"Those places were more like my home to me than my house was- Everybody needs some place they can go, on those nights they can't go home" ...that broke my heart
today is or would have been my Mom's 88th birthday!!! She loved Bruce and the E Street Band...well, she got her wish before losing her life to cancer, after a 20+ yr battle of 3 + different cancers...she and I went to Pgh and she saw all her E-Street Band perform 2 nights in a row and a Bruce solo..and in her late 70's...now That is a fan...just wish Bruce could have met her.
how can this man take ordinary words and touch me so? And he does it so effortlessly. And I try all day and night to write something meaningful and fail
OMG!! You just described my son's life. You know about surviving a father. Your Mom saved your life with your guitar and her prayers for you. My dreams and prayers for my son were for college, and he is saving himself. He loves learning, I am so proud of him. You love your guitar it is how you saved yourself.
His dad loved him, but never told or showed him. Never told him how proud he was of him and how he liked his music. Bruce wrote even songs about/for his dad, never heard a word about it. Until he was sick, just before he died. Bruce asked him about that. Dad loved those songs the most and listenedto them a lot.. He showed his love when Bruce failed de test for joining the army. Friends, naber hood boys, they all went to Vietnam to fight the war but never came home. The ones whom came home, weren't themselves anymore. Dad always told Bruce, that if he had to go to join the US army, they would cut his hair, would make a man out of him. Bruce didn't tell about going to the test, but when he came home, dad asked " where have you been". When Bruce told him that he had to go to the test, that he failed dad said "GOOD". That was him showing that he loved his son. Dad was glad that his son didn't have to fight in Vietnam and probably dies.. He loved his son, wanted the best (future) for him, become a man, having a good job. But Bruce had long hair, loved his guitar whichmom bought him and made some music. But, what did he wanted, do with his life? Be a musician? Dad was just worried. Dad became mentally ill. Schizophrenia. Then he died.
In 85 he did 6 or 7 shows when he came to LA. I HAD TO BE THERE! I could only go to 3 shows. It was torture those nights I couldn't be there! Knowing what was going on on and me missing it! My score is 33. My 1st being 9/80. I regret missing 1978(I think) show at the Forum.
I was at this show too. I was 17 and my girlfriend at the time knew a friend of Bruces and we made it backstage. I was too fucked up wasted to really appreciate it. Damn...
I was at this show. when he started off the story with him and his sister I thought maybe a different version of the original "true story" on this song....I saw the 1st live performance of it at No nukes show in 79.before he released the album the following year. he dedicated to her that night and wrote this beautiful song for her. heard the haircut stories & wacha gonna do with ur life ones before. so this was just a blend of all three...LOL but a nice intro to it nonetheless :)
Kralju sve tvoje pesme su najbolje na svetu, ali ova je vrh.

ohhhh, words could never do justice to just how amazing this man is
This is where Bruce and the E. Street Band was at the top of his/there game. Everything was top notch.
He fine tuned this story at his concert at the Coliseum LA in 1985 and it is even better! One of the best interludes of a song of all time!
He puts so much heart and emotion in his music, that what makes him one of my favorite musicians :D
the piano in this song is amazing. can't get enough
Thank you Bruce for everything, you're The Boss :)
My poor dad and mom during the 60s
I turned 1 on 8/14/84. took me 26 years to love this song.wtf! where have i been?
