This anime is a shoujo classic, however so many people still aren’t aware of its existence. I watched the show in May 2021 and the movie in February 2022. To me it doesn’t matter if your an og fan or a new one, as long as you watch Utena you are goated. Love you all
As someone who’s been a fan of it for 20 years, I’m always delighted to hear about people finding it more recently. I still think there’s nothing quite like it out there, and no matter when a fan finds it or how, you’re right-as long as you find it, you’re in for an incredible ride. 💖
I've always known about Utena ever since I first got into anime properly (around 2006), it's always sat in my mind, but for some reason I never actually watched it until the other week. I feel like I'm glad I came to it as an adult thought because if Neon Genesis Evangelion went a bit over my head at the age of 13 then I don't know what I would have made of Utena, but at the same time I would like to have wondered how hard this would've fried my brain at the time.
"...then my girlfriend turned into a pink supercar and we drove under a huge-ass mobile fortress of death, while bunch of Mad Max robo-cars chased us."
Is it weird that through the majority of the halfway point of the series to the mid-way point to this movie, I was becoming genuinely lost as to what the plot of the series even was anymore.... yet..... the thing that actually FINALLY put it together and made ACYUAL sense was the part where the title character got pulled into a giant monolithic car wash and literally transformed into a goddamn race car out of nowhere? It's like.... when you just hear that out loud, that SHOULD reasonably sound like the point where the entire series became just fucking ridiculous beyond reason, jumping a million sharks, and any sense of coherency would make you peace out of understanding the plot like a doordasher being informed that they're not getting a tip for delivering 35 breadsticks to a 3rd floor apartment complex... but instead, THAT of all things, ends up being the point where all the metaphors and subtext was ultimately pointing to turn on the lightbulb to make you go "OH I get it now." It legitimately confounds me that to this day, I can't tell if this ending is the LEAST pretentious thing i've ever seen, or the MOST pretentious. Least of all the fact that I actually mean this in a good way. At least... I'm pretty sure I do.
Ikr? The series and the movie are so weird to explain yet they amaze me so much. I know these characters so much that I wish ANYTHING for them to escape this place. I was so happy when Anthy ride the car.
I cant speak for his recent work, but Ikuhara always managed to be both a hugely artsy guy but also completely self-aware about it; I think that helps a lot. ALso as odd as the car bit is, it's also the most straightforward bit of the movie (if you dont read it too literally) the first half is pretty dreamlike and meandering.
OMG NO SAME, it’s the moment it all clicked for me - just the pure symbolism of utena being the vehicle to transport anthy to freedom but being unable to move without a “key” which is anthy herself finally accepting life and taking fate into her own hands ahhhhhh it’s just so good I cried, it really helped put in to perspective the entire show!!! at least that’s my interpretation, and it’s seriously so cool it’s left open to interpretation like that where everyone can make their own conclusions about all the symbolism! I gotta rewatch this series it’s just so good 😭😭
5:19 love the piano in this part. This whole track feels so triumphant, but that part especially feels like "It's over!!! It's finally over, let's go find our way in this new world!!!"
Can you really say your girlfriend loves you if she doesn't literally turn into a car to illustrate you taking control of your own destiny?
Yo girl, let me use your abusive brother alegory of power as an ultimate fuck you to your oppression !
So there is some truth of Queen's song "I am in love with my car" by Roger Taylor.
Well, that's a... very... complicated question.
Anthy: "Grant me the power...!"
Utena and Anthy: *"...TO REVOLUTIONIZE THE WORLD!"*
the sapphic connotations of this anime is just insane lol, Ikuhara's a genius he's way ahead of his time
Fym connotations
They kiss
Every single character in Utena is queer (yes even Chuchu)

I also recently watched both the series and movie about a month ago. I'm so glad I got into this.
