  • Star Wars Episode I: Battle for Naboo (known as Star Wars: Battle for Naboo on the PC) is an arcade-style action game co-developed by Factor 5 and LucasArts. It is a spiritual sequel to Star Wars: Rogue Squadron released two years earlier. Despite the similarities between the two games, the development team designed a new game engine for Battle for Naboo and included land- and water-based combat in addition to aerial combat.

    I have a hilarious story about this game:
    My family didn't always have the cash to buy games when I was a kid, but rentals from the video store were cheap. It was in the same parking lot as the grocery store and mom would often hook me up with a 5 day rental of choice when I went along and helped her shop for the week and load groceries. Me being like you a huge, HUGE fan of Rouge Squadron, I got excited when I saw this game on the shelf there. I didn't like it quite as much but I did still love it: it had much the same game play I loved and included speeder bikes mowing down droids and you could pilot Darth Maul's sleek black star fighter. Amazing stuff really! I remember going back for it a couple times but there was one big problem: the copy at the rental place had a really awful glitch in the cartridge where only on the final mission where you take down the big space station, it would fatally freeze the game with an awful buzz that required you to turn off the system. No matter how many times I tried, no matter how much I tried blowing in it or anything else, you simply could not finish that copy of the game. Oh well.
    Flash forward a few years: I'm a little older, and new consoles are in and N64 is out, the old rental place had stopped carrying anything pertaining to the old systems to make room for the new. The local EB games had a basket full of N64 cartridges piled up like firewood and priced about the same. I had a little bit of money and still had my old system and figured I would pick thru and catch up on all that stuff I missed for whatever reason. Found a beat up copy of Battle for Naboo for $3! Snatched it without a second look, took it home with some other stuff and popped it in, eager to run down memory lane and FINALLY see the ending. I have a blast and I get to that last level....and I was totally flabbergasted to once again get that same fatal freeze. At a loss for words, I got up and turned off the console, pulled the cartridge out and inspected it to find, in total fucking disbelief, nothing other than a big silver sticker on the back that read "PROPERTY OF HOLLYWOOD VIDEO".
    The bastards had wholesale traded in their old games to the EB Games store 2 doors down for credit to buy new console games, and I bought the EXACT same faulty copy that infuriated me so long ago. I still laugh about it. I guess I'm just not meant to see how that one ends.

One of my favorite levels was the boats vs vulture droids. I was like 7 when i owned this game haha hopefully you watched the ending on TH-cam by now, you totally deserve to see it.

    Hi Glen, Factor 5 completely rewrote their own N64 microcode and the Star Wars engine from scratch if I remember. They realised after Rogue Squadron that the N64 could do a lot more and used their skills to push it to the limits - ie 640x480, vast landscapes, realtime dynamic lighting, weather effects and with many more NPC's on screen at once - impressive stuff! I remember Julian Eggebrecht stating in an interview once that if Rare took what they learned from GoldenEye and rewrote the engine completely instead of just uptooling it they could have pushed Perfect Dark 2x as much with a smooth framerate.

    One feature of this game not mentioned in this review is that it has secret platinum medals.🎖 The stats to earn them were quite high (the level where you drive speeders all over the city was hard as frick). Earning all the plats in this game is one of the hardest things I ever accomplished in all my years of gaming.

    the n64 was really a beast of a console but most of its power didn't really get realized by developers til later on in its life with games like this one. looking at this game and many others that came out over the last couple years of that console generation, you can really see how much of a groundbreaking console the n64 was even if it didn't outsell the playstation. there's no denying that sony's console even at its best couldn't hold a candle to what the n64 could do at its best in terms of visuals. some of the later n64 games even gave dreamcast and playstation 2 titles a run for their money in terms of visual fidelity.

    • @bmac2814
      @bmac2814 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@160sharp yea that's bad examples man. Cgi cutscenes are made on a computer and put on that disc as just that....a cutscene. A video being played back. Requiring no graphics power from the console, just needing enough memory to store those on there. That's why everything in ff7 is all 2d photo images used for the background world. Bc it wasn't powerful enough to create such a large world like ocarina of time or majoras mask and render everything like all the polygons(triangles) or large 3d environments. I love the playstation. But that's its charm. Its power was no where near the raw n64 power, even without the expansion pack. Thats why some of my personal favorites like batman and Robin and driver 2( both games where you can openly free roam and explore and get in and out of vehicles. Really ahead of it's time. Gta was years behind both of those lol anyways) they have a 2d city backdrop to help you not pay attention to everything rendering in within 5 feet of your character and you cant see past 5 feet as far as 3d structures go. It uses a slight fog effect too like turok 1 did for the n64 to help that rendering only a few feet in front of you problem. Except all of turok was completely 3d and the ps1 games I mentioned were just characters and cars being 3d. Everything else 2d. Knowledge is power.

    • @160sharp
      @160sharp 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      B Mac yes the N64 has some advantages being 64 bit, however it doesn’t change the fact ps1 had some advantages over the N64, it basically changed the entertainment format for CD’s being the new standard, and also funny enough final fantasy 7 couldn’t of been done on the N64 it was weak in comparison to the PlayStation in that regard, look up a video that talks about how many cartridges would be needed to fit all of final fantasy 7

    The story for this game was hard to pull together, for sure, since almost all the heroes were off-planet. If I recall, the idea that finally worked was to keep the Federation at bay for as long as possible while waiting for the Republic to rescue you. A noble hold-the-line kind of thing.
    The space level was kind of interesting in that lack of terrain made it easier to just speed-run the level, taking out main targets. They had to build a crazy spaghetti of splines connecting the the generators to each other and the comm satellite in the middle, with logic at each junction to keep enemies on your tail. If you just tried to hit generator after generator, you woke up a group at each which followed you to the next. Eventually you had a huge swarm making life really hard - that was a bid to counter to speed runs, but it felt pretty fun in the long run.
    The level after this was supposed to represent comms coming back little-by-little so you had a chance to hit a lot of enemies temporarily out of commission. You had a minute or so to get as many as you could before the comms came back on line, thus determining the difficulty of the level after that first minute. The level eventually got reassigned to someone who didn't agree with this idea, which kind of nullified the point of the space level (though the resulting level was fun enough.) The original designer did get a chance to try this design idea again in a later game, and worked out well.
    It was an odd project, with the N64 approaching end-of-life. The game felt like a red-headed stepchild at the time, so it's gratifying to know how much some people enjoyed it. 🙂

    My and my bros picked this game up at Blockbuster when it first came out and we played the heck out of it for a few weeks before returning it. We later bought it for my big brother for his birthday so we played it even more. However, going back to it, It's not quite as good as I remember. When me and my brothers were young, we actually preferred the Starwars Prequals, but as we got older we started to lean more towards the original trilogy, and thus our interest in the game started to slip away the older we got. We eventually sold it and on a whim, we got Rouge Squadron, and we had a lot more fun with that. It's amazing how much aesthetics can effect ones opinion of a game. Still, Battle for Naboo is fun and is worth purchasing but only after you get Rouge Squadren.

    That lighting is good. I was thinking about requesting a game. But pretty much all of the opinions I would want to hear from you, you already made videos on those games. I'm thinking, maybe Tonic Trouble? (I already know you're going to say it's horrible). Maybe Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie, to hear your insights on them. Wait a minute, I was searching your channel and didn't see Mission Impossible! That is my request. I like the game.

    I remembered this game being decent. It felt like Rogue Squadron, but based in the Episode 1 era. Got this and Mario Party 2 as a gift from my cousin when he sold his N64 and games a while ago.

    Me and my brothers found this game to be a worthy successor to Rogue Squadron. It even introduced a mechanic that would later be included in Rogue Squadron II, namely the vehicle switching mid-level. My family never got a Gamecube but I did get myself the guide books for Rogue Squadron II and III thinking that someday I would get these games.
    I find it interesting that some people would be upset about not being able to play as certain characters from the movies. The gameplay was all about vehicular combat with the vehicles being the star characters and not their pilots. I never went into a Rogue Squadron game thinking I was going to be Luke Skywalker. I was thinking that I was going to pilot an X-Wing.

I never got around to playing this game even though im a huge star wars fan and played a lot of the games. I will have to pick it up but for some reason it just doesn't look like it would be that great. I've never been to big of a fan of flying while shooting games.

    I bought this when it came out, and I still to this day get a gross feeling when I think about it. I think it is partly due to the fact that I was sort of scrambling to buy anything new, but familiar at the time, and was severely disappointed with the game as a whole. It's not a terrible game, but if I were to choose one word to describe it, it would have to be "unsatisfying." I most definitely agree with you that it just dosen't feel like a Star Wars game.

    Played the shit out of it, Loved it so much. I wish someone would re-release a playable version on PC because i'd easly give it another solid playthrough and enjoy it just as much. The only thing that disappointed me from this was unlike Rogue Squadron it had no proper cockpit view with fully modeled cockpit, that alone lets you know that Rogue Squadron had love put into it and BfN was just to capitilise on the Hype around Ep 1. But i Loved it so much despite some of its cheapness.

    It`s funny in a lot of your videos you talk about the game coming out near the end of the life-cycle so nobody cared, yet it seems this is just when developers were hitting their stride with the console, they were familiar with it and could make the best games possible. The console was definitely short-changed, and I think we could have seen many more games with graphics nobody thought possible with it had the N64 just had a few more years. just look at the games released in 2000 and 2001, so many near-masterworks. It had like half the life-span of what it should have gotten.

      I'm not disagreeing with this comment at all, but, when you go back to that time the hardware/laser disc/technological advancements at the time - it was so hard not to be swept up in the hype of it all. I don't think any of the developers were immune to this and left the cartridge for dead. People were jumping on the PlayStation bandwagon, I remember it well because my brother and I wanted one bad, all our friends and cousins had one but we were at that age where 'if you want it that bad pay for it yourself' and that was never gonna happen.
