    I think Brandon is seeing a future taravangian when he calls him worse than the lord ruler. Taravangian will do anything for the prosperity of his people through brutal utilitarianism, meanwhile rashyk didnt even kind of care about his people. He created nearly a slave caste and oppressed them for an entire millennium. He purposely committed genocides and allowed for 'indecent' acts to be committed on the ska by their 'betters' without impunity. If taravangian is worse, well, i wonder what hes going to do in the second half.

      affected by the shards intent? I think there's been and there will be in the future many presidents arguibly worse than Taravangian, difference being they're not operating on world ending catastrophes. Taravangian really does seem to care about his people which is more than can be said about a lot of presidents. He's still despicable don't get me wrong, but The Lord Ruler is so much worse imo

      Well, I think moreso the volatility of Taravangian as president. If he didn't have his inner circle keeping him in check he may on a smart day send the national guard to kill a bunch of special needs children because they are dragging the country down or something.

    • @Tuonela0

      The problem with Taravangian is that he can do any atrocious act by convincing himself that he is doing the right thing. Lord Ruler, kinda gave up as he had limits and tried to prepare for the bad day altogether.

    • @ianburns1167
      @ianburns1167 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Taravangian sets out to assassinate the leaders of every other nation on Roshar to take them over, causing several civil wars with mass civilian casualties. He's killing hundreds of people in his 'hospitals' trying to get scraps of oracular knowledge, and keeps going once the prophecies stop on the offchance. When he sees someone else putting together a different plan to save the world he tries to kill them all rather than reconsider his course.
      Yes he does public education, hospitals, and trade. But the thing is that's such a low bar for a ruler. Hrathen would too.

    Havarseth seems like the better answer. For one thing he actually has experience in administration and he's involved in way less mass murder and chaos than Hrathen.

    Why not Sadeas? Yeah, I know the guy is ruthless to Damnation and back and is a bit backstab-happy, but from what we know he always did put Alethkar's interests above all else. He was a bad option only because he was a Game of Thrones politician in a world where magic literally runs on being honorable.

    • @snapgab
      @snapgab 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      He put Alethkar's best interests first only in the same way that the Sith put the galaxy's best interests first with their rule of two.
      Maybe he truly believed that going 110% all-in on the insane competitive attitude of the Alethi, where you focus solely on your own selfish self interests at the cost of everything else, would ultimately result in a stronger Alethkar because it would result in the strongest people rising to the top.
      But he's just wrong, it's a batshit crazy thing to believe, like an economist who proposes that we set all of our infrastructure on fire in order to create jobs for firefighters.

    • @FrostSylph
      @FrostSylph 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He put Alethkar's interests above all else because he was in charge of Alethkar. He wanted to support and enhance the status quo because it would give him power, he doesn't care about anything else, he admitted as such to himself when he said that he'd probably have gotten around to assassinating Ehlokar himself.

      Are we talking about Diagram Taravangian? The man willing to kill a bunch of kids because he dislikes the music they sing? Or the man willing to completely obliterate nations for the mere possibility of an interview with an evil God?.
      His curse exchange his intelligence and empathy, but his desire to kill is natural to him, he even sees his empathy as a tool to manipulate people, not even once he steps out of his plans because of his empathy, that's the kind of man that he really is.
