Why? We eat everything in an oyster or mussel or clam. What makes a scallop so good it's bad? I'm 54 years old and have had whole scallops once in my life and the were AWESOME so what's the big deal? It's a freakin' shellfish just like the rest. All shellfish have sex organs, poop and everything else.

@@darthfushang1 i think everything is edible but based on experience the black gut may contain undigested small crabs or even sand.. if it were me, i'd eat all except for the black gut part.. so yes, even the frill.. and another thing is that the black gut will sometimes discolor your butter so that instead of a yellow baked scallop, youll get a weird black scallop

The easiest explanation is, Japan's built different.
(Specific) Fish, beef, chicken, eggs etc. from Japan can be consumed raw because they are meticulous, not only from the prepping, but down to the raising and environment of the food.
If the scallops are harvested from dirty waters, then of course you want to get rid of the gut. Much like any other sea food, if it's harvested from clean water, then generally, it's safe to eat raw.

His shucking skills are awful and slow lol and yeah the longer they're cooked for it goes tough. I cook mine for about 20 to 30 seconds on each side so it remains tender, and yeah I never wash mine under freshwater hence why I always take seawater home with me in a 10 litre bucket (with a lid) when i dive for my own and wash them clean that way if they've got sand in them, otherwise I leave as is if they don't. The downside is waiting for them to spit the water out before cooking or they splatter when frying them off. Gotta love our oceans down here in Godzone. I'm up in Whangarei.

Not not really at all. It may smell like it when cooking but once cooked it's has a texture of a cooked mushroom and taste like kind of like a sort of firm lobster. If you like seafood, like crab or lobster you'll love it. Normally I'm not much into oyster or fish in general but adore scallops. Very easy to cook and make also, although can be a bit pricey like $12 a pound from a fish market, which gives you like 18 scallops. Restaurants though easily charge like $30 for like 2
