I've just watched Eurovision 1987 for the first time without knowing any results (except for the Irish win) - and I liked it more than 1985 and 1986. The contest seemed to be too long (even though I'm a modern person and I'm used to 26 songs in the grand final - I'm just not used to see this many songs in 1980s), but overall it was fun. This is how my top-10 looked like right after I finished watching the Swiss entry (without knowing any results or any other people's opinions): 10. Iceland (it was somewhat boring, but I like the melody and it seemed obviously more interesting to me than three previous songs) 9. Yugoslavia (I didn't hope to see it this one on the third place overall, and it was pretty high in the mid-tear for me; Connor said Yugoslavia would keep sending that kind of songs - I hope I'll keep liking it) 8. Denmark 7. Italy 6. Sweden 5. Belgium (Belgium was the first one to make me wake up this time, so I couldn't help but remember it) 4. Portugal (I don't understand why I thought it was that good for me, but I definitely loved The Vibe of this song and performance; Portugal is really fighting with Israel for being my favourite ESC country of 1980s) 3. France 2. Ireland (this is one of my favourite Eurovision winning songs; I don't like 'What's Another Year', but I think this one is a deserved victory; the live performance seemed underwhelming for me - especially pressed in-between Finland, Denmark and Yugoslavia - but the winning reprise was really good) 1. Finland (I always forget about Connor's 'odd-numbered Finland' thing, but still it works on me like a charm; this time Finland even one - and it was a very obvious win for me, I was SO disappointed to see this song on the right side of the scoreboard) Also, as a person who put Gary Lux at my first place the first time I watched ESC 1985, I was pretty underwhelmed by his performance this year (though 16th place I put it on does not seem that low). At the same time, I liked Israeli entry - it was really fun and I even put it on my 12th place. So, I guess I was too cruel by saying I didn't like the beginning of the show. It is also fun that right after the show my top-10 basically consisted of two clusters of songs - the ones who were from 4 to 8 in the running order (Spain, running 9th, finished on my 11th place) and the ones who were from 18 to 21 (and also, France which was 15 in the running order). This time the songs coming in a row really boosted each other for me (and Israel - being surrounded by underwhelming Norway and Austria - for the first time this decade finished outside of my top-10).
Btw, for me the 'messiest' song was the Dutch one. I was bored in the beginning, but this absurd transition woke me up and I was staring in shock for a while thinking about how bad it was.
Also some notes: German entry felt to me like an embodiment of something that could be randomly accused of cultural appropriation (I'm pretty bad at Wind trivia - I don't know anything about them, though I can see that they have non-white members; at the same time, I remember their entries in 1985 and 1992 - and for me they seem like someone who do the whitest music ever; so, it was shocking to me when they've started singing reggae, though I generally liked it). Greek entry seem similar to Wham! for Terry Wogan and some people in the comments, but the first group I thought about while watching it was Hall & Oates. The bit at the beginning is literally their 'Maneater' (though I guess it was generally 1980s fashion).
1987 is a very up and down year. Production-wise, it's definitely strong, and I did like the stage, postcards, and host! The songs, on the other hand, are either really good or really bad. There's also a few of them that started off well enough (NED, FIN, LUX), but either key-changes or lyrics damaged them to the point I couldn't put them in my top. That being said, my top ten (I actually re-watched this recently!): 1 pt: YUG 2 pt: AUT 3 pt: NOR (I actually liked the soundtrack-feel of Mitt Liv, and it reminds me of a musical number. It did fall a few places since my previous ranking, though.) 4 pt: GER (I prefer this to Fur Alle--while the latter has grown on me since I first watched 1985, there were parts I felt like they were derivative. Lass die Sonner in dein Hertz, on the other hand, is bubbly and joyful and grabs you on the first listen. I also love the reggae influences!) 5 pt: BEL (top ten anime openings) 6 pt: GRE (A bit influenced by Wham, but still a really nice bop!) 7 pt: ISR 8 pt: ISL -- Compared to their debut, iceland's entry this year is a bit more serene. It conveys a melancholic mood well, effectively combining the quiet instrumental and Halla Margaret's pure vocals. The lyrics were also great too! 10 pt: IRE -- Easily the best 1980s winner, in my opinion. From the opening notes, I kind of hinted that Hold Me Now would be a great song, which it is. I love the sadness Johnny Logan emotes, and it just flows well. My only nitpick was the final key change, which wasn't necessary. 12 pt: ITA -- My favorite 1980s entry! I love the gospel influences and the longing lyrics, and Raf and Umberto show off their versatility (if I'm right, they're pretty well known for Italo disco during that time) with this song.
Good year, but still isn't as great as some of the early 80s years. Here's what I think! 22. Spain 21. Sweden 20. Luxembourg 19. Norway 18. Finland 17. Portugal 16. Iceland 15. Denmark 14. Also does anyone know that feeling when your last place finishes one place above your winner?
Austria is the one song from ‘87 that I still listen to regularly.
