    I loved Anxious People. Fredrik Backman is so good at getting you to care about absurd characters, and his dialogue is always top notch.

      @@alicemelin2553 Yes, I read the entire Winners trilogy (my favorites) and The Way Home novella. I actually DNF'd Britt-Marie was Here, so I suppose that's my least favorite!

      @@alicemelin2553 It was a combination of not enjoying reading about a gaggle of kids, and Britt-Marie being kinda horrible to everyone she encounters. It's why I've avoided A Man Called Ove, too - curmudgeon characters don't really appeal to me.

    The virgin suicides is one of those few pieces of litterature with a movie adaptation that is better than the book itself in my opinion. Its just too stunning

      disagree. that movie fell into the trap of perpetuating what the book was trying to critique. people lust after the book for its manic pixie dream girl aesthetics and that’s it’s legacy.

    I LOVED anxious people ❤ !!!! The little twists , the comfort this book provides is amazing (maybe the fact that I read it outside in my garden when the sun was rising or setting helped with the experience but either way……)
    If anyone knows something else like it plz recommend……

    Atonement by Ian McEwan is definitely up your alley. It's such a beautiful story about love, betrayal and the role of narration and narrators in people's lives. Don't look it up too much before reading it, if you ever read it. There's a huge twist and it'll leave you speechless and heartbroken.

    "The Trial" is a RIDE. I read it immediately after The Metamorphosis, and then watched The Trial film, as well. It's genuinely not a bad adaptation, really did capture that typical Kafka vibe; at once both unsettling and familiar.

    Virgin suicides - I recommend listening to the music when you come to that certain point in the book where it has a track listing. Really set the mood even more.

    I've only read Mexican Gothic from this pile. I liked it. I love spooky house stories though. I've also written one, Blackwood. :)

    1. i have not read tell me lies HOWEVER the hulu show was filmed at my university (before i transferred) and holy shit. it drove me insane. filming crews on a small campus + closing of buildings = making me want to boycott the show based on annoyance alone lmfao
    2. im currently reading the road and it is so good. i love the writing and it is curing my reading slump!
    3. i really enjoyed the audiobooks for anxious people and cultish, i hope you like the books as much as me!!

    virgin suicides is incredible! absolutely formative book and film for me and all my (female) friends aged 16/17, really captures the feeling of being a teenage girl and the tragedy of your youth/femininity being idolised to the point of dehumanisation and isolation. the decision to narrate the boys instead of the girls is pure genius. really hope you love it, or at least see why it is so special to so many women!!

    I read The Road in high school, and it has stuck with me ever since. There is such a disturbing scene in that book, and it is written so well that it’s extremely bone-chilling. I would say read that one first.

    Hey Jack! If you enjoy There There you’ll LOVE Ceremony by Leslie Silko. It’s one of my favorite books of all time! The writing style takes a little getting used to but you won’t want to put it down! It just the most heartbreaking yet hopeful story

    Just read Invisible Man and I'll be looking forward to your reaction. I loved There There, but many people didn't. As for Native American, I love Richard Wagamase and especially Medicine Walk and Indian Horse & they will both break your heart.

    Honestly just feeling very affirmed because a lot of these have been on my tbr for YEARS and I haven’t gotten around to them, but if Jack doesn’t keep up with all the releases when they’re new I DON’T HAVE TO EITHER.

    Reading Lessons now, enjoying it. Intested in your thoughts on Mexican Gothic. Imho it's bonkers. Her next book Velvet was the Night much better read. Anxious People is quite farcical, not Backman's best. Beartown is wonderful.

    So many of these sound amazing! But I am excited to hear what you think about Mexican Gothic because I...thought it was terrible haha. 😅 The Road was an intense ride though. (And also, since I know you love translated literature, I also recommend Mister N by Najwa Barakat; All Your Children, Scattered by Beata Umubyeyi Mairesse; and Seven Empty Houses by Samanta Schweblin. And also Chinatown by Thuan. 😊

    Loved Anxious People. The tv series is good too. Not his best book however but still great. Enjoyed Mexican Gothic but wasn't a huge fan of Lessons.
