Eating an Entire SUNFLOWER HEAD! 🌻

  • Sunflower heads are...surprisingly good? Here's what to do:
    Harvest when sunflower is still green on back, seeds are tender. Pluck off ray petals and brush off disk flowers in the middle to reveal seeds.
    I used olive oil and homegrown garlic and made a slurry to coat entire surface. Broiled 3-4m, rotating for even coverage, then wrapped in foil and baked at 375°F (190°C) for 15 minutes.
    Topped with fresh basil and marjoram, salt and pepper. You can eat the entire thing if you want, but the seeds are the most enjoyable!

    I've eaten one raw, because the deer were eating them and I wanted to know why. It was fine, I can see how roasting it and removing the flowers would make for better texture. Plus what isn't improved by olive oil and garlic!

    When I was young I would go fishing with my dad and we always had sunflower seeds. And for two weeks during the summer I would get to stay with his parents and again, sunflower seeds. I don't eat them now as I watch my salt intake but I do like the 'peeled' ones on occasion. Good memories. When dad passed, I placed a fishing lure and a bag of sunflowers in his casket.

  • @suburbanhomestead
    @suburbanhomestead 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Quite interesting. Someone said once the buds could be cooked to be like artichokes. I don’t know why I never tried. Also, since you have gas range you could singe it before adding the oil, to get roasted flavor, then add oil garlic, cook it in a covered skillet in very low heat. A sprinkling of paprika and rosemary you add the scent.

    Sunflowers are my favorite flower in general and I also enjoyed eating the seeds. OMG, especially if they’re flavored seeds with spice. I eat them like my country uncles did when I was a little girl. Put a few in at a time and get all the good flavors or even just salt off then crack the shells, spit out the shells, and eat the nuts. I have a large produce garden as well which includes two different sunflowers this year instead of just the Russian variety I planted last year, which was great too! I can’t wait to try cooking and eating the whole thing.

    I think this is what I should do with my sunflower seed heads when they're ready. At least some of them.

    Brlliant... As far as eating the seeds, I enjoy eating them whole including the shells. I slow down and chew them well. There's good fiber and dietary fats you get from them. This was very inspiring...
