      Trust me, it's NOT an unpopular opinion. For all the flaws this movie had, it actually feels like an Indiana Jones movie, just downgraded in many ways, but the ending is far more satisfying than Dial of Destiny. This franchise should have ended either with Last Crusade or with Kingdom of Crystal Skull at worst.

    For all its faults, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull gave us a perfect ending to the franchise!
    Indy married the love of his life, bonded and reconciled with his son (similar to when he did with his Dad once before). He reaffirmed that he’s the one and only Indiana Jones by taking his hat back from Henry the III. He was at an age where he could either happily retire, or continue his adventures for a few years longer! It was wholesome, it was fulfilling, it was perfect!

    Earlier in the film, the Holy Grail theme plays as Indy looks at his father’s picture with grief.
    This is followed by a similar moment, when the head of Marcus’s statue falls on the KGB guys, and our heroes escape.
    There’s that brief lingering stare from Indy toward the statue, that shows his sadness at Marcus being dead.
    In both moments, there’s a sense of higher power calling out to Indy.
    The grail theme, literally symbolizing eternal life calling out to Indy,
    And Mutt’s amazement at a statue saving them.
    Supernatural things happen to Indy, but he is unable to see these moments for what they truly are:
    Miracles.
    Indy has stumbled a bit in his life.
    But His father, his friend, and God himself are watching over, protecting,
    And trying to give Indy signs that they’re is more after death, if he just believes there is.
    All coming full circle, when Indy is presented with the image that would make anyone doubt their faith,
    In the alien spaceship.
    But instead of taking solace in his lack of faith,
    He chooses to believe more than he ever did before,
    Because he now sees the journey to getting here was a miracle,
    For the first time, he addresses his father, as still being alive,
    Accepting that there is more to faith than the objects surrounding it.

      Eh I dunno chief. I assume that “god” in this sense is the Christian one and that Indy follows him. The way I see it Indy follows no god even if he believes in them. When faced with the evidence of OT YHWH, Hindu Kali, NT GOD and Aliens I imagine it would be hard to pick a lane. Notice in this scene here that his dad is “somewhere”, not shamayim, svargaloka or heaven. Also note how in the wedding scene God is mentioned once by the pastor in a “church” with no religious marking or symbols, that probably one of the least religious ways somebody could get married back in 50s America.

Like they could have just had him be a banker or something to write him out, and Indie could have still been bored and depressed about getting old and having to retire. • @jbard9892
      @jbard9892 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I wasn't devastated, but it dragged the whole movie down with Indy being depressed and basically trying to commit suicide at the end. They were basically trying to erase Crystal Skull instead of trying to create a fun movie. Marion was added in reshoots at the end to make it slightly less depressing. But if they wanted to make Indy 5 a character movie, they needed more character moments and maybe a slower more intelligent adventure where Indy's age isn't weighing him down. Instead its one action set piece after another with almost no story, anchored by a protagonist that's morbidly depressed and is getting no joy out of the quest.
      And its not like they needed to kill Mutt to not have him in the story. Not to mention the fact that Mutt would have been like 35-40 years old; joining the army to piss off Dad when you are already an adult is pretty pathetic. They made Indy's son pathetic and killed him, for the sole purpose of sucking the joy out of the movie. All around brilliant decision.

      @@jbard9892 I totally agree with you. The movie needed more a clever story than a tragedy. More intelligence, less pursuits. Indy is old but he's still clever. But i suppose it's more easy to write a simple action movie. One more.

    • @jbard9892
      @jbard9892 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Will74Densetsu If it was me, I'd have cut that opening scene down by half (at least). Then cut to old man Indy, a grandfather, still married to Marian, but in a rut. He argues with the kids downstairs, his students don't listen to him. He got enough juice left in him to throw some old man sass at them, but he just looks tired. When Shaw sells him that "last great triumph" line his eyes light up but he declines with a crooked smile; "those days are over, kid." But she still convinces him to show her the whatever (nothing to do with time travel, please) and then steals it from him. No big New York set piece, he and Sallah (I'm not so down with John Rhys Davies doing brownface but the movie needs some fun and he delivers) have to track Shaw down.
      Film noir like the Maltese Falcon and Casablanca were big influences on Indiana Jones so lean into that. Indy and Sallah are tracking a cunning thief whose objective is unknown while also being tracked by a mysterious Nazi bastard. This can all culminate in a car chase in Tangiers, though probably about 20% shorter than the one we got.
      Sallah goes home after twisting an ankle, and Indy and Shaw have to team up to find the whatever using her fathers papers as a guide. The second half of the movie being like a less stupid version of National Treasure where the fun is in solving an ancient puzzle with only occasional light action. But in style its more like the map room scene in Raiders. With Indy becoming more energetic as the movie goes on. Attila the Professor becomes as giddy as a schoolboy. Meanwhile, we learn more about Shaw. She was planning to sell the thing but only after she learned what she needed to, and only to raise money to go after the thing her was obsessed with, to prove him right.
      They find the thing, Nazis show up, thing kills Nazis in some gruesome way. End with a nice character moment between Indy and Shaw. Done. Budget $150 million tops.

And why even bother with the "drama" without a character arc. He's miserable throughout the movie, tries to die at the end, then his wife comes back to him. That's a weak as fuck character arc to begin with for a legendary hero, and he's a completely passive participant in his own arc. The only decision he made was to let himself die on a beach, and he failed.

    Wow. The movie may not be perfect but it's at least a happy ending for the character of Indiana Jones and gives the characters an optimistic future. If they ever do a 5th movie then I sure hope it will expand on the relationship between Indy and his son as well as bring back sidekicks like Sallah and Shortround and use them to create a dynamic between the old(Sallah and Short Round) and the new(Mutt). Yes I can see it now. A 5th movie that combines elements of all the pervious movies to create one epic final adventure for Indiana Jones and it would be like poetry since it rhymes. Until that 5th movie comes out im going to be content with the ending we got here because who would want an Indiana Jones movie where Indiana is old and depressed with the side characters getting reduced to mere cameos for nostalgia bait while a new character steals Indy's thunder and even does his own job better then him. If Indy 5 turns out like that, then it would literally be no greater of a crime than making Star Wars movies after Return of the Jedi or making Toy Story 4 after 3.

    This movie is underrated. It wasn't it's fault the audience was too stupid and immature to understand the message. First off, them being aliens, was a reference to the change of movie genres from 30s to 40s action adventure, to 50s Sci-Fi and Horror. It's been like that since IJ was a thing as it was a tribute to the movies that came before. Second, regarding the aliens themselves. The humans had projected their own feelings on what aliens should be like only to find out that even with their immense power, they were no different than us in personality. Or as Indy would say it "They were Archeologists." Which coincides with another alien of Spielberg Lore, E.T. whom got left behind on a simple botany study mission. Meaning each species had a different walk of life that amalgamated into Earth culture. Then there's the last message. People much like Short Round in Temple of Doom, believed it was all about getting the fortune and glory. Knowledge was their alien's treasure. All that gold was an after thought because they were shaped in many things from Earth Culture that we now use plastic or glass versions of. Decor, cookware, tools, things like that. They weren't greedy, they were just curious about how we are, no different than we are curious about what it was really like during ancient times.
    The main reason why people hate this movie? It's too educational for them.

      Right? Just stating that Mutt is walking his own path and pursuing different goals far away from his parents would've been enough, and still would've played a contributing factor into Indy's feeling of being left behind by a changing world and loses loved ones to the passage of time. I know it still would've pissed fans off anyway due to the hopeful closure in KOTCS, but I don't think it's unrealistic that Indy and Mutt may not have been able to bond as strongly as they would've wanted, considering they were absent from each other's lives for 19 years.
      Or you still could've had him fight in the Vietnam War, but is still alive thanks to Indy's tips as a former soldier himself. Or he could've deserted after realizing it wasn't a war worth fighting for and is living in exile to escape a court martial.
