      Both should have been released on the PC-Engine CD + TurboGrafx CD. They would have sold wonderfully for the platform. I'd have gotten them for my TG-CD back in the day. Rusty plays better than the Valis games to me + the main character is alot more badass. I love how she's basically Rachel from the Ninja Gaiden reboot, only 15 years sooner... a female demon hunter

    Gotta wonder if one of the team owned a Commodore Amiga, as that first level looks a lot like Zool, and the character select theme is VERY Amiga-ish.

    • @DragoonEnRegalia
      @DragoonEnRegalia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hardly impossible. The Amiga had a cult following in Japan, exemplified by the likes of ex-punk/Berserk musician Susumu Hirasawa using it for his work. Japanese PC mags also tended to cover more imports than the usual big publications, so savvy devs would have seen or even gotten to play something as out there as Zool.

    I got this game working on my modded mini snes and it's pretty fun! it's always cool seeing people talk about games this obscure, especially with the actual hardware! I also appreciate the story elements and how the game works! I've been wanting videos like this for certain games for a while!

    I'd heard of Rusty before from HG101 but Totsugeki! Mix is completely new to my ears! Galaf's red robe and big pauldrons kind of remind me of Xellos the Red Priest from Slayers.
    Also, I feel kind of spoiled with two PC-98 Paradise videos in a month! Can't wait to see what game you'll cover next.

  • @shikonaori

    I just wanted to say I'm super glad I found your channel! My only real exposure to the PC-98 has essentially just been random screenshots repurposed for aesthetic Tumblr posts (lol) so it's great to get a detailed look at what the system actually had to offer. I love the sort of candy land/sweets theming in this title, it's definitely more shallow compared to Rusty but I appreciate the cuteness. It's crazy to think there's so many games we missed out on over here in the west!

  • @AmelieDoree
    @AmelieDoree 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Woo, more PC-98 content!! Wonderful to see Totsugeki Mix get some wonderful coverage too, I always thought this game was really cute but I remember the DOS/V version being kinda buggy so I never got far, and it runs too fast on my PC98 set to 31khz mode (no 24khz monitor or converter here sadly...).
    Any chance you might cover some VNs or something at some point? I feel like the only person on YT trying to make detailed reviews on old PC98 ADV games and such, haha

    • @BasementBrothers

      I'm not really into visual novels very much (which might seem strange since I'm so into PC-98), but I'm not against covering them someday if I feel I have something interesting to say about one of them. It usually takes me at least several weeks to get a new video out at the pace I'm working, so I can only cover the games I really want to, and at a snail's pace of course. Thanks for watching.

    • @AmelieDoree
      @AmelieDoree 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@BasementBrothers That's totally fair - I feel like maybe some of the RPG hybrid ones may be of interest to you, like Dragon Knight 4 or Crystal Renar. I haven't played either but the former is by a famous VN writer (Hiruta Masato) and the latter is by a company with a generally pretty good output (D.O.). They're both on my list of titles to cover, DK4 especially since I've already made a video on a Masato game and absolutely love his writing style and themes.
      Either way I'm just happy to see more on PC-98 games. Take as much time as you need!

    Nice review and history lesson on this PC-98 action/adventure game. I sure as hell would have loved to have played a Super NES, Genesis, and/or Sega CD conversion of _Totsugeki! Mix_ in my youth. If the now-defunct Working Designs knew about it, that probably would have been the hypothetical Western publisher if they could have gotten the now-defunct C-Lab to make console conversions of it on the aforementioned hardware out at the time. I assume that the Western release(s) would have been called _Magic Sisters_ are something along those lines. Like _Rusty_ , maybe you guys can get Nao Papa to possibly get updated Steam, Switch, and/or PlayStation 4 and 5 international re-release somewhere down the line. Keep up the good work.
