hit songs, including “This Diamond Ring”, “Count me In”, “Save Your Heart for Me”, “Everybody Loves a Clown”, “She’s Just my Style”, “Sure Gonna Miss Her” and “Green Grass”, are part of the soundtrack of our lives. With 8 Gold Singles, 17 Top 40 Hits, 4 Gold Albums, and 45 Million records sold worldwide, our guest is the first and only artist during the 1960s to have his first 7 releases reach Billboard magazine's Top 10 on the Hot 100 chart.
In 1965, he was named Cash Box magazine's "Male Vocalist of the Year", winning out over Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. He and his band made numerous appearances on popular TV shows including American Bandstand, Hullabaloo, Shindig, and The Tonight Show. AND he’s one of only a handful of artists who appeared FIVE TIMES WITHIN 2 YEARS on the Ed Sullivan Show.
With the re-emerging interest in oldies music, “Gary Lewis & The Playboys” continue to tour and entertain their millions of fans around the world.

I really enjoyed interviewing the wonderful Gary Lewis, as he’s lived an amazing life and gave us so many great songs. If you read (or listen) between the lines, I think you’ll detect that he was actually saying a lot about his Dad, the legendary Jerry Lewis. I was hoping to convince Gary to consider writing a memoir, but it’s clear that, in order to give a true and complete account of his life, the pain would be too much. Obviously some of his memories are just too traumatic. Of all the interviews Gary has given, I think this is one of his most candid and intimate. I’m very grateful for that. I hope Gary’s fans will enjoy this very special interview.

@harveybrownstone7840, One of the most famous and popular bands in US history, the Wrecking Crew and Gary Lewis' voice was dubbed with another persons voice because Gary's was not good enough. That is a fact. I'm a guitarist and singer and I've been in bands all my life.

Gary looks like an older version of his mother. Glad he’s happy, well adjusted and doing his thing. I respect the fact he does not wanna do a tell-all type of memoir knocking his dad. That alone shows what a class act he is.

Jerry Lewis was not a well-adjusted man because when he would come home his wife would tell the children to be careful your dad is on his way home. So, they would disappear from not being around to bother his father. His father, Jerry Lewis, would act one way with the audience and at home he become angry and not very kind around the children.

@@homegown1234 very true. Disappointed in him as a man cuz for someone that brought joy onscreen was such a jerk in real life. How he treated his wife and kids in private was really no one’s business, but still. I’m proud of Gary for finding his own way and not letting his past with his dad stop his own personal and professional progress in his life.

This is a phenomenal interview. Thank you so much for this post. I had the pleasure of seeing and talking with Gary and the Playboys after their concert in Cobleskill, New York (upstate). Gary is one of the most personable, down to earth gentlemen I have ever met. He is amazing and so respectful of his fans. Everyone danced and sang and had such a wonderful time at the concert. After the concert he stayed and mingled for a long time. He never rushed anyone through the meet and greet. I think he would have stayed for hours just talking with the fans. He posed for photos, autographed CDs, and was soooooo very nice. I would love to see him in concert again in concert. He is only a few years older. My hometown is only about 30 minutes from the ⚾️ Hall of Fame. Thank you again for posting the interview. Would love to send Gary a note. 👍👍

I am glad I got to know Gary Lewis thru this interview. Saying "HI" to an American vet. Loved your songs when I was in grade school. Moved from Nevada, and they played your songs. Moved to Salem as an adult and your songs are on the radio. Moved to Phoenix Arizona, and Portland Oregon, and the radio still rocks with your songs. I dug your sound, not just for sale, but substance.

I loved Gary Lewis & The Playboys' hits in my teens. I also love the covers. When a hit was found they would record other major act hits like The Kinks and The Beatles in order to get an album out fast. Stereo on the additional tracks was Gary's vocal on one side and everything else on the other. I found by turning the balance I could sing lead making them the first karaoke tracks. Of course, I had no idea I was being backed by Leon Russell, The Wrecking Crew and The Playboys.

That can't remember now. To me, you are a legend and always will be. And one of my favorite all time bands ever!!! You and your father Gave me some of the best greatest joys in my life. Ever! I still love your music it is timeless. Your father's movies and your music still bring me much joy to this day... I would have still loved your music in the 80s and have all these decades. Wish that you would have put more music out, don't doubt yourself. You are An awesomely extremely talented person. It runs in your family!! I wish that you were still touring and playing. I half jokingly tell him all the time, "Son, if I had your talent, I'd be showing it off every single day!" @@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 Absolutely, and that hurts me for him. And I had to agree with you about how Jerry must have 'in his own way' been proud of Gary for his accomplishments by having him on his telethons and variety show, etc. But knowing how Jerry Lewis was, it could have just been more self serving than a true proud dad moment, and that's sad.

Great interview. First time on your channel. I have seen Gary many times over the years. Always a very friendly, humble class act. It must be sooooo difficult to always live in your dad's shadow & having people ask about him when the interview is supposed to be about you. I wish he would write a book but Gary needs to be comfortable with that & it appears it will never happen, but that's ok. Many of us can read between the lines and know that the relationship Jerry had with his children was strained & conflicting. Honest guy, Gary. I totally understand his reluctance to write his book. It would be a smear on his dad sounds like, so he's very thoughtful on that point. Everything doesn't need to be shared. But, makes you wonder just how tough it was living with Jerry Lewis as your dad. Jerry was the most magical and charismatic person, but he had his bad side as most bi-polar people do. You love them and hate them at the same time. When Jerry was on the upswing, no one was more charismatic - he could reach through the screen and you could feel his magnetism. Powerful for sure.

Many know that his dad was not a perfect human let alone a perfect father.
