    Of you have plants close to another, it will not get big. 2-3 feet apart will get you HUGE flowers. Lol. Love the different sizes. Great flowers. Tfs. 👏🏼👏🏼🌻

    I'm in ny, started last summer planted 4, 3 grew inside in a pot then i transferred them in a large pot outside. They were dwarf. About 3ft tall then the squirrels ate the heads off.

    I started some too after seeing this video, got them to about 6 ft before they bloomed. Sadly they all snapped in half before I got seeds from them. any tips there? Id rather not stake every individual sunflower i wanna grow in the future

    Thanks for this post! Just planted my mammoth seeds yesterday (about 20 or so) and anticipating some displays like yours. I've noticed smaller plants in recent years like yours too -- guessing I too, transplanted too late so this year I will transplant when the seedlings are a few inches. I live in So. Cal and will plant Amaranth as well. Thanks!

    Try again next time with much better soil and I think the genetics of the plant will give a much larger flower. Everything needs good food and sunflowers are no exception.

    I have planted several varieties of sunflowers for the first time this year. I planted plenty so that even if the squirrels and other animals eat some, I’m hoping they won’t eat all of them. The day after transplanting an abundance of seedlings in my yard, a squirrel dug up about five of them. He didn’t eat them, he just dug in the hole where I planted them, I guess looking for a nut or seed. And of course, in doing so, he uprooted the little plant, leaving it to dry out in the heat of the day. I like all animals , however the squirrels are beginning to get on my nerves. I’m starting to have evil thoughts about them that involve a slingshot.

      All of the seeds got dug up and eaten the 1st time I planted. I replanted using 1" square plastic mash that I got in rolls at home depot.
      As to seedlings emerged through them I used a pair of scissors to snip out a space around each seedling to allow the stock to grow to its full diameter.

      ricadon100 : That’s a good idea. I thought about that, but I planted the whole pack of seeds. I believe that every one germinated and they all look healthy and ready to grow. I started them in pots and trays outside and tried to transplant all of them in my yard, but ran out of energy and space. Oh well, let’s see what happens. Surely the squirrels won’t ruin all of my plants. 🙁

    I’m growing sunflowers myself & also live in South Florida. I start them in pots because the snails eat them up if I sow them into the ground. Did you have that problem?

    • @UncommonOrchids
      @UncommonOrchids  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Snails weren't a problem for me, but diatamaceous earth sprinkled on the soil can keep crawling critters like snails and slugs away.
      I sowed direct as sunflowers get very long taproots very quickly and they get stunted in pots

      that will protect it from slugs at first, then you should plant it out when it has about 6 leaves

    I’m currently trying to plant mammoth sunflowers but I noticed there are bite marks on them so I’m guessing a bugs are eating the leaves. They are just now sprouting so they are veryy little and tiny rn. What should I do/use to keep insects off ?

      Ok I'm sorry for being almost a year late but I have a tip for you
      When you water them water them with soapy water (dawn dish soap is what I usually use) just sprinkle/spray the plant and leaves and after a few minutes the bugs should go away. This seems to work really well for me. Hope it helps! :)

    What month is this....how long till it got this high...and what is your soil ph? Good idea on the plastic mat as i have critters thst will go to great lengths to get seeds...squirrels possum rabbits birds....and a mystery creature that.eats garlic..completly...i love the little guys for flower arraingments...good to know on direct seeding.

    • @UncommonOrchids
      @UncommonOrchids  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The plastic mesh (home depot) has to be cut a bit as the stalks thicken..some can be more than an inch thick..
      Don't know soil pH, although most South Fla soil is alkaline, as we sit atop fossilized coral rock. Started them in March, and they were blooming in less than 2 months
