    RIP
    I first met Roy Haynes decades ago in Long Island at Sonny's Place. It was an open jam session and Roy was hanging out, as he lived nearby. Because of this when it was my turn to sit in, I had to play drums while Roy watched from the audience! Talk about utterly frightening and intimidating! Somehow I was able to relax and get through it! LOL After this chance introduction I made a point of seeing him perform every summer at the annual Jazz Mobile Grant's Tomb concert series in Harlem. I remember one particular event there, where Roy disembarked from a limo parked right on the grounds with a glass of champagne in hand, and ever so "hiply" strutted among a crowd. Which increasingly seemingly mobbed him as he attempted to continue walking. Including myself! LOL Man was he "cool". A sharp stylish dresser too! At one point he looked over in the near distance, gesturing at some brownstone buildings and proclaimed, "I used to play with Charlie Parker over there"! I also recall a mainstay of his performances consisting of only taking his hi-hat to the very front of the stage, almost at it's edge, and proceeding to delight the audience with a masterful technique and flair using his drumsticks on it! The last time I saw Roy Haynes in person, was at the jazz club Iridium in NYC. I 'd taken my girlfriend at the time there for her birthday. Unbelievably he was there at the bar hanging out with drumming legends Max Roach and Art Taylor! We were all there to see Branford Marsalis' Quartet with the great young Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums! Unfortunately, Watts was running late so Roy was asked to sit in and open the show! I was in "Drumming Heaven"! LOL Roy was amazing of course, and as an aside, both Max and Art were warm, friendly, and perfect gentlemen! When Jeff Watts finally arrived and noticed who was playing drums, he did seem a bit taken aback. But after Roy finished, he proceeded to perform in a way in which as usual, I found so inspiring! What a night, and what a memory I will always cherish. Rest In Peace Max. Rest In Peace Art. Rest in Peace Roy Haynes. Thank you for decades of INSPIRATION! My condolences go out to Craig Holiday Haynes & the entire family. 11/12/24.

    I grew up listening to Elvin, Max, Blakey, Philly Jo--the hard-percussion school as they say. Roy deserves to be mentioned with them. He is truly one of the all-time greats, and his 7-decade resume proves it. I saw him back in the late 90s when he was still a young 76 and he just kicked ass.

    I was lucky enough to be in Ted Dunbar's guitar groups at the Jazzmobile from 1974 to 1977. What a knowledgeable, creative, funny guy!!! However, he took it seriously; woe be unto anyone who came in having half-assed their homework....Ted would call you out in a minute. One guy, with a high-end guitar and an ego x2 always had every "Guitar Face" you could imagine, no matter how basic the music. Finally, Ted said, "You'd be a lot better off if you got your music coming out of your fingers instead of your face".......... BURN........

    Ironman Richard Davis on bass. This man is and was a monster. One of the greatest musicians ever imo! Obviously everyone is a legend here particularly Roy, Maggie & Cecil Payne. Unusual line-up with Dunbar, Owens & Davis playing with legends from the bebop era!

      George Neidorf : My wife and I saw him about a decade ago and we still talk about it.
      At one point, he took just his high-hat stand to the front of the stage and mesmerized the entire theatre audience with it.
      He is probably the coolest musician I have ever seen. And what vitality! He was in his 80’s and you could feel the force in him.

In fact he got kicked out of a jazz band he was in before the stones because he was so bland and boring. They replaced him with Ginger Baker, a guy who can actually PLAY the drums.

      Lee is a true improviser - never ever resorting to licks or repeated phrases. Players like Lee are at the whim of their current situation and circumstances. It takes bravery and integrity for him, when he’s not feeling the situation, to take a solo with space and wait for the ideas. If they don’t come, he stops playing. That’s a true improviser. If he wanted, he could’ve resorted to the vast vocabulary he possesses but he didn’t. A player with integrity.

    just don't care for his style. Maybe someone that knows more can explain to me whats going on here. I'm not hearing any composition in his solo, or like any real rolls.

      @@JazzVideoGuy Well, again I'm not a musician so I can only go by what I think sounds good to me, but anyway I like Tony Williams, Alex Acuña, Bob Moses, Michal Miskiewicz (thomasz stanko quartet); the track Kattorna by the Thomasz Stanko Quartet is exemplary of the kind of drumming I love. Sounds corny, but it's like a sizzling fire.

    Roy Haynes rushes too damned much. During Cecil's solo and especially by the time they get around to poor Lee Konitz, its up 20 clicks or so. Can't stand that in a drummer. Richard Davis making his best attempt for a while to keep it down, but what can you do.

      yes it's true he rushes a bit and for ex. on many recordings Art B is dragging but it swings just the same

      He probably played it that way with bird, and of course Charlie Parker could handle any tempo! LOL maybe he just expected these guys to keep up LOL

    • @SAHBfan
      @SAHBfan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've got a really great app on my phone that measures tempo. It is amazingly reliable. When I read you post I decided to measure the tempo. You are correct, it does speed up, but not by as much as you suggest. It starts off at about 126 bpm, but speeds up during solo by the guy with the 'fro to about 132 and again during the solo of the first sax player to 138. It then stays there to the end of the song.

      I'd actually argue that the bassist is the real culprit here. Especially when Konitz starts soloing. Poor Haynes has to pull on the reins a bit which causes him to rush himself.

      In defense of Lee, the time was really OUT during his solo. I can see why he stopped playing and wasn't as comfortable as usual.

    • @aaronwolf547
      @aaronwolf547 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Corbin Alexander Lee's not lost. He's laying down great time and ideas, but the band isn't connecting. No one is listening. The guitar playing is 'comping to himself. If Lee was more confrontational, he'd tell the guitar player to lay the F-out, the way Miles would have.
