But what I’m saying is the time & attention to detail of putting faces & hats on little pieces of food for a tiny human, that’s something else hats off. We are still healing from her but I still feel stressed when I see a Japanese woman thinking she'll be like the mother-in-law! Miso soup was frequently served, as it’s one of dad’s favourites, but I loved my mum’s homemade kamaboko, gyoza, chirashi, futo maki, the list goes on and on...

This makes me emotional. My Dad is a sushi chef, and he came to the US from Japan on a college wrestling scholarship when he was my age. He told me when he was on a strict diet and cutting weight, he'd fall asleep and see all the wonderful food from home he couldn't eat in his waking life. Fast forward forty years to the present and he's still working his own sushi bar. Growing up I ate everything in this video. I remember fresh miso soup, homemade broiled mackerel, takuan pickles and natto with rice. At every difficult period in life, his answer was and still is to make delicious food for people and be proud that they enjoy his food. I took it for granted as a child, but I think I should call him and tell him how much it meant to me.

When I was in Hiroshima, my boyfriend and I stumbled across this tiny Okinomiyaki place and we didn't know that there were different ways regions of Japan made the dish. It was so delicious and so much food. Half way through eating out meal there was a group of people a few seats away and they were so kind and friendly asking where we were from etc. They ended up sharing a whole bunch of food with us because they wanted us to try all these dishes and get a taste of Hiroshima. I will never forget Japan and the amazing people!
The Japanese are really amazing and warm (except during Tokyo rush hours jk) The food and language differences across Japan are extremely interesting. There's some kind of a rivalry between Hiroshima and Osaka as to which is the true authentic okonomiyaki, but surprisingly after digging a bit... The roots trace all the way back to Edo, or old Tokyo. Basically food that resembled okonomiyaki was sold by travelling food carts from Edo, which just happened to be interpreted differently when spread to the 2 regions.
Japanese breakfast is seriously the best comfort food. My grandmother is from Japan and she used to make this sort of thing all the time growing up. For our miso soup she would usually add cabbage instead of the mushrooms and I think it’s so neat to the see subtle changes in what families like to add.
Convincing masks is a skill a lot of eastern Asians Master, and can be a huge problem, because it’s seen as “raising a fuss”, a lot of sexual harassment and assault goes unreported, so they use their mask
