Lord have mercy. How have I never run across this channel before?! This is great. I've got several of your videos added to watch later or I'd be here binge watching all day! definitely subscribing. thanks for all you do in taking time to share these wonders.
Just did this same hike yesterday only in reverse. I found that climbing up Indian staircase and up the ledge out of the rim towards cloud splitter seemed much safer than going the direction all you guys did. But then again that's just my opinion, whereas I'm slightly scared of heights lol. But either way that place is beautiful and it was a great video. Glad to see more people can know about it now that you have this video up!
I started this and thought there's no way that I could get through 16 minutes of it. Great video...showing some off trail ways to get to famous landmarks, frog's knob and cloudsplitter.
I found your video here about the Red River Gorge and it was an awesome video to watch. I use to camp there a lot when I was younger. I made it down there once last year but just visited a few arches. That was the first time I have been there for over 30 years. Anyway, thanks for shooting this awesome video.
Good to hear you enjoyed the video! The trickiest part of this hike is finding the tiny trail that goes around the rim toward the Indian Staircase... but if you take your time in that area it should be no problem.
Shout out from Winchester. I grew up in West Liberty without a pot to pee in. So, spent many days hiking in the gorge with an Ale 8 and a can of Vienna sausages...lol.
Very good video. Also if you didn't already know this if you come up indian staircase and go the other way towards frogs head there is a arch you can climb through and stand on the edge of the cliff. I recommend that you have somebody with you if you're gonna climb through it because it's quite difficult to get out. Again great video guys. I'm a ky boy myself.
where you got that water i got up on top in that little stream that supplies the waterfall was a dead deer after we got done puking we decided to never drink there again
The best way to see the toads head is hanging on a rope underneath it. I did my first 200 ft. Rappel and first rope climb with assenders there in the mid 1990's. Mark and I were videotaping each other hanging on ropes. When 8mm cameras just got small enough to do that stuff. Endless places to camp at the Gorge. Woke up many times places like the cloud splitter or jailhouse rock. Love the sea of fog around you effect.
I think there are even better unmapped trails to fantastic places. I've found them, and you probably have too. I don't know it's name but there is a pretty open, descending rock exposed ridge that seems to run out forever. Best place in the gorge.
You guys probably had some of the first footage of Red-Byrd Arch. Many years ago. I went there and packed out some trash. Was so tired, didn't even check out the river.
Son of a b. We camped and hiked the gorge in the 80's but never got to enjoy specialities like Indian Staircase and Cloudsplitter. I always wanted to check out Indian Staircase but no one I knew knew how to find it. Now I'm too damn old and all the camping/hiking friends are gone. From Cincinnati btw.
Thanks for posting this video. I once hiked Sheltowee looking for Indian Staircase, and accidentally found the trail to Cloudsplitter (I think)? Is there a place near the top where there is a chest high, very thin outcropping that you can look over the valley? I remember hiking a steep trail straight up the mountain to get to it. Didn't have a camera or GPS.... This must have been 1997, I think? I never did get to the Stairway, I got caught in a massive thunderstorm and had to cower in a shallow overhang until it stopped raining. Ahh... good times! :-)
The trail to Cloud Splitter has probably changed a good deal since then, considering that most of it runs along an area where a lot of rainwater flows down and erodes the path...I can't say for certain that the place you describe is at Cloud Splitter, but there are a lot of areas to explore there so I can't rule it out. Anyway we will surely be in that area in the future with the intention to explore it further.
Can you tell me how to get paper or printable maps of the hidden trails and specifically CAMPSITES of the red river gorge. Thank you , Jaime Charleston, wv
Heya. My son and I would like to start exploring red river gorge. Where is the best place to get done really detailed maps? I found one site called outragegis maps or something like that.they were $15 I think. Are there any good free trail maps?
You could check at any rest stop in the area for free maps. They're probably just as good as any you will find for sale. The best asset would be a book (like Hinterlands) that also discusses unofficial trails, since the unmarked trails sometimes cause confusion and get people lost.
25 years ago we could take a Jeep trail from behind rock house next to Frog's Head with coolers and coolers of Sammy Smith's and repelled off that rock all night long. The grooves on the top barely existed...you can see that rock is degrading very fast because of those rope grooves. You are supposed to just run off the cliff Aussie style.
I noticed you guys put GPS coordinates in the description for some of your other videos, but not this one. Is there any way you could add in the GPS coordinates in the description for this video too? I want to take this hike in late summer or early fall this year, but I have never been to the gorge.
There is a website that we have used as a source for GPS coordinates on certain trails: toredrivergorge.com. It's possible you could find coordinates for this trail on their website.
When I went in 2009 the trail we took to and from Indian Staircase was the one you took going back down. It was pretty much closed because of fallen rock. Is it open again?
About how long would you say the trek would take going from parking to Sheltowee Trace, while still thoroughly enjoying the sites? Great video, Thanks!
To enjoy everything along the way, the whole hike would take at least 6 hours, and probably closer to 8 hours or more... Can't recall how long we hiked that particular day though.
National Forests are far more lenient than National Parks, especially when they aren't shut down. Just leave no trace when you are camping, unless you have an emergency.
This video would have been better if your group would have shown Indian Arch and the "Ohm" hole..You walked right by them on the way to the rock house at Indian Staircase.I have been hiking in the Gorge for almost 30 years and my 2 favorite overlooks are Auxier Ridge and Chimney Rock.
+Jamie Williams We did in fact stop at the Ohm Dome and sang a few favorite songs. Unfortunately our cell phones didn't capture the acoustics quite like we had hoped...
Hey guys my son and i and brother are wanting to do the splitter the maps are a little deceiving do you have any tips we are leaving next week. where can i find some good maps for free. thanks
All the tips we know are in the video. Feel free to use a screenshot of our map. Remember there's a shortcut that starts from the paved road to Gladie, it's described at the end of the video.
The main map on the video is an altered version of an official RRG map that is available online. If you want to use ours then feel free to take a screenshot and make a copy.
"hidden" aka practically walked to death by lexingtonians. Don't expect to see any fewer than 20 people on either of these hikes during the spring or fall.
Hi WM, We agree that we should have captions, and apologize for not providing them earlier. So we've activated captions for this video, we hope you give it another watch. Thanks a lot for the feedback, and we will turn on captions on other videos from now on as well.
So nice to see the happy dog. Nice video!

Perfect camping guys, been awhile since I did this ..tower rock pretty cool too.
Nice! You are obviously Ky boys: Ale 8, UK gear, twang. Very helpful and timely. I'm heading that way this weekend!
Thanks!... And it's great to hear that you find it useful, that certainly was a goal of ours. We plan to post a winter hike in the coming months.
Great stuff guys. Love the Floyd in there Country Style. Phoebe wasn't excited at all.

You guys are badass mane! I'm planning a backpacking trip and this is going to part of it. Thank you so much for the video! Bad ass hahaha

Thanks for posting
Thanks for the hike. My son will be going this weekend so I know he'll have a blast. Great video!
Me & my friends call it fly rock! Cool video though! Love this trail.
It was awesome meeting you at Miguel's Pizza this summer. I hope you got to chase waterfalls this year with your buddies ❤
You too Deanna! Thanks for watching.
Shout out from Winchester. I grew up in West Liberty without a pot to pee in. So, spent many days hiking in the gorge with an Ale 8 and a can of Vienna sausages...lol.
Thanks for this! I have never been to those beautiful places. I hope to get there before summer is out!
It was great meeting all of you on Cloud Splitter this weekend. Yall are awesome!... Amy & Dean
Likewise! And we were glad to hear that the video helped you find your way around the gorge... That's our mission here.

Love this trail! Came across an Eastern Timber Rattlesnake in that parking lot, pretty amazing snake!
where you got that water i got up on top in that little stream that supplies the waterfall was a dead deer after we got done puking we decided to never drink there again
You guys seem cool. We are going to red river gorge this weekend and I hope we run into some people that are like you guys
I need to look for this trail, looks fun!

Where are your Western adventures? Dying to see them!
You guys took a hard way!!! Can get to cloudsplitter from the street within 0.5 miles
Do yall smoke flower at the gorge aswell??!!?
I knew this guy was legit as soon as I seen him with an Ale-8-1
i remember the first time i was on this same trail i loved it
You missed the ohm room. One of the most spectacular features of that trail.
Where is it at?
I clicked the Like button

HunnyBun88 2010, not 2009.
I'm not aware of any past issues with these trails... We certainly had no problems this time.
redriverunderground
Cool. Thanks!

Make a weekend of it. Take your time. : )
can you back country camp out on the trail?
As long as you are (if I remember their rule correctly) 300 feet from the trail, you can camp anywhere in the park.
National Forests are far more lenient than National Parks, especially when they aren't shut down.
Just leave no trace when you are camping, unless you have an emergency.

Thanks... all the footage is from our cell phones, iPhone5 almost entirely

"hidden" aka practically walked to death by lexingtonians. Don't expect to see any fewer than 20 people on either of these hikes during the spring or fall.
So true, I live here in Lee county which is kind of close and hike there sometimes. Always people from Lexington, always, never fails.
Stfu, you sound like a hipster hiker, complaining about everyone that isn't you. 20 people when the Gorge is full of hundreds is nothing.
So you ask everyone you see where they're from? Yeah, that's not pathetic or creepy. You sound completely FOS.
Lived in Lexington a while. I saw more Ohio plates than KY plates visit the gorge. Can't speak for the hidden trails, just parking areas.
Great video, but no wonder the guy in a UK shirt is such a square
That's hilarious… Joe Ray, Johnny Bluegrass Troy Slade and mik- em, er County Style are alright.
don't talk unless your going to have captioning, can't read lips, don't know signing either, can't hear a fart....thumbs down
