I've eaten one raw, because the deer were eating them and I wanted to know why. It was fine, I can see how roasting it and removing the flowers would make for better texture. Plus what isn't improved by olive oil and garlic!

When I was young I would go fishing with my dad and we always had sunflower seeds. And for two weeks during the summer I would get to stay with his parents and again, sunflower seeds. I don't eat them now as I watch my salt intake but I do like the 'peeled' ones on occasion. Good memories. When dad passed, I placed a fishing lure and a bag of sunflowers in his casket.

Quite interesting. Someone said once the buds could be cooked to be like artichokes. I don’t know why I never tried. Also, since you have gas range you could singe it before adding the oil, to get roasted flavor, then add oil garlic, cook it in a covered skillet in very low heat. A sprinkling of paprika and rosemary you add the scent.

Sunflowers are my favorite flower in general and I also enjoyed eating the seeds. OMG, especially if they’re flavored seeds with spice. I eat them like my country uncles did when I was a little girl. Put a few in at a time and get all the good flavors or even just salt off then crack the shells, spit out the shells, and eat the nuts. I have a large produce garden as well which includes two different sunflowers this year instead of just the Russian variety I planted last year, which was great too! I can’t wait to try cooking and eating the whole thing.

So my child asked me if he could eat the sunflowers I grew this year; me not sure, found this video. My sunflowers are tiny compared to these on the video. I did pretty much what you did, made a vinegar, spread on top, wrapped in tin foil with a small base of oil in the wrap. Honestly, the taste was freaking great. I thought it looked like broccoli and the seeds were all white under the yellow flower buds. Thanks for the video and teaching me a new great food!

I get the zen of sunflower seeds perfectly. It’s also true of pistachios (in the shell) or peanuts (in the shell) or yes, Maryland blue crabs (in the shell). Though sunflower seeds are the ultimate since the ratio of shell to meat is about 3:1. For all of them, your hands are busy, you’re eating small bits so your mouth isn’t full and the conversation can just peacefully wander around into odd interesting corners. It makes for a nice evening with friends or with the members of your family you actually like.

Eating sunflower seeds is the one thing that can actually keep me awake. It's not energy drinks, or caffeine in general. It's that burn of the salt and the mechanical process of throwing the seeds in your mouth, popping them from the shell, and then spitting the shells into a proper receptical that just keeps my brain going enough to maintain awareness. Great for long drives or boring days on the job.

I eat a pound of sun flower seeds a week. I cook summer squash and cauliflower. The sun flower seeds go on top to support cheddar cheese.
