I really wanted to get an MRAD, but I don’t like that Barrett was bought out by an Australian company. I think the SRS platform is awesome, but there are some much needed upgrades (double stack mags, full length rails on the regular hand guards that can be replaced on the non-M2 models, and a more adjustable cheek piece that more more than an inch). Also, when will the barrels be sourced from somewhere in America?
In general bullpups are "more difficult" to shoot because they are much less front heavy. Weight helps to stabilize the muzzel while shooting. I like bullpups for there mobility but a bit less for shooting big calibers precisly. An advantage of a bullpup sniper rifle on the other hand is that you can have a much longer barrel which is increasing the range of the rifle and gives you a flater tracetory and less wind deflection. And the bullpup is much better to manouver around as it is more compact and feels lighter as more weight is in the back . I really can say using an bolt on a bullpup without removing the head is really only a training issue. As always everything hss advantages and drawbacks.
I feel as though if I were in the field I would prefer your rifle, but my only hesitation is with the lighter weight is it slower for follow up shots for prone and positional?
Here is a video I made years ago running the bolt, I am no where near as fast as the PSR shooters that run SRS rifles. Note in the video the scar shooter was slow because he didn't have a nice stable monopod in the rear and had to deal with excess rifle movement that I didn't have to. th-cam.com/video/bdC-QDK_3Dg/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for this video. I think you guys are one of the most innovative companies out there at the moment. I Own most of the rifles included in the video and am the proud Owner of the SRS Covert. While I can testify to my SRS being 1/4 MOA with the short 308 barrel, I still find that having the explosion in your face is more tiring that on a conventional setup and I struggle more with the ergonomics of the rifle.
My 338LM/300WM SRSA2 is one of my go-to rifles. You guys are innovating and a small company, and that comes with hiccups, but you guys make good stuff that is cool.
Thanks for posting. I really found this content interesting and insightful. Please keep posting these videos and making an amazing product. Loven the SRS platform.👍🤙
Im still waiting for Desert Tech to redesign the rails on their MDRX rifles that allows for 3rd party muzzle devices to pass through the rail when cleaning or changing calibers. Emailed DT and they were not interested in improving their rail to allow this function. Kind of kills a lot of the potential buyers if you have to remove your muzzle break from the barrel to take the rail off to clean it or shoot suppressed. Anyone using SilencerCo, HUX Works, or others cans with suppressors that attach are kind of SOL.
All feedback is always taken into consideration so don’t hesitate to keep it coming. Just know sometimes there are engineering limitations that don’t allow things to immediately be implemented. Really harry things generally go into next generations of products.
Having worked on the SRS M2 for a few months now, it's a real shame to see this. The SRS offers some really unique advantages that the traditional layout simply doesn't provide.
Requirement was not ambidextrous it stated that a right and left handed rifle must be available. Shooting weak side with the SRS is very doable. Shooting most magnum bolt guns left handed requires you to lift your head to run the bolt otherwise you’ll knock your teeth with the bolt handle.
As a Swat sniper, I purchased an SRS A1 at great personal expense and ran it as my primary rifle for 6 years. I am extremely impressed with the weapon and in my opinion there is no better platform for a law enforcement sniper rifle than the Covert. An often overlooked attribute is the compact length provides a significant advantage in field craft; whether it’s stalking into position or a mobile vehicle hide. My only critique is the length of pull is a little long for use with body armor. I would prefer a 13.5” to 14” length of pull. In several sniper schools with harsh conditions (mud, sand snow and rain), I put it up against many other manufacturers including and AI and it was more reliable and accurate than the other brands. The only reason I have stopped using it in my professional capacity is because of the agency denying personally owned weapons and requiring the use of a semi automatic rifle. I still have much love for the SRS rifle and is my favorite rifle I own.
@@OFFICIALUND Better than your over priced bullpup. My Bergara will shoot just as well if not better at a quarter of the price. Just another sucker that over paid.
The srs really shines in having compact magnum sniper rifles. That's the actual sweat spot. A 26in barrel shooting 338 norma at a mile. That's the same length as a 18 in 308 traditional style rifle
SRS all day long I own three shot a coyote yesterday with one chambered in 65 PRC. Keep up the good work Nick! Please make a diving board for your guys's scope mounts so I can mount a rangefinder to my SRS
I love good engineering and when i saw the Desert Tech SRS I was immediately sold. Cant wait to get one. Desert Tech should of won the contract but the military wont adopt a bullpup style weapon. Too bad because they are a superior weapon system.
Why am I not surprised that PC “trumped” the best sniper rifle…the SRS. I’m saving my pennies for my next rifle. Can’t wait to join the Desert Tec family!
nick i bought your SRS A1 loved it sold it only so i could Buy the SRS A2 both are better then 1/2" shooters and i own the MDR in 308 compact accurate versatile calibers i own in your platforms two 6.5x47 barrels 6.5 creedmoor, 308, 284 shehane, and soon to arrive 510 whisper so i would take your platform hands down thanks nick for the innovation Doug Freelove
A few friends of mine have had SRS rifles over the years. My only complaint with the system was the magazine on their three rifles I've been able to shoot. One in 338 Lapua, and two in 6.5CM. The issue was on all three rifle magazines, the bolt always hung up on the second to last round. Not sure why. Both owners had mentioned it to me before letting me shoot the rifles. I was impressed with the systems accuracy, ergonomics would take some getting used to but overall I will be sticking with my AI rifle. SRS is a strong contender if I ever decide to pick up another high end rifle.
currently have and love my R700 308 iv never had any issues except past the stock was crap but swapped it out for something better. never had any complaints up to 850M. i love the idea of a bullpup. currently yours is far out of my budget but one day I hope to get one of yours. as a 6.5. are there any plans on making a more affordable bolt action version?
i was always behind it. we got issued the axmc in 300win which good too. but i prefer your gun. im thinkin about buying it as a civilian but at the same time its hard to find some proper tests or opinions
Desert Tech should split the MDR family into large and small frame. A combat reliable 5.56 (and .300blk) size bullpup. No fancy ejection, no .308 size and weight, no mag inserts. Just the gun the AUG, Tavor and L85 wanted to be. 16" and 12" (and 8" 300blk) options. A little less modularity. Just reliable, compact and lightweight. Stronger upper (monolithic?) and stronger internals, no mim parts. Stronger charging handle. Give us comfy/ changable cheek pads and either a steep or evenbetter exchangable AR pistol grips. Oh, and maybe an improved trigger pack. Maybe even work with Triggertech or Hiperfire. We would absolutely pay for even better (reliable!) triggers. And then the big boy rifle for .308, 6.5creed and nowadays 8.6blackout.
Well. I'm totally onboard with bullpups, especially for hunting. A MDR is my companion of choice. I'd gladly add an SRS into the collection - especially for longer shots. However, the price tag scares me away. Yes, innovation costs money and that's fine. My problem as a European shooter is that your rifles essentially double their price until they're on the shelves here. Come on, DT, there must be a cheaper way. I paid 4000 Euros for my MDR some years ago (bought an early one - pre-MDRX because the concept made instantly sense). Currently they run even more. A SRS will set you back almost five digits. That's insane for everyone, except for enthusiasts with unlimited resources. Long story short: You could sell a whole lot more of your guns if they were somewhat close to US-pricing. Yes, a bit more is fine for shipping and all, but not double. Anyhow, from a technical point of view, I'd pick a SRS any day of the week.
I have an SRS, great rifle but I do agree the bolt is not as natural to work (but it’s still workable). How much was discontinued left handed platform considered? As a lefty that desired the revised platform I’ll be somebody that never buys another desert tech.
So, I love the SRS, every one of them has been amazing and I think snipers would have had no problem transitioning to it, but with contracts like that there’s so much more that goes in to it than just raw performance, cost matters, maintenance programs, things that may be a benefit in the civilian world can be a problem for military rifles or to the military and the list goes on. I was rooting for the SRS even though I knew I’d likely be retired before we would see it and I honestly didn’t want Barrett to win because the M107 just made me not their biggest fan. But that’s neither here nor there. The question becomes, how well can lefties work the gun? I honestly don’t know. How quickly can you meet the demands of the contract without failing the requirements? (This was ultimately the issue with the M110A1 CSASS), when breakages occur how long is the gun going to be out of the hands of the sniper section? Can the sniper section easily handle many of the repairs and parts replacement? And here’s the big one, how easily can a PFC or SPC who’s new to the section and messing with the rifle able to deadline it or take it out of action doing something that they may or may not be allowed to do but the feature exists, this has been a real issue with modular and tunable systems. I’m not saying the right guys won or that the wrong guys lost, but it comes down to so many different factors that’s just more than performance metrics. There’s a reason the army still uses the M4, because the gains from going from an M4 to an SR16 would be minimal for a huge jump in price.
I own the SRS A1. Only wish I had gone w 300WinMag rather than 6.5 CM. It is ALWAYS under 1/2 inch. Regarding the bolt cycling…after lots of reps I prefer it over a traditional bolt action setup.
I mean if the gov doesnt want the SRS, can we have it instead? Sorry to hear they overlooked your offering because it was a bullpup design. Wish I knew what the US military actually has against the Bullpup. Sig news RM277 seems to be the only one theyve even considered.
Man i want a HTi. Dont have a place to take advantage of the distance and definitely dont have the bread to buy one or to buy ammo for one. knowing that i had one would be ok with me though
I like the srs rifles. Its just so damned expensive getting them here to europe. The approximate cost i got from a dealer here in Sweden is about right above 100 000 sek or 9400$. I would love a black one in 308 tho :)
I really think it's hard to beat Accuracy International is over priced like ALL of these rifles are however, AI is the one I would choose for it's performance history, proven track record.
Unfortunately, availability in Austria of any Desert Tech rifle is virtually a fairytale. And the rare one that does pop up is at an offensively greedy price by the dealer.
I know this is an old post, but I have an idea and hear me out with an open mind. How about making a non bullpup variant of your rifle. I know it’s kinda your trademark thing, but legit I think you’re missing out on a large part of the market by sticking to only bullpup. I remember as a commercial consumer seeing the Barrett mrad before I noticed the Barrett logo or knew what it was and thought deserttech made it. I honestly think if DT offered a nonbullpup conventional configuration variant of their gun that had cross compatibility with the existing DT conversions it would be a market win.
I'm a professional end user. I'd rather take the SRS into the field than the MRAD (and that's not a ding on the MRAD, it's a nice rifle). @DTA keep up the good fight. Eventually some of us that actually shoot will get into positions where we can make decisions (BTW, big fan of your NGSW submission too, at least relative to the competition)
And then there's FN who lost a lot. They discontinued their SPR line for the Ballista only to discontinue that line a few years later. Now FN doesn't offer a single precision rifle in their catalog.
Not knowing all the information, it's hard to say, but I know people factor plays a big role and some of the people factor is those that aren't very knowledgeable making the decisions. Would be awesome to see DT win the contract eventually. I think the biggest drawback to DT (the muzzle flip being a bit more) is a moot point with having a spotter. I made my choice when I could have gotten literally any rifle I wanted, I ended up getting the SRS m2. I bought once and cried once. Now I want a few more DT rifles.
For the same reasons sig is winning everything I don’t think it was your rifle. I work for a major medical company and we win contracts with hospital networks over competitors with better products because of our overall package. We have a wider range of products and service to a point where we can bundle across multiple departments to win deals. Barrett probably won because of guarantees of service and other product offerings. That’s my thought but who knows. I watched a competitor with a better product tossed out of a bid because the service contract was to expensive. We threw in 5 yrs for free and went so far as to throw in ortho trays for free even though we are capital.
bonjour magnifique reportage explicatif a la création d'une arme pour les sniper ce reportage fut très instructif bonne continuation a vous votre groupe et merci pour se partage cordialement
Wish I could afford any of these beautys but I always had a special fondness for the srs.. absolutely hate how old school opinions are allowed to shadow over performance based facts
I think it makes some sense that they choose to not do a bullpup. By the other companies using a collapsible stock, they have a similar length when transporting but the bolt would be easier to operate when shooting on average most shooter would be able to get follow up shots faster which is very important. I don't see deployed length mattering as much. I would rather pick the lighter bull pup maybe the people deciding weren't as concerned about weight. I would love to see all the accuracy data and more info on how the others compared from the last program I'm betting some rifles may have been close to the SRS.
In the video I provided the only information on accuracy results that was reported to me which was our rifles and the next most accurate competitor. Keep watching. 😉
That really sucks that they dinged you for the trigger, the notification issue, and for another clerical thing on your NGSW offering. When will you put the proper systems in place to make sure your is are dotted and ts are crossed?
You guys need to update the whole platform. The M2 needs to have a front rail inside diameter of 1.75 to 2 in so we can have a 16in barrel with Suppressor nicely tucked inside the rail system. You might have to machine the rear scope rail higher to accommodate that. Plus it looks cool
Only bad thing about these trials is the fact that they are not done by people who will be using the weapon system in action. I'm not a sniper myself, but I'd argue all those guys would prefer something as light, as short, and as accurate as possible to get the job done. Bullpup is good option for bolt-action sniper rifle imo - you are not shooting automatic fire so you dont get gasses in the face, you can more easily blend in with regular troops because it's shorter rifle i.e. you're not sticking out like a sore thumb dragging a pole with you that basically says to enemy "shoot this guy". But hey, these contracts come with huge lobbying - and Barrett also has a name and legacy rifles in service (M82, M107 in .50cal) to its name.
Surely, the best-of-the-best would be able to replace a burnt out lightbulb in the display cabinet behind talent/CEO in a marketing video? Attention to detail?!? Oh, yeah, DT rifles are cool!
I generally will never understand why Bullpup isn't widely adopted, yes sure there are certain drawbacks to it but the smaller size trumps most of those considerations in most of the cases. IMHO it's mainly due to "it's weird and we want to keep what we know" than any rational argument.
Would love to see a 3 shot magazine available for the hunting weight users. Typically we don’t need 5 shots and a shorter mag would really tidy things up!
Not sure why they even do some of these tests. I am convinced the decision was often made before the tests start. Like shooting with the old guy that has had his mind made up on what works best for 30 years. That is what he likes and good luck changing his mind. Learn to play golf and make friends.
NAGSR and NGSW programs are the US military programs we have participated in with our automatic firearms. I will try to post about those rifles in the coming weeks too. 👍🏻
The Same so called higher up’s performed the same biased testing against the dragon skin body armor. They already have in mind their favorite pick. However in a mundane attempt at requesting a new and innovative approach towards a more stable platform. Unfortunately unbiasedness rules for more of a traditional standard every time weeding out the very request for a new and innovative approach towards technology.
Also if the request includes a set aside preference and no economically disadvantaged small business isn’t utilized as additional leverage in the competition process the baseness begins leaning towards a more traditional approach indicative to troop morale and safety
I've always dreamt of having an SRS. But, while it is the best rifle, the military is overly political. They don't just want what they ask for, they want the company they want to deliver it... Barrett won the contract before the competition began.
I have always thought Desert Tech was ahead of the game but military bureaucracy will ruin everything. They are notorious for making bad decisions. While the Barrett is insanely good…they should have accepted more than one option. Sorry to Desert Tech for the B.S.!

That makes little sense and studies have stated otherwise
I feel as though if I were in the field I would prefer your rifle, but my only hesitation is with the lighter weight is it slower for follow up shots for prone and positional?
Here is a video I made years ago running the bolt, I am no where near as fast as the PSR shooters that run SRS rifles. Note in the video the scar shooter was slow because he didn't have a nice stable monopod in the rear and had to deal with excess rifle movement that I didn't have to. th-cam.com/video/bdC-QDK_3Dg/w-d-xo.html
I have owned my SRS A1 since 2014. I love that rifle.
God bless you, and your Good work, from Brazil
Thanks for this video. I think you guys are one of the most innovative companies out there at the moment. I Own most of the rifles included in the video and am the proud Owner of the SRS Covert. While I can testify to my SRS being 1/4 MOA with the short 308 barrel, I still find that having the explosion in your face is more tiring that on a conventional setup and I struggle more with the ergonomics of the rifle.
Suppressor? :)
My 338LM/300WM SRSA2 is one of my go-to rifles. You guys are innovating and a small company, and that comes with hiccups, but you guys make good stuff that is cool.
I love my SRS A1, people ask me questions about it all the time.
Thanks for posting. I really found this content interesting and insightful. Please keep posting these videos and making an amazing product. Loven the SRS platform.👍🤙
You’re welcome, we have a lot more that we are going to share!
You should do an interview with Kevin Owens about the competition and why he went with the MRAD considering that he was a major player in the MK22.
I use Dead Air muzzle devices without issue. I can move the handguard freely.
Having worked on the SRS M2 for a few months now, it's a real shame to see this. The SRS offers some really unique advantages that the traditional layout simply doesn't provide.
Thanks for the positive feedback!
Best practical rifle shooting videos of different platforms on you tube!
@@OFFICIALUND There wrong handed anyway doesn't really matter!
Requirement was not ambidextrous it stated that a right and left handed rifle must be available. Shooting weak side with the SRS is very doable. Shooting most magnum bolt guns left handed requires you to lift your head to run the bolt otherwise you’ll knock your teeth with the bolt handle.
We had a lefty rifle option at the time and that wasn’t ever a factor.
Bergara.
@@OFFICIALUND Best barrels in the business.
Proud to have been an early Desert Tech fan
i am a big fan of your persistence in quality assurance. quality will always speak for itself in the long run.
Thanks!!
SRS all day long I own three shot a coyote yesterday with one chambered in 65 PRC. Keep up the good work Nick! Please make a diving board for your guys's scope mounts so I can mount a rangefinder to my SRS
I will look into that. Thanks for the suggestion!
I love good engineering and when i saw the Desert Tech SRS I was immediately sold. Cant wait to get one. Desert Tech should of won the contract but the military wont adopt a bullpup style weapon. Too bad because they are a superior weapon system.
i love the desert tech. have nothing to proof when its smal, but it hits big
Love the content!
Why am I not surprised that PC “trumped” the best sniper rifle…the SRS. I’m saving my pennies for my next rifle. Can’t wait to join the Desert Tec family!
FN Ballista has the coolest name though, ngl
This is the American dream congratulations!!
Thank you desert tech for everything you guys have done for lot of people including first Christian country and others god bless
nick
i bought your SRS A1 loved it sold it only so i could Buy the SRS A2 both are better then 1/2" shooters and i own the MDR in 308 compact accurate versatile calibers i own in your platforms two 6.5x47 barrels 6.5 creedmoor, 308, 284 shehane, and soon to arrive 510 whisper so i would take your platform hands down
thanks nick for the innovation
Doug Freelove
Glad to hear your testimonial! Thanks for your long term support! 👍🏻
Hands down... SRS!
currently have and love my R700 308 iv never had any issues except past the stock was crap but swapped it out for something better. never had any complaints up to 850M. i love the idea of a bullpup. currently yours is far out of my budget but one day I hope to get one of yours. as a 6.5.
are there any plans on making a more affordable bolt action version?
i was always behind it. we got issued the axmc in 300win which good too. but i prefer your gun. im thinkin about buying it as a civilian but at the same time its hard to find some proper tests or opinions
Defenly, Desert Tech
In my opinion.
I own the SRS A1.
Only wish I had gone w 300WinMag rather than 6.5 CM.
It is ALWAYS under 1/2 inch. Regarding the bolt cycling…after lots of reps I prefer it over a traditional bolt action setup.
I love your company sniper
I mean if the gov doesnt want the SRS, can we have it instead?
Sorry to hear they overlooked your offering because it was a bullpup design. Wish I knew what the US military actually has against the Bullpup. Sig news RM277 seems to be the only one theyve even considered.
The SRS is a great police sniper rifle as it's compact and more concealable than conventional sniper rifles.
If you ever have the chance to get one of the TTS XCEED I really would like to see a comparison video with the SRS :)
I'm personally a Sako Fanboy, but DT knows how to make a good rifle.
I really think it's hard to beat Accuracy International is over priced like ALL of these rifles are however, AI is the one I would choose for it's performance history, proven track record.
AI makes great stuff I love the smoothness of their actions!
Unfortunately, availability in Austria of any Desert Tech rifle is virtually a fairytale. And the rare one that does pop up is at an offensively greedy price by the dealer.
I am told JTF2 (tier 1 asset Canadian),has operators that are using or have used or at least trained with or field tested this platform
Thanks!!
And then there's FN who lost a lot. They discontinued their SPR line for the Ballista only to discontinue that line a few years later. Now FN doesn't offer a single precision rifle in their catalog.
your rifles are the best.
Thanks for your support!
Sig just made sure to have hookers, blow, and incriminating video after Beretta beat them in the 80s.
bonjour magnifique reportage explicatif a la création d'une arme pour les sniper ce reportage fut très instructif bonne continuation a vous votre groupe et merci pour se partage cordialement
Man, I wish I had the chance to try out an SRS while I was in. I did love the SASR, but it isn't what you'd call a run-and-gun system. lol
What did the military do with all of their old sniper rifles?
We didn’t submit the paperwork it was PCP our job was to make the gun for them.
@@DesertTechUT oh that sucks that your prime contractor partner didn't do their part.
SWAT Snipers have also requested this. Thanks for your feedback.
I wish yours had won. I know I want one!…or two.
Srs 👍💪
300 prc or 7mm prc it's nice to see in srs a2 rifles.
SRS for the win! 100% SRS was and is the clear win. The high ups however will spend 10x the contracts value before they admit they were wrong.
Surely, the best-of-the-best would be able to replace a burnt out lightbulb in the display cabinet behind talent/CEO in a marketing video? Attention to detail?!? Oh, yeah, DT rifles are cool!
Now if only i could afford one :')
I just found out about you guys three weeks ago if you can believe that. Anyway, I’ll be ordering one.
SRS always. Sadly with more than 2x more expensive here where I live (Germany) compared to the US.
@@OFFICIALUND I’d still like a repeater. You’d need to install a false mag to single feed anyway
Not sure why they even do some of these tests. I am convinced the decision was often made before the tests start. Like shooting with the old guy that has had his mind made up on what works best for 30 years. That is what he likes and good luck changing his mind. Learn to play golf and make friends.
What about selective fire firearms? 🤔
@@DesertTechUT oh... Ya better 👀
5 miles in the face!
Frankly, I’m shocked SIG didn’t win 😵😵😵
That’s funny! Nice one!
I've always dreamt of having an SRS.
But, while it is the best rifle, the military is overly political. They don't just want what they ask for, they want the company they want to deliver it...
Barrett won the contract before the competition began.
Sned me one ! Thank you !! :)
Well I own a .50 cal HTI so I am bias😊
I have always thought Desert Tech was ahead of the game but military bureaucracy will ruin everything. They are notorious for making bad decisions. While the Barrett is insanely good…they should have accepted more than one option. Sorry to Desert Tech for the B.S.!
My LH SRS Covert is still King of the Hill for handiness. I also run a MRAD left handed but the OL makes it a looong gun suppressed. DT offers way more unique features.
You didn't kiss the right asses! HANDS DOWN DT WON.......
Stigma’s against bullpups will forever be their greatest downfall
We will fix that. Mark my words. 😀
If only you guys made a left handed version
