So, in case no one else does it I’ll explain the shield. Basically it’s a kinetic shield similar to black panther, but a lot stronger. Anything, ANYTHING moving a certain speed doesn’t penetrate the shield, period. You have to move slowly, specifically the speed of air or slower to penetrate it. Hence the line,”the slow blade penetrates the shield.” In the books there was only one weapon that can break the shield, but the feedback loop it caused would detonate both the target and the gunner to explode with the force of a nuclear warhead. Essentially, the shield rendered all ranged weapons obsolete, hence the reliance on blades.
The red/blue effect is a nice way to show shield failure, but the choreo left a lot to be desired for me. Duncan kills a lot of men moving way too fast (like his powerslide disembowelment)
@@LordVolkov true, pretty sure they were trying to up the badass factor for Duncan before he bit the dust. The Atreides aren't stealing the Spice (at least not from the Harkonnens, from the Fremen yes, but that's not really the point here). The Emperor has commanded them to take over from the Harkonnens so that the Harkonnens will attack House Atreides, weakening both houses in the process. The Harkonnens got filthy rich mining the Spice and House Atreides got more and more influential in the Landsraad (a council of all the great houses) so both could get dangerous to the Emperor.
The respective power of the Harkonnen and Atreidies were why the Bene Gesserit wanted to united their houses. Their goal may still have led to the golden path, if only Leto and Vlad could have buried the hatchet. But Jessica just had to give Leto a son... 😅

The Hunter Seeker didn't attack Paul because the room was poorly lit, and the suspensor field allowing it to fly causes distortions in the operators view. Paul moving into the hologram further distorted his shape, and the fact he didn't even flinch when it flew towards him caused the operator to think it wasn't a living being. The door opening was enough motion for the operator to see and lock onto, and likely assumed it was Paul returning to his room. Edit: I saw this in theaters, and I swear the Voice caused the walls to shake. The part in the still tent made me jump. Spitting on the table is a sign of respect because it's freely giving your body's water, and on a desert planet with absolutely no free standing water, water is 140% the most important resource. Eyes of Ibad, the indication of the body's saturation with the Spice, is actually supposed to be a total blue, with no differentiation between sclera and iris.
The people who do the eye roll thing are Mentats. Basically, they are human super computers. Due to events thousands of years before the movies, any sort of complex computer is strictly forbidden. Mentats replace them, and the Spacer Guild uses spice to replace navigational computers for space travel. That's also why they have a monopoly on travel. Also, blades are used because those shields stop fast things like bullets, rendering guns irrelevant.
It makes me sad that DV did so little with the Mentats (and completely disregards Paul's mentat training, which is part of why he's able to see so many futures without going insane😅)
@@LordVolkovAlthough the mentats were part of my favorite aspects of the books, I see why they cut them as you could do so without effecting the plot at all. Too bad GPT did not come out a few years earlier, because they surely (IMO) would have decided to flesh the mentats out more in that case...
"They don't have guns in the future?" Yes, but they're not used so much. Projectile weapons became redundant with the advent of shields, which stop anything so fast-moving. That's why knives and other blades are more prevalent. "The slow blade penetrates the shield". The dart that was shot at Duke Leto was a slow-moving projectile that could make it through the shield, but it only worked because Leto didn't see it coming, otherwise he would have had time to deflect it.
@@vladvulcan My headcanon is that there are conventions so infantry isn't 100% invincible or else bombing everything would be the only viable form of warfare and that would be terrible for everyone.
The movie definitely plays fast and loose with what counts as fast vs slow - the general consensus based on the fight choreo and the prop weapons' designs seems to be that a short, sharp stabbing motion won't penetrate, but a slicing or slashing motion can, because the resistance of slicing across a surface in an arc is enough to make it slower. The movie gets points for telling rather than showing though.
@@Forlorn-kg7zm there are definitely some conventions, but as far as I know, no one forbids using body armor. Nuclear warfare is forbidden, yes. And so are the computers.
Also I assume skilled fighters, like Duncan and Gurney are just good enough to slow the blade riiiiiight as it comes in contact with the shield, so from the side it looks like they are swinging fast
what didn’t he get? for the most part he did and i wouldn’t take it on anyone to not understand everything on the first watch. and it wouldn’t help that his also reacting (talking quite a lot) while watching so he’s bound to miss some things. this movie is big on visuals rather than dialogue. Some needs a few rewatches (with subtitles i suggest) to truly understand all the details if they don’t wanna read the book
Seb incase you didn’t get this part, The emperor (who isn’t seen in this movie) ordered the harkonens to leave arrakis and let house atredies take over in their stead to fulfill spice production. In the process they sabotaged the atredies to make sure they don’t fulfill their duty so the emperor can use that as an excuse to execute them all using the harkonens who would be honored to kill every atredies since both houses are mortal enemies. But ofc the emperor’s army (the saurdukaar) helped them in the fight, he didn’t just let the harkonens fight on their own since house atredies have the best fighters in the emperium. The reason why the emperor betrayed the atredies this way is because he is jealous of duke leto (Oscar Isaac) because he is gaining respect and power from the great houses who also look to him for leadership. I hope this clears any confusion
I think it's even simpler than what you described. It was moving the Atreides away from their very well-defended home-world and onto Arrakis where they didn't have time to build up their defenses especially since the Harkonnen had 80 years of setting up spy networks, hidden assassins, guerilla troops on Arrakis. The Emperor could explain away the destruction of the Atreides on the blood feud between them and the Harkonnen.
@vladvulcan I never read the books either, but the dialogs in the beginning at both House Atreidis (the Emperor's Herold) and House Harkonnen (the Baron talking to Rabban and the Bene Gesserit visit) actually explain a lot of what's happening (+ Chani's monolog in the beginning). If you listen carefully, the political situation and intrigue become quite clear through those conversations.
18:47 I guess during your editing process you might've noticed it but just to make clear, the Atreides are actually good, they weren't there "stealing spice", they were sent there by the emperor, making the previous "owner" of the spice, the Harkonnens, to engage in battle withe the house Atreides. And they don't use guns cause the shield repels anything that is fast, that's why blades are the main weapon there.
Just some facts - this is a new adaptation of the 1965 Dune book, not a remake of the Lynch 1984 film. The directors name is pronounced De-nee Vill-noov. And he has done films of similar score and visuals like Blade Runner sequel Blade Runner 2049 and Sicario and Arrival and Prisoners.
I think it’s so awesome that in the 10,000’s technology and warfare has gotten so advanced that humanity has been forced to go back to more basic things. Like getting rid of computers and going back to combat with swords because the shields can block gunfire
Also, the sand vibrating and it making it like quicksand is a real thing called liquifaction. It’s a real scientific way to explain how the worm can move through sand like it’s water.
5:09 - in Dune's lore, the "eyeroll" people are mentats, basically living computers who are trained to do complex analysis and calculations, because thousands of years ago, a robot uprising led to the banning of all complex AI. This is also the reason spice is so necessary for interstellar travel - the technology to replicate faster than light travel with machines not only is lost to history, it was considered dangerous enough to be destroyed.
More Dune lore: the Atreides are named after (and canonically descended from) the line of Atreus, a mythical dynasty of Greeks who were infamously cursed by the gods for generations.
The technology that allows interstellar travel is the Holtzman drive. You don’t need spice to use the drive. However, in order to safely arrive at your intended destination, incredibly complex calculations are needed to safely navigate through folded space. In the distant past, thinking machine did these calculations. After they were banned due to the Butlerian Jihad, interstellar travel still happened but more than 10% of ships ended up being lost. Then spice was discovered. Consuming spice gave human the power of prescience so a class of humans called Navigators formed a guild. The spice allowed navigators to “foresee” the safe route through folded space, a task that had either been performed by AI or not done at all (resulting in 10% of ships being randomly lost each time they jumped). But again, the Holtzman drive is what actually lets ships jump through space, but its spice that allows the jumps to be reliably safe.
Laseguns exist in the Dune universe but if you hit someone wearing a shield (which basically everyone had) both people explode. And not just explode, it was the equivalent of setting off a nuke. For that reason laser weapons were almost never used because the risk was too great. This is why you see so much hand to hand combat. Something moving slow could penetrate a personal shield.

I’m usually a big critic on a lot of things, but I truly believe this franchise if not screwed up, could go on to be the next biggest thing, whatever you may want to call it, the next Star Wars, whatever. This has so much promise
The Scene with Paul and "the box", and the "GOM JABBAR" at his neck held by the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is an iconic scene, as well as a absolutely necessary plot point in Dune. The Bene Gesserits are 1 of 4 factions that are most important in the Dune world/s there are 1. The Bene Gesserit., 2. The Spacing Guild, 3. The houses of the Landstraad, and 4. The Emperor. The Reverend Mother is testing Paul for a possibilty of being the Kwisatz Haderach a super being that can see/travel through both space, and time. The box is a test of pain via nerve induction to see if Paul can use his human ability to overcome any pain, rather than be an animal, and do anything to escape/avoid pain. The Reverend Mother stopped only because Paul had already withstood more pain than ANY female...Therefore proving he is "HUMAN", and not an animal, which is why the Reverend Mother said "Goodbye YOUNG HUMAN", I hope you live"....PS. The director wanted for Timothy to show fear of the Reverend Mother in his face, and actions...the director said that Timothy was actually "in real life" afraid of the actress while playing her part in this scene...one because she is like a famous actress who is respected by everyone on set (Charlotte Rampling), plus her acting ability combined with her eyes, face, and that veil gave her an aura of power. The cast is phenomenal in this film!
The lore basically is that the shields will block anything that is moving a certain speed but will allow things that are moving slowly through (so you can still breath). The existence of shields basically negates guns and makes them useless. So warfare has gone back to melee weapons and fighting styles that involve a quick strike to get near the shield followed by slower movement to penetrate it and stab. The bombs that they were showing basically did the same thing. They fell fast but then they basically had some means of slowing down at the end to slowly go through the shield before exploding.
The films don't explain it, sadly, but here's the basic point from the book about guns: In this world, laser-guns exist, but there's kind of a snag to them. They don't fire out a single bolt of light like in 'Star Wars' or similar franchises, they fire a continuous beam from the gun barrel to the target. Now, the snag is that if the target happens to be wearing an active shield (which almost EVERYBODY is in this world), the laser causes a reaction when it hits the shield. The shield overloads and detonates, but that overload feeds back through the beam of light into the gun, and detonates it too. So basically, if you laser someone wearing a shield, you kill yourself and everyone around you in the process. This isn't a 'perhaps' thing, this is a guarantee. If you laser a shield, you die. As such, it's too much of a risk for anyone to really both with, so while laser weapons DO exist, nobody cares to use them since they can't be sure if their target is wearing a shield or not.
So are you talking about different types of fines because the 2 movies showed them using guns and they didn’t kill themselves. So you’re saying the laser comes back at the shooter?
Hell yesss!!!! Honestly I would love to see your reaction to Dune part 2, but you should also see it in Cinema! It’s 100% a movie you should see in IMAX 😍
Funny you mention Harkonnens reminding you of Warhammer. Dune was a huge inspiration for a lot of franchises: Warhammer and Star Wars just to name a few
A few notes though: 1. The reason they use swords is because pretty much everyone has body shields, which can block quick blows but if a projectile hits them then they detonate with the power of a nuke. 2. The Harkonens are definitely the bad guys here.
Bullets hitting the shield would simply be blocked. Slower moving projectiles like darts can actually penetrate the shield, like the drugged dart that took down Leto. Energy weapons like lasers, on the other hand, hitting a shield would cause a nuclear explosion, killing both the shooter and the shielded individual. This is why guns are obsolete but lasers exist but used sparingly, while blades have become the primary weapon for soldiers.
The voice in the movie theater, (I didn't see Dune in the IMAX theater) shook the whole theater, and reverberated through my chest, it was awesome!! It is a VERY different experience compared to headphones. And also, because water is such a rare and precious resource, it is the highest compliment to spit in the presence of a high-ranking person, the same can be said for somebody crying for somebody else.
They werent stealing they were appointed there by the emperor and the harkonnens were taken out by the emperor because he was jealous of Atreides’ rise of power hence the sabotage executed by the emperor and the harkonnens
I honestly think this has the potential to match the Lord of the Rings trilogy, these movies are insane, sooo excited for the third one. I just hope it doesn't get Disney'd like Star Wars. I think my only complaint with these movies is that it sometimes takes me out how there is never even a drop of blood to be seen even though they are slicing each other to pieces, I feel like we need an R rated Dune movie but then again, maybe that's to symbolise Arrakis, how there is so little liquid on the planet that there isn't even enough blood to bleed normally lol
I didn't really give it a chance when it came out, but I just watched them back to back and damn it's just a good series. Like high level filmmaking across the board
Not only does the Spacing Guild use the spice for interstellar travel and the Bene Gesserit use it to enhance their skills, but anyone in the imperium who can afford it, which is only the wealthy because it's so expensive, uses it for the health benefits. Spice is also highly addictive, and withdrawal from it is very dangerous and often deadly. In the books almost everyone wears contact lenses to hide the blue eyes of their addiction. If spice production on Arrakis stops the resulting lack of spice would cause the imperium to collapse. Allthough it's a quote from David Lynch's Dune and not the book, "He who controls the spice controls the universe." is the general sentiment at the time this story takes place. One of the things the Kwisatz Haderach will do is show people a new way of looking at how the spice is controlled.
In the cinema you could feel Hans Zimmer’s score in your rib cage, i watched it at home because it was COVID and next day went to see it in theaters with my sister because i needed to experience it in person. It was crazy. Dune 2 was similar, Zimmer is a genius
The shields show that weapons have advanced so much the these shields stop bullets fast moving objects so only slow moving objects can penetrate them, taking warfare back to hand to hand. I love the concept for the future . Part 2 is amazing as well!!
On Imax, the bass of the voice punches through your body, making it feel like you're being assaulted by the command, just like the character. It's why I saw both films 3 times. It is so amazing and well done! Just a freaking masterpiece of cinema.
To answer your question about why House Atreides was sent to Arrakis (replacing House Harkonnen) was because the Emperor of the Imperium was growing jealous of the power and influence the Atreides family had over the other Houses within the vast empire. Due to the Emperor being a passive intermediary between all the great Houses, he couldn’t outright attack House Atreides or order one, so he made a deal with the Harkonnens to give them an easy trap to lure the Atreides to their deaths and give them a viable reason to attack (the two Houses have been feuding for thousands of years anyways) allowing for the Harkonnens to eliminate their sworn enemies and for the Emperor to get rid of any competition. War between the Houses is not illegal so the Emperor could claim that he had no involvement with the fighting. In the novel it’s a lot more explicit with the planning of the attack with the Sardaukar (the Emperor’s personal legion of elite soldiers) being disguised in Harkonnen gear to assist them in battle. It’s also a lot more prevalent in the novel that the Atreides know they are going to be ambushed with Duke Leto planning ahead for an incoming battle but what he didn’t account for was a traitor and the sheer scale of the attack. I’m a little disappointed they didn’t include the subplot from the book where Hawat suspects Lady Jessica of being the spy leading them down the wrong path instead of Doctor Yeuh. They didn’t believe he was the spy due to the fact he had gone through Imperial Conditioning essentially stating that he could not be corrupted, but of course the Harkonnens got a hold of his wife and black mailed him into their services (gross fact, it is also hinted that the humanoid spider was what the Harkonnens turned the Doctors wife into).
Such an incredible movie. Saw it a dozen times before the second one came out, then saw Dune 2 twice in the theaters. Such incredible cinematography, sound design, and acting!
The original film directed by David Lynch is very good. Maybe watch it after you have seen part 2. It has a unique style and effects are a little dated i suppose, but it has a certain charm. Cast are great, costumes are awesome.
Maybe you didn’t really listen when they explained it, but the shields only stop things that are moving fast. That’s why soldiers rarely if ever use guns, the shield technology has rendered guns obsolete. Meanwhile, with hand to hand combat, you can slow down your hits so that they pass through the shield. The only place where guns are a thing is in the Arrakis desert because people don’t wear shields in worm territory (the shield’s vibrations attract worms)
10:10 hunger seekers are attracted to movement (thus why Paul was being super still) and it rushed to his eye when it saw him blink (the tension of the scene being if he made the slightest movement he would die)

About the two guys who rolled their eyes in 2:49 and 5:00, they're called mentats. Essentially, they are human computers whose abilities to analyze information exceed any regular humans by a far margin. You might think their duties should be handled by actual computers but any form of AI is forbidden in the Dune universe. Long story short, they did develop an AI a while ago but it rebelled against humans. They suffered a bloody war against this AI, and while they managed to defeat it, any machine similar to humans has been banned ever since. Humanity focused on developing their minds to replace computers, hence the mentats, as well as Bene Gesserit with their Voice.

Can't wait for you to react to the second one. and even greater masterpiece! Denis is brilliant and the cast is absolutely amazing. Also, Stilgar is a tribe leader and Jamis is apart of his tribe. In the books Jamis is described as a hot head by Stilgar, especially because in the movie, Jamis kept trying to push Stilgar to kill them, when he's like "What are we waiting for? We need their water". In the books when this happened, Stilgar had to keep telling Jamis to shut up. Honor is a big thing among fremen in the books, and he felt dishonored being bested by Paul who was a foreigner and child at the times. Jamis challenged them to save face.

So something they dont explain in the film is that they do have laser weapons but when it comes in contact with shield it creates a nuke basically. So its just probably too silly to show that lol since everyone in this world knows and avoids it.
Due to a previous AI war computers are basically outlawed. The people whose eyes turn upwards are trained to perform advanced computations and math for the great houses they serve.
So the eye rolls people are mentats, they are basically living computers and are able to do super complex calculations in seconds. dune is actually set roughly 24000 years into the future, the date is 10000 years after the butlerian jihad if i recall correctly
Nice to learn about this! I thought he used the voice silently on that 😅
Well, there is standing water in the 2nd movie....but that's not exactly natural.
Who was the guy in the wall v was that a suicide mission?
The people who do the eye roll thing are Mentats. Basically, they are human super computers. Due to events thousands of years before the movies, any sort of complex computer is strictly forbidden. Mentats replace them, and the Spacer Guild uses spice to replace navigational computers for space travel. That's also why they have a monopoly on travel.
Also, blades are used because those shields stop fast things like bullets, rendering guns irrelevant.
It makes me sad that DV did so little with the Mentats (and completely disregards Paul's mentat training, which is part of why he's able to see so many futures without going insane😅)
The dune universe is basically the distant future of the terminator universe
@@LordVolkovAlthough the mentats were part of my favorite aspects of the books, I see why they cut them as you could do so without effecting the plot at all. Too bad GPT did not come out a few years earlier, because they surely (IMO) would have decided to flesh the mentats out more in that case...
"They don't have guns in the future?"
Yes, but they're not used so much.
I wonder why the armor doesn't help against slowly moving blades. Just wear a damn armor and you are good.
Also I assume skilled fighters, like Duncan and Gurney are just good enough to slow the blade riiiiiight as it comes in contact with the shield, so from the side it looks like they are swinging fast
seb continually misunderstanding the politics made me laugh what a good video
To be fair it’s taken me a few watches to get everything going on.
what didn't he get? also asking for me lol
what didn’t he get? for the most part he did and i wouldn’t take it on anyone to not understand everything on the first watch. and it wouldn’t help that his also reacting (talking quite a lot) while watching so he’s bound to miss some things. this movie is big on visuals rather than dialogue. Some needs a few rewatches (with subtitles i suggest) to truly understand all the details if they don’t wanna read the book
@@johncruz1379exactly he got the jist of most of it though so I can’t blame him especially since he knew nothing behind it to begin with.
@@bani_niba stil, that all wouldn't have worked if not for the traitor Yue
There's a lot of things Seb didn't get about this movie.
@@doomse150 it's totally unclear for those who haven't read the book. The movie itself doesn't explain this stuff.
When you have a massive war to get rid of the AI that took over, you tend to distrust computers.
@@vederianl9723 as they should😂 They seem better off without them
Also, the sand vibrating and it making it like quicksand is a real thing called liquifaction. It’s a real scientific way to explain how the worm can move through sand like it’s water.
That scene with the reverend mother is my favorite. I loved the shift of power and her subtle fear when he stared her down.
The shields block stuff on the basis of how fast it’s going. They’ve pretty much made guns obsolete.
So why do they gun guns in the movie?
Laseguns exist in the Dune universe but if you hit someone wearing a shield (which basically everyone had) both people explode. And not just explode, it was the equivalent of setting off a nuke. For that reason laser weapons were almost never used because the risk was too great. This is why you see so much hand to hand combat. Something moving slow could penetrate a personal shield.

FEAR IS THE MIND KILLER !
THERES NO WAY
I can’t believe you haven’t seen this, part 2 is freaking amazing maybe of the best films and acting is soooo amazing
The 1984 movie isn’t the “original” they’re just both adaptations of the same 1965 book
People doing the eyerolls are the advisors and computers.
yeah, the mentats
The films don't explain it, sadly, but here's the basic point from the book about guns:
In this world, laser-guns exist, but there's kind of a snag to them.
This is actually a nice replacement for forbidden nuclear warfare. Just laser some shields!
@@vladvulcanI think doing that on purpose is a crime punishable by planetary anhilation.
So are you talking about different types of fines because the 2 movies showed them using guns and they didn’t kill themselves. So you’re saying the laser comes back at the shooter?
@@tmac731 neither of the movies didn't show a laser beam hitting a shield. Fremens don't wear them.
Finally, this series is so good!
HOLY SHOT IVEE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG YK HES FINNA DO PART 2!! Thank you so much I’ve asked for this a few times. Cannot wait to see this
A few notes though:

So, the Ornito-pter (Meaning Bird winged, opposed to our Helico-pter, Meaning Screw-winged) are described as having bird wings in the books.
True but the dragonfly look is so much better
As someone who watched Part One in theaters and had to wait for Part Two, I'm so excited for you to watch Part Two
the way the scale and environment is portrayed is absolutely incredible
It's fun to read the book and graft notice that alot of characters talk about events that are too large a stretch of time for our current lifespans.
In the cinema you could feel Hans Zimmer’s score in your rib cage, i watched it at home because it was COVID and next day went to see it in theaters with my sister because i needed to experience it in person. It was crazy. Dune 2 was similar, Zimmer is a genius
SILENCE
Your not wrong. In the Cinema this film is incredible to watch. The sound and cinematics are brilliant.
19:50 slow movements can get through the sheild but not quick movements which is why they use swords rather than guns
I was literally searching for this yesterday since every single movie reaction TH-camr had already seen it
16:53 crazy how accurate that comment was 😂
Maybe you didn’t really listen when they explained it, but the shields only stop things that are moving fast.
Finally, a nice break from children's movies.
Seb, filming location for Arrakis is Wadi Rum in Jordan. It is one of the most amazing places I've visited.
Loads of other movies have been filmed there. The Martian, Lawrence of Arabia, Rogue One.
If you get the chance go. Jordan is a wonderful country,, the people, the food, plus Dead Sea, Red Sea, Petra, Wadi Rum and Loads more ❤
what a good surprise
guns don't work anymore because of shields. Fast moving objects can't get through them unless it completely overwhelms the shield.
I've watched the 2 films in Imax. It's a great experience.
Humanity focused on developing their minds to replace computers, hence the mentats, as well as Bene Gesserit with their Voice.
fun fact : Star Wars is apparently based on Dune 😂 since Dune came out before there are some similarities tho i find it pretty cool (i might be wrong but i might be right)

Due to a previous AI war computers are basically outlawed. The people whose eyes turn upwards are trained to perform advanced computations and math for the great houses they serve.
Guns are ineffective because of the shields, they’d just stop any projectile in its path.
