They are not court appointed bailiffs or debt collectors. They have no legal right to enter your property, you do not have to prove anything to them. And if they are visiting your premises in an official capacity, they are legally obligated to show ID and state their business. That conversation went on long enough. If it were me, the door would have been slammed shut as soon as he refused to disclose his reason or show ID.

I have a tenant who’s never owned a television and never watched one in her own home, she’s 89. The TV licensing people have kept on pestering for her to have a licence and she’s refused. They visited and asked why she didn’t have one and she explained it was because she hadn’t a TV. They told her it was free so why not get a licence anyway FFS She had to say for the umpteenth time I HAVEN’T GOT A TV.

4 years and counting now lads. In case anyone wonders, you are on a cyclic rotation of TV licence "warning" letters. They start off "Do you need a licence?" and progress to "We KNOW you don't have a licence" to "GET A LICENCE NOW BEFORE ITS TOO LATE" and finally "URGENT A VISIT HAS BEEN SCHEDULED ON to BUST YOUR CRIMINAL ASS" (or it may be any other date so get your TV licence now!). They just loop back to the start. I'm on my 3rd or 4th loop now.
I got a new one recently, asking to confirm I still live at my property, stating if I didn't reply they'd assume I no longer live there. So I ignored it and now apparently I don't live at my house because they chose to assume so without any reason for it. It's laughable how relevant they think they are.

He said he didn't need it because he doesn't use it as a TV at all but the guy insisted if he had a TV he had to pay. To be fair... an electronic device must accept any undesired interference according to ISO standards. If you didn't purchase the television with the intention of viewing live broadcasts, an argument could be made that it's the BBCs fault for broadcasting "undesired interference."

If I start broadcasting a looping video of my swinging wang, and I broadcast at the exact frequency of channel 69... that is interference that you did not intend. You didnt buy the tv with the intent of seeing my genitals... that was something I did to you, it's not your fault. An identical argument could be made for Eastenders.
When I bought my first home and moved out of my parents house there was about 20 letters from the BBC all using threatening language of visits/fines/court action in my new homes postbox. The BBC does tons of stuff beside their TV channels. I don't watch TV, sometimes use their streaming service (watching Ludwig atm) but I pay for my license as I think it is important to have a public broadcaster. The BBC is far from being perfect but at least they are not dependent on those with money and willing to use it to their advantage

I had someone recently call at my door in an attempt to do "tv research." I wasn't at home at the time so he put a note through my door informing me that he would return. Gladly, I thought. My neighbour called me outside to the fence between us when this efficient and very diligent promise keeper reappeared some few days later. Gullible me informed him that I would not be filmed on television (being the shy type us falsely modest ones usually are!) He assured me that I would not be filmed, and that sorted, the research began. He asked me countless times what my favourite to programmes are. I informed him that I did not have a tv licence and did not watch tv, as I would consider paying for the privilege of my viewing unrelenting repeat dribble of Ark related proportions a waste of money. I told him I watch all sorts of this pre recorded delightful manifestation of entertainment at will for free if I choose on my iPad and spend my money on much worthier pursuits. Satisfied with glee that my no longer smirking neighbour was disappointedly now slinking off into the back garden, having realised that no anticipated fine was in the offing, I carried on with the 'researcher's' hopeless and pitiful

TV licensing are well known in the UK for bullying people into buying a license even if they don't need one and trying to get any excuse to get people to pay up. Most people have nothing against the guys coming to their door, they just have a crappy job. But it is an irritant and can stress people out with constant badgering, and that's just not on.

What about saving the monthly letters up till you have, say six, and then post them back to yourself - keeping it going every day? Would the BBC keep paying for the postage? Then add another each month?

They start off "Do you need a licence?" and progress to "We KNOW you don't have a licence" to "GET A LICENCE NOW BEFORE ITS TOO LATE" and finally "URGENT A VISIT HAS BEEN SCHEDULED ON to BUST YOUR CRIMINAL ASS" (or it may be any other date so get your TV licence now!).
They just loop back to the start. I'm on my 3rd or 4th loop now.
I got a new one recently, asking to confirm I still live at my property, stating if I didn't reply they'd assume I no longer live there. So I ignored it and now apparently I don't live at my house because they chose to assume so without any reason for it. It's laughable how relevant they think they are.

(I moved into my property for sky on day 2 went into labour on day 3) on day they came to my house it was the morning after the night I was discharged after giving birth so not only did I have a tv for 1 day but didn't even know if I watched live tv of not. I had a new born baby a single parent on maternity leave so low income and they throw me a £300 fine. Disgusting next time I'm not telling them anything. I've been told before that apparently a relative of mine once had a licensing guy come in and ask him to pay licensing. He said he didn't need it because he doesn't use it as a TV at all but the guy insisted if he had a TV he had to pay. Eventually he got fed up, grabbed the hammer from his toolbox next to him and put it through the screen and said "there you fucking go, I don't have a TV" and the guy left. One of the most batshit, Glasgow stories I've been told from my family.

When I bought my first home and moved out of my parents house there was about 20 letters from the BBC all using threatening language of visits/fines/court action in my new homes postbox.
I literally hasn't even moved in yet.

I don't watch TV, sometimes use their streaming service (watching Ludwig atm) but I pay for my license as I think it is important to have a public broadcaster. The BBC is far from being perfect but at least they are not dependent on those with money and willing to use it to their advantage

I had someone recently call at my door in an attempt to do "tv research." I wasn't at home at the time so he put a note through my door informing me that he would return. Gladly, I thought. My neighbour called me outside to the fence between us when this efficient and very diligent promise keeper reappeared some few days later. Gullible me informed him that I would not be filmed on television (being the shy type us falsely modest ones usually are!) He assured me that I would not be filmed, and that sorted, the research began. He asked me countless times what my favourite to programmes are. I informed him that I did not have a tv licence and did not watch tv, as I would consider paying for the privilege of my viewing unrelenting repeat dribble of Ark related proportions a waste of money. I told him I watch all sorts of this pre recorded delightful manifestation of entertainment at will for free if I choose on my iPad and spend my money on much worthier pursuits. TV licensing are well known in the UK for bullying people into buying a license even if they don't need one and trying to get any excuse to get people to pay up. Most people have nothing against the guys coming to their door, they just have a crappy job. But it is an irritant and can stress people out with constant badgering, and that's just not on.

It is my understanding that the BBC wants every household to pay about 150 pounds for each television that receives live TV broadcasts but these days, many people do not, they get their shows from Netflix or Amazon, not live. Therefore, they say they do not owe the BBC for a license. Add to that the underhanded tactics the bill collectors use and they will take anything you say to the local Magistrate to apply for a search warrant. That is why the best thing to say is ... nothing at all.

Ive had the T.V. license lot at my door with the police and a warrant and i never let them in. The police cant help them they are just there to prevent a breech of the peace. I spoke to them out my bedroom window and at first the cop demanded i open the door. I told her to shut up you're only hear to prevent a BOP and if you help a private company to enter my property ill take a civil suit out against you personally. That shut her up and the police went and stood out of my garden. Then the BBC goon demands i open the door because he has a warrant. So i told him you have a warrant break the door down ( i know that no judge or magistrate will issue a forced entry warrant for a T.V. license) told him im going back to watching Netflix with my earphones so you can knock at the door all day for all i care. I watched the BBC goon talk to the police for a few mins then they all went. Theres no way they can prove you're watching live T.V. as they arent allowed to look through your window and they dont have the technology to see if youre watching live T.V. They also have zero authority over anyone and cant do anything if you close the door in their face without saying a word. Just ignore them i have been for years now
