Hay Ealan, just wanted to thank you for taking the time to shoot this vid. I took receipt of the Denon A-110 roughly 8 weeks back. I had been having issues attempting to properly set up the 7.1.6 After watching your video, I now understand the required path to take to tell the amp I wanna use two mono blocks for my main L/R fronts. After weeks of pulling my hair out (and there is not much of that left at my age) I finally get it. The A-110 is a full onboard 13.2 capable AVR but my main fronts are rated at 300W and the Denon can only reach half that, so I picked up a set of QUAD mono's with a max out of 500W. Finally I get to appreciate the capabilities of the B&W's I own. Thanks again. Yours Kevin from Glasgow/Scotland/UK
Kevin, it’s moments like these that make my efforts worth while with this channel. I’m so glad that I could help clear up any confusion. I had to get help myself at first, so I thought I’d pay it forward and explain what was explained to me. Thanks again for your compliments. Seems like everyone who has taken the time to comment from across the pond has been so kind. Cheers. 🙌
This is absolutely the best helpful informative and straightforward hi-fi instructions for the average and more advanced guy Coming in a step-by-step digestible package. Kudos to you!
@@ealanosborne awesome content!! Do you have a video explaining how to connect my floor stage(5 spkrs) to external amps and have my 4 height atmos speakers be powered by the Denon? Not sure if this is possible. I might need to get another external amp because of the “all or nothing” “pre amp” mode where the Denon only processes the channels. Thank you in advance for your response. I’ve been having so much trouble looking for a video explaining how to do it
@@raymondayala5355 Yeah, man! Choose 11.1 Amp Assign, assign the front L/R for the pre out, and then your center and surrounds pre outs will just be “on,” ready to have their signals sent to an external amp. Then the AVR’s internal amps will power the heights. 🤘
Thanks! I'm 62 and never had a fancy receiver until I recently bought a Denon X2800H 7.2 (half price btw). Didn't have a clue how to set it up. Clear directions even I could follow. You da man!
Ealan, I never comment on TH-cam videos, but this video was so insanely useful that I just had to post a thank you. IMHO, this is actually useful for TWO sets of people: *Folks looking to configure a complex home theater system with one of the newer receivers *Folks trying to decide which mid-high end AV receiver to buy who are concerned about how the signals are routed if they do not have enough amplified channels on the receiver Well done, and by the way, you probably saved me $500+ because I now know how I can get away with a 9 channel receiver even though I plan on powering 11 channels (I have external amps, but wasn't sure how it would let me configure them). Awesome video.
Martin, thanks so much! Your kind words keep me motivated to continue helping those out there getting into home theater! The film industry has changed, so we all deserve a dope audio experience when being entertained at home! 😄🤘
Ealan, I have an 8500 HA Denon with 10 in ceiling speakers. I have my LCR driven by a 3 channel bryston. Can’t seem to set it up properly. Could you do a video please. Thank you. Great videos!
This helped me a lot I originally set up my Klipsch 5.0.2 system with my Denon 760 H AVR but I set the front Dolby up firing speakers accidentally to high wall mounted Dolby speakers. So I couldn’t really hear them cleanly. Now it’s way better and I put some extra db on the center channel and it’s way better.
Hey Ealan, most informative video I have come across as far as speaker setup for the Denon receiver. I have recently ordered the DENON AVR S760H to replace my current receiver in my home theatre, though I cannot figure out what would be the best speaker configuration to go with in settings. My speakers are installed as follows in my theatre: 1 Sub 1 Center Front in wall speakers Mid Ceiling in wall speakers Rear in wall speakers Two option dilemma: Option 1: Set ceiling speakers as the Surround Speakers L/R and set the rear speakers as Surround Back L/R Option 2: Set ceiling speakers as Top Middle L/R and set rear speakers as Surround Speakers L/R I have been racking my head on this and your video is the closest and best I have found to solving this dilemma. Thanks and keep up the great work! Subscribed!
Ealan, thanks so much for your content, you’ve accelerated my learning curve dramatically. Could you do a video on fine tuning the audio adjustments of the denon, MultiEQ, surround modes, parameters, etc.?
" that was my cat " could have fooled me , I turned around and thought " How did my cat get back inside? ". Great video, I have a Denon AVR-3700 and I never thought to go back and check the settings after running Audyssey, I am so glad I did . :)
Wow this is the exact setup I am upgrading to! The Denon and the Emotiva for my front and center speakers which are Paradigm Studio 100's. You probably saved me hours of configuration setup! This is one of the best videos explaining why to select small speakers so you adjust the crossovers. Great explanation on setting up all the speakers. Thanks Again.
@@ealanosborne I have a question that I could not find in your other videos. I have an apple tv 4k and a Roku Ultra box. I have a projector that does Not support ARC or EARC. I have upgraded my HDMI cables to 2.1. I plan on purchasing the Denon which supports EARC. Can I get Dolby Atmos and other Lossless audio from my streaming boxes without having an EARC connection on my projector?
@@lordwalthour3229 As long as you’re plugging your streaming devices directly into the Denon, ARC or eARC won’t matter, since you’re basically using your projector only for picture, not sound. 👍
Thanks Again Ealan! I thought that might be the case I just could not find any info anywhere on how it works. So in other words the apple tv has the decoding build into the box and all the HDMI inputs on the denon will decode them straight from the apple tv or roku. Thanks!
Amp assignment is a must prior to Audyssey, but there is no need to set the crosovers, speaker size prior because Audyssey will take care of all that. The changes happen manually after running Audyssey if needed.
The best Atmos effects are when you mount speakers up high or on the ceiling. But they don’t have to labeled as “Atmos” speakers to be used as an Atmos speaker. A speaker is a speaker, so you can use any passive speaker, really. 👍
I have an Onkyo tx-sr494 and this video helped me so much in properly setting the receiver up for atmos huge thumbs up, My system now sounds amazing with movies and music. On another note, so glad I don't live in an apartment so I'm able to truly enjoy window shaking movies.
Mission accomplished. The external amp is working (LCR channels). Later I'll check to see if those (3) internal amps are truly turned off. But for now, I'm overjoyed knowing the 3-channel ext. amp is in line, getting a signal and working. Did a quick pink noise test and while the LCR remained at the same volume level, I was able to lower the gain on about 5 of the remaining 8 channels a bit and still reach my target decibel level at the main listening area. That suggests more power is being distributed to those channels from the AVR. Based on that point alone, there has been an improvement. (Tears of happiness 😊). Thanks again for your response Ealan!
James, I have the same speaker/amp assign setup issue with my Denon AVR-X8500H with a 5 channel external amp. You say that you solved the config issue. Are you able to post the successful settings that you used? Did you the custom setting?
@Ian Taylor Yes, I used the custom setting (Assign Mode). My apologies for the slow response, but to be honest, I forgot to check the settings yesterday. I took a couple of photos of the settings if you think that would be helpful. (But, I would need an email to send them to.) The only issue I've had so far is that I've picked up a slight humm whit the external 3 channel amp in line. The humm is only in the LCR speakers. So now I need a ground wire between my receiver and the smp. Otherwise I'm still very pleased with everything.
@@jamesmiller2317 I have since tried the custom setting (Assign Mode) and set Front, Centre, Surround in the Speaker column to "None". This was automatically selected. (This covers the 5 channel external amp: Emotiva BasX A5), then Surround Back to "Surround Back", as per the terminal connection; Height 1 and Height 2 to "Front Dolby" and "Rear Dolby" respectively. This seems to work well. I don't get any hum in the speakers with this config. Is this a similar setup to what you have and have you solved the hum issue?
@Ian Taylor Yes, that is the same custom settings I used. The only exception of course is "Surround" as I only have a (3) channel external amp (OSD Nero XA3200), not a (5) channel. To hear the humm, I have to literally place my ear a few inches from the tweeter/ horn. I tried using different electrical outlets at first, but the humm only went away with the ground wire (problem solved). Otherwise, I'm very satisfied with the quality and sound of the amp. To me, it definitely made an improvement and I'm glad I made the change. I'm hopeful you'll experience a noticeable difference and are satisfied with the added amp.
Thank you sir for this video! This is the best explanation on how to setup and configure speakers ever. The small speakers configuration is priceless, people still complain why they have no bass in their system need to watch this video about crossovers . I bet a ton of people still configure large and have no bass! Thank you so much👍
Hi Ealan, I have 2 klipsch - R-625FA Tower Speakers, 2 klipsch rp-502s for surround back, 2 R-41M Bookshelf Speakers for surround, 2 klipsch subwoofer R-12SW, center channel klipsch R-34C, two in ceiling Speakers Klipsch CDT-5800-C II my receiver is the denon 3700, I don't know why the rear surround speakers don't do any sound when is in dolby atmos mode, it only sound when is in multi channel mode, appear assigned and make sound when I do the test sound, what do you think I'm doing wrong? Thanks so much.
Hmmmm...1) double check that your Denon has 5 + SB selected for your floor speakers in Amp Assign 2) double check that in Speaker Config page the surround backs are engaged and 3) make sure your source (Blu-ray player or streaming player) is set to bitstream audio out and not PCM. That's where I'd start. Not sure beyond that...
Youre awesome mr Osbourne. I am trying to figure out how to do the amp assign on my denon 6700 and I searched youtube and saw your video. Very detailed explaination coming from you even, better than Denon technical help themselves, and I understood how to it up. You dont sound like a broken record at all because I would have rewind and listen to you explain it again anyway. Thanks again Mr. Orbourne. Tri Pham from San Jose, CA
Hi Elan. I’m planning to build my home theater. I will be using 4 elac b62.0 for front and back and elac center speaker. I will also be using 4 ceiling speakers. And 1 subwoofer. I don’t have a receiver yet. I am mulling between Pioneer Lx505 and Denon Rz50. Can you give me advise on choosing the receiver? Thanks
I am just getting into dolby world. After watching bunch of videos, i found you sir the most to the point and easy to understand. Kindly help me to manually calibrate 5.1.2 with my denon avr x2500. I dont have audyssey microphone.
Hi great video question please if you don’t mind. I just finished setting up my home theater and I’m first running a Sony A90J 65 inch OLED, my question is I’m using a Denon 3700h receiver with two Klipsch RP-800F’S front speakers and two R-41sa’s as the height speakers which are mounted to the wall on each side of the tv cause I didn’t like when you place them on top of the floor speakers and aim it at the ceiling to get the overhead affect. I also have two Klipsch RP-600m bookshelf speakers on stands as the rear and I’m using the tv as the center channel until I get dedicated center speaker, there is a 10 inch woofer as well. Now the entire setup uses hard wired connections and I just bought two Denon 150 home wireless speakers and I would like to use them as rear height speakers to make it a 7.1 but so far I’m not seeing a way in the Denon setup to add two wireless speakers it only gives options for connecting more wired speakers. So is it possible to do this? Thank you so much
Ah…looking at the specs online, it looks like the 150 wireless speakers aren’t designed to be integrated into a traditional wired home theater system. It can be a part of a whole house audio system for music streaming through HEOS technology, but that’s not the same. And the 150’s can be used as rear surrounds for the DHT-S716H sound bar, but not in a wired system. Just runs off different technology. Would be pretty awesome if it could be used within a traditional home theater, but the technology just isn’t there…yet? 🤷♂️
How to extend and setup proper Dolby setup of 24.1.10 without using high end preamps like Trinnov Altitude³² or Altitude Ext 48 and flagship avr, amps etc.,
Thanks for this I have a 5.1 system I have JBL 590 x2 JBL 580x2 and the JBL 520c ill be adding 4 top speakers soon what amp should i get to power the JBL speakers. looking at the 2 to 5 channel Emotiva amp which one should work out. I have A Denon x4300h
I’d maybe start with a BasX A5 to power your ear level speakers, since those require the most juice when it comes to power management. Then the Denon’s amps could power the heights just fine (when you decide to get those) since they don’t draw as much power, being used more for atmospheric sounds usually. 👍
@@ealanosborne Thanks for that im probably not listening to the speakers as they were meant to be because of under power. i will get a 5ch amp looking at the one you recommended BasX A5.
Been having this Denon - AVR-X4700H for about 3 months and I just got my 9060 Def tech home theater system almost done just added 2 rear sound speakers deftech 800 just missing my atmos ceiling firing speakers this video will help me fix my setup sounding awesome it would've taken me days to figure it out on my own
Great video! I have one question, which I think you covered. Just want to be sure I got it right. 7.1.4 with the front L&R and center powered by a BasX A3 11.2 5ch & SB Front Pre-outs for front L&R and center connected to the BasX A3
Let me join all others who have said it before me, thank you for this informative video. I recently bought an SR8015 (crazy liquidation prices) and found the speaker settings confusing as I have an EMOTIVA XPA-3 Gen 3 to drive my front L/C/R speakers and use the Marantz for the rest. I wanted to assign my front L & R to the pre outs. I couldn’t figure how to do it! I have a 5.1.4 system with my 4 height speakers installed in ceiling in a TF & TM configuration. TM because the middle heights are right above our heads. The only way I could figure out to set the in ceiling above our heads as TM was to set the front in ceiling as Front Heights (instead of Top Front). Setting the front height as TF only allows TR for the in ceiling above our heads. My question… will there be a significant difference in sound using FH & TM vs TF & TR in my settings? FYI, the Marantz SR8015 replaces a Sony STR-AZ5000ES which suffered from an annoying hiss when using 360SSM. Sadly as Sony has the lead when it comes to acoustic processing. But the Marantz has a warmer sweeter sound which I really love.
FH vs TF etc won’t affect the sound itself for better or worse. It’s more of a placeholder or preliminary setting. The more important factor is running Audyssey room correction, because that will get the timing and levels right, no matter where the speakers happen to be. Also to note, Auro 3D setups aren’t supported when you choose “top front” or “top rear.” But it will be supported when you choose “front height” and “rear height.” Not sure if you care about Auro 3D, but just thought I’d mention that too. 😁
Thanks for the detailed video. I am trying to setup my brand new Denon AVR-X3700H with a 5.1.4 configuration. I have 3 speakers in the front (plus subwoofer). I have 4 in ceiling speakers and two surround back speakers. The setup will not allow me to specify only the surround back without the side surround speakers. Does anyone know how to get this configuration defined? I used the 9.1 assign mode. There is no space in my room for side surround speakers.
There’s no way to specify a 5.1.4 with surround backs. If you happen to have your surrounds behind you in a 5.1.4 configuration, they would still be considered surrounds since you don’t have 7 ear-level speakers. It’s just a matter of labeling and identifying speakers. But in the software, you would still just use 5 floor speakers in the amp assign section, and in speaker Config you would still have 2 surrounds, and “none” for surround backs, even though they are physically in the surround back position. Make sense? 😀
@@ealanosborne Thank you for the quick response. That makes perfect sense, and I was able to define all my speakers. I am moving from a 5.1 system with some new speakers and this new Denon receiver. I would have been lost without your help.
I will Upgrade to 5.2.6 these days . On my Marantz Cinema 50 i have to take the surr back for the top middle? The Fronts will go into Marantz mm7025 amp then.
Thanks man, nailed it with this one! Im no newbie when it comes to this stuff, but those Denon amp assign settings are definitely confusing... this really helps!
Hi Elan. Great video, thanks a million. I have a Denon X3700H and a 7.4.2 configuration, ie. 2 front towers, 1 center, 2 surrounds and 2 surround backs, two subwoofers, and 4 ceiling speakers. I need an external amplifier to fire up my height 2 speakers. But I have an old Sony STR-DN1060 that works perfectly. Can I use the additional av receiver as my external amplifier? If so, how can I make cable connections?
Hi! Thanks for the kind words! 🤘 To answer your question, no, unfortunately. You would need a higher end AVR that is equipped with a 7.1 multi-channel input section (typically used with SACD or high end Blu-ray players that might have a better DAC than your AVR). Otherwise, you would need to get a good ol’ fashioned external amp. Emotiva BasX amps are a great value, OSD and Outlaw Audio too.
Amazing video very good explanation.i have a denon avr-x2700h and 5.1.2 ley out with top front sealing speakers my tv is lg nanocel but when I am in Netflix is not showing atmos when I am using the avr only dolby vision.without the avr the TV plays atmos cos it's support it but with the avr is not is anything that I have to check my hdmi is good guality up to 8k but not sure where is the problem.thank you
Thanks for putting this guide together…actually, all your videos are pretty handy as I’m just starting out! If I’ve got this correct, I need to reconfigure my speaker settings. I have a 5.1.2 setup. I’m using a pair of SVS prime elevation for rears mounted horizontally on the side wall (thanks for the SVS PE video for that tip!) and I have a pair of Dali C1’s mounted at ceiling level next to seating position as Atmos heights. But I think I now need to change the confit because on the setup screen it shows them as upfiring on top of the rears? I think you’re suggesting these need to be changed to top/ceiling. Right?!? 🤔
Hi Eallan. This is the video I've been looking for...thanks! I have the Denon AVR-X8500H and a 7.1.4 setup in my theater. I have purchased a 3-channel external amp that I want to add for my LCR channels. I've been through every Speaker/Amp Assign option and I can't find any setting showing a "Pre-Out" option for the left and right main. And none of the "View Terminal Config." diagrams show the left / right front connections highlighted in the "Pre Out" section Am I to assume pre-out is always there/on for the LCR channels? This is frustrating, it's my second day trying to figure this out (and I can't find the hard copy manual, to see if it would help) Any suggestions?
Yes, in theory, the pre outs should just always be “on” when you connect an RCA cable to it, since you are interrupting the audio signal before it hits the internal amp. Have you tried the Custom amp assign mode? I wonder if that could help with assigning the fronts to be powered by an external amp? I wish I was more familiar with that beast of an AVR, but it’s definitely more customizable than its less expensive counterparts.
Wow, that made my brain hurt and i am only half way through the tutorial ...... very good indeed, can i quickly ask a question, i have speakers for a 5.1.4, but my 4 atmos speakers are in-ceiling and i have two between my listening position and the tv and i have the other two directly above my listening position, with then two rear surrounds behind me....... when you have shown the set up it appears i need to set the height speakers at Top Front, Top Middle...... but i could not see that configuration ? Just Top front/Top rear....... have i missed something ?
No, you’re not missing anything. Typically you’ll only use “top middle” if you have only 2 ceiling speakers you’re dealing with. Or if your AVR can support 6 height channels. Otherwise - regardless of placement - 4 ceiling speakers would still be considered top front and top rear. Although there is “SHL” and SHR” in the software for side-mounted height speakers, which you could experiment with. But my guess is it won’t make much of a difference, since in the end, running Audyssey will account for how far away the speakers are from the main listening position anyway. 🤘
@@ealanosborne Excellent, thank you for the quick reply. I will be buying the 4700H in the next few days so that saves a lot of confusion, along with the 4 height speakers i have two rear surrounds which are behind me but above me at height..... but not in the ceiling or as high, they are simply standard rear surrounds which you would find in a normal 5.1 system but i have an open plan lounge/kitchen/diner which is big enough to fit all this in so it's an unusual room in terms of acoustics and layout. Thanks again.
So Gene at Audioholics is telling me the Denon amp has the ability to turn OFF the internal amplification, but in your example the Denon amp is still on!? I only have the ability to turn off software, not the hardware. Am I rerouting the internal power? So........... separates is the only way I can eliminate all internal amplification from the AVR? Correct? You said it yourself, bypass. Not turn it off. So the AVR is still doing all the amplification, it's just not hooked up & driving the speakers. What am I accomplishing?
Yes, with the 2020 and newer models, there is “preamp” mode, which shuts off all internal amps, if you happen to power all your speakers externally. Otherwise - say if you’re using a 3-channel amp to power your front soundstage - any signal that doesn’t reach the internal amp (because it’s going out the pre out first) doesn’t activate its corresponding internal amp.
I have a Marantz 6011 and just got the basx a7. With a 7.1.4 setup.. this is the exact video I’ve been looking for!! Thank you!!!!! I can’t wait till I am able to hook everything up
Hi EalanI got the 3700 Denon and I am adding the Basx a3 to power the front stage. My configureation is 5.2.2 for now but be adding 2 more in ceiling speakers. So how can I connect the power amp to use the preouts of the avr I saw your video and only the right and left channels are greyed out What about the center channel how does it uses the preout to the power amp. Thanks and very useful videos.👍
The center channel doesn’t gray out. It’s just automatically ready for a signal if you happen to plug in an RCA cable into its pre out. Just the front L/R or Rear Height need to be actually assigned if you’re using a combo of internal and external amps. 👍
Great video, wish I had seen it sooner. I currently just completed installing 4 height speakers for a 7.1.4 system using the X4700H Denon Receiver and I didn't realize I needed a seperate amp for the height 2 speakers. My question is can I use another receiver, specifically a Denon AVR-1613, for the height 2 speakers? Thanks
@@ealanosborne ok thanks for replying, I was hoping I could use the Cable audio inputs and front left and right stereo speaker outputs as the height 2 channel. well I guess I need to do some shopping.
Hello Ealan, thank you very much for using your time and effort in making this video it's very helpful and informative but here's my question, I gave a denon x4700 h and an emotiva basx a5 I am considering a 5.2.4 and if I can I would like to add 2 back/rear speakers behind my seating position L/R is this possible with the equipment I have? I intended to power the front lcr and rear surround using the emotiva a5, is this possible please? Oh and my height speakers are nothing fancy or mega expensive they are sony surround sound speakers. Will this work? Huge thanks again for your time. Peter
That’s definitely possible. And at the start, don’t worry about which speakers your using for height channels, as long as it sounds good to you. 😃 As long as you use the 11.1 software assignment, set Floor to 5CH + SB, and set the Pre Out to Front, you can power your 5 bed layer speakers with the A5, and power the rest of your speakers with the internal amps of your x4700h. 👍
Awesome video!!! Definitely helped me a lot with at least understanding the software. I recently have built/bought a home theatre system 5.1.1!!! I use a Denon X6700h 2 Klipsch RP-8000 towers front speaker 1 Klipsch RP-504c II center channel 1 Klipsch 12 inch sub And 2 RP-600 Surround Speakers I was following your steps and process to set up my system. However my denon does not have a "9.1ch" option. The only 9.1 options all have "SB" or "FB" in the title of the options. I do have a "11.1ch" but it doesnt make sense to select that option. Wondering if you could shed some light on this please and thank you!
@@TheAheer Basically with the X6700H, you can get to the same result with a 5.1 system starting from several different points. Amp Assign Mode 9.1, 11.1, or 13.1 I believe all work, you just need to select "5ch" for your "Floor" and that's it, since you don't have any heights or surround backs, etc. Then back in the "Speaker Config" page, just make sure you have selected front speakers, a center speaker, a subwoofer, and 2 surround speakers. That should do it.
Great video! This will save me a lot of time when I set up my 7.2.4 system. Just curious, how did you come up to speed on setting up yourAVR? Did you do research online or follow a manual?
Outstanding and informational how to. I am still confused about hooking up my Denon 3600H with my 7.2.2 setup (have 2 wall mounted height speakers). I want to power my front stage using three of the five Outlaw 5000's amps. Please help me. Thanks
It should be the same, if I’m not mistaken. 11.1 Amp Assign Mode. Floor: 5 ch & SB Height Sp: 2 ch Pre out: Front Also make sure Speaker Config page is correctly set to 7.2.2. Only the front L/R pre outs need to be assigned. The center channel will just be “on” and ready for an RCA cable to be plugged into it, going to your Outlaw 5000
@@ealanosborne Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I had already tried earlier what you suggested but Height sp 2 channel gave me NO Pre-out: Front. If I chose Height sp 4 channel, Denon software gave me the option to keep Pre-out: Front. I only have 2 Height speakers not 4. Any additional thoughts on this dilemma? Thank you once again for your time and effort in trying to help me.
@@gregoryotoole41 Oh, right. Gotcha. Yeah, it’s a weird little quirk with Denon AVRs (at least from a few years ago). You still need to choose 4 height speakers to engage the pre outs, yes. But then back out of the amp assign, go to Speaker Config and select only 2 Front height speakers. So that way the AVR knows it only needs to send a signal to 2 heights instead of 4. Techno Dad also broke this down a few years ago in this video… 👇👇 th-cam.com/video/O22emNvdvLg/w-d-xo.html
@@gregoryotoole41 From what I’ve seen with Techno Dad’s breakdown of the x3800h, it’s not so weird anymore. Denon has improved the user interface so that’s it’s easier and more intuitive to perform customizations, thank goodness. 😄
Hi, Great video that answered my question. If I am assembling my amplifier from a local seller, Will I be having an option to use this interface in a manual assembling setup from my local seller? If yes, How do I specify my requirement to him?
Hi Ealan, my 71 yr old brain just isn't completely getting the Amp Assign on my Denon s750H. i have it set up as 5.1.2 and have Klipsch R-41sm's Dolby Enabled speakers mounted 7 -8ft up the front wall. I do not use them as upfiring, don't like them that way. They are hooked to the surround back posts on the Denon. I am a bit confused as to whether i should set the "Amp Assign" to "front height" or "front dolby". What would the difference be? Thanks
Hi! Yes, you should assign them to “front height” since you have them mounted up on the wall. “Front Dolby” is when they are bouncing audio off the ceiling, which you don’t like. 👍
Not sure the 7.2.4 configuration I want to setup was completely covered. I’m buying the MarantzCinema 50 or Denon 4800 and interested in using the Emotiva BasX A7 to power the 7 surround (bed) speakers. I would like to use the integral amplifiers for the 4 ceiling Dolby Atmos speakers and a pair of 2nd zone patio speakers. Is this configuration possible?
I think it is possible, although I believe the only caveat is 7.2.4 takes up all its processing power, so you wouldn’t be able to watch a movie AND listen to something in Zone 2 simultaneously. But that’s probably not going to be an issue for most. But yes, you can connect an A7 to power your bed layer speakers, and use the internal amps for your heights. It would be the 11.1 amp assign mode, 5 Ch + SB, 4 heights, and assign the front L/R to be powered externally (via pre outs).
do i need to have Dolby atmos speakers to be able to play Dolby atmos via airplay? My music center is a Denon AVR x3700h. It supports movies with dolby atmos. I use Tidal directly from my Iphone 13 pro max, or through the HEOS app. In both cases my AVR does not recognize music with dolby atmos. HEOS cannot play it at all.
I believe HEOS does not support Atmos music, and only a Tidal HiFi Plus Account supports Atmos Music. Although it may only work with a wired connection, either plugging the phone directly into your AVR or through a streamer, like an AppleTV 4K. 🤷♂️
Very helpful video. Thank you! I'm new to the home theater game. I just bought 7.2 Denon AVR but would like to add couple more channels to it. I can purchase a 9.2 AVR but the cost jump very high from 7.2 to 9.2 AVRs. any recommendations on how I can add 2 channels in a cost effective manner? thank you.
No, sorry. 7 channel AVRs can only process 7 channels of audio (and up to 2 subwoofers). It’s only once you upgrade to the 9 channel tier that you’ll find AVRs that contain 9 internal amps, but can process a total of 11 channels with the help of an external amp (like the Denon X3700H). Not sure why manufacturers decided to do that to 7 channel AVRs, but that’s the way it is. 🤷♂️
Hi. Great video. I just bought the Denon AVRX4700H. In the manual I don't see a connection configuration that will represent the speakers I have to connect to it. There will 5 floor speakers (FR, FL, C, SR, SL) plus 2 Dolby enabled FHR, FHL (assume connect to Height 1) but I also want to Bi-Amp the Front Klipsch 8060's, and would like to use the Height 2 connections for that. The manual shows a 7.1 channel:Bi-Amp Connection of Front Speakers in the manual, but in that configuration they show an SBR and SBL which I do not have. Is there a way to fix that with the Speaker Config. settings? Or when I hook all the speaker wires and run Audyssey, will it figure out the correct configuration to ASSIGN? Thank you in advance for any replies.
If I have it correct, you’re wanting to set up a 5.x.2 system, right? The software only allows for Bi-amping using the SBR and SBL speaker terminals, which is great, since you aren’t using surround back speakers at all. So you would connect the hi frequencies of your 8060’s to the front L/R speaker terminals, then connect the low frequencies to the SBR/SBL terminals. 🙌 Make sense?
Hello Ealan, I am seeking for experience of 5.1.4 setup like shown at 08:10, "2 Front Height + 2 Top Middle". Unfortunately I am unable to put anything behind the MLP due to the skew attic ceiling of the roof. The 2 Top Middle is slightly in front (~50 cm) of my MLP, and the 2 Front Height is a no brainer above my fronts. The ceiling is 268 cm heigh. Is it worth it for Atmos, or should I stick to only 5.1.2 (with 2 Top Middle)?
I think you would still be able to get a sense of movement with some Atmos height effects even if your top middle heights are slightly in front of your MLP. So that way you still have a sense of audio from above (with top middle) and the illusion that your TV is huge with front heights. 😊
Denon Atmos Setup Guide is great! Thank you Ealan so much. Now, I would like to connect my Denon AVR-X4500H both to Emotiva BasX A3 and Emotiva XPA Two Gen3. As I have eleven speakers (2 front, 1 center, 2 surround, 4 dolby atmos, 2 high), the assign mode would be 11.1 ch. Emotiva XPA Two Gen 3 would support 2 fronts and Emotiva BasX A3 would support 1 center and 2 surrounds. Would you be so kind and tell me how all setups and connections should look like? Thank! Krzysztof
In amp assign, Floor should be set to 5 Ch + SB to activate the preout assignment. Choose 4 height channels (and choose either "front" or "top", depending on if you have mounted or in-ceiling speakers) and choose Front for the preout assignment. Go back to the Speaker Config page and make sure the diagram looks like your setup. The physical RCA cable connections is pretty simple - just plug in to Front Left, Front Right and connect those to your XPA Two amp. Center, Surround Left, and Surround Right preouts get connected to the BasX A3. And that should do it! The only preouts you have to assign are Front Left and Front Right. Center, Surround Left, and Surround Right don't need to be assigned, they're just ready for a signal if an RCA cable is connected to its corresponding preout.
Having just picked up my AVC-X3700h, this video is brilliant to setup my amp. I am getting slightly confused with the crossover in my system. The speakers and info from the manuals are... Fronts B&W LM1 - 65Hz to 22 Hz Crossover - 3.5Hz Centre B&W LCR600 S3 - 48Hz to 42Hz Crossover - 300Hz, 4kHz Surrounds B&W VM1 - 65Hz to 22 Hz Crossover - 3.5Hz Are these crossover settings correct??? Thanks Stephen
Oh! I can see how that might be confusing. The crossovers you listed are within the speaker itself, so that’s the frequency at which it splits between high and low frequencies regarding the speaker’s own tweeter and woofer. A crossover in a home theater system has to with where the speakers’ frequency output ends, and where the subwoofer takes over. So with your LM1 speakers working with the X3700H, for example, I’d set the crossover to 80 Hz, since you want to be about 10-20 Hz above their lowest frequency output (which is 65 Hz). Make sense? 😀👍
Good morning Elan, you have done great job breaking down each configuration. I purchased the Denon 6700H 2 weeks ago and my question that I have for you with my 7.2.4 setup. I'm using the 11.1 setup but for some reason I can't get sound from my front & rear ceiling speakers nor from my surround back wall speakers but when I ran the Test tone I heard sound coming through all of the speakers. I haven't ran Audessy yet, should I or is there some other issue. I'm running HDMI ARC from my to the receiver... HELP !!!
Well, only the new x3800h/x4800h/Cinema 50 can do 6 height channels. Otherwise, yes - when using a combination of internal and external amps, only the front L/R or Rear Heights can be assigned. You can still use external amps for all the other speakers - center, surrounds, surround backs, front heights. It’s just a software limitation when dealing with front speakers or rear heights. Lastly, depending on if you have a 2020 or newer AVR, preamp mode will disable all internal amps and you can power all speakers with external amps (if you have enough).
Hello, thanks for the video. If we are talking about the Denon AVC-X3700H specifically. Are you sure that when you are connecting 5 channel amplifier, the AVR disconnects the internal AMPs for the corresponding connections? Because the Manual states that they are disconnected and turned off ONLY if you choose the Amp Assign to full Pre Amp. Can you be wrong here? Just trying to fully understand if I can connect 5 channel amp to power my bed layer and use AVR's amps to power the SBs and 4 Height Channels. Thanks.
If I have. 5.1.4 system with surround back and no side surrounds speakers, will I be able to power all my speakers? Do I loose 2 channels by having to setup 7 bed layer speakers and then turn of the side surrounds? Great Video!
Hi. Great Video. Super Helpful. I just got a Denon AVR-4700H in a 7.2 setup with Klipsch speakers and an Emotive BasX A7. Im in the process of wiring 4 Klipsch in ceiling speakers. I will like to have the Emotiva BasX A7 to power my Front and Center speakers and my 4 in ceiling speakers. Is it possible to get this configuration? Following you video, I noticed in the Denon setup that you can only select to power either the front or the ceiling speaker but not both.
Hey thanks for the compliment! And yes, that is a software limitation of the X4700H, either assigning the front 2 speakers OR rear height speakers to be powered externally. I honestly wish you COULD mix and match to your heart’s content, but no. Although if it’s in your budget to get a BasX A4 as well, then you could put it in Preamp mode and power all speakers externally. But until you can do that, I would power all your bed layer speakers with the A7 anyway and let the Denon power the height channels. Depending on the content, the height channels will most likely be activated only sporadically and more subtly. So having your 7 bed layer speakers externally amped is a better way to go in the meantime. 👍
I know this stream is a little older. I just purchased a Denon AVR 1700 H. I was wondering if you had a video or if you could tell me if mine was able to do a 5.2.2 set up? Or a 5.2.4?
So I took your advice and picked up the Denon AVR-X4700H and an external amp but I only have one question I have 4 Klipsch R625FA’s, a pair of Klipsch R41M’s and A R52C center channel. I’m trying to do a 7.2.4 set up but I’m not sure if I should put the R41M’s as surrounds or Back Surrounds and then I’d put a pair of the R625FA’s in either the surround spot or back surround spot depending on where I put the R41M’s
My knee jerk reaction would be to put the R-41ms as the surround backs, since they’ll probably not be active as often (or not as loud at times) as the surrounds. But I’d experiment with the 2 scenarios, too (if it’s not too much of a hassle moving the speakers around). 👍
Thanks mate, I been looking for a video like this for a while now. Planning to do either a 5.2.4 or 7.2.4 set up. I have a room that's 4mx4m that I am planning to set up my home theatre but still undecided which speaker config is best for this room size. Keen to hear your thoughts?
Question 5.1.4 or 7.1.4 configuration (external 4 amps for atmos speakers) But the goal is to bi-amp fronts. is it possible? What would be the setting pattern and could audessey handle it?
Technically yes, but it’s tricky. You’ll still use an 11.1 configuration in Amp Assign, but coming out of the Front Left and Front Right pre outs you would need to use an RCA splitter. So you don’t actually tell the receiver to bi-amp, but you still bi-amp with the external amp. I’ve linked a video from Techno Dad below which explains how to use this RCA splitter configuration. As far as Audyssey, that’s a great question I don’t have an answer for. But if you do follow through with bi-amping using an external amp, I’d still run Audyssey as usual, just to see if it still works like normal. th-cam.com/video/fPrGqu-_7VE/w-d-xo.html
I was planning on buying the Costco 5.0.2 Klipsch Dolby Atmos set and then adding additional 4 ceiling speakers. Will the Denon amp speaker config tool allow me to take that into consideration (having upfiring speakers AND ceiling speakers)?
Yes. The software does distinguish between the two. “Top or rear/front height represents mounted or in-ceiling, while “Dolby speaker” represents upward firing. 👍
Ealan, outstanding video! If I want 7.1.4 and go with the x6700h, is there any reason to set up an external amp at this point? Today I have 7.1 and purchasing the x6700h to get me to 4 ceiling Atmos set up. I guess I'm not sure how to take into account the watt specs of my speakers to determine when to get a 2 or 3 channel external amp.
Thanks for the kind words! Well, it’s just a step in the evolution of your home theater, really. Since the x6700h has a rating of 140 watts per channel (2 channels driven), so probably more like 90 watts per channel when everything is working simultaneously. So if you have speakers that work best around 100-125 watts per channel, using the internal amps should be fine for awhile. But it does make a difference to start with the front three speakers (left, center, right) being powered externally. It allows the Denon to process audio better when there are less speakers to power on its own. More details come out, dynamics are more dramatic (loud parts are louder, quiet parts are more intelligible), etc. But honestly, it’s not exactly worth it until you get more expensive speakers that need more power to really come alive. Like speakers that can handle 150-300 watts (or more!). Then you can get some external amps that can supply that kind of power to really let the speakers sing! Make sense? 😁
Very informative explanation! Thank you. I have one issue with my Denon AVR 4500. I Have set up to 5.2.4 (Atmos) everything works fine but I can't get sound from the front right and front left speakers. Any clue what I should look at? Thanks
Hmmm…I’d start with the Amp Assign page, choosing 9.1 to ensure you’re not accidentally assigning a preamp to the front left and right. Then go to the Speaker Config page and make sure the front left and right show 2 active speakers. 🤷♂️ Hopefully that helps! 🤞
@@ealanosborne thanks a lot! I do appreciate your help. You are right... Somehow found that both speakers are assigned to preamp..now I need to find how to return it to normal. Thanks
is their any scenario where any other connections on the back of the pre amp are highlighted or just the front speakers and/or height speakers in the software on my Denon AVR x3600h. Thank you this video helped a whole lot.
Just the front and rear heights need to be assigned if you’re using a combo of internal and external amps. Otherwise, all the other pre outs are “standing by” if you want to connect an external amp to those as well.
Right ho. Here's one for you. I'm going to use the zone 2 outputs to my Audiolab 6000A stereo amp (which can be run as a power amp) and this will drive the front speakers and subwoofer. Is there a configuration that allows me to run the Audessy sound setup with this ?
My config is slightly different, two front in-walls, two front ceiling, two rear ceiling, center and 1 sub. 2020 Denon 7.2 amp. Would you mind commenting on that setup. Thanks.
Hey again, i have a denon 2300w receiver and a panasonic 820 4k player and a samsung 900b. What is the best way to connect all three to get lossless audio through my speakers, i know the 820 has two hdmi outputs one is audio and one is video , would i connect hdmi audio out to receiver and the hdmi video out straight to tv or would i use the passthough on the receiver with one hdmi cable to receiver, or is there another way. Any help would be great. Thanks again...Phil
Well, it looks like the 2300w doesn’t support eARC, so you wouldn’t be getting a true Atmos audio signal (via Dolby True HD) if you had the Panasonic 820 connected to your TV. But as long as the 820 is connected directly to the 2300w, it definitely supports true Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio, it has a great digital to analog converter, 4K video pass-through and supports lossless and hi-res music formats. So that’s your best bet. 👍
Great video. Question for you. I have the AVR-X6700H setup as 11.1 (7.4.4). However, I just got a 2 channel amp that I would like to use to power the left/right back surround speakers. What do I need to do in the Amp Assign and speaker config screens to make it work? Thanks.
Hmmm…I think you might be out of luck here, just because of software limitations. As soon as you select the 11.1 Amp Assign (which you need to do since you’re running 7.x.4), it automatically assumes you want to power Front L/R or Rear Heights with that external amp. 😬 The only way to externally power Surround Backs is if you ALSO power either Front L/R or Rear Heights
I just bought the Denon AVR591 first AVR after years of using HTIB setups and the back panel has the regular 5 speaker banana plugs ports and just above the subwoofer preout there are rca connectors one red and one white labeled for surround back/front height now do I connect those I tried using red and white RCA cables from the Denon and into an old Kenwood stereo receiver with no luck and I made sure to set the surround format for front height not sure what I'm doing wrong please help
Hmm…I’m not 100% confident answering this question without seeing this issue in person, but maybe it’s the fact that the Kenwood stereo receiver isn’t a power amplifier and ONLY a power amplifier? Is there an option in the Kenwood to turn it into strictly an amp instead of a receiver? The Kenwood doesn’t need to process any audio, just power a signal. So if there’s an option in the software of the Kenwood to ONLY power a signal, like Pure or Direct signal option maybe? Since it seems like you’re doing everything right on the Denon side, the Kenwood would be my next troubleshooting step…
@@ealanosborne yeah I even have my Samsung HTIB receiver powering 3 subs via subwoofer preout and a RCA male to female y cable and RCA cables to the aux input of the Samsung receiver
Been following along with your Costco speaker bundle, and going from there up to the 7.1.4 system. This was a great how-to video. Starting off with a 5.1.2, then as more comes in, will be a 7.1.4 final setup along with an external emotiva 5 or 7 channel amp. This was an easy to follow guide on setup. Glad I found this pretty quickly tonight while searching.
On my Marantz Cinema 50 in a 5.2.6 Layout the top middles are connected to Surround back. Now,i would Love to have a Second Configuration to Switch in 5.2.4 but the top middles cannot Run as top Front or Rear top/Height.Or am i missing Something?😊also top middle only Not possible via Surround back.
Yeah, since you have 6 heights already connected, if you switch to only 4 heights, the only way to have your middle heights be assigned as "rear heights" is if you changed the physical connections of those speakers, which would seem like a pain to do every time.
Thanks. I was debating between a 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 setup. My second level of seats will be up against back wall. So I'm debating if the better setup would rear height on back wall/ceiling angled downward or 4 ceiling mounted atmos and no rear surround. Would it make more sense to have rear height or ceiling? Also would you assign the rear height speakers as rear surround in a 7.1.2 or as 5.1.4 rear height atmos?
Yeah, I’d go with 5.1.4 since it completes the 3D immersion with 4 heights, as opposed to only 2 heights in a 7.1.2 setup. And yes, rear heights on ceiling angled down 👍🎉
Ealan, Question for you. In you opinion would you pair up the DenonS760H with klipsch rb-81ii four of them klipsch RC-62ii also two klipsch 10 subwoofer? I'm just not the knowledgeable about the power needs speakers and what this AV puts out. If you have time I would appreciate your thoughts.
Hmmm…yeah, those are pretty nice speakers, especially with the bi-wiring option, and 150w RMS power handling. The s760 will do a decent job, since the RB speakers are super sensitive (97dB), but I would honestly start with Denon’s X series with those speakers, if at all possible. Like the x1700h or X2700h, depending on your budget. Or if you plan on expanding, maybe even opt for the x3700h, since that gives you the option of using a full set of pre outs, being able to power your speakers with external amps some years down the road. An investment that will last you a long time.🤘
@@ealanosborne Thanks for your help. I'll save up to get a stronger AV. Right not I have the klipsch Cinema System5.1.4. wich is to me a good setup in my TV room. Thanks again for your time and effort.
So I want to setup a 5.1.2 or 5.1.4 >>> This is going to be in my living room and the back of my couch is close to the wall. It is a 16 foot long sectoinal. Would you just use FR CNTR FL and 2 speaks in the rear at the corners(or at the side of the main listening position) or would you try and cram 2 rear surrouds in as well ? Also would you do just 2 atmos in between the screen and MLP or do 4 atmos in ceiling if 4 where would you place them close to the front by frl frr and 2ft behind mlp or if 2 atmos where would you place them. thank for your thoughts.
Hi! 👋 I wouldn’t worry about cramming surrounds backs behind. I’d just stick with 5.1.4 with the surrounds to the sides of the couch. I would go for 4 heights, since it really does add a better sense of 3D immersion with the ability for height effects to move between the front abs rear heights. I would mount the rears straight above your couch pointing down at you, and the front heights angled up 30 degrees from where your head is when seated (if possible). That may translate to being high up on the wall or on the ceiling, depending on how far away your couch is from the TV and how high your ceilings are. 👍
Question : I have Denon 3700h running 5.2.4 system with surround back not surround But under speaker configuration when I uncheck surround it doesn’t give me the option to select surround back Any advice?
Well I guess in that case it’s just a matter of speaker placement. Technically your surrounds in a 5.1 setup can be to your sides, slightly back and to the sides, or even behind. So you’re technically placing them in the “surround back” position, but the software isn’t necessarily labeling them as such. 👍
Thanks so much, Chris! 🤘
@@ealanosborne awesome content!! Do you have a video explaining how to connect my floor stage(5 spkrs) to external amps and have my 4 height atmos speakers be powered by the Denon? @@raymondayala5355 Yeah, man! Choose 11.1 Amp Assign, assign the front L/R for the pre out, and then your center and surrounds pre outs will just be “on,” ready to have their signals sent to an external amp. Then the AVR’s internal amps will power the heights. 🤘

Ealan, I never comment on TH-cam videos, but this video was so insanely useful that I just had to post a thank you. IMHO, this is actually useful for TWO sets of people:

*Folks trying to decide which mid-high end AV receiver to buy who are concerned about how the signals are routed if they do not have enough amplified channels on the receiver
Well done, and by the way, you probably saved me $500+ because I now know how I can get away with a 9 channel receiver even though I plan on powering 11 channels (I have external amps, but wasn't sure how it would let me configure them).
Awesome video.

@@ealanosborneplease give us a video about fine tuning the audio settings
Ealan, I have an 8500 HA Denon with 10 in ceiling speakers. I have my LCR driven by a 3 channel bryston. Can’t seem to set it up properly. Could you do a video please. Thank you. Great videos!
You are very knowledgeable and the way you explain is so engaging (and funny ) that things become much easier to understand. Thank you very much!

You’re welcome!!! 🙌
So if I configure Denon 4500h to 5.1.4 the Back channels are useless and cannot be assigned to a zone 2. That sucks
Hey that’s great! Glad I could help! 😁🤘
Hey Ealan, most informative video I have come across as far as speaker setup for the Denon receiver. I have recently ordered the DENON AVR S760H to replace my current receiver in my home theatre, though I cannot figure out what would be the best speaker configuration to go with in settings.
My speakers are installed as follows in my theatre:
1 Sub
1 Center
Front in wall speakers
Mid Ceiling in wall speakers
Rear in wall speakers
Two option dilemma:
Option 1: Set ceiling speakers as the Surround Speakers L/R and set the rear speakers as Surround Back L/R
Option 2: Set ceiling speakers as Top Middle L/R and set rear speakers as Surround Speakers L/R
I have been racking my head on this and your video is the closest and best I have found to solving this dilemma. Thanks and keep up the great work! Subscribed!
Ealan, thanks so much for your content, you’ve accelerated my learning curve dramatically. Could you do a video on fine tuning the audio adjustments of the denon, MultiEQ, surround modes, parameters, etc.?
I’ll see what I can do! 🤘

Yeah, I learned that the hard way. “Wait, why does something seems slightly off now? …Damn you Audyssey!” 😄

I learned the hard way!
You need especial Dolby Atmos speakers to put on the ceiling?
The best Atmos effects are when you mount speakers up high or on the ceiling. But they don’t have to labeled as “Atmos” speakers to be used as an Atmos speaker. A speaker is a speaker, so you can use any passive speaker, really. 👍
@@ealanosborne Thanks, would my Logitech 5.1 z906 system work with a receiver and then add the Atmos speakers on the ceiling ?
I have an Onkyo tx-sr494 and this video helped me so much in properly setting the receiver up for atmos huge thumbs up, My system now sounds amazing with movies and music. On another note, so glad I don't live in an apartment so I'm able to truly enjoy window shaking movies.
Oh nice! Yeah, a lot of the principles are the same, so I’m glad you were able to follow along, even with the Onkyo menu system! 🎉
Having issues with eARC with my new LG Oled and Denon receiver. Atmos works well with apple tv although using native LG apps no Atmos.
Hooray! So glad it’s working!
(But, I would need an email to send them to.)
The only issue I've had so far is that I've picked up a slight humm whit the external 3 channel amp in line.

Great information. Wish you would of kept going. Showing the cable/tv hookup and connections.

@@ealanosborne thank you so much.

Thanks
This is the best video guide for connecting an external amp. I have a Denon X4700h and just got a BasX A3. This is perfect!!! Thank you!!

I just bought a DENON and this is an amazing breakdown of the different configurations for speaker setups. I so needed this video! Thanks!!

How to extend and setup proper Dolby setup of 24.1.10 without using high end preamps like Trinnov Altitude³² or Altitude Ext 48 and flagship avr, amps etc.,
Yeah, but I WANT to see a tutorial, from the 100% beginning, plugging in speaker wires to the end. Can't find that tutorial.

Pre-outs for front L&R and center connected to the BasX A3
You got it! And lastly, double check the Speaker Config page to make sure the Surround Back channels are set to 2 “small” speakers 🤘
Thanks Ealan. My BasX A3 is due for delivery within the hour, so this is perfect timing. :-)
Whoa cool!!! 🤘
@@ealanosbornethanks for the response! I appreciate the information. Thanks again for all your excellent informative videos.

Netflix just changed/added their pricing packages, so maybe 4K/Atmos only comes with the higher priced tiers? I’m going to look into it more myself…
@@ealanosborne thank you for your answer I found the problem I changed some tv settings with the hdmi output
Right?!? 🤔
Correct. “Dolby Sp” assumes they are upward firing. You would need to assign the Atmos speakers as front height or top height. 🤘
And none of the "View Terminal Config." diagrams show the left / right front connections highlighted in the "Pre Out" section
Am I to assume pre-out is always there/on for the LCR channels? This is frustrating, it's my second day trying to figure this out (and I can't find the hard copy manual, to see if it would help)
Any suggestions?
Yes, in theory, the pre outs should just always be “on” when you connect an RCA cable to it, since you are interrupting the audio signal before it hits the internal amp.
Have you tried the Custom amp assign mode? I wonder if that could help with assigning the fronts to be powered by an external amp? I wish I was more familiar with that beast of an AVR, but it’s definitely more customizable than its less expensive counterparts.
By the way, I checked the online manual and it was of little help in regards to settings/ configurations / hookups for LCR external amp.
So all the adjustments and settings are done through your audio video receiver For the emotiva
Yes. The processing all happens within the receiver, where the Emotiva is just an amp, so its only task is to power an audio signal.
Thank you! I was wondering how i could assign for my 3 channel external amp. 🙏🏾
Thanks Ealan. Very informative; loved the paired use of the interface in the AVR to explain the set up options.
I can’t wait till I am able to hook everything up
Woohoo! What a setup you have already ! I’m so excited for you!
You didn’t cover tuner settings like Surround Parameter, Cinema EQ, Dynamic Compression, etc. There is so much more to this…
Please give us this videa
Great video, wish I had seen it sooner. I currently just completed installing 4 height speakers for a 7.1.4 system using the X4700H Denon Receiver and I didn't realize I needed a seperate amp for the height 2 speakers. My question is can I use another receiver, specifically a Denon AVR-1613, for the height 2 speakers?

No, sorry. You would have to have a higher end receiver that has one of those 7.1 input sections to be able to use it as a standalone amp.
As long as you use the 11.1 software assignment, set Floor to 5CH + SB, and set the Pre Out to Front, you can power your 5 bed layer speakers with the A5, and power the rest of your speakers with the internal amps of your x4700h. 👍
Awesome video!!! Definitely helped me a lot with at least understanding the software.

Wondering if you could shed some light on this please and thank you!
Sounds like you have a good ol’ fashioned 5.1 system, is that correct?!
@@ealanosborne correct!!

How do I hook up a 3 channel amp and charge in the assign menu?
How many speakers do you have in your system?
@@ealanosborne Thanks sir👍
@@ealanosborne ok; thank you for the prompt response.
I resorted to the manual and got very confused. Thank you so much for this video which makes it oh so clear now.
Ah, that’s great to hear! Glad I could be of assistance! 😀🤘
Hello Ealan,
I am seeking for experience of 5.1.4 setup like shown at 08:10, "2 Front Height + 2 Top Middle".
on the 1700h receiver, can i run 5.1.2 in the house and also 4 outdoor speakers or do i need another amp to run the outdoor zone? tyia
@@ealanosborne Thank you very much! I followed your advise and all works great! Thanks again, Krzysztof
Having just picked up my AVC-X3700h, this video is brilliant to setup my amp.
I am getting slightly confused with the crossover in my system.
The speakers and info from the manuals are...
Fronts
B&W LM1 - 65Hz to 22 Hz
Crossover - 3.5Hz
Centre
B&W LCR600 S3 - 48Hz to 42Hz
Crossover - 300Hz, 4kHz
Surrounds
B&W VM1 - 65Hz to 22 Hz
Crossover - 3.5Hz
Are these crossover settings correct???
Thanks
Stephen
HELP !!!
on a 5.1.6 or 7.1.4, you cant assign the pre outs to sides surrounds? I saw you were choosing only the fronts and top rear
Thanks.
I recently purchased a used denon 1804, should I factory reset it and reset everything? Thx.
Yes. I would suggest that with anything used, if they haven’t performed a factory reset already. 🤘
If I have. 5.1.4 system with surround back and no side surrounds speakers, will I be able to power all my speakers? Do I loose 2 channels by having to setup 7 bed layer speakers and then turn of the side surrounds? Great
Video!
@@ealanosborne Thanks a lot for your advice. It is hight appreciated.
I know this stream is a little older. I just purchased a Denon AVR 1700 H. I was wondering if you had a video or if you could tell me if mine was able to do a 5.2.2 set up? Or a 5.2.4?
5.2.2 since it’s a 7.2 receiver - 5 ear level speakers, 2 subwoofers, and 2 height channels. 👍
@@ealanosborne ok That’s what I thought. Thanks again for your input
Great info. After seeing this I realized that I should Plug my center straight into the A3 instead of Avr. Would I need to recalibrate if I do this?
@@ealanosborne I’ll try both but thanks for all your help I appreciate it!
Since your room is a square, might as well do a cube - 5.2.4. Typically a 7.2.4 works best in a rectangle. 👍
Question
5.1.4 or 7.1.4 configuration (external 4 amps for atmos speakers) But the goal is to bi-amp fronts. is it possible?

I was planning on buying the Costco 5.0.2 Klipsch Dolby Atmos set and then adding additional 4 ceiling speakers. Will the Denon amp speaker config tool
allow me to take that into consideration (having upfiring speakers AND ceiling speakers)?
Make sense? 😁
@@ealanosborne Yes, thanks! I can always add an amp if needed. Great advice!
Thanks
is their any scenario where any other connections on the back of the pre amp are highlighted or just the front speakers and/or height speakers
in the software on my Denon AVR x3600h. Thank you this video helped a whole lot.
Just the front and rear heights need to be assigned if you’re using a combo of internal and external amps. Otherwise, all the other pre outs are “standing by” if you want to connect an external amp to those as well.
@@ealanosborne Thank You
Thanks.
really helpful video!but I’m wondering why assign 9.1ch for the 5.1.2 setup?why not choose 7.1 since we only have 5ch on the floor and 2 on the top?
I believe you can do that as well. More than one way to skin a cat. 🐈
@@ealanosborne hahaha got it thanks
Would i have to enable passthrough in the settings of the receiver or not. Sorry all this is kinda new to me. Thanks..Phil
Thank you so much Aalan!
Your input is much appreciated.
Excellent! Thank you once again Ealan! I'm setting up my Home Theater with a Marantz av7706 paired with

Nice! Glad I could help in this journey! 😁🤘
i am currently on 5.2. planning for 5.2.2 set up. Does it really worth it ? going for a Top front set up. Thanks
@@ealanosborne yeah with banana plugs its ok 😆
And yes, rear heights on ceiling angled down 👍🎉
Ealan,
Question for you.
Question : I have Denon 3700h running 5.2.4 system with surround back not surround
But under speaker configuration when I uncheck surround it doesn’t give me the option to select surround back
Any advice?
Well I guess in that case it’s just a matter of speaker placement. Technically your surrounds in a 5.1 setup can be to your sides, slightly back and to the sides, or even behind. So you’re technically placing them in the “surround back” position, but the software isn’t necessarily labeling them as such. 👍
