This song is hundreds of years old, going back to the pirate days. It's an old Irish folk song that's been covered countless times, about a bandit that steals money from Captain Farrell, brings it to his girlfriend, then gets betrayed by her, who ends up killing the good ol' Captain and going to prison. There are different versions, in one it's Captain Pepper and the girls name is Jenny. Metallica covered Thin Lizzy's version, but punched it up a bit.

I don't think he actually kills Captain Farrell. In order to make this a viable modern rock song it had to be dramatically shortened and rewritten to the point of being a "cliff notes' version of the original; wherein Molly (Jenny) pours water in our protagonists' pistol loads. He shoots both barrels, but nothing happens. Had he actually killed the Captain he might have escaped.

"Whiskey in the jar" was an old Irish drinking song... Thin Lizzy made a rock version of it back in the 70's and made it a hit. Metallica decided to cover the Thin Lizzy version in 1998 to honor their late bassist Cliff Burton, who cited Thin Lizzy as a huge influence. Burton was a huge fan of (Late bassist/ vocalist) Phil Lynott (They both passed away the same year - 1986).
This was from a collection of Metallica covering their heroes titled 'Garage Inc.' in 1998... included were also covers by Motorhead, Diamond Head, Mercyful Fate, The Misfits, Blue Oyster Cult... as well as some unusual choices like Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Bob Seger, Lynyrd Skynyrd.

This song is actually a classic Irish Folk song that has been covered by a lot of bands, probably most rock famously by Thin Lizzy back in the day, but there are also some newer versions including this one. The American rock versions have varied the story quite a bit but generally It's a story about a Pirate or Highwayman (robber) who stole a lot of money from a Captain to win the love of a Lady (Jenny, but called Molly here). But the Lady who took the money pretended to love him, but set him up and rendered him defenseless (traditionally she replaced his powder with wet powder) and able to be captured without much of a fight (In the original version the Captain is not killed and captures the Singer). He dreams that his brother who is in the army will come and rescue him before he meets his end in prison. Believe it or not, despite it's dark themes this is a drinking song that was popular in pub sing a longs back in the day. And the Irish are not shy about singing in pubs and almost everybody takes part.. It's part of our culture. Of course as an Irish American who rarely goes out drinking, I can see the virtues, but it would take a lot of ale to get me to sing in a bar. I mourn the culture I never had. Americans don't understand and visitors from Ireland might sing some songs in a pub and not even be that great of a singer, usually passable tho. But the point is not that people are great singers, but that they are sharing a song, and hopefully other people share theirs too or sing along. That is what it's all about. Databyter

Traditionally the song has 7 verses, the robbery of Captain or Colonel Farrell or Pepper, taking the money home to Molly or Jenny (I prefer Jenny because it rhymes with "it made a pretty penny") , going to bed and having his girl set up an ambush against him, the ambush, being put in prison and breaking out, seeking out his brother in the army for help, and the epilogue. It is in the grand tradition of Irish songs about robbing government officials.

There are references to the Story of Patrick Fleming who was a highwayman executed in 1650, so most historians put its origins to then. First recorded in 1950 as a Irish folk song, many folk versions including The Chieftains.
Thin Lizzy was the first to give it a real rock version, Metallica included it 29 years later in a cover album.
My best friend, 20 years my junior, first heard the Metallica version and searching out the Thin Lizzy version totally fell in love with it, he then became a Huge Lizzy and Phil Lynott fan.
I first heard the Lizzy song probably in the 80’s on a Anthology album after the band broke up, but it was my friend playing it for me when I totally fell in love with it.
If you have not heard the Thin Lizzy version, you should, specially the live version, or for folk version The Dubliners from 1967. I was not aware The Grateful Dead had a version, I have to check that out myself.
I do enjoy the Metallica Version, Kirk Hammett purchased the ( Greenie ) guitar from the Estate of Thin Lizzy Guitarist Gary Moore, so he could use it playing it for this song live.
Personally I prefer the Lizzy version, but they are all good!

Next from Metallica i recommend 'Fade to Black', and from their S&M live album: 'Hero for the day', which is done with a symphony orchestra backing them. For a good story type song: Dream Theater's 'The Best of Times' is an amazingly emotional and beautiful song. Definitely checkout the back story for that one.

ROB SQUAD ONCE AGAIN I AM JUST BLOWN AWAY BY YOU GUYS'S OPEN-MINDEDNESS AND ABILITY TO NOT LET YOUR INITIAL FEELINGS ABOUT THIS TYPE OF MUSIC STOP YOU FROM OPENING YOUR MINDS AND AT LEAST GIVING IT A CHANCE!!!
AMBER, YOU SAY THAT YOU FEEL SILLY BECAUSE ALL YOU THOUGHT WAS THAT METAL MUSIC WAS NOTHING BUT NOISE!! THAT'S UNDERSTANDABLE! BUT REALIZE THAT US FANS OF METAL OUT HERE SO APPRECIATE WHEN SOMEONE THAT INITIALLY FELT LIKE YOURSELF GIVES THIS MUSIC A CHANCE AND ACTUALLY FALLS IN LOVE WITH IT!!! THAT IS THE ICING ON THE CAKE AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR YOU TO FEEL SILLY ABOUT YOUR INITIAL THOUGHTS BECAUSE THE FACT THAT YOU GAVE THIS MUSIC A CHANCE AND NOW ARE A FAN OF IT IS ENOUGH TO WIPE AWAY THAT FEELING!!! YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!

There have been some really great covers of songs in everything from folk, country, and jazz into the Metal/Thrash genre.
Cat Stevens did a song back in 1970 called "Wild World" that went to #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA that year. It's a staple on any "soft rock" radio station. There have been a lot of covers of it, but my favorite is the 2001 version by the punk rock supergroup Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies. It's almost completely faithful to the original done but done in double-time and with electrical instruments and a punk drum fill instead of acoustic.

"Whiskey in the Jar" (Roud 533) is an Irish traditional song set in the southern mountains of Ireland, often with specific mention of counties Cork and Kerry. The song, about a rapparee (highwayman) who is betrayed by his wife or lover, is one of the most widely performed traditional Irish songs and has been recorded by numerous artists since the 1950s.

Great song choice by Metallica. Any song from the album Masters if Puppets would be a great choice. For another band play Silver Springs from Fleetwood Mac live from the album The Dance. I would also recommend about anything from Of Monsters and Men. Sloom, Dirty Paws, Mountain Sound, Your Bones, King and Lionheart and Little Talks are all very good.

This is a modernized version of an old Irish song “ Patrick Flemmen, he was a valiant soldier” about Patrick Flemming who was an Irish highwayman who robbed and killed many people before he was executed in 1650 after a woman betrayed him. The refrain
“Mush-a ring dumb-a do dumb-a da” is slurred down from Irish Gaelic once meaning “when I drink I am not me (myself) but is now just a filler without meaning.
Whack fol my daddy-o, whack fol my daddy-o “I gave part (some of the money) to my dad”.
    There's whiskey in the jar
The song was recorded in 1968 by an Irish folk group ‘The Dubliners’ but it’s history goes back much further.
