What a player! I just found this as I was prepping for a Yom Kippur service. I’ve been a professional keyboard player since I was 13, and am now semi-retired in Northern VA. Zuill grew up around here, and I know his parents and sister, who are all musicians.
In 2002/2003 (don’t recall exactly) my ex-wife (also a cellist) was acquiring her MusicEd degree at George Mason University. Her cello prof (who was Zuill’s teacher when he was in high school) invited her to perform for a master class with Zuill and a few of her studio mates. The prof asked me to accompany Zuill for the class. I received the music (an obscure baroque piece that I don’t even recall) on Wednesday for a Saturday performance. Let’s just say that the next few days were a fury of practice and nerves.
I met Zuill about 15 minutes before the performance, we rehearsed it once straight through. He was playing that same Matteo Gofriller “Rosette” cello. It was crafted in 1693. I was playing on a Steinway “D”, and as I finished the opening intro of the piece Zuill came in and I was astounded at the tone and power of that instrument.
A momentous day in my musical career! I have been blessed.
Even those of us who know any little bit about cello and music can understand we are in GREAT company.
4:39 dear God in heaven his c string literally crushes any other cello ive ever heard.
It’s quite the sound!!
Try this one: th-cam.com/video/VjGqcSGGPfU/w-d-xo.html (ok, ok, I know it’s cheating... but I promise you’ll like it)
I am touched to my core ...the brilliance and the sadness are over-whelming
Exquisite. I am so happy Mr. Bailey is coming to Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art. Thank you for your artistry, genius and decades of practice to share with the world. Thank you.
The best performance and interpretation of this beautiful music I have found anywhere! Connects directly with your soul!
You’d probably like this one too, the most impassioned and emotional performance I’ve come across, by Mikyung Sung accompanied by her mother: th-cam.com/video/VjGqcSGGPfU/w-d-xo.html
@@matthewv789 fabulous. Thanks for sharing. The pianist playing rachmaninoff was also outstanding. I started playing cello 5+ years ago on my 70th birthday. No prior experience playing any instrument, only listening since high school. Listen to the Scottish Fantasy, fabulous performance and recording.

Thank you. Mourning my sister and this brought me to tears.
I was lucky enough to be conducted under his baton around a year ago! Later in the concert, he played this piece with a full orchestra and it was amazing.
Jon Snow KILLIN IT on the cello!
I thought it was Jason Kleinberg
Literally came to comments to say that!
At 5:36 It’s so heavenly! Then at 6:10 it just touches the deepest part of my soul! Praise God for beautiful music! ❤️👏
Yes, those are my favorite parts! 🤩
His playing is like the movements of energy between the heavenly spheres . I love all of his work, but the Jewish themes play my heart.
MASTERPIECE. Freakin beautiful.
Beautiful music Zuill
Your positioning of the bow and your grounded technique certainly gelled together to make a beautiful representation of Bruchs piece.
Bruch actually didn't write this...
Wonderful Tone. Clear and super expressive vibrato.
So wonderful !!!
That expression! Fantastic!

WONDERFUL!!!
Zuil Bailey is among the best, I love his tone and he seems to be a wonderful human too!
Wonderful. Wish I could play like this
Well done!
Incredibly beautiful. Unreal.
So romantic!!!
he came to my school
Beautiful and expressive playing, the way it is actually sung!
Very nice.
Bravo!
5:02 😍😍 literally makes me want to cry! This piece is so beautiful!
Très bon !
Wow!!!
WOW
Does anyone know why this is almost never performed in its original G minor?
Portia Zwicker If I'm not mistaken, D minor is the original key. I've searched near and far for a version in G minor and have had no luck.
As someone who learned this piece back in the early Sixties, I can assure you that D minor is the original key (although the latter part of the composition is in D major). I think that you may be confusing it with Bruch's Violin Concerto no.1, which is indeed in G minor
Wow they made the guy at the camp play this 3 times concentration
I just watched the same video. Had to come and hear it myself.
What IS that on the 'cello under the finger board - excuse my ignorance - and what's its function?? (a good glimpse at 3:50)
it is a rose, Zuill Bailey has one of the two cellos in the world that have a rose carved into it also, he came to my school and played!!
Lilyann McMartin me tooooo just today and he also played THIS EXACT SONG IT WAS LITTT in honor of 9-11 which wasn't so lit but it was SO COOL THAT HE CAME TO MY SCHOOL
Nice
I prefer the chamber version (cello/piano) over the orchestral. Loved this evert since hearing the Jaqueline Du Pre performance on tape.
Amateur phrasing.
