Notice that the folks who would be the first to hold a sign that says, "I don't co-parent with the government" are the same ones who want to tell you what your kids can read, what you let your kids wear and whether or not you are allowed to make a fb account for your kid. It's too bad we can't assume parents have the ability to regulate.
Rules for thee, not for me
Are you actually sitting there behind your kid the whole time they're on Facebook or Tiktok, every time? Almost nobody is actually supervising their kids after they make these accounts, and then they get mad that the entire online world isn't safe for unsupervised 10-year-olds.
I agree with DeSantis on almost nothing, but my main problem with this is putting it on social media companies rather than the parents, because device makers already give you parental controls. If parents *can* regulate, then you have to be doing so, 24/7. Otherwise, the people who wind up parenting your kids are actually internet randos, not you, and I didn't agree to do that for you. It should actually really just be criminal child neglect to fail to supervise your kids on the internet, but nobody with kids is going to go for that for some reason.
Well if they keep forcing women, who have no business having kids like those addicted to drugs or those who do not want to parent, to give birth, we can assume that not all parents have ability to regulate, sadly. But I do agree the government needs to stop trying to regulate individual choices and worry about things that affect everyone like pollution, toxic chemical dumping, horrible air quality, making sure those who have young children have enough food for them, that the working poor can afford housing, and our eminent rising sea levels. But focusing on drag shows to "protect" the children is clearly more important than protecting children from gun violence. So sad they either are too stupid to see hypocrisy, or worse they know about the hypocrisy and do not believe their constituents are smart enough to realize it or do not care if they do realize it.

I raised honest kids who respect me and more importantly, they respect themselves. So when they took baby steps away from me, I was confident I had given them the tools to make healthy decisions. The Internet is just one example of ways you have to trust your kid. They will do potentially dangerous things that take them out of your sight, like join teams and go to sleepovers. You have to have good communication with them so you are confident that they know how to handle dangerous situations and that they will come to you if anything scary happens. No one has eyes on their child 24/7. You must not have children.
@@peterharris8471 Children who join teams and go to sleepovers are being supervised by adults who have agreed to supervise your children! If you want to do that, I don't really care, but if your kids get exposed to adults talking about things like the horrors of slavery or frank talk about human sexuality, you had better be really sure they're ready for that, because the internet is not made for your children to be wandering around unsupervised. This isn't signing up for a softball league; this is dropping your kid off at a truck stop and leaving them there for however long. If you're ready for what that might mean, fine, but the rest of the internet should not be made safe so that you don't have to babysit your own kids.
If they're like 15 or 16, whatever, they'll be fine, but people are doing this with elementary schoolers, and I do not want to suddenly discover I am having a conversation with your eight-year-old on Twitter.
Here's something I've never really heard anyone say about the dynamic of adolescent psychology we're ignoring: when an adult encounters a new social phenomenon, she has a context for it. But when a kid encounters a new phenomenon (never mind that nearly everything is new for them) THE PHENOMENON BECOMES THE CONTEXT.
And ...
So maybe that makes it easier for young adults to feel overwhelmed?
While at first I thought about the positives of banning social media for young children may outweigh the negatives, the more I considered my own childhood, the less I am convinced. As a depressed LGBTQ child with abusive parents, I found so much solace online with others like me. I honestly believe it saved my life. I appreciated that Max brought in that nuance of the algorithmic social media versus forums and places for open discussion. I'm not sure how effectively it can be regulated with our current lawmakers being so incompetent when it comes to technology, but I'm hopeful for a more nuanced approach in the future. I'm unsure of this present blanket ban, however, and I am wary of the bad faith arguments by conservatives.
Unfortunately, our current political system makes any regulation nearly impossible.
With all due respect,that was a different time on the internet,it’s changed for the worse even in the last 10 years.
Back then it was about connecting to and talking to people like you,or anyone,and it had a more positive undertone of actual social discourse.
Today it’s all about lashing out at what you hate,who you hate and trying to pick fights with whoever over whatever.
The only people that can really enjoy being online are the Verifieds and Influencers who line their pockets either dumping hate on a specific person or group to an audience that wants to hear it, or throwing around their wealth and fabulous lifestyles to an audience of Starbucks baristas making $12 an hour.
Social media is a business at this point,it always has been but nowadays it’s exceptionally clear that it’s not designed for positive engagement anymore.

@@oldworldpatriot8920I totally get you. My consideration of the current cesspool it's deteriorated into was honestly why my first instinct was to agree with a ban. However, Max bringing up the other point about places like discord not being about algorithms made me remember my own experience in forums way back when and honestly on discord within the last decade. If you find the places with - if not GOOD actors - at least neutral actors, you can still find those places of belonging! It may be hard for most kids to find those places, but kiddos who are desperate for connection have and will find those small corners of the internet where they will find the acceptance from strangers across the world that they can't get in their own home communities.
We went through this when I was a kid. CDs had to be labeled as explicit lyrics. Say no to drugs campaign etc.

Yes they want to control everyone, yet should hard working parents that need help housing and feeding their children they will not help increase minimum wages, they want to completely cut social safety net for food and housing assistance.
Is unhappiness rising in all English speaking countries, or English speaking countries where the Murdoch media has a broad footprint?
We often think of social media as Facebook and TikTok, but what about TH-cam, full of educational videos? Khan Academy has a model built around videos shared on TH-cam, and has a social aspect to comment on videos and gain answers to questions. Is this covered in the ban as well? Florida doesn't quite have a good track record on education, so does it make sense to block kids from viewing the outside world in a state that's rapidly dwindling the education system? Social media may be bad for kids, but I don't think a ban is the answer. If kids are going to be on social media, then they should be taught at a young age how to use it properly, like how some other countries do.
Former teacher here. TH-cam is an excellent resource so long as kids are steered to the right channels. For every genuine education channel, there any many others masquerading as educational that are full of misinformation.
Yeah, for every educational channel like Khan there are a bunch of channels that are nonsense. I remember a BBC news broadcast where kids had learned from TH-cam that the pyramids were built to harness lightning or something. They just aren’t equipped to tell legit sources from bot-made spam content.

That’s also tricky. Conservatives will want that too and to regulate it in their favor. There has to be push back.

This would be like holding the crews who build Highways responsible for people who use Cars to rob banks. We don't hold ATT or Verizon responsible if someone uses a telephone to make threats against someone else. We hold the individual responsible (but in that case, we have a way to identify the individual). What makes it difficult on the Internet is so many Social Media platforms allow instant and completely anonymous account creation (which fuels people to behave poorly, because they know being anonymous there's no way they'll ever made to be accountable). So that problem (the anonymity problem) is the thing we need to fix. "lack of accountability" means bad behavior will continue.
It's more like cigarettes or nicotine. Can nicotine, in small quantities, or tobacco in certain ways, have medicinal benefits? Yes.
Is the difference between medicinal harmful something the average user can easily get, and therefore is night impossible to regulate? Yes.
Is social media in general today highly harmful to all humans who use it? Yes.
Is social media social anymore? Not really. (Who remembers Facebook 12 years ago when it was just your friends post, and you could actually get to the bottom of the feed and there just...wasn't more to show you, and it said so?)
While there are issues with age verification for data storage, it is the case of somehow (much like tobacco and alcohol) there needs to be regulation, if for no other reason than kids safety and mental health.
It's a fact that kids these days don't have in person social skills, because they're never meeting in person.
Social media algorithms literally only show you the best of the best of the day, so imagine seeing 1000 people who aren't on TV but are getting thousands of people liking them, and having no friend you could hang out watching TV, having a sleep over, playing split screen video games, or going to the local mall with?
Social media in general, is horrific for humanity on several levels, and I absolutely support getting kids off, if not banning social media in general.
The conspiracies with the bridge collapse were my last straw with Twitter/X. Watching people who barely graduated high school telling structural engineers and maritime experts that they don't know what they are talking about was just crazy.
In the Netherlands there is a code for the right of children. This is a guide line for developing social media. The European Union is also working to specific protection for kids. The thing is that nobody is thinking of a ban. We are thinking about the rules, and the design. I think that’s a better path than banning.

I'm not saying blaming late stage capitalism for every woe is exceptable, but it has a definition. The drive to increase profit infinitely leads inevitably to monopoly, wealth and capital consolidation. Those who "win" in this landscape create an upper class. This happened in the gilded age for instance. The govt regulates to keep capitalism from destroying itself through this monopolistic consolidation of markets, but the wealth remains with the upper class who have a head start under new regulations to start consolidating the market once again. Once you reach a point that govt regulation can no longer provide a satisfactory solution to wealth, capital and market consolidation you have entered late stage capitalism. Its really not that hard to define. Weather you agree with it is up to you.

I’m a Canadian young person, our happiness declined because of rent, Quebec has different rent control standards, so our happiness is directly tied to our decreasing spending power year on year. Not much to do with media tbh

@@ananousous Yup! Grocery bills have been growing at a scary pace in Canada. Big grocery chains will claim "times are rough, what choice do we have?!"... aaaand then at the end of their fiscal year you'll inevitably hear them bragging of new record high profits.
When I had teenagers, I remember hearing them all doing their homework over discord while playing games and they really did collaborate. They got it done, and it lifted up the other ones in the group that weren’t quite as smart or whatever quite as focused so there is something to be said from hearing from your peers in terms of the content on social mediaand specifically the modality of discord and group collaboration on homework
My middle school students in FL tell me nobody uses their real age on social media anyway.
What Dr. Santos said about the time famine and the focus on grades as a job really resonates with me. I see this a lot with my 8th graders.
Probably true of a lot of adults too. Kids are pretty clever. If id is required they’ll ‘borrow’ an older sibling’s, friends or family members id.
In Eastern Europe - it's not about economic prospects (we have no choice but to work, we won't inherit anything, moreover, WE have to take care of our parents), but it's about for the first time in decades having a civic society, not being a russian colony and wanting to preserve that. Working collectively, coming together. And yeah, not having to worry about guns, medicare bills that can bancrupt you, free great quality education, low acceptance for tax avoidance - all of these also help! Also - we're just seeing all around us stuff getting done.

One of the best things I did in terms of my own contentment was to quit what I was doing and go out and explore the world. I had just turned 40. I had so much time freedom it was, at first, almost overwhelming. Until that point, much of my career life had been very structured. I started doing a lot of volunteer work. I read for pleasure. I talked more to as-yet-unknown friends. I feel I am one of the richest people I know even though I have very little money. I have enough. If I want to spend the day examining cloud formations, or the eddies in a stream, I can do so. I have worked jobs I never would have taken before, just to get the experience of what others had. So freeing!
Good, bad, or otherwise, it's not his job to decide how Florida's (or anyone elses) children are parented.

Does anyone else find the social media ban by a republican governor ironic? These are the same people that scream about a nanny state, wanting the government out of people's lives, and turn around and do exactly what they say they're against. Not just this, but this is just a most recent do as I say, not as I do scenario
After years and years hearing about how the “left wants to control the government and you” it sure is strange watching conservatives monopolize government regulation in all fashions outside guns.
I have very mixed feelings on this. I agree with a lot of the arguments you two gave about why it may be a good thing. It could help protect them from sexual predators as well. My main argument against a ban like this, is social media is something that members of the LGBTQIA community rely on to help them find acceptance and find their "tribe", which can sometimes be the only thing keeping them from unaliving themselves. It is very risky IRL to approach people at school etc, when you don't know how they are going to react. They could be rejected or even bullied, outed before they are ready, etc. I strongly suspect that this is the real reason Ron DeSanctus wants to do this ban.

I come from a marginalized group, too, so I understand your view. But I'm just not so sure it's enough of a justification anymore for what social media is doing to all of us.

I respectfully disagree. Sometimes people you might hate do come up with good ideas. Not saying if this is one or not, but dismissing legislation without actually reading it is a major problem on both sides of the aisle.
@@savannah115 I pay attention to what these folks do and why they do it. Their instincts and activities are nefarious almost always. They hate social media because they get shit for spreading misinformation and hate speech also young people tend to hate their guts because of their policies so they want to curate the information young people have access to. It’s as clear as the nose on your face. Bad faith at infinitum.
A sense of being able to do what i consider my purpose, being in the zone, a daily thank diary, sitting in the sun, realistic objectives. I dont aim for "happiness" as much as a deep sense of contentment and satisfaction.

Bravo. I get so tired of hearing then (and others of the same disposition) talk about the "studies" that support them without naming them. I am familiar, for example, with the National Academy of Sciences 2024 Social Media and Adolescent Health report that concludes that one can't draw a sweeping conclusion from the data available - the idea that there's some clear connection between social media use and mental health problem isn't supported. Do these two really have evidence harder than that? Name it!
As an educator of 20 years, I have seen the transformation (degradation) of the classroom environment with cell phones being allowed. An already strained attention span has been further eroded by a distraction teachers cannot compete with without support for curtailing their use in school.
In school is one thing, your personal time is another.
Max's comment about 20min in about how "anything that blows up on Social Media is almost instantly co-opted to "prove someones bubble-narrative".. is one of my worst frustrations right now with the Internet. Nobody seems to ever take anything at face-value. An event happens,. and immediately people are looking for some "underground explanation". It's insane and idiotic.

This has honestly been great for my screen time habits. I became so frustrated with this--and the impossibility of easily finding neutral sources on basically anything--that I hardly ever randomly spend time on the internet anymore. I haven't been on most of my social media accounts in months. I'm just so sick of it all so I went back to spending my free time in ways I did as a kid back in the dial up days...reading, crafting, boardgames. It's been AMAZING, I swear my anxiety disorder is under better control now and my general mental health is exponentially improved.
I feel like Favreau lacks conviction. When Offline was actually drilling down to getting off our devices, a real solution, they abandoned it because all their sponsors and their business model depends on not fixing the problem. And they have all gotten really comfortable in their positions. Lovett plays to crowds of Facebook employees and loves the money and fame. Tommy is on with click-bait machine Brian Tyler Cohen. Dan is a political genius, but idk what his convictions are. I think these guys have lost their edge. Get it back! People are dying out here!

I’ve worked with kids for 40 yrs. Children who play and learn how to entertain themselves find their passions and gain confidence. Both alone and group play is so important, but hours of tv and gaming robs them of important interactions. I think by age 10 kids are who they will be in life. So let them play and explore the real world for ten years at least.
Lately I've been watching content from before cell phones and it's astounding how differently everyone seemed to be engaged with each other. It seems as if social activities nowadays are merely diversions until we all can bury ourselves in our phone

Personally, I struggle with the concept of happiness. I always knew that what made my life worthwhile were the relationships with other people.
The person I care about most decided I wasn’t the right kind of happy for him and tossed me aside. Then my therapists told me that relationships with others could not be part of what makes me happy. They said anything with an external aspect could not be considered happiness. Now, I’m so self-focused, I feel trapped.
I’m also of the generation where job is for paycheck. Not happiness. Not purpose. Not fulfillment. Paycheck. With my remote work schedule, I actually like the people I work with better than I did when I had to spend the majority of my time with them.
After the past several years, I’ve come to feel that life as a human isn’t worth the pain it inevitably contains.
I have a 13 yo son and I’ve told him the grades mean nothing to me. I will only focus on written behaviour portion of his report card, which explains initiative, collaboration, independence, team work etc

In an environment where books are being banned and burned, more and more rights are taken away from parents.
I am most encouraged that there are so many available parental rights. The government wants to be in our bedrooms, deciding on women's rights to decide on their kids' rules.
On the other hand, parents must exercise the tools available to use.

Do we really want a society where showing your ID is required for every online interaction? That sounds like where we are headed. White conservative evangelicals are the biggest nanny state promoters.
I tried to get my kids outside. It ended up with an older kid trying to really hurt my son. When I called the cops, the officer didn't care. One of them told me if I didn't want my children to be shot to keep them inside.

You make a valid point; society is definitely not set up to support kids’ independence anymore.
The way we processed information on an evolutionarily scale has gone from what we heard through word of mouth be that through the pulpit, gossip, poetry, plays, story telling and finally visually through paintings ( art ) and trinkets of perceived value, to an INSTANT OVER LOAD of information that over whelms our brains, which is further compounded by the instant comparison of the other.
Those that substitute touch and eye contact in favour of the digital nanny, are gearing up their off-spring, into a world of hurt.

As a retired teacher, the best thing that can happen in schools is a total cell phone ban. If you have never taught, you have no idea.
As a student in the years of cell phones, we do have an idea. Dont appreciate the tone that we don’t know.
💯 It is absolutely insane imho. Every school I go to except the friggin JAIL gives kids the right to blatantly disregard a teacher and tune out on their phone. I’ve talked to admin and they all don’t want the fight…some have told me it’s the one precious thing kids own and so it wouldn’t be ethically ok to take them. Many admin make rules but don’t enforce at all and it’s even worse that way…completely undermining their own authority and teachers.
I’m as dumbfounded by it as I was when I did a HS exchange in Spain and kids were being served alcohol and smoking cigs in the cafeteria. But those kids were on point in class!

I was a straight A student suspended for a couple days for checking the time on my phone in a stairway during lunch to see when my next class started. Total bans can also hurt students.

Placing more emphasis on the happiness & wellbeing of children has to happen in step with adjustments to social media access.
I did some informal experimenting where I eliminated work outside class for my 8th-graders, with explicit information about getting more sleep or spending more time with friends & family. Almost without exception, the time they “saved” went back into more time on their phones (or in a few cases, late-night Fortnite binges that were going to happen anyway but could now start somewhat earlier).
Personally, my go to for genuine conversation starter is to answer honestly to the question: How are you. Answering anything different than the standard "good and you" shakes the conversation and usually can create the space for honest discussion.
As a québecer, i have to say, i get much more support from my francophone networks. Internet tools use in French is a source of identity construction for my teen son. I also wonder if social media is the problem or if its how you guys use it.

Definitely being better myself is helping everybody in the long run. If I can find peace with who I am at the same time that I'm giving of myself to everybody else then it'll work cuz I've always been a giver but it's not until I started being less hateful to myself that I started to be able to love life and recognize that what I'm doing is good. Instead of me feeling like I am just a worthless piece of trash. Even when I was doing stuff for people I just thought that I was hiding that part of me. Now I don't feel like I'm worthless anymore

Sure, social media is a big factor, but IMO bigger factors affecting happiness among Millennials are:
- Being raised by Boomers, most of whom are emotionally immature/ negligent. Boomers were neglected emotionally too, but they had incredible economic opportunities and security that helped them feel more stable. Millennials don't have that.
- Wage Suppression
- Student Loan Debt
- High Cost of Living
Also, it's easy for older generations to engage in charity work or to foster community because most aren't just scraping by and have the time and resources to spend. When you're working long hours for low wages, with little opportunity to ever own a home or start a family, of course you're going to be more focused on your own personal situation.

I know this will sound cynical but when you said 4:35, we have to focus on children's happiness, what that translates to in American culture particularly among the parental units is and will always be what they can buy, schedule, satisfy, coat and color at any cost to make the little darling happy.I have a half dozen friends with 18 year olds. I have watched these kids grow up and I have been invited to the parties and ceremonies ect.ect and the level of fawning, preparing, spending to make any and every basic milestone in their lives worthy of a bigger celebration than the last one .With dozens of adults fawning and photographing and recording it all only to have the child pout and give everyone, but especially the parents, shade because some thing was just not what they really expected. It's sad as well as disgusting and annoying and I for one have gone to my last 18 yo birthday party last night. The kids who are currently 15 -20 are in real crisis. It is not going well for them and they will be coming of age in a very real and quickly changing world..

Just polled some of my high school students, they said, "Please ban me from social media!" I was mildly suprised by the response, but also not really. Teenagers and parents alike would appreciate some restrictions. I propose a third party federal verification website, that could be run by the Social Security Administration or even the IRS or some other entity that already has already has all our information, that websites kick you over to for verification and then you're kicked back to whatever website you're trying to sign up for. This could work for social media, porn, online alcohol purchases, etc. Seems simple enough to me.
I found the secret to my happiness is spending more time with dogs. I now walk dogs as a large part of my gig life instead of sitting in front of a screen doing tech work.
Did that cheerfulness study control for wealth? If you take a happy poor kid with limited prospects, vs a sad rich kids with lots of connections, who does better in the end?
After all, didn't that delayed gratification study also have a wealth problem? Ie, wealthy kids grow up in an environment which allows them to make long term investments, whereas poor kids have to take rewards now in order to survive.
Both groups are correct. While I personally don't care if a company has my real name, address, and age, many people do and that isn't anything to downplay. At the same time, the studies about how social media negatively impacts kids mental health are compelling. The easier way to verify age that still keeps privacy would be to have one-time access cards sold at all convenience stores that require, by law, to only sell to people who are 18 or older. We can work out details that on how long these cards work, whether you can multiple accounts on the same platform associated with a single card, etc but it gets us most of the way there.
My preferred method is real-id for accessing these places but I won't fight too hard for it.
The dumbest take I've heard is that you have to make bridges safer so this doesn't happen in the future. A ship of that size with that load would do damage even if it crashed into a cliff of pure granit, how do they think they can make *any* bridge withstand something like that. 🤦🏼♀️

Excellent discussion. You mention thar the mre self-focused you are; the less happy you are. Also that the under 30 tend to be more focused on "me/I." As a boomer, I'll point out that that latter sentiment has been voiced/studied since, at least, the '70s. That's only become more prevalent with each generation. Why? Internet or something else?

Jon, do you use the internet to look up local events or small businesses nearby? I don't know what it's like in the USA but in the UK most small businesses and local groups (board game groups, sports team meetings, etc.) seem to put that information on Instagram (where you need to be logged in to an account in order to see the text attached to the pictures), X and/or Facebook, if they even have a website they don't update it. I guess if businesses realise some of their potential users can no longer access that information they'll slowly change their way of doing things but I don't think your assertion at around minute 8 that you can find any useful information on the internet without needing to use a social media or similar platform is entirely correct.

Shared decisionmaking about quality of life+priorities within a healthy noncoercive process makes Workers happy. Comparatively, to public+govt sector, private companies+nonprofits w/ 20+ employees and no union are most unhappy=no democracy in workplace.
A few decades ago, my parents were studying to get into university in China. They knew what they learned was already outdated, but alas, the obfuscation of the Huko system meant that they had to get a master's degree, or else return to the provinces.
When I arrived, I was somewhat confused to see local educators praise the Chinese system for its strengths. Sure, it turned out people who were great at notetaking and memorizing, but, well, y'know.

I've been pelted with the saying "you can't help/care for/love others if you can't even help/care for/love yourself" so much growing up, and still encounter it today. It's one of the things that made the final push away from religion, but the feeling of hopelessness it ingrained remains.
Kids brains aren't fully developed at 14 or 16 either, so I don't know why it would be okay to give them social media accounts then.
I mean we give them driver’s licenses at 16. At some point they have to grow up.

I don’t like social media. There is so much miss communication. I wouldn’t let my kids do social media. I think the governance should be on the companies and not private citizens or doing the job of a parent though. There is so many bogus blogs and websites just as bad as social media. They like the connection and grouping that social media provides and they will do this. Then are you going to start prosecuting kids for breaking this law? It’s not realistic.

Software developer who works for the DOD fully remote here. Doesn’t pay at the top of the scale for what I do, but it’s a comfortable life and the work life balance and faith in job security more than makes it worth it

Discord and forums can be incredibly dangerous as well. Discord is where a lot of predators start grooming kids. Plenty of examples of it from streamers.

I think that's literally the point. We literally had a twenty-sonething give up military secrets on Discord. The very nature of these insular communities that social media will inevitably run the risk of radicalization and getting bad info. But so is living in a small town or a neighbourhood that's largely left or right. I dunno. I feel like people trying to regulate a natural issue with interacting with people. Some of them are idiots that will give you bad ideas. Oh well. Humans are going to human.

Part of the solution is media literacy, sex education and identity verification. If kids could be taught about the dangers of places like discord, it would be a lot safer. Much like I was taught not to play in the street or to take candy from strangers. No one tried to ban candy or streets. Bans almost never work and are almost always reactionary. Education and regulation works. I like the idea of the FLA law in principle. I don't like depending on a third-party to do verification.
I believe we have reached a point where our digital lives require a governmental digital verification. If only we had an entire industry of people convinced that technology can move society forward...

There's a big gap between saying cheerfulness actually predicts success more than academics. There are a lot if variables there. Cheerfulness isn't going to get you into med school.

Late capitalism isn’t a conspiracy though, it’s an analytical tool. It’s not about people coordinating, it’s about a system or structure that incentivizes behaviors.
The point is, sure you can make bridges preventative of this type of collapse but the incentive to cut corners for profit maximization is still in place and will be manifest elsewhere. Even if we solve THIS particular instance.
That analysis doesn’t take away from what can we do right now to solve the problem.
