Not a good idea. The electric currents in the batteries and the motors will electrify everything around it and possibly causing a fire or an explosion. Stay safe.
9 months later, but it's on sale from Zavvi with a code that brings it down 33%, plus free shipping (in the US at least). Reddit post about it: www.reddit.com/r/legodeal/comments/gfsnka/usa_4x4_extreme_offroader_42099_16699_332_off_at/
Nice review, good to see direct comparison with 9398, and that the motors are an improvement both on the flat and when climbing (after gear change). Guessing Lego will eventually provide a more generic interface for the control +, especially as 42100 has 2 of them and 7 motors, it would be crazy not to provide people with a way to control their own MOCs.
@RacingBrick, thank you for all your LEGO technic reviews and sharing your knowledge. My son and I enjoy watching your videos and learning more about his LEGO 4x4 x-treme off roader and Rally car. I have a question regarding the 4x4 off roader, is the forward motion of both XL motors supposed to have more inertia and speed than the reverse motion? I assume both set of gears should move in either forward or reverse action? I asked because I notice recently that the forward speed of his 4x4 seems to be slower than reverse and upon troubleshooting, I saw that the front motion of the front wheels are noticeably slower. Thanks in advance for any advice.
@@JacobMoonsMocs I already made an adapter cable to control PF motors with the PU hub, you can check it here - th-cam.com/video/JhmnfmJ1ewA/w-d-xo.html I don't think it really makes sense the other way around, without the female connector you'd need to cut the wires of the motors and attach a PF connector. Since the PU motors won't have any added benefits over the PF ones without the "smart control" there's really no point of doing this.
During the test I used 1.2V reachargeables. With 1.5V alkalines the performance would be better initially but that quickly drops, even below the level of the rechargeables.
This is an awd car so it would need 2 gearboxes, 1 per motor. There is no space in the chassis for even 1 gearbox. Great review though, I might buy it if there is a way to disable the "clutch."
You can only be upset if you were upset about the lack of power with Power Functions as well since their performance is pretty similar - th-cam.com/video/KbpmNvCJI-Q/w-d-xo.html
Lego power supply are actually pretty awful. The motors have alot of power if you buwizz 3.0ed on both you will get drastically different results! You can also change the gears on the old crawler just not as easy. But really I own the old one and it can't move for beans with the stock power unit. V2 receiver helps though.
Great informative review. Thanks. One improvement, for me, would be to get rid of the annoying music please. I had to turn down the sound to get rid of it then you started to mention sounds from the machine and I couldn’t hear them. Also, I found I had to go back a few seconds so many times: once to read the script then rewind to watch the vision. Very annoying. Why don’t you just talk to us and drop the sub-titles? (I think sub-titles can be turned on by option anyway, so no need for your titles). Despite these things, I made it to the end of your review because if your content and quality vision. You made a lot of great points. Thanks again. Cheers, Antoine
Glad you like the review. About the music - I cannot choose one that everyone likes, so I choose one that I like. If you don't like it simply use the mute button, easy as pie. In my newer videos I changed the subtitles and I talk, and surprisingly there are people who does not like when I talk so again, can't please everyone :)

hello
That is the best review of 42099! I really like that you have also tested changed gears!
Thanks, glad you like it :)
Changing the gearing made this so much better for off road, I think the standard gearing is so it’s less likely to get boring being slow.

You're a fast builder. Took me five hours to complete the set and test it.
I was on the fence about this set, but seeing the difference that gearing made, I'm sold now. Well, when it's reduced 30% I'm sold!

Bionicle fans rise!!! We have KEETORANGE!!!!
Looks like it is hidden crawler. Going to buy it and do a crawler!
Going to buy another one? ;)
Awesome! Thanks
It would be so cool if it would be possible to flick a switch on the 42099 to swap between rock climbing mode and standard (road mode)!
Can you connect the new motor to a buwizz or a sbrick ?
Ehhh no... the connectors are completely different :/
I wonder if you could mod a wire to work

Thanks for the review:D you should switch out the electronics of 42099 with a BuWizz and the older motors

Does every wheelhub ( from every Generation) make the wheels slower but stronger ? Or only the New one

V2
Nice! Can the 9398 also be modified to be stronger? If so, how would both of them, modified, compare?
Yes, replace the tan piece with the grey 24t and a 8t with your own pieces
The 9398 is still the best overall crawler too bad i don't have one :(
I wonder what would be the difference in performance between 1.2V rechargables and 1.5V regular batteries.
During the test I used 1.2V reachargeables. With 1.5V alkalines the performance would be better initially but that quickly drops, even below the level of the rechargeables.
Does it really drop that quickly? Also did you test maybe for how long can you play with this set on fully charged batteries?
I didn't test it. During filming I could play with it for an hour without any significant drop in battery level.
@@TossiCheeser I use 6 1.5V batteries.played for several hours and have no significant performance reduce,it's beyond my expectation.
Not fair. 41999 should use Winch, because 42099 use Bluetooth))))

Impressive review. I see though that wheels slip because of the differentials. Could you do the tests again without the diffs?
At which point do you think the set is limited by the diffs?
@@RacingBrick 12:00
@@ryzen4368 I see. Removing the diffs would put a lot of stress on the motors during turning so I don't think it is a good idea.

True
Is it now possible to control the hub with the new remote?
Yes - th-cam.com/video/hLbr4si2Qfs/w-d-xo.html

The set has one motor per axle by default

Не правильно српвнивайте с 9398, у них понижения разный, вот и разница! У 9398 старые колёса там диски прокучиваются в покрышке.
No LEGO sets will have the exact same gearing and tires, so based on your assumption it would be impossible to compare any of them.
I think you really need to mount the roof & tailgate the proper way, on your MODded 9398.
It’s a common mistake.
