Thanks Shane and Melody for showcasing my hometown of Mountain City. Thanks also for the video on Copperhead Road! We are very proud of our town and history. Mountain City has seen a lot changes since the 1800s. The revitalization efforts downtown will help boost tourism. The town will host the upcoming Sunflower Festival in July. The Long Journey Home will also focus on the musicians/heritage throughout Johnson County. I hope this video makes it far and wide to viewers. It will greatly give more exposure to our slice of "Mayberry".😀😊 Thanks y'all!
Hello. I just found your channel and I instantly subscribed. Thank you putting out these videos. Have you ever visited Green Bank, WV? It's supposed to be a town that bans wifi and people rely on landlines and payphones.
What a great show of a city full of people who care about their community. That general store owner really has it together. I hope he makes a killing there. When I drive back down to Florida next late fall, I am going to do a detour and see this wonderful small Appalachia town. Thanks you both, and you both make good angles. LOL
Good job! Thanks for visiting. I am one of the Mural artists. There are several more In town and an Art Center on the street near FSB and Heritage Hall. Come back anytime.
That is a very nice little community. That old Pharmacy/store would be so fun to redo and open, like you guys hope they are remodeling for that exact reason.
I so enjoyed this.i used to come to mtn city alot.i still come up from time to time to the grocery store at pioneer village,,to get a certain brand of country ham that's sugar cured.ty for the trip to mtn city
WOw! I didn't realize that one could go through Mountain City, TN to reach WV. Well, I learned something new!! Mountain City is the route I traveled from Johnson City to Boone, NC. It is a beautiful little town with friendly people. When traveling towards Boone, NC, you will pass a beautiful Watauga Lake where the water is green. The food in the restaurant is great! However, it has been years since I traveled that route so I don't know if the lake restaurant is still open. You have produced a wonderful video Shane and Melody. Thank you so very much!! Be safe in your travels.
Thank you, you’re too sweet. I was just saying earlier that I was kicking myself in the pants for forgetting to put in the video from the restaurant. We went to a place called Suba’s and it was amazing.

Thank you for taking me with on your tour of Mountain City , Tennessee . It's the next best thing to actually being there. I think BOTH of you are Angel's . Looking forward to your next journey in the Appalachias .
I have deep roots in Johnson County, Tennessee on my mother's side. We would go visit our great-grandparents while my brother and I were growing up, and once I got into my family history, I have been making my own trips there. I was just up visiting this past fall. We love Mountain City. It's beautiful country!
You missed out on one of the best restaurants in the Appalachian mountains. Suba's restaurant in Mountain City. The food is great, but the desserts are absolutely incredible!!! You need to plan another trip back just to eat at Suba's!
We actually did eat at Suba’s and it was amazing. I forgot to put it in this original video so we posted it as a short on this channel - the dessert were incredible.
During the 14 1/2 years Barbara and I resided in either Johnson City or Cleveland, we often motorcycled to and through there. Usually, we'd head south from there through Doe Valley and surrounding areas. MISS both HER and the equally beautiful mountain roads
Sure was nice to see my old HIgh School. At that stoplight where you start and end at used to be Blackburn's Market--family owned grocery store. I remember going to the Pharmacy there a lot. Also, there used to be a Dollar General downtown too. On the other side of town when I lived there towards NC we only had a Pizza Hut, a Skating Rink, and a convenient store. It has grown up so much. Hi y'all, really have been enjoying your vids! I came up there in 2009 to the little town of Gray. Stayed there fory job til 2015 when health reasons wouldn't allow me to work anymore, came back to Florida., I love the Way you find all the small town life that I missed when I was there, maybe one day y'all could do one on Gray? We hope to get one of Gray, it is a little tricky because it seems to get busier and busier there because of the housing boom I guess but we want to do it
I have been to Elizabethton, but not Mountain City. I enjoyed this. I especially enjoyed the two churches. I was worried you weren't going to show them to us after driving by them the first time. The clouds near the end were beautiful too.
My 5th Great Grandfather is buried there in Mountain City, 1799 to 1875. He is buried in the Phillippi Cemetery. We knew we were from back east but in the early 1900s our family moved out to California. I just learned about our heritage last year doing the ancestry website. They lived in that area and in Ashe county North Carolina. Many are buried in various graves in and around Ashe County.
I used to go there just about every summer growing up, as our family farm was there... it was just up the road and around the bend from the former iron Mountain Stoneware...
I like Mountain City; it looks more cared for than Johnson City. I like the way the hills are around the town. I will move in a few years, and this town seems possible. Thanks for the tour.
Thank you so much for making this video. My Dad grew up in Mountain City. Precious video. In fact, this video shows the location where my parents first met! ❤️👏
I just came across this video, and enjoyed it. I'm from Butler TN. In Johnson county just down the road from Mountain City, just so yall know, the people that own the pharmacy building are working on it to restore it back to it's original look and plan to open it up. When y'all come back up you should check out Butler known as the town that wouldn't drown, and Shady Valley and all the cranberry boggs, and Backbone Rock, Laura Bloomery where the host the old Fiddlers Convention and Gentry Falls, and of course Trade and the Grist Meal. Also there is an old school just down the road from Copperhead Holler Rd. That has been converted into a Winery.
Well you're right about Mtn City being a slice of Mayberry. Looks like its going to give Big Stone Gap a run for its money for the Mayberry title. Excellent video you two. You can really tell you all love being with each other.
A wonderful good hearted layed back town in the south.I have some relatives from there.I am from Pennsylvania and my folks came up here for work.I visited Mountain City TN in 1992 for three days and it was a dreat place to visit.
Back in '99, we stopped at this town way out in the west of Virginia where people said we could get gas. It was on a dirt road and was just a cabin with one gas pump real close to the road. It was after dark, so we knocked on the door and the guy came out and put gas in my car. It was near Hagen Holler. One of those one road and no Stop Sign places where people still rode horses to town.
You guys make a great team doing this I love it I feel blessed listening to you guys and I got to say Melody I love the way you talk you're awesome all you guys are
@@realappalachia we actually stopped by in Nutter Fort WV one year driving back from South Carolina because we saw a Harley Davidson store from the highway. Is that considered Appalachia?
Mountain City used to be a busy place on Friday nights. Everyone would get paid and go to town. The old stores sold to new folks and main street shops always close on Saturdays at noon and closed on Sundays. Doe Mountain Recreation Area off of HWY 67 on Harbin Hill Road is open on weekends. Off road ATV and hiking. Climb the fire tower, archery, hatchet throwing, mountain biking. Lots of interesting homes, farms and churches all over the county.
Hi Melody Shane great video. My granddaughter’s great grandma and grandpa are from around these areas near Johnson City and surrounding areas. Last name was Johnson. You have to go back to Mountain City and eat in one of our favorite restaurants, Suba’s restaurant. Plan to leave room for dessert. Their story is great, check out their Facebook page!
We actually did eat at Suba’s and it was amazing. I forgot to put it in this original video so we posted it as a short on this channel the next day- the dessert were incredible.
I went to church hill high school in the late 1970's. Usually the johnson county longhorns had to play us in the 1 st round of high school AA football playoffs.
