I remember I had a mate who got a job picking up glasses at a bar in Sydney called the Bondi lifesaver. He rang me one day and said you’ve gotta see this band that was on last night called Split Enz, I asked him what they were like & he couldn’t categorise them, he just said come & see them. I was blown away! This was about 74 & there was no other band even remotely like them! Lyrically, musically no one even close!
Such a gentle lovely man, fortunate to see him on his solo tour at Wolverhampton many years ago and he was in his own world on stage then saw him solo and with collaborators in NZ when I lived there.
So wonderful to see an interview with the amazin' Tim Finn who is responsible for three o' my favorite songs o' all time: Not Even Close...Disembodied Voices...Edible Flowers...THANK YOU!
God to see you looking so well, Tim. I remember seeing the Enz on New Faces, then partying to True Colours, then seeing Phil’s painting for Mental Notes stored upstairs in Real Pictures in His Majesty’s, then the final concert at the Logan Concrete Bunker. Years later I sat in the gaslight in Cambridge and listened to your poetry and slide show. It all mattered to another Kiwi trying to make music. Glad to hear you have new music coming out.
I got into Tim with that album. Saw that tour at Manchester Uni late 1993 with the Lemontrees (Guy Chambers) supporting who were great. In under a year I was in NZ myself by chance. If only we had mobile phones then.
He had a great run in the 80's into early 90's. Big Canoe, Tim Finn and Before and After are 3 great albums. Then the collaborations with Neil on Woodface and the 2 other ones were fantastic. He's a very fine writer by himself and really adds to Neil's writing too. Hope he does one more brothers album.
You and your brother, Neil, put New Zealand on the map musically! You also played what was in your heart instead of the derivative crap that became so prevalent! You are both great elder statesmen of music for your country and the world!
OK, I'm hooked now guys. You were a part of my early music years thanks to Whistle Test, Smash Hits et al, and having just seen the Toby Amies piece and thoroughly enjoyed that, here you now are talking to Tim Finn, which is coincidentally great for me personally as, being a Briton, I basically got into and came to understand, the early music of Split Enz only during the pandemic and lockdown, so I'm a relatively new fan of their - and his - music. Ok, now to watch. I'm sure it'll be fascinating. Thanks again for still being around!
Years ago, I posted on some video how much I liked Split Enz. For some reason I wrote they were from Australia (I thought they were) The amount of hate I received was astonishing. Jesus, and I thought Canadians were touchy on that subject.
There can be an overreaction. Which as a NZr i guard against. But there can also be a reason for it. In that - one country, often the smaller one, is not recognised. Ok does that matter? Well, it's not somethig to die in a ditch over. But in a sense - It does. As, by default. The unrecognised country, becomes even less visible. Or as in this case, it all becomes Australian.
Kiwi here, love Tim's music, the song i hope i never ,looms large in my life, underrated talent, alway perfered Tim's music over Neil's, both are great though.
I remember seeing the Enz at the tiny theatre at Canterbury University ( Christchurch , New Zealand ) in the middle of winter c.1975 , I knew the drummer Paul Emlyn Crowther ( electronic whiz and inventor of the Hot Cake distortion pedal ... ) and being a musician had gone backstage to check out ' the gear ' , Paul and their roadie were in the back of the Mellotron with hair driers trying to get the thing up to speed and in some semblance of tune ... They truly were cutting edge in terms of presentation , production and truly original music ... Played a support for them years later in Perth, Western Australia , when True Colours was peaking world wide ... in a pub no less ! ( albeit a giant beer barn to 1200 plus punters )
Great interview which reminded me I'd not heard Time and Tide by Split Enz for years. Went straight back to it and it's just sublime. Thank you.
Their most complete and best in my opinion.
I ended up on Spellbound last night. Some wonderful things in there too

Ha ... Phil Warren said they were ' Too clever ... ' That first version of Spellbound was very like Sparks
Great chat and he deserves to be as lauded as his brother.
More so .
He's far more original.
@@Tom-hk6ub really??hes very good absolutely, but just lacks neils classic looseflowing songwriting ability, but i do like tim!
@@dougreed2257 The truly overlooked talent is Phil Judd!
@@dougreed2257 its his lack of classic looseflowing songwriting that i like?
Ah, Tim Finn! Wonderful! I remember buying his Before & After album - Hit The Ground Running was a great single off that record!
Yeah it's a brilliant album!
