Japanese breakfast is seriously the best comfort food. My grandmother is from Japan and she used to make this sort of thing all the time growing up. For our miso soup she would usually add cabbage instead of the mushrooms and I think it’s so neat to the see subtle changes in what families like to add.

But what I’m saying is the time & attention to detail of putting faces & hats on little pieces of food for a tiny human, that’s something else hats off. There’s a reason most kids grow up on sandwiches & not little food balls that look like teddy bears, it’s time consuming.

My family and I are from Mexico, but my husband's mother is Japanese. I know not all Japanese mothers fit the stereotype of being like tiger moms but my husband and his older brother were psychologically and physically abused up until the end of the teenage years and it shows! I've known her for five years and it's true, she is the most absolute stereotypical " If-you-don't-succeed-in-life-I-will-disown-you". We are still healing from her but I still feel stressed when I see a Japanese woman thinking she'll be like the mother-in-law!
Rie seems so nice and sweet though which makes me interested in Japanese culture again!

This makes me emotional. My Dad is a sushi chef, and he came to the US from Japan on a college wrestling scholarship when he was my age. He told me when he was on a strict diet and cutting weight, he'd fall asleep and see all the wonderful food from home he couldn't eat in his waking life. Fast forward forty years to the present and he's still working his own sushi bar. Growing up I ate everything in this video. I remember fresh miso soup, homemade broiled mackerel, takuan pickles and natto with rice. At every difficult period in life, his answer was and still is to make delicious food for people and be proud that they enjoy his food. I took it for granted as a child, but I think I should call him and tell him how much it meant to me.

When I was in Hiroshima, my boyfriend and I stumbled across this tiny Okinomiyaki place and we didn't know that there were different ways regions of Japan made the dish. It was so delicious and so much food. Half way through eating out meal there was a group of people a few seats away and they were so kind and friendly asking where we were from etc. They ended up sharing a whole bunch of food with us because they wanted us to try all these dishes and get a taste of Hiroshima. I will never forget Japan and the amazing people!

The Japanese are really amazing and warm (except during Tokyo rush hours jk)
The food and language differences across Japan are extremely interesting. There's some kind of a rivalry between Hiroshima and Osaka as to which is the true authentic okonomiyaki, but surprisingly after digging a bit...
The roots trace all the way back to Edo, or old Tokyo. Basically food that resembled okonomiyaki was sold by travelling food carts from Edo, which just happened to be interpreted differently when spread to the 2 regions.

Everything you do is fascinating!!! I first saw you on the show where a small group of chefs each make their own dish based on a theme or ingredient. All of the ways you did your creations there were so delightful, and I remember being fascinated by the tofu snack (or side dish) idea, where big chunks were stacked, dressed in sauce, and sprinkled with, I think, finely sliced green onion. It just had that Japanese "clean food" quality, and it had a hunger satiating quality, and, it was also fancy and gourmet with the umami sauce and just right green onion topping. When I'm so moved by something, that means that I should pursue it, because it resonates with things my subconscious knows, that I don't necessarily know up front. I'm so fascinated by Japanese food because it seems so clean and light, but really substantial and flavorful at the same time!!! In your above video, I think the dessert looks really fun, but, I was blown away by the okonomiyaki!!! Everything looked really great, though, I really liked this video!!!!!!

The defining characteristic of American food isn't grease. Many cultures use grease, but none use sugar/easy carbs as much as Americans.

But you’re characterizing all of American food culture into just parts of the Midwest and the south. Your not even acknowledging things like the seafood culture of the northeast with items such as clam chowder, quahogs, crab cakes, muscles and more.

I LOVE Rie. She is one of those genuinely kind, wholesome, talented, and one-of-a-kind people whose qualities just give so much to the world. I have cooked so many of her recipes and as I cook I can hear her sweet, diaphanous voice in my head guiding me through the steps. All my best to her, and I hope she reads my comment.
