"Do you want a family?" "Where do you see yourself living in 10 years?" I figured out I loved you before I figured out who I wanted to be. Why can't I love him like we're 18 again? When all it meant to be in love was helping each other study, watching hours of old cartoons, walking to the gas station in the freezing cold for a slushie? How do I love like this, when I have to choose between you and the career, the life, the passions I have wanted since before I met you? I used to think "I am unsure about everything except for you" but that's not even true anymore. I'm not ready for this. Why can't I love you like we're kids again?
was in a 4 year like you from 16-20 yrs old and had similar feelings. I'm 23 now and honestly in hind sight I'm grateful it ended when it did. She wasn't the one and deep down I knew that all along but its the comfort and companionship of someone who knows you so well that it feels almost impossible to split up. It was hard thats for sure but clarity settled in pretty fast. I'm telling you from my experience, and quoting from the David Foster Wallace mini-bio movie "The End Of the Tour" in paraphrase, when it comes to marriage you have to be able to to picture yourself with that person in EVERY conceivable situation, no matter how great or terrible it is. EVERY single thing you go through you have to be sure that is the person you want by your side through all of it. That hit me hard and it hasn't left my head since I first heard it. I'm still waiting for the one, hope this helps.

It's hard, hard to remember that I am so very young yet. Hoping the best for you and that someone comes around that can be the one in every situation and high and low.
@@6randpa69 I had the exact thought. Its terrifying to say the least.. For me it was actually a mutual understanding after talking through it. We remembered what we had- the love, the laughs, the heartbreak and joy through it all. And most importantly, a mutual respect for each other's privacy. We both understood that there were things we knew about one another that we had never told anyone before and its almost like a sacred bond that should be kept between first loves. I've kept my end of the deal, and I hope she's kept hers. There's really nothing like that first serious relationship (it was for me at least) and the time we spent still holds a special place in my heart and I don't regret a thing. I've learned so much about myself and I have grown and matured greatly because of that. I was weak and dependent before that but making a decision like that takes adult strength and it really develops you mentally. I remember before that, I pretty much fell head over heels for any girl that gave me an ounce of attention but now I know what I'm looking for and I have the strength to back off if I know there isn't a future with someone. I'm rambling but really the point is that you have to have a little faith in that person, don't forget that you know their heart, and you have to trust they will take whatever secrets you've told them to their grave. But it's definitely important to end on good terms, that way theres no malice between either of you and no reason to dig up old dirt. And like you said you're young, just like me- we have so much life ahead that its kind of crazy to commit to one person you met before your brain even developed fully. Trust me being single at this age is empowering and being able to stand on your own two feet without having to rely on someone as an emotional crutch is something you have to experience for yourself because I can't find the words to describe it. If they aren't the one, don't drag it out longer than it has to. It's really hard and its gonna suck for a bit but push through and don't backslide. It's truly the first step toward the rest of your life.

I have a bad habit for making what my family and others in my life think is best for me what I think I want, ignoring what I actually want. He can be perfect in every way, but not perfect for me is something I have to keep telling myself; I can have the ripest, sweetest, most perfect peach, but it's not helpful if I'm making spaghetti. There's just so many things I want that I need to sift through. I'm taking a step back to just see how I really feel-- I'm stressed out by a million other things and need to make sure I'm not just freaking out because of stress. I really appreciate your words and your experience

Would talk all day and all late into the night about our interests, had similar humor. We shared poetry and would talk about what our favorite songs meant to us.
