- Looking to attached wood board or anything to masonry cement block or concrete? Well, here is the quick video where we'll show you how to attach wood to cement block using concrete screws. The concrete screws are the easiest and the quick way to accomplish this utilizing a simple drill and impact driver. Tapcon screws can be used on cement block, masonry, bricks, concrete, cinder block and retaining walls. Tapcon concrete screws can be used to affix anything for vertical concrete application as well as on the floor level.

Thanks Hassan. Would these screws also be suitable for plywood/OSB to masonry blocks too? I know you said anything, but was unsure if those materials are too thin/flimsy.

I used the same product and even have the same drill and the bit would not drill into the cinder block. What was your drill settings?
I used a basic black and decker electric drill.

For holes on the masonry block, a regular drill is fine. For drilling holes in concrete, you may need a slightly powerful drill or a hammer drill. Check the product and tool links in the description of the video.
what do you think about screwing the 2×4 on top of the wall? I'd like to build a couple 2x8 frames for privacy and think because of the wall I have to use the the top so they'll be sturdy. Thanks your video is helpful to us DYIer with two left hands

My drill isn’t making it more than 1.5 inch into the concrete
First, throw those screws away. Just remember 16 16 16, drill a 3/16 th hole with a masonry bit, put a piece of 16 gauge annealed wire in the hole and drive a 16d common nail. You can attach to concrete, brick or block. Try it, I was sceptical also.
Would you use the same method if you were putting a 20ft ledger for a 20x20 patio roof?
These screws may not be the best when it comes to pull strength. If the ledger is to be attached to the concrete or masonry, I would prefer to use wedge anchors. Also, consider adding post to the ledger as well for added stability.

Does it matter if you screw into hollow section of block?
That's a great question. The block thickness at its hollow section is about an inch or more. So if the screw is long enough to penetrate about 1/4 - 1/2 beyond that thickness, you should be good. Ideally if you can catch the solid portion, that would be desirable.

Just use an impact drill. No need for pre-drilling.
That is not recommended as it could damage the screw thread and its ability to hold. Also, the masonry block and concrete might crack as well.

I am assuming you are referring to convert/ masonry that has a stucco or plaster on it. This should definitely work on that surface as well.

That's correct. no need for wall plugs. They are special concrete/ masonry screw that would drive into the concrete/ masonry block similar to a wood screw.
