      Glad my video helped you in getting your clock going. I figure if the "experts" can do it, so can I.... so I just tear into them and figure the problem out. 98% of the time, I get good results, from a simple cleaning.

    Removed and cleaned the speedometer on my 66 Dodge Coronet last year. Pulled out the cable and applied some graphite. Super easy to keep those old parts in service.

      Graphite will gum up if the humidity gets high. Silicone works well.

    I heard that it was relatively easy. But that is fairly easy to alter an Odometer. We also cannot be cetain of how far we have come, in this one, so we're not too sure of how much more usage we're going to have2 expect out of this one either. This Life has a way of showing us that our Bodies are just the Soul -driving another car. You don't know you'll be definitely be able to get another one ! Not a good idea to stint on the old Preventative maintenance. That's nearly 2 metaphores for one comment section. .and all free ! Cheers

    The safer way of resetting the odometer instead of prying the old plastic and gears apart is to start at the far left digit and set it where you want. Then roll the next digit to the right until it comes to a stop. At the point you will be able to move the bar one position. Keep doing that until the bar and the digit are in the correct spots. Then move to the next digit and repeat the process, and so on. It's safer than risking breaking the gears, plastic, ect. For a seven digit odometer, it will only take about 5-10 minutes.

    Great video truly educational for older vehicles. Quick question, if someone wanted to appear as if little to no miles have been added to a vehicle, could you just take out the original odomete/speedometer reader and put a different one in there and replace it back to the original one before you give the lease vehicle back....? Or if you are selling the vehicle to carmax, etc....?

    do the little gears have to be in a certain position between the numbers when at rest/ reassembling it ? if not when tab comes around might jam whole thing at any number ?
    only happens if you take wheels
    off shaft the little gears fall out . Or maybe it works by design no matter how they are positioned rotationally in U slots ( obviously right way around)

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  ปีที่แล้ว

      The gears need to be so all the numbers line up and line up with the opening in the speedo for the odometer. The gears will be in the correct spot as long as the numbers are all lined up evenly.

    I’m looking at a ‘92 Accord right now. It’s in pristine condition, no rust, clean interior. Haven’t visited the guy yet but from the pictures the Odometer says 38900km. My concern is that the Odometer has been rolled back. The numbers don’t line up, but the guy claims the car is for his elderly father, and it is in immaculate condition judging from the photos. I’m conflicted.
    Any tips or advice for when I go to see it in person? The guy is asking for $9000 CAD (~$7000 USD) by the way, but i’ll talk him down close to $4000 CAD (~$3000 USD) since it hasn’t been sold in the 2 months it’s been posted.

      Look at the ware on the pedals, drivers seat and carpet around the pedals. Also remove the oil cap to see if the engine is clean or full of sludge. Low milage at the end of the day docent mean a thing if the car was not maintained. Often low milage older cars were used for short trips..... a mile here a mile there is super hard on cars. I find older cars with ultra low miles, can have more issues then a well maintained high milage car.....

    • @mkobd
      @mkobd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OldCarAlley Thanks for your reply, I arranged a meeting with the guy and checked the stuff you
      mentioned, I suspect that the dash was rolled back, lots of wear on the pedals and carpet underneath the winter mats. Good looks 👍

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mkobd Sometime the speedos break, and get replaced with salvage yard ones, that may have lower miles showing. I always adjust the milage on a replacement, to what the original stated. Always look at the car in general. Often the cleanness will reflect mechanical care too. Often filthy cars were not maintained as well as clean cars....
      From my experience in dealing with older cars. To me milage on the odometer is the last ting I look at, as often older low miles cars, have more issues than high miles older cars. The low miles ones were often short tripped..... that's the worse thing you can do to a car.

  • @johngrady8541
    @johngrady8541 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    thank you for answer , say when all zeros the tab that will hit the little pinion when it comes around to turn the next wheel 1 number hits the little gear in the U slot for a short time , enough to go one number .
    But when you assemble it all alighbed to 0 or any number the little tab is at about 3 o click position inside the member wheel , do not touching anything . when it turns maybe 270 degrees or whatever it engages , but if that is not sitting just right it might jam ? maybe put together with it in certain position ? or maybe does not matter ? if you force it like in the video you might lose that yet it seeks to work ? try it with drill and allen cut off fits drive make sure it works not just first drum ? seems to work with gear in U left just anywhere but that seems wrong ?

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  ปีที่แล้ว

      I never remove the digits, I only snap them around. When the odometer is out, they have enough "play" in them to allow them to be moved easer. I have never damaged an odometer doing it the way I show in the video. I have done hundreds over the years. I like replacement odometers to show the actual miles on the old car that is getting a replacement, so I always reset them to be correct. I do them for friends that work on old cars also.

    I had a 1984 Camaro years ago and changed my speedometer and when I tried to do this the numbers got a silver line through them. Later reading my owners manual it stated that this was a tamper resistant feature. I guess this started in the late 70's early 80's?
