    This advert lampshaded the "Ask the Host" lifetime twenty years before it came to be.

      Do you mean "Lifeline", not "Lifetime"? Because it sure has been a "lifetime" since they finally introduced the Ask The Host in the game back in 2018.

      @@OfficialRyanFouracre Yes, that was a typo. I was mentioning how that this advert lamp-shaded the Ask the Host lifeline twenty years prior.

    Just to clear up the thing about Chris Tarrant saying that he'd even help, it refers to the fact that during the first series he had the correct answer on his screen. He was allowed to tell the contestant the right answer whenever he chose to, and they were allowed to ask at any time. However, he was also allowed to misguide them. This meant that being told the correct answer usually made things more difficult, as you didn't know whether it was good or bad advice. It was a mind game between the two, you had to try and work out if he was trying to help or hinder. It didn't manifest into any of the games very strongly, they didn't make it all that clear that it was even an element, and I don't think a single contestant ever actually asked him for any input. But if you watch a few first season episodes, you'll notice it in some ways. If a contestant struggled on an easy question, he'd typically give them the correct answer in a jokey manner, as though he wasn't supposed to. He'd cough and say "D". or something. As a game progressed more, he'd usually use his position to try and rock their confidence. If they were adamant of the right answer, he'd raise an eyebrow, pull a concerned face and ask why they thought it was that answer. This type of thing spilled into the following seasons, but it's origin was in the fact that he wasn't actually neutral for the first run of episodes and was facing off against you.

      Actually ask the host was going to be a lifeline. It was dropped right at the last minute in favour of 50:50, hence the promos that appeared before the first episode hinting a lifeline that never made it to air.

    "I'll even help" I think refers to 50:50 easier than saying a computer will take away two wrong answers and leave one correct and incorrect.

    • @RenegadeGaruda
      @RenegadeGaruda 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      It was a parody of some of the more needlessly complex quiz shows that rely on gimmicks so Tarrant could explain how 'simple' Millionaire was as a format and how 'easy' it is for contestants to win prizes. 15 questions and win a million.

    • @admiralsven576
      @admiralsven576 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It was a thing for a kind of a "don't watch that, watch this" advert. It was taking the mick out of some needlessly crazy and confusing game show format, with a cheesy host thrown in for good measure (the very opposite of Tarrant on Millionaire, maybe not so on Tiswas but still). "Win a Wok" was never actually a thing (thank goodness) but it was a parody of the happy daytime shows that Millionaire certainly contrasted with.
