      It actually still kills them if you do this fyi, source FWC lecture given to our bass club. They instructed us to just cut the line and said after they observed hundreds of gut-hooked fish the ones with cut lines always got their hook out, but the ones with the hook removed died 9/10 times, even after swimming off fine for a day... Just saying.

    Really good video for neko rigging a craw bait and how to use it but for me the absolute best part of this video is the last section.
    This is the absolute BEST video I have ever seen on removing a hook from a fish that has swallowed it! Great instructions and instructor. Excellent!

    If only the barb always found “no purchase” - I use this technique too for a swallowed hook. Bottom line is if you want to kill less fish, you have to crush your barbs - I resisted in the early years and wish I had done it many years ago. Just cuz you let it go and it swims away does not mean it lives. After a while you have a good sense when you just killed a fish, even if it swims away. Pity when it is a big one and you just killed it. Crush the barbs - it will make you a better fisherman, period.

    Just curious, is this rig much different than the psycho dad on a jighead? I jig a lot but have never tried the neko rig

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sam, a Neko rig is a lot more snag resistant than a bait rigged on a jig, especially around rock. I'm amazed how any Neko-rigged plastic slides over the crevices in rock and rip rap, and rigging with a weedless Neko hood allows it to come through grass pretty good too. It also seems to be a better hooking presentation overall -- in this case, the weight is only 3/16-ounce and not connected to the hook. Bass seem to hold the bait better and longer than with a jig. I also consider the the pull point -- the hook not being connected to the weight (as with a jig) seems to impart a less restricted and more natural action overall. Just my thoughts - Ryan

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi FishingWithBarrett. The reel in this video was a 5.1:1 but just as importantly, it's a 3000 size reel with a big spool. This increases line pickup significantly more due to spool diameter. A couple turns of the handle helps keep you in connection with the bait when dragging it over the bottom. For that, we prefer the bigger, yet light spinning reels.

      One is for the trolling motor (jog function on Minn Kota Ultrex), one for the Humminbird 360 antenna and one for the two fish finders. • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a pretty apparent bite with this system. They eat the bait and hold on to it, so you get a pretty solid feel of their head movement when you reel into them. If it's a scenario where they're grabbing and spitting, then grabbing, then bites can be hard to detect.

    Great info and bait choice. But it drives me crazy when this technique isn't pronounced properly. Pronounced Neh-Ko. E is an Eh sound, I is an Ee sound in Japanese. Neko also translates as Cat in Japanese. the way the hooks sits on the bait, it looks like a cats claw.

    • @Wired2Fish
      @Wired2Fish  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Justin, Shin Fukae brought us up to speed on its pronunciation a few years back. It is indeed pronounced Neh-Ko but its easy for the American-English tongue to spit it out Neck-O. Understandably the English name Neko is Pronounced Nee-Ko which throws a lot of people off by default. After taking what Shin said and doing some research, the way I understood the Japanese translation was "Cat" as in cute (small, finesse). Neko is also a pop-culture buzzword in Japan and is used in a lot of ways. It has a slang connotation referring to " Bottom" but I'll let you do further research on that controversial meaning. Makes sense being as it's fished on the bottom.

      @@Wired2Fish Thanks for the response. I'm a big fan of Shin Fukae and really enjoyed his video on Nejo rigging that you guys did a while back. I'm aware of the slang meaning of Neko as well. I left that out because it can get quite controversial in meaning. But it does make sense as it does refer to cats, like the claw of a cat, and bottom because it's a bottom presentation. Japanese words always have multiple translations, amazing language. Great info as always, I really enjoy all of the Wired2fish content.
