"The eviction moratorium will make landlords homeless" is the same ass-backwards logic as "universal basic income will make millionaires destitute". To those who have everything, only having a bit seems apocalyptic, I guess.
Neither moratorium nor universal health care is anything close to equality. Like, it's astronomically far from equality. What feels like oppression here is, the condition of survival for the oppressed. @@gabrielantunez7642 Because there are *six times* as many empty houses as there are homeless people? DD: Why are we letting landlords gatekeep home ownership when people's literal lives and well-being depends on having shelter?
Not all are bad or lack a conscious to this comical extent. There's a black family on TH-cam that were making plans to start their own tiny home community. They weren't trust fund kids, but adults who worked multiple jobs between them to pay off their debts and build family wealth while they lived in a tiny home. Most black families are in favor of generational wealth and passive income since we were kept out of it for so long. Eventually they bought some land to plan their own tiny house community and bought another house to flip. If you talk to a few black men and women, some of the commentary around wealth building on this end can come across as gatekeeping by white liberals that are still more privileged than they are individually.
@@normandy2501 Coming up from a background of little less (my parents worked way to many hours for me to feel comfortable saying nothing), I think the weird thing about the starting from the bottom race to the top idea is that we, as like most people, struggle to find ways to bring up others with us. Like there are plenty of rags-to-riches stories, and then on top you give some small fraction as charity, but it's actually strange to others to advocate for making less money once you are doing alright and the threat of losing your job isn't an nightmare scenario, and instead focus on helping out those you interact with. Like not just building a business, but building a cooperative. Not just renting out homes, but building a community land trust and selling homes to others affordably. Growing a garden and getting friends and such together to gather and can food to save everyone some money. Butchering a cow together (either manually or splitting the bill with a butcher you like). I don't know, people at least around me just get weird about it. Like, the idea of working comfortably and living a pretty good life with a healthy community of other people isn't nearly as satisfying of an idea as being super wealthy and living far enough away from the less fortunate and just not have to deal with that anymore.
@@Waitwhat469 I like that idea, but it seems to get shot down depending on how you bring it up. I'm sure if the biggest streamers and video essayist pooled their disposable income, something like that could be achievable in multiple areas. But they aren't nessisarily obligated to do so, even if it can help prove the points they make about what things could look like if the budgets were realigned. There was even one man who went out of his way to build tiny homes for the homeless in California so they would have shelter and an address for the sake of job applications if they were able to find employment. Unfortunately the project was protested against before he was even able to purchase a lot in the city to move the homes to. It was something at least.

Even if the landlords evict people, if enough people are struggling to pay rent, the rent won't get paid regardless. What difference does it make, then?
Waiting for all the Forbes and CNBC articles about how poor people are ruining the real estate market and hurting landlords by filing for bankruptcy because landlords are trying to extract up to 18 months of backrent from people with no jobs.
And it's not like they're going to let the people they evict off the hook for back rent, they'll sell the debt to collection agencies and these people will be dealing with the consequences years/decades/the rest of their lives. The landlords will get to write it off their taxes.
This is so tragic, I had no idea. Is there a foundation I can donate to in order to help these poor landlords? As a non homeowner I am currently rolling in money thanks to eviction moratoriums and want to help :(
It's really nice to have someone with a platform who makes me feel a little more understood and a less crazy while I watch the world blow up in real time and in an entirely preventable way.
i love the little knife-twisting moments you do whenever you see something especially stupid. the bit about perhaps getting rid of all costs for everything was great
I enjoy paying rent and I feel that this is a worthwhile endeavour. The act itself is filled with meaning and purpose. I am happy knowing that if I pay an ever increasing amount of money every month for the next 15 years I can still lose my home. This fills me with joy and contentment. There is nothing exploitative in this arrangement. Thank god I’m alive to make money for corporations.
As close as this article is to absolute self-parody, he does mention one really important point: Private equity firms are taking advantage of the vulnerable position of small landlords and buying up properties like never before. This drives up the cost of housing, and concentrates power into fewer and fewer hands.
To all struggling landlords: Have you tried getting a job? There's plenty of openings, after all and you clearly need money for fuel for your private jet that your tenants can't provide you. So there has to be alternative ways to make money for your private jet fuel. Look for them, even if it's just $7.25 an hour at a McDonald's, at least you'll be able to be proud at finally becoming an essential worker like the tenants that can't pay you.
You know what'd save all these poor suffering landlords? They should rent houses from other landlords! Stupid landlords _owning their own houses!_ They should have joined the _privileged renter class_ instead!

I'm so pissed about landlords rn. Our family owns the trailer me and my fiancee live in (it's like 8 feet by 35 feet and pretty broken, I've done what I can but I'll be real it's shitty, worth 1k at most) but we STILL have to pay rent to a landlord: the owner of a small field where a ton of these teeny trailers are stuffed into. And because we're teeeechnically occupying the land BUT own the building, we're responsible for all repairs, and have to maintain the land (ie if you don't mow it you'll get a fine), can't have any pets, exterior decorations, or 'distractions' (painting the trailer something other than grey or grey-blue) because the landlord is a weirdo and "doesn't want hippie shit making us look bad." Dude, it's a gravel road with dying grass in the middle, anything we do would make it look better than this. And since it's technically outside of city limits (across one tiny bridge like 100 feet away) sound ordinances don't affect us, no curfew; so no matter the time people can party, shoot fireworks, make donuts in their trucks, etc. Just... why
The fear that landlords have of being proletarianized should tell them what the state of being working class is in the world but it doesn’t and even if they cared about the working class it wouldn’t matter due to the nature of class society
It's the basic motivation for all work in a class society. The carrot and stick: The 'american dream' promises hard work will be rewarded - and the lower classes serve as a constant reminder of what happens to those who slack off. So get to work and make some money for your boss's boss's boss.

Huh, that's funny. My landlord was struggling not getting rent after my building was condemned as unsafe and the fire department evacuated us because he hadn't done necessary maintenance work on a support column in the basement in a full decade. He then claimed that, because resident building keys allowed basement access, we were liable for any necessary repairs. He then revealed he had no insurance. He then threw out tenant possessions while we were legally barred from accessing the building. He then demanded rent from us. (Really.) Anyway, then I saw some old friends and didn't even have the best landlord story from *that month.*
There was a landlord here in my city who just ditched his crappy complex and moved out of state in protest of the moratorium. All the utilities were shut off for the tenants, ceilings started caving in, mold took over, like this went on for about a year. When the local news reached out to him, he said he had no cash to pay for any repairs or utilities. That's funny because he had plenty of money to donate to our governor's campaign fund only a few months ago.
I had to look up when you said "It is tragic...." as you were reading the article just to make sure you weren't editorializing....................Oh My F! That line was actually in the article! I was able to purchase "new goods" or rather a new good yesterday because of all the new "free" money I have on account of not paying rent, except that I did continue to pay rent and took it out of my food budget, which leads me back to my "new good", well, new to me as I got it at a second-hand store, which was a pair of shorts for 5$, which I really needed on account of the fact that I've lost 40 pounds since the beginning of the pandemic; but, at least the important things are taken care of, like keeping my landlord from losing profit from it's corporate portfolio.
I don’t know if this is rude to point out, but it has been really great watching you get better at your makeup over the last few months. Just wanted to let you know we see you growing
With all due respect Julio, I can't eat respect or self-worth. For that matter, renting is something that can be a bit stigmatized anyway since renters make people money for nothing and even conservatives have been pointing this out for my entire life.

Btw this is all off topic, so since we're here, nice makeup! You came a long way!
I've heard of a solution the French came up with that could help in a situation like this. As a bonus it also means they'll never need to pay taxes again.

Neither moratorium nor universal health care is anything close to equality. Like, it's astronomically far from equality. back when I was 10 I dreamed of owning houses so I could make a passive income and live without working. Then I grew a conscious.

And when those renters finally can afford it, they'll go right back to paying. And tenant turnover had to cost a lot too.
And it's not like they're going to let the people they evict off the hook for back rent, they'll sell the debt to collection agencies and these people will be dealing with the consequences years/decades/the rest of their lives. The landlords will get to write it off their taxes.

As close as this article is to absolute self-parody, he does mention one really important point: Private equity firms are taking advantage of the vulnerable position of small landlords and buying up properties like never before. To all struggling landlords: Have you tried getting a job? There's plenty of openings, after all and you clearly need money for fuel for your private jet that your tenants can't provide you. So there has to be alternative ways to make money for your private jet fuel. Just... why
The sad music in the background really tugs on the old heart strings. Almost crying the whole video 4 landlord's. Someone start a go fund me 4 em!
