A Military History of the Falklands War Part 2: From San Carlos to Stanley

- After barely surviving the brutal Battle of San Carlos, the most costly naval battle waged by the Royal Navy since the Second World War, and successfully landing on East Falkland Island, 3 Commando Brigade was faced the daunting prospect of recapturing Stanley and driving the Argentine military from the Falklands. Opposing them were some 13,000 men under General Menendez, 10 battalion equivalents which were holding excellent defensive ground. Even with the arrival of 5 Infantry Brigade and its 3 additional battalions, bringing the total to 8, recapturing Stanley and its surrounding high ground was shaping up to be the most challenging operation conducted by the British Land Forces in decades.
But before the final battle could even be contemplated, General Moore had to break out of the beachhead, win the special forces battle, maneuver his forces across exceptionally difficult country, invest the primary defensive line and then assault the Argentine mountain fortresses, all in the middle of a sub-Antarctic winter. Although General Menendez' men are often decried as lowly conscripts, the plain reality was the heavily armed Argentine ground forces were ready and willing to fight and die for their Malvinas. Despite all of these challenges, through superior morale, command and, most importantly, tactical skill, the British battalions were able to drive the Argentines from this truly formidable defensive terrain, and liberate Stanley. But in doing so they would have to pay their share of blood and sacrifice.
This video, the second and final installment of the Military History of the Falklands War, covers the land campaign, including the Battle of Goose Green, the battle between the Argentine and British special forces for domination of the high ground and the reconnaissance edge, 3 Commando Brigade's yomp across East Falkland, the loss of Sir Galahad at Bluff Cove, 3 Commando brigade's offensive at Mount Longdon, Two Sisters and Mount Harriet and, finally, the ultimate battles at Tumbledown and Wireless Ridge.

I had no idea he just became a dad so congrats to him. Some of the most top tier in-depth content.
Timmeh!
No war was ever declared. it was called a 'CON- Flict.' at the time for that reason.

Lehman says U.S. aid enabled Britain to win Falklands
LONDON -- Former Navy Secretary John Lehman disclosed that American military aid given London during the 1982 Falklands war was extensive and said Britain would have lost without it, the BBC-TV confirmed Sunday.
'Britain would have had to have withdrawn from the Falklands' if the United States had cut off the aid, said Lehman, Navy secretary from 1981 to 1987.
What you’ve done here Hypo is write a book. I’d highly recommend putting the transcript together as a book.
I love when my faves appear in each other’s comments sections.
Illustrated book, with pictures he used here. I think it would be mandatory reading in U.K’s school system.
Best historical channel on TH-cam.
double that
Yes detailed!
And not a single source cited!
Yeah it's pretty good hopefully it doesn't turn to crap like other have.
I have not been disappointed by any of his videos or felt wanting afterwards.
This man has never seen a sentence he couldn't start with 'Thus'. Fantastically detailed content.
Thank you - My Brother in Law was on The Coventry - a stoker one of the last ones off....RIP Mark as PTSD caught up with him many years later....A warrior at 17 years old. 🪖🪖🌈🌹🙏🙏❤

I have seen almost every video out there on the Falklands War. This Part 2 has presented the most detailed discussion of the land warfare "I have ever seen" and included deserved credit to the Argentina troops who fought well under the circumstance. I also don't recall Exocet shore batteries being mentioned in other documentaries to name one of many new facts learned. Outstanding work! - It is my belief that the Falklands are and should remain British and its people deserve to be left free to live their lives in peace. Let's pray that another foolish war of conquest doesn't happens again, as the troops are the ones who suffer and die the blunders of unwise politician.
The yanks giving night vis to the Argentinians & the hap hazard tactics shocked me the most.
@@kambhamra2324when did we give night vision to them
@@kevincorrigan1754 It's in the video.
UK stole the islands, expelled Argentinian people, implanted its own and now begs for self-determination
On the other hand, UK is one of the countries that rejects the will of Crimean and Donbass people to be part of Russia
But yeah, let's respect the opinion of implanted people

Bloody Aussie releasing videos at midnight for us in the Mother Country. Now I’ve got to stay up to the small hours to watch it all
In one go
As an American I'm grateful. And I'm seeing it a day after the fact probably.😅
I hope you're proud. The UK fought a near perfect war in regards to morality. I watch Argentinian and British veterans from this war meet on TH-cam. It's so heartwarming. They somehow fought a war without hate.

Too short a war for much animosity to build?
@@thelukesternater Yeah, and no real history of animosity between the people. Too far apart I guess. It's the politicians that battled with words over the islands mostly, and still do.
@mattblom3990 The fact that the conflict wasn't tainted by civilian deaths(only 3)and atrocities adds to the positive character of the war(so to speak)in my opinion.
First of all, thank you for the upload! Second, I've noticed that The Ultimate Guide to Nuclear Weapons was gone from the channel. Is there a chance it's going to be back? It is hands down one of the best documentaries on the history of nuclear weapons. Third, is there a Patreon or something we can donate to? I'd be glad to contribute to the channel.
Not watching this till tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon. Cold beer, hot pizza, and what I suspect will be 4:13:56 of being totally absorbed by the best military channel on TH-cam.👍
I can't describe how happy I am to see this right now. expected to wait longer
This is another example of superlative research combined with an enviable capacity for narration. I am most impressed with your evenhanded depiction of both the Brits and Argentinians, illustrating the courage and valor of both sides....something far too rare in histories of the Falklands.
Thank you sir for your outstanding work here. You have substantially enriched my understanding of this complex war...
"A Wessex snuck in to Stanley" had me in stitches
Your channel, the ops room, histograph and drachinifel are legit the best history content out there.
Although not technically history (more present day stuff). You should check out Perun
There are so many "history" channels but the four mentioned are top tier.
Any vets in the comments?
You are true hero’s to me and I salute all of you. Much respect. ❤ 🇬🇧 🫡

Unbelievable that Jones ended up in charge of an infantry battalion. No coincidence that the attack was successful after the 2iC took control of the battle.
WOW, turns my knowledge of the Falklands on its head, at least the ground war. THE best and most comprehensive Ive seen on the subject.
Yep kinda shocked me tbh.
for the first time in a long time, HHH has released a second part to one of his many series
I was hoping this wouldn't end up like the Iraq pt1 video
Thanks!
Terry Peck's stories appear in a few books but i feel like theyd easily make a book on their own, incredible resolve and determination, lots of close calls and a love for his island, his kelpies and the men that liberated them.
I would not have believed i'd be so keen to go through 7 hours of content (part 1 & 2) but i couldn't not hear it all. So compelling was the delivery. Well done.
This was an exceptional video , over 4 hours of top quality military history.
The amount of effort and work that went into making this was obviously immense
This is fantastic, absolutely superbly done. If you want the detail that 2x 4 hours can offer - nothing on TV could ever come close to this. 8 hours - all content, no filler, no recapping, superbly made and narrated. Thank you.
I’ve been checking your page every day for this
Worth every penny. Fantastic content!
Fantastic 8 hrs of content, That showed the real, real. And I've watched lots and lots of falklands war step by steps
Dude your stuff is excellent. Thank you for providing us with this
By far the best documentary of the Falklands War....congrats👋👋👍👍
I’m going through a difficult time and have been listening to this at night when I wake up feeling dread. Thank you
I've been using these to help me sleep sometimes. Making me having to re-watch sections!
I hope your sleep becomes sound. Take care 🙂
Amazing detailing. Long form videos dont get as much engagement on youtube. This is common knowledge. But thanks to you for giving us this and not worrying about engagment metrics and views!
I never fully appreciated just how valiantly the Argentinian military forces, some of them conscripts, actually acquitted themselves. This war, brief though it was, was a far more close-run affair than I had been led to believe previously.
This shocked me,It was close.
Yes, sure... the "brave" Argentine recruits fighting against sheep and soldiers in jeeps, what a way to laugh, every time someone insinuates that the Argentines were brave I personally take it upon myself to inform them that the Argentine landing on April 2 was by surprise and without prior declaration of war... every time someone insinuates a supposed Argentine "bravery" I refer them to seeing the audiovisual record of the Argentine Chinook flying at low altitude over the houses to cause fear in the civilian population before and during the taking of the governor's house, the example of the photos of the Argentine LVTP-7 amphibious armored vehicles trying to block the way of people with shopping bags is also valid... I will only say one thing, if I had a aircraft carriers, with their respective Chinooks helicopters and LVTP-7 amphibious armored vehicles, so even I without having military experience would be "brave", but that supposed bravery would disappear the instant the owners of the invaded lands with weapons similar to mine came to present me battle... 😂😂
Where did the "Guide to nuclear Weapons video go!?!" it was the best such I've ever seen!
Astonishingly well researched. The most comprehensive description of this war done to date. I love your work.
im going to bed at a normal time......
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND ITS GONE
I've watched dozens of TH-cam videos about the Falkland Islands War. These two videos (part 1 and 2) are the best and most comprehensive I've seen. This is excellent work!
This was a good documentary. 😊 Thank you for your great work. War is a terrible thing.
For all the good it might have done Argentina, they may as well have saved themselves the trouble, and spared many men.
I finally caught one of these vids the day it came out! Always enjoyed your stuff & learned a lot about some of the more niche battles in the Pacific. Can't wait for your Ukraine/WWIII/US Civil war 2.0 docs! lol
Been waiting for this since the day Pt1 came out. Was WELL worth the wait. BRILLIANTLY, and most importantly, objectively laid out in beautifully constructed detail. You should be rightly proud of yourself for this series and that comes from an ex RMC ( although Falklands was before my time it's events, failures, victories and lessons played a massive part in my own career and our learning at all levels).
What a beautiful video. The quality of this stuff literally brings a tear to my eye.
A lucid, eloquent and detailed account: exceptionally well researched and presented!

Holy shit, he did it again. The madlad uploaded. Thanks bro.
I can't believe it's taken me 3 months, but I'm finally clicking go on this bad boy! 🎉
Phenomenal two part series. Thank you so much!
I remember being glued to this as a teenager, at this remove it's surprising to learn in detail just how close it could've been. Thanks for the content
The more you go into detail in the different campaigns and capabilities, the more I love you channel! Keep it up, and thank you!
You're my favorite youtuber man holy shit these are the best.
Part 1 is a superb achievement. Been a busy Saturday so I only just noticed part 2 and I’m really looking forward to it now. Thank you for this amazing channel.
Regards from Brisbane.
I spent some time in the Falklands in the late Nineties and learned of the "action" taken by the locals to scare the Argentinian troops. They explained by drawing there hand across their throat that the Ghurkhas would cut their heads off. The Argentinan troops deserted the positions facing the Ghurkhas.
Myth confirmed true on one of my tours with ghurkhas. Terry did the same.
@@kambhamra2324where'd you deploy mate?
Only found this channel recently but I love it …. Keep up the great work !
Dr H^3 has delivered... and down the rabbit hole I go.
Thank you for this awesome video, so many hours of excellent quality content on a war I don't know enough about.
I've always been fascinated by the Falklands War and I really appreciate the detail you have gone into here. 👍
Amazing, detailed account preserved hopefully forever on the webs. Well done.
Always welcome new content from you !!
This is by far my favorite series
Been waiting for this one. Good work!
Thanks for the excellent part II and conclusion. Love the detail that you never get in the typical 12 minute TH-cam videos.
Just what I needed for my weekend!!!
Awesome 2-parter. I had been waiting for this 2nd part with baited breath. Thank you.
Sweet. Been waiting patiently for this.
I'm a new subscriber and completely blown away with the depth of research in this video. This is fantastic and I'm now a huge fan. Thank you!
Content continues to impress. Love your work, keep on keeping on. Looking forward to the next one.
When the Falklands War started the TV Channels showed the daily update on the war. I have three 3-hour Videos I saved on my VCR.
Digitise them before they are lost. Records like this must be preserved, and one cannot assume that the national archives or the media themselves have kept the tapes themselves.
@@ghostdog688i 100% agree. History must be preserved, and it deserves to be remembered. In fact, we must remember history so we can learn. Not just about mistakes made, but about human nature itself and the individual stories that so often get forgotten in the grand picture
Just finished. That was incredible.
Both this and part one were absolutely fantastic. The best and most comprehensive story of the conflict I've ever found
What can I say? Yet another outstanding and comprehensive narrative of this conflict. The level of detail is simply stunning.
Excellent content which didn't show any bias. It was a great video & the description of the war itself fills in a few gaps.
I had 6 relatives & 1 friend go into that conflict & all came back. My friend was with 2Para at Goose Green & I could not imagine even when he told me years later about it on what it was like.
This is absolute top-tier history regardless of platform. Cheers to you and your fantastic channel.
Thank you to all involved as that was bloody marvelous !
Best in class-TY for in depth and new info on the land based Exocets. Great work!
Excellent, been waiting for this 👌
Those Vulcans blow me away, I've heard they were used in War games. A simulated attack against NY city in the USA. They got through TWICE despite the USAF knowing an "attack" was coming, subterfuge & radio jamming, radar kerfuffles. Two nil pretty good.
Appreciate the content! Can we get a look into the Australian defence landscape soon!
Thank you for a comprehensive and detailed account of the campaign
Excited to give this a watch!
In 1982 the Falkland's had only 5 miles of paved road all around Port Stanley, so additional vehicles were of little us unless 4x4.The first action of the Argentines was to change the side of the road you drove on.
An amazingly detailed history, well done!
this just got uploaded and i just knowits gonna be amazing so im alreddy hitting all the buttons because youre amazing!!
