- Star Fox 64 known in Australia and Europe as Lylat Wars, is a 3D scrolling shooter game themed around aircraft combat for the Nintendo 64 video game console. It is a reboot of the original Star Fox, and the only game in the Star Fox series to be released on the Nintendo 64. An autostereoscopic remake, titled Star Fox 64 3D, was released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011.

This is a near perfect video game. I love the fact that it’s about 55 minutes long but yet you can play it time and time and time again. Genius.
same as the original game. as short as the original was, it took me forever to get through the game on the other 2 routes. i remember how exciting it was playing a new level after having the game for quite some time.
Of course 1997 gave us GoldenEye, Turok, StarFox 64 and Mario Kart 64.

This game was so epic for it's time. I poured countless hours into this game as a kid, so many great memories.
I still think Star Fox 64 is up there with Zelda and Mario as one of my top favorite N64 games. I remember being really drawn into it by the cinematic quality of the game. Back then having any sort of voice acting in a Nintendo game still felt like such a rarity especially with how extensive it was in Star Fox. It made it feel like you were playing a movie and I really liked that. I also agree that I loved that you could beat the game in a quick amount of time but the different routes added a lot of variety. I think the graphics still hold up really well and I just love how the game constantly has you on the edge of your seat but you never feel too frustrated by it. It's just the perfect balance of game play challenge to appeal to both hardcore gamers and casual gamers. To be honest though, I never really played it that much for the Rumble Pack aspect. It was a neat concept the first couple of times I used it but eventually the Rumble Pack just felt like it was a cheap gimmick to me. I didn't need it to feel engrossed in the gaming experience because it was already an amazing enough game on its own. But I still love Star Fox 64 and I agree Nintendo should do more with these characters. I still need to pick up the new Wii U game sometime.
I know this is a 5 year old comment, but the rumble pack was the first of its kind and the rumble feature became a staple of all consoles ever since.
The most fun I've had on the N64 aside from Bad Fur Day and Goldeneye.

Back in 97 I got a 64 and this was the only game I had, man I love it so much!!
being an 8 year old playing this game during the year of it's release, I can't help but keep star fox 64 in my heart and will forever have a special place in my life. The journey to stopping Andross with the Cornerian Army and your fellow flymates from the starfox team is just amazing, such a brief story to it during the levels, but so engaging with it's characters, visuals and soundtrack. Starfox 64 is beyond epic and it will always be one, if not my favorite N64 game (I never truly played Zelda games tho so I can't say it's the best).
This was a game that really made me feel that I was in the middle of a very intense space battle.
Even today, I think this is the best shooter ever (without counting the unreleased StarFox 2,which is an amazing and very fun game too).

I've been getting into classic games recently. I just beat Star Fox for the Super Nintendo and absolutely loved it! I really hope to get Star Fox 64 soon!
I remember those Summer vactions my brothers worked summer jobs not far from where we lived, so during their lunch break them and their friends would come down and my mom would make lunch and we would play 4 player split screen Starfox, Mario Kart and Goldeneye until their lunch break was up...Good times.

I simply love this game. Perfect controls, fantastic varied environments, wonderfully voiced dialogue, and just a great sense of reward when you beat the game on all HARD paths and never lose a single partner or life... my favorite game for the console. Case closed :)
maybe i never tried the hard paths. i played a little of this as a kid and remember it feeling disappointingly easy compared to the original on snes. gonna have to try this out again and look into the hard paths.
i recently played some of this and made it to some of the more challenging levels and it's definitely a lot better than i realized. maybe even as good as the original, i should have given it more of a chance back when i first played it.
I've been looking this reviews up on my lunchbreak the last few weeks...N64 was life when I was I kid...love the reviews and the walk down memory lane. They all trigger so much nostalgia feels.
I've played this game so many times childhood memories looking back it could make me cry what happened to video games now, I mean sure you have cod and halo an other games but where else are you going to get games like waverace 64 diddy kong racing, golden eye 007, banjo kazooie, super Mario 64, 1080 snowboarding, bomber man 64, pilotwings64 cruising USA, Mario party 1&2 , legends Zelda, there's more but truly tell me I really can only say n 64 gave gamers classics that would ever be remembered and if they could ever make another classic like the n 64 did. It makes me cry knowing that n 64 gets no credit even though it brought criteria we use today like joystick 370 degrees rumble pack in game memory card. Back in those dad when I beat a game it meant something cause it was HARD, especially starfox on expert or waverace on reverse. Now I feel little excitement since games nowadays are great but the classics is where the roots began and where I truly became a gamer. All hail n 64

Awesome review Glenn. This my #1 favorite game of all time, it's the reason why I bought the 3DS. I've been playing the hell out of that game for a while. It's almost 20 years since that game came out, but it still has A LOT of replay value compared to many other games. The sequel is hopefully gonna be made by Platinum Games, the guys that did Bayonetta. Fingers crossed for.that to happen

Starfox 64 is a masterpiece. It is one of the few games i go back to every once in a while and still have a blast playing it even though i probably finished it a million times already. I just wish the game would be a little more challenging because apart from some hard to get medals it is really friggin easy imho.
Also i love the Lylat gibberish option its the only true way to play the game. ;-)

Yeah good old starwing was really amazing. When i saw that for the first time i actually said to my friends:
"God damn! This is the future!".
But to be honest its really hard for me today to enjoy that game. Have you ever played starwing 2? If you have what do you think about it. I personally would love to see nintendo finish the damn thing cause its really interesting to say the least imho.
i thought it was a cool game but they left it too long to make because they must have known n64 was being released and having a big game like starfox 2 would have slowed down sales

I wouldn't say its exactly easy getting all the medals on every stage and unlocking expert mode and on foot multiplayer. Fox in sunglasses!

This was the 1st game I played that really drive me to chase high scores through the ingenious medal concept, which was then used to excellent effect again in Rigue squadron.
There is so much that this game gets right, keeping the player coming back again and again. I can recall countless hours trying to get all of the gold medals and that’s not something I’ve ever been able to do.
I still play this game quite a bit due to its relatively quick run through. Like you Glenn, this is my favourite in the series and I’d love to see a new game that keeps these core ideas intact and then builds on them.
For me, easily a top 5 game on the system
Star Fox 64 was the first difficult game I ever beat on max difficulty, and with 100% completion too, getting a gold medal on every mission, which felt like a huge accomplishment at the time. It unlocked the ridiculous option to be able to compete in multiplayer on foot XD.

Star Fox 64 was one of those rare games for me where I played and beat it over and over again, and in time I mastered it, getting a gold medal in every level.
I have it for the 3DS, but I much prefer playing it on Citra on a 50” Samsung.
Absolutely loved this game as a kid and still love it to this day. I even played the 3DS remake and it too was great. I will agree, it was one of the best N64 games made.

It’s crazy that I missed out on this game when I came out. I’m just now playing it over the last couple of days at 38 years old. I never was into 64 back then. My little brother had one but I was playing my PS1 more and never gave the 64 a chance.
One thing you forgot to mention was the rumble pack. This game was the first to pioneer controller rumble, a feature that has become ubiquitous to console gaming in the decades since.
Great review Glenn. Having missed it on N64 I picked it up on 3DS. Love the presentation, character and atmosphere. My only small gripe is it requires memorisation to do well, something I struggle with as I don't get the time thesedays.
Rico its a game designed to be played multiple times so i think the memorisation actually helps the game be more playable as you can do some pretty awesome runs when you know the best routes and the attack patterns
I remember the game being sold out everywhere! we had to make reservations for rental from Blockbuster! Only to be disappointed when other people renting the game will extend it for another week! But one day we got a hold of a copy (rental) The game was so good we ended up extending our rental time! It's not just nostalgia the game is so smooth and action packed played some of it recently some slow down here and there but still holds up!

If your a true gamer, you've gotten all gold medals and you know all about expert mode where Fox wears sunglasses. That's right, sunglasses. And you can unlock playing as the characters on foot in multiplayer. Seems like not many people know this.
90% of my childhood was playing Star Fox 64. This is the only game I completed over and over. To this day I can still beat the game with my eyes closed. One more fact this was my first game in the 64. My standart was high after this game.
This game right here proved why the design on the N64 controller was important. Fuck the N64 controller haters.

I think this is actually the first game that I bought new. Of course, with the rumble pack. I played this game so much and no pretty much every way to get anywhere. It's so great! Great video!

I feel Starfox 64 is a solid game that held up well to time. When I first started collecting games this was one of the titles I sought out first. It stuck out in my mind as a solid, fun game worth finding and owning even after all the years had passed.

i haven't but it tempted me, i sold my 3 ds too early i think as i got it on launch day and then there was that massive lull when no games came out on it so i sold it

This was my most played N64 game. I must have beaten it every single day for a month straight when I was in second grade. I think the only thing that broke my addiction To Starfox 64 was when I discovered GoldenEye.

This is my #1 N64 game for sure, even though I love a lot of games on the system. The replay value is through the roof, the multiple paths are amazing to discover, the controls are great, and the medals are a true challenge.
Funny thing is this is a genre I typically don't enjoy but this is one of my top games of all time. Much like I don't like RTS but love Pikmin.
That advert was a true blast from the past, I long for game adverts like that again that draw you in & capture the imagination of the potential buyer.
It's surprised me that Nintendo haven't given us anymore Starfox outings in recent years & I don't class HD remakes as new games to me that is just copping out, surely it's time for new one.
i think it was pure 90s advertising, the editing on ads was insanely quick and eye catching whilst giving you a glimpse of the game unlike ads now which i think show a lot of the game off. id be so surprised if nintendo doesn't reboot starfox for the wii u, it needs a proper game and i believe they need to do it in house as the gamecube showed 3rd party devs just don't know what to do with it properly

I remember hours of me and my friends playing the multiplayer here, obviously it's not up with 007 or kart, but for me the mutliplayer with 3 buddies was always more fun than you gave it credit for
It deserves to be in the top 100 games of all time. Played it a couple months ago with my buddy and it was as fun as playing it as a little kid.

I just took Star Fox 64 last night, only by nostalgia, and it was awesome, it was the same diffyculty, the same fun, diversity of levels, i didn´t even remember how to get to the hard path, and i did it.
For me, in 1997 this game was perfection, is awesome how smooth is the way of flying the space plane, tank and the submarine, its true, the characters talk too much but it gives something that your are not alone on the battlefield, as the war itself. Great review, the music is perfect and i agree, no one remembers the multiplayer mode :s its weird why Nintendo never gave the sequels that this franchise deserved, GREETINGS GLEEN!

Lylat wars as it is named in the Netherlands, is just an epic and well made game. Even more than 20 years later I think its controls visuals etc are awesome.

Who cannot enjoy Star Fox 64? Its awesome and tons of fun. I even played it a few days ago and I'm terrible at it now (it has been years since I last played it) but I still had fun. As for the multiplayer mode, honestly I always forget that Star Fox 64 has multiplayer at all. I never had anybody to play the game with so I usually played alone...and by the sound of it, I didn't miss much by never playing multiplayer mode. Anyways, its such a fun game that can be played pretty much anytime. It may not look good for todays standards but its not about the graphics, its the gameplay that makes it fantastic.
what did you make of the 3ds remake?
I tried it once about 3 (maybe 4) years ago and sadly I don't remember anything from it. I remember it was still fun (and the controls confused me). Some things changed (graphics have been improved and sounds were different because the N64 and 3DS are different systems with different hardware) but it should still be as fun as the original.
N64 Starfox is the best version & one of the top games for that console. I absolutely love this game. I also enjoyed & appreciated the voice acting. It's not easy So kudos for the team for putting more effort in game development. Thank you the great review.
Easily one of my favorite titles for the system. My jaw definitely dropped whenever I'd go to the video rental shop and the opening cinematic would be playing on a loop in the demo kiosk. In fact, seeing those little characters running to their Arwings made such a huge impression on me (and my dad) that when Christmas of that year came around I woke up to a shiny new N64 under the tree along with a copy of this game. The same boxed copy sitting on my shelf right now. Awesome memories! :)

This is one of the best games ever. This game made me proud of have a n64 in that time. And i still enjoy a a lot this game in 2020
i just played through it on an emulator on my phone recently and it's still amazing. it feels unbelievable to me that you can play n64 and ps1 games perfectly on a little smart phone.
This game is definitely in my top 10 of all-time. Love it so much.
I remember playing this game and beating it multiple times in under 3 hours. The critics don't know what they're talking about, It kept me coming back.
yeah some were saying that they should have made all the levels sequential to make the game longer but i think that actually works differently in practice as that would kill replay ability
Star Fox 64 was the second game I played on the system, and I was simply mesmerized by its graphics and overall presentation. Not only did it run at 60 fps (a rarity on consoles), but it was endlessly replayable, perhaps in part due to its short length.
One of the best game ever, hopefully we will see a real sequel this generation.

I absolutely love this game, I still own and play my N64 copy pretty regularly. It's one of my favorites, not only on the N64, but one of my favorite games of all time.

1997, 2007, and 2017 are some of the best years of all of gaming.

Lylat Wars was one of my favourite N64 games I still have the original Box, Manual and Rumble pack but unfortunately I lost the actual cartridge years ago! It sickens me to this day every time I see that empty box :) I loved the branching levels and the replayability was so high for me, I think I spent more time on Lylat Wars than any other N64 game :)

Its so frustrating as I have looked eveywhere for it and no luck, I have a sneaking suspicion that I lent it or traded it with a friend that Im not in contact with anymore ;P I could just buy it again but it would be just my luck that the day I do that I'll end up finding the original copy :)
While not a personal favorite, it is a really good game and I'm very surprised they haven't brought back Star Fox yet. I think it would be a great fit on the Wii U.

One of the greatest N64 games of all time. It is timeless. I haven't played it in years, but every time I do I have the best time ever with it.
Though I had both NES and SNES I've never played a starfox back in the day. So when I saw Lylat Wars (as it was known here) I was intrigued (and because of the rumble pack) and bought it. Never looked back it was and still is an excellent game. And as always great review

Fun Fact: Sector Y pays homage to Mobile Suit Gundam, and the Battle of Loum. One of the Robots is even painted Red as Peppy says "Watch out he is fast!" If you're still not convinced at the very end the boss battle you run into a ship which launches 2 mechs to go after your squadron, defeat them and final boss is a white mecha. Mobile Suit Gundam the nickname for the Gundam was "White Devil" or in english the "White One." Still not convinced? The final 3 enemies including the Boss are Blue, Red and White, the colors of the Gundam. =D

Star Fox 64 was the first 3D game I have ever played (with polygons and such, Doom doesn't count). It was also the game that brought me into console shooters; Golden Eye and Perfect Dark soon followed my N64 library. It is the reason as to why I play inverted to this day.
It's the perfect arcade/score-attack game I've always wanted on a home console. Even though it's not normally regarded as a shooter, I always think of this game whenever the genre is brought up.

its such an epic game, i tend to not cover the big titles which everyones done but i don't mind dropping one of the well known titles in every now and again :)
The sense of accomplishment of getting all 30 medals (meaning 15 on normal and 15 on expert modes) was truly astounding to me as a gamer. This one will always be special to me.

Yeah same here. Going back through the game and collecting all the rings and performing all of the special tasks kept this title alive for weeks. Loved it. Deffo one of the best 64 titles.
This game just simply rocked! The variety in levels/vehicles and even got a rumble pack on first release. A 5 star game!!!

Remember getting this for Christmas. But we couldn't wait so we carefully unwrapped it, took out the game and wrapped up the box and played the game before Christmas :D

just watching this video makes me want to drag out my xbr trinitron, my n64, and my copy of this game. this is possibly my favorite n64 game. i completely relate to being blown away by it's transition from the snes to the n64. i loved the original, and the n64 version was everything i could have wanted it to be. every sequel since has just made the n64 version even more definitive. if they just did a switch remake of the n64 version, with nothing creepy added, i think we'd all be happy.

I actually loved the multi-player and we spent many hours with it...loved the on-foot code or however that was unlocked...
I remember playing this game. Constantly doing multiple playthroughs until I unlocked everything. Even kept playing after I got everything cause I didn't know I had already unlocked everything.
Star Fox 64 is just a classic, i played it at my buddies house, couldn't ask for a funner system the N64, RUMBLE PACK!!!!!!!!! HYPER kids love the Rumble Pack

The multiplayer wasn't too good but I still remember playing it quite a bit with my friends. I also remember playing training mode and seeing who could get the highest score before dying.
The main campaign is pretty fantastic. Multiple paths with varying gameplay and of course 2 different endings. This was something that was mindblowing to me at the time. I honestly never knew there was a real ending until years later when I finally got to Venom on an alternate path.
yeah i like the alternate ending and i wonder how many people still don't realise that!
