You're a rare kind of Apple content creator, with the "Keep using until it breaks" incentive, and not upgrading every generation. Strongly appreciate that.
Wouldn't say I'm an apple content creator per se. I have created content about some apple products but far more about other makes and models 😅 but I appreciate the kind words. Thank you
If it works for you then why upgrade. That's the issue with people these days, only want the latest and greatest. Thanks for recommending the Thinkpads to me
You're right, if something works, why upgrade? When my kids go to school, I will not be buying them backpacks. Instead, they will use my leftover plastic shopping bags because they also work as bags.
@@iiisaac1312What if their old bags are sturdier than the low quality new bags your gonna buy them. Like the bags that you cannot change the zippers cuz they are soldered. LoL
A phenomenon I’ve seen in Apple-centric channels is that they often talk about resale value when reviewing a product, which I never really understand. Good to see there are still reviewers still using their tech to the fullest.
still have my i9. CTO during pandemic for my bachelor degree, 32GB RAM with 1TB SSD, 4GB GPU as my last straw due to financial. now, pursuing my master degree with the same machine. i hope it can manage till im done with my doctorate.
Just picked up a 16’’ 2019 i9 with Radeon 5600m 8GB GPU, 32 RAM and 1TB SSD for 875,- euros! Mint condition. That is a really good price and i’m very happy with it. It’s a screamer!
Really love when you talk about stuffs you have been using for years, especially when you push it for 4 years or more. Expensive electronics like Macbook should last for years!
Time flies. I remember like it was yesterday when I watched reviews for this mac. It was highly praised for its speakers and mics. It's still is a good laptop and will be for few years to come . Much better than most of what I see in the wilds.
My work used to give me an MBP 16" i9 model. For about 7-8 months, there are multiple cases of the laptop started to restart by itself or simply won't turned on. On the extreme end, one of my colleague laptop got burned inside (there is smoke coming out). We are Android devs on a fairly large projects. These laptops will be put into stress almost every day and those i9 MBPs were definitely bad. We switched to M1/M2 Pro model and never had any problem whatsoever. A lot faster, a lot more battery life, no more waiting for 30-60 minutes on fresh project build
@@theryanthomasI respect you still using one of the older models still. I do music production and all these TH-camrs try and make you feel you need the newest model. I did use my 2015 MacBook Pro as much as I could up until like 2 years ago and I moved to the M2 Max. Best thing I’ve ever did because the plugins started getting insane on the CPU and would stall out the computer much of the time. Used my 2015 pro for 6 years no problem and probably could still use it now if I really wanted to but I felt it was time to upgrade.
@@tamalchakraborty5346 Using build system such as Facebook's Buck helps a lot in minimizing build times and resource usage quite significantly. But the efforts needed to convert and keep maintaining it (as well as making a proper documentation for the new hire) from Gradle is not worth it. Plus, Gradle 8.9 onwards start to get better and even more so with the project's architectural improvements that we do.
@@Theleochanit's surprisingly fine for a travel device if you can get it cheap second-hand. Even 4GB Chromebooks are still functional. Definitely not at full price though.
I’ve got one of those, in M2 spec though. I can’t tell the difference in performance over the M1 that sits on my desk. The Macbook gets the job done, but I have to keep an eye on the memory pressure. 16GB is definitely recommended.
I still use my 2019 16" Pro and can't think of the possibility of buying a new one. It's just so premium looking (more so than the new ones imo) and above all, so reliable! (knocks wood)
Careful, that thing has a flaw, it would deliver 13v into the ssd frying it instantly killing the computer, because the 13v power rail is right next to the 3v ssd rail. Might wanna back up your data
I bought an M1 with 16GB ram second hand for £700, it is well worth it, it is a huge upgrade over the Intel in every way, especially for quality of life, everything feels snappy and you almost never hear the fans, even during heavy workloads.
@@prebenjaegerFor me, the dual combination of pc gaming, and Blender, keep me firmly away from Mac. Rendering via Nvidia Optix is drastically faster than anything Apple offers, and singlehandedly makes laptops viable for what I’m doing with them. Even on battery, the RTX 4060 is really fast at Cycles renders (such as when making shaders), and is efficient enough to get a few hours on battery. And PC gaming is a tough nut to crack. It’s probably the main thing holding back PCs from transitioning to ARM tbh, as there’s a lot of performance sensitive legacy in there (a lot of which will never see further support), and it’s doubtful anyone can/will invest in a Rosetta-like solution specifically for that audience. Really old stuff will probably run fine via non-accelerated emulation, but many things 2010 and newer will probably be lost without porting (stuff like Fortnight would undoubtedly be ported), or hardware accelerated emulation.
I don't have the latest technology, in fact some of the technology I use is quite old. It's not because I can't afford new tech, but I don't see the point in getting rid of something just because it's old if it does the job fine. Admittedly, I'm not an Apple fan, but even when Intel Macs lose support for newer versions of macOS, they can run Linux and so they can still serve a purpose instead of being obsolete paperweights.
I'm watching this on a 2017 MacBook Pro using the OpenCore Legacy Patcher with the latest Sonoma. I replaced the thermal paste with Thermal Grizzly Carbonaut, and this machine is still a beast. I also use it for full-stack JavaScript development.
Mine is also from 2017, altho mine was the remodelled into the space grey one. i agree tho, these macs still running. it Fr even beat out my fathers thinkpad lifespan
I still use my 2017 MacBook Pro (mid-range model w/16GB and 512GB SSD) for office productivity tasks. The battery and keyboard were replaced about a year and a half ago. It's now out of support but since it's used for non-development tasks, its still a viable machine in my lab. I'll probably get 10 years of use out of it.
I’m sticking with my old Intel MacBook as well. I can run Linux natively. I can run Windows natively. I can change/upgrade my SSD. It has a good pre-butterfly keyboard. It has USB-A ports.
My biggest issue is the cost of RAM on ARM Macs. 16GB should be base across lineup, and 32GB should be a retail-avail config for lower end models with the majority also carrying 64GB. 8GB is laughable.
Recently helped a coworker pick up a refurbished i7-equipped 2019 16-inch as he wanted to make the switch from a Windows machine and he's loved it since. Took a bit of fiddling to get everything working as he had on his previous machine and he's had no complaints since. You're absolutely spot on about keeping stuff until they break, I myself jumped up to an M3 Pro 14-inch from my trusty 2014 Air as it was far too slow and I wanted something that would last me another decade. Good stuff!
About the warm feeling, I find it uncomfortable how the new ones are just too cold to the touch. I write code for a living and having a cold keyboard deck all day just feels uncomfortable to me.
My main issue with M1/2/3 is limiting the max output displays. For real, why. We have the latest Intel MBP 13" and is able to drive 4 displays at the same time.
You are my new favorite. Thank you. This is the kind of reviews we need more of.

I guess using things until they break is the right thing to do. It is the right choice for both the pocket and the planet. Most laptops from the past 5 years are still very capable today and since your MacBook has a pretty good spec, you can (easily) still using it for some more time to come.
Some people forget that normal Prosumers want their machine to last them around 6-8 years. That is the average lifespan for most business and workstation laptops. So, there are people who bought top end Intel MBPs in 2021 who will use them until 2029. Plus, using one with a 6900 XT eGPU and external monitor is great if you want to game on a Mac. Bootcamp support too! Simply put, ARM isn't ready yet. It needs another year or so for Apple to really give it full Intel capabilities.
Totally on board until you mentioned the intel capabilities. Other than bootcamp style issues (including running virtual machines), my M3 Mac is far more capable than any Intel MacBook made. I can’t think of a single Mac app that runs any faster or has any more features on an Intel Macbook over an Apple silicon MacBook. Including those running in Rosetta. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. So barring the extra hassle and lost performance you get for emulating windows and its apps, apple silicon has far surpassed Intel MacBooks.
@@kamdenmcleanmovies The day something other than an Ultra or Max series chip can beat a 6900 XT is when Apple Silicon wins. It needs another year in the cooker
@@RobloxianX so the 1200 dollar computers of today have to compete with a computer that cost 5000? The price bracket of a 6900 XT + powerful MacBook was higher than the base level price for a max MacBook Pro. You’d never say “Yeah the Toyota Supra I bought in 2018 is way faster than the Toyota Corolla I bought in 2023, the only car that competes is the 2023 version of the Toyota Supra, and therefore Toyota hasn’t improved their cars”
This is also still my daily and definitely my favourite computer I’ve ever owned and should go down a one of apple’s greats, alas it probably is time for an upgrade but I will dearly miss my 2019 16 inch. This was one of the very rare times apple went back on something’s just to deliver a better user experience and it showed, little things like the speakers and improved keyboard were great upgrades.
I still use it myself. As much as I want to move to Apple Silicon, I’m just not ready yet. I just renewed my AppleCare+ (I live in the UK) and got mine in 2021 with AC+. Lastly, I paid well over £3,000 (student price), so there’s no way I’m upgrading just yet. I usually upgrade my computer hardware after a good 10 years.
If you do your work sufficiently, why keep spending money for the next flashy thing? Same applies for phones. Especially now that the technology has matured so much where upgrades are mostly incremental.
Having used both the 2020 Intel Macbook Pro 13 and M1 Macbook Pro 13, following are lifechanging once you have experienced it. 1. Not getting burned under heavy workload 2. Fan staying silent in meetings when zoom is running 3. Double or more performance 4. Even for heavy use, it lasts a whole day Ignorance is bliss, and I believe you can live happily without experiencing it, but this shift has been "why haven't I done it sooner"
The 2019 MacBook Pro's have a crippling and depressing failure where an SSD buck converter chip (which downscales voltage for the SSD's) randomly decides to blow up sending 12V to a 5V max SSD chip making your data go boom out of nowhere so I wouldn't call these "trusty old" by and means. If you want an Intel MacBook Pro go for the 2015's.
@@theryanthomas Don't get me wrong the 2019 16 inch MacBook Pro still looks great but it's a beauty item/prop. I wouldn't rely on this as a work machine unless I was forced to.
Got a used maxed out late 2019 MBP 16" w 1TB, 64gb RAM, i9 8 core 2.4 Ghz, and an AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8gb for under 1K. I use it with Premiere Pro and it's been great so far. Handles 4k footage smoothly without having to create proxies. I bought a notebook twin fan cooler pad from Amazon for $22 to offset any overheating issues which hasn't been the case. The cooling pad lowers the CPU temp by at least 6c.
I got this exact same spec (but silver) for INR 60,000 (around 545 GBP) from a local second hand dealer. It's a fantastic and quite possibly the most beautiful and elegant laptop that Apple will ever make.
I still have a 2011 iMac that works well though limited on speed. Has 32 RAM and 1 TB and still does what I need it to do for design and digital art. Also have the 2019 MBP model with 16GB ram and 1TB storage and though it gets hot, still handles all my digital files just fine. I’ll be saying 100 a month until it breaks down and I’ll get then the newest one refurbished
I still use my 15" mid-2012 (bought new 12 years ago) running Mojave for sound design, music production and graphic design. The thing is, there will always be something faster and/or better. If whatever the item is works for the user, there is no need to upgrade for the majority of the people. I may be biased because I am retired and have all sorts of time and 40 years of computer evolution behind me.
I am a new to your channel and subscribed your channel. I watched this video from my macbook pro 16 intel 16GB ram. I never felt the need to upgrade to the latest and the greatest as this laptop is still very powerful and get the job done 👌
You're a real one! Looking at a 2019 16' I9 32GB 1TB strictly for music production. They are so cheap with so little battery cycles its mental not to grab for creatives on a budget. Thanks for your honesty! Of course if I had $4k sitting pretty id go for a maxed out M series.
I upgrade when I feel I need to, and I also rarely buy the latest and greatest, but what used to be the latest and greatest. I just retired my last MBP, a 2015 near top spec 13", which I bought used in 2016. My new-to-me MBP is a M2 Max 12/38 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD with still two more years of AppleCare+. Saved myself $1K compared to new, and it is flawless in condition. Absolutely love how much faster it is compared to my old MBP!
I am still rocking my 2015 MBP for 9 years now and it runs fine. The screen has staingate, but I just connect it to an external monitor. I replaced the SSD and battery this year, so hope it will run for another 2-3 years. Like you said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. You should get the MX Master Keys. You gotta complete the MX set!
I upgraded to a M1 MacBook Pro because my dual core i5 2017 MacBook Pro was hardcore struggling. My 16 inch M1 Pro is phenomenal, and is still stupid fast. I’m going to use it until it can’t keep up. That’s what I did with my 2017.
@@theryanthomas The 2019 16-inch MBP uses a cheap and unreliable buck converter to convert power for its SSD’s NAND chips. This cheap buck converter (less than 3 dollars when bought in bulk) tends to fail randomly. When it fails, the NAND gets fried by 13 volts, and the entire Mac becomes an unusable brick. Louis Rossmann and iBoff RCC have made in-depth videos about this issue. The TPS62180 is also present in all 14 and 16-inch Apple Silicon MacBook Pros, but in those models, it only powers the USB ports, so its failure wouldn’t be nearly as catastrophic as in the 2019 16-inch model. Now, I’m not saying that all of these buck converters will eventually fail, but the thing is you never know. It would be best to back up your data regularly.
@@theryanthomasdamn I was thinking of getting this MacBook Pro 2019 16 inch you had in your review with the i9, but seeing how it’s a ticking bomb makes me lean towards shelling out the extra money and getting one with an M series chip.
I've noticed you have the same kind of case around your MBP, and I got a funny story for you. I have an intel MBP 2020 that also heats up like crazy; I was in apple store for the final check-up before the apple care ran out, and naturally complained about the overheating. The guy told me that the case contributes to the problem. Well the laptop now is out of warranty and so I won't be taking it out of the house, and I decided to ditch the case. It makes a huge difference - let hot and the fan goes off less frequently! Go figure. That said I am very happy with my MBP M2, as it is silent all the time. But two machines of different architecture is a must have for a developer.
This was a great machine for work until I started to have random thermal shutdowns when using Zoom. Although the integrated graphics were probably good enough, good old Apple decided that you had to use the external graphics as well and no option to switch! Ended up getting it replaced by a 14” M1 Max MacBook Pro which wiped the floor with this and was much quieter. However, I would have been happy to stick with the 16” Intel version if they could have sorted the issues with the graphics switching and thermal shutdowns. This was an apparently known issue that this combination of processor and graphics card could overshoot the thermal cooling capacity of the system! 😢
I prefer Intel over Apple silicon because they support Windows and eGPUs and come with discrete graphics which all Apple silicon lacks. Im really fond of the 2019 iMac which is essentially fully upgradeable unlike the M1 and M3 iMacs
They really should bring support for Windows on ARM via Boot Camp (essentially making Macs Copilots+PC I guess) and support for eGPUs (and therefore slotted GPUs for the people with Mac Pros). I'm certain this could happen with just a software update (although there would probably be better results from Apple also making their own GPUs)
I just bought a new m3 pro, coming from a 2020 intel i7. I loved that Mac, despite it's terrible battery life when doing mild work, it served well. but I was forced to upgrade since my motherboard somehow rusted.
8:54 it is thermal throttling i use the exact same macbook myself in such a thin body it does heat up and thermal throttle the hardware is powerful enough to do nice gameplay and watching videos but it does heat up and lead to thermal throttling
I just had to upgrade mine from the 2016 MacBook Pro. I loved my 2016 mbp, but it was getting too slow. finally upgraded to the m3 pro. The difference is night and day.
I had owned a 2015 MBP 13' with 16GB ram for about 9 years before I upgraded to the 14' M1 Pro and it's been a joy to use. Battery was giving out, fans too loud and just slowed down alot, I made the most out of that intel machine, I'm sure the same can be done with the M1 Pro beast! Jumping on the M series platform is a must! I hope apple can give 16GB ram standard with the upcoming lineup.
Still using my Macbook Pro 16 i9, 64gb ram, 8gb gpu, 1tb storage. Been with me since the very start of my company, and is still my main tool for website development years later. I am waiting for a new m4 Mac Studio and that will be a big upgrade for work, however I still indend on holding onto my Macbook, it will just be used for general use.
Interestingly, one thing I really appreciate about my gaming laptop, is how quiet it is. Don’t get me wrong, red lining my Legion makes a “Whoosh” that can be heard multiple cubicles down, but when putting the same sort of work that made my previous Dell seemingly scream for mercy (such as doing anything in Blender), the Legion is whisper quiet.
I love this type of takes, media wants to make everyone feel like something from 5 years ago that cost a lot of money is already useless, and the fact that the price literally plummets after a year of use is stupid
This is how I feel about my M1 MacBook Pro. 8 GB (sadly) and 512 storage. It was either 16 GB 256 storage or more storage, I chose more storage but maybe I shouldn’t have?? I LOVE my computer and I want to clean up the hard drive a bunch so it feels cleaner and maybe runs smoother too. All OF APPLES ISSUES RECENTLY ARE SOFTWARE
Both options are shit. There's no getting out of this one. You need at least 12-16gb ram and 512gb ssd storage today. If I had to choose, it would be the 8GB/512GB. I can't live with 256gb ssd storage.
@ bro my 2020 M1 runs 8GB Like it IS 16….. apples hardware is and always has been superior……… 256GB on a computer is dog shit base model but 512 and above is a sweet spot for basic computing. I literally play games in my computer and they run really well… apple is the best technology company, even with all their software and moral flaws; what does that say about Google, Samsung and every other company itching to have 1% of what apple has/had. The IT factor. Actually being cool because it was GOOD SHIT. Not because they thought they were cool “like Samsung making mockery apple ads instead of actually just making good Samsung ads”…… it’s gross. Ya’ll make fun of apple to be relevant?? And apple did it first in the 2000’s with the Mac vs. Windows Justin Long Ads
@@NotGarrettG I strongly disagree with the “always has” part of that statement. Apple not always had the best track record. Also, 8GB definitely is not the same as 16GB ram. You can literally get a 16GB mac and compare the difference. Apple may have scored with their M1 processor, but that also doesn’t excuse their past mistakes. And oh boy there are many, many disgusting mistakes, if you can call it that. In fact, the MacBook featured in this very video has a fatal flaw.
@ 100% agree. What no opinion on every other company coat-tailing apple? From the Jump apple was the tech company for the common-man, yes over the years “apple tax” existed and pseudo-exclusivity, but if apple can actually get their shit together again, they could be one of the ONLY tech companies relevant by 2050. Apple does things slow on purpose, for longevity. My question is why can’t any other company compete? Literally if all of apples competitors came together they probably COULD beat Apple in market share and relevance but every other company is too busy thinking they’re good and cool but Samsung made a watch literally identical to apples ultra watch…. Samsung waits for Apple to make a bad ad (ipad m4 ad) for Samsung to have a CHANCE to make a decent ad… and they need Apple to do it! It’s wild…. I recently got lended a Samsung 22 Ultra and it is garbage. The software is malware Ad dog doo-doo and all the buttons are on the same side?? And damn near the same size??? Apple has it right by doing volume adjustments on one side and the power button on the other…. Stuff like that Apple just got right…. And everyone else is trying to change a winning formula..
This video is amazing. This is what I need, in a world full of pressuring me to spend so much money. I will admit, I plan to buy an M3 Pro next week. I have a mid 2022 MacBook Pro, but it has 8gb of ram and it is amazing for everything else except video editing. I do not like the lack of iO either, it is very inconvenient. I paid $1400 for my computer and got absolutely robbed. There’s no pro screen, no pro chip, no pro anything about it except the price I paid. Before the redesign of MacBook pros, bringing iO, great screens and even better battery life, MacBooks were not the value king, as they now are. And, honestly… they are an engineering beauty, the new ones are.
Im using 8th gen i5 with 16 g of ddr4 ram running sonoma on a 14 inh dell latitude 7490, other than the struggle of hackintosh now i have near 100% working build and im so happy, been using it for the last 6 month and its been great. Its really fast, wonder how much faster those m laptops are if this feels almost instant in every way
I still used my 2017 MBP 15" with i7 I love the Touch Bar tried a few times to upgrade to both the M1 and M2 MBP returned them and went back to 2017. The things I miss from the newer models no fan noise, better speakers, and 120Hz mini led screen. Someday I'll switch maybe the M5 redesign with an OLED screen that will be a big enough change to justify. As far as ports it just looks cleaner with USB-C ports also I never use a HDMI display just USB-C/Thunderbolt. Plus the older design just looks sleeker in my opinion. Oh and the notch on the screen drove me crazy I absolutely hated trying to hide it with a dark background and made the Apple bar thicker taking more screen area.
I think it's totally valid. I think it's even worse with the iPad, where there are so many youtubers that try to hype up the latest model, when it barely does anything new. I have an m1 iPad pro 12.9" and the new m4 model is literally the same if not for being slightly thinder and having an OLED display. The iPad cannot replace a laptop for me since im a software engineer, so it's an e-mailing and MS Teams machine for me.
I upgraded my 2017 MacBook Pro 8gb to a 2021 14 inch when the M2 Pro was released and I could get one on offer. Sure I wanted to upgrade sooner but my laptop still worked and didn’t fail to run what I needed it to and because I waited I got a great deal. Sometimes even if you are reaching the point where you want to upgrade it’s good to assess if what your using does what you need it to & unless it’s broken at least wait for a good deal on something great.
The issue with the video stuttering on the macbook is probably because you're using the software x264 encoder instead of the intel quicksync encoder which is a dedicated hardware encoder built into the CPU
I was using a Mbp 2015 till last week. Just bought a second hand 14 M1 Pro Mbp… end of story, its faster than my buffed MacPro with a RX6600XT… My wife still use a 2019 Mbp, still very fast, but you can upgrade to M processor, unless you are using window, you can find now decent M Macs for cheaper….
Careful, that thing has a flaw, it would deliver 13v into the ssd frying it instantly killing the computer, because the 13v power rail is right next to the 3v ssd rail.
still on my late 2018 13" MacBook Pro with the Base 8GB Ram and i5 (got the 512gb SSD back then) still going and will still use it, until major updates stop. so like a year after its last OS Version (probably next year)
I got a 16” i9 64GB RAM 512GB SSD 5500m 8GB FOR $900 last year off eBay. Found the same machine but with 1TB SSD 5600m 8GB immediately after for $1200 that I wish I’d gotten instead had I known about it, but velcroing a 2 TB Samsung T7 with a clever setup of 2 right angle usbc adapters + 5” flat 20Gb usbc cable so the ports don’t go trough massive fatigue solved the storage limitation without looking ungodly ugly. (The Velcro being command strips help with the eventual removal, I’ll redo those in a different pattern to hide the pull tabs entirely under the drive for an even cleaner appearance later, this is just to see if it’s even worthwhile to do in the first place.) for travel, I simply remove the drive and cable and stow in my cable bag. I’ll replace this once the m5 chips come out, but coming from a 15” mid 2012 MacBook Pro, I have been very happy with it.
Just got a 2016 i9 16” for $500. Needs a battery but it’s just as good as I remember it being when I had it originally (I sold the original one I had a few years back and got this as a beater to get me by). I’m waiting in the new M4 pros haha
I thing that is a pretty healthy view on new technology. I often find myself looking for new tech, a new phone or new Tablet, just because new and shiny is always more attractive. But if i step back or just go to a store and try out the new pixel, i realise that it still is a phone that i can Watch TH-cam on and listen to Music 😂 so i‘m gonna stick to my iPhone 13 because it is still smooth and can do everything i use it for!
Im still rocking my macbook air mid 2013. Qualiy of keyboard is way better than new macbook keyboards that get shiny keys after heavy use. Besides I don't need to throw my laptop away when my SSD fails.
I only became a macbook user (or apple in general ) after the M-series. What are some genuine things that are much better on Macbooks pre 2019 aside from looking good?
i agree that if it's not broke don't fix it. BUTTTT apple silicon is definitely an exception to that. it's insanely good not to upgrade. also once you get an m1 or m2 mac you won't have to upgrade for another decade at least
With these kind of specs why would one want to upgrade? I recently got a new M3 MacBook Air (8/256) for my schoolwork and some minor workload and I’m not planning to upgrade for like 6-8 years or something. My iPad 5 (2017) which I’m watching this video from is still in a great state.
FACTS! (From a 2018 Intel i9 MacBook Pro owner and user and with near identical setup and ailments!) 😂😅 And tbh, would love to switch but I don't care what Apple says; it'll always be a "little off" (after migration assistant/Time Capsule Restore) and that cost is immeasurable. And as much as I hate that f***ing butterfly keyboard, I'm used to it now. Ugh. 😑
I have a 2017 Intel Mac, yes the butterfly key board one. But, I would like to pose a question here, Why the heck does everyone hate the butterfly keyboards? i have been using my mac for like 7 years and the only problem is the "D" key falling off like a month ago, which is impressive for a laptop built to last 6 years. other than that there isn't any significant problems to note off. But, i am planning to change it to an M4 later, since im already running 7.8 Gb out of my 8Gb of ram from opening Task manager and TH-cam on safari (because chrome wont run properly no more). Also one of my USB C port accidentally got water damage, i think that thing is fried. plus im starting to have memory problems ever since i switched from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone 15 (those HEIC files are getting outa hand ngl, 5,4 Mb for a photo?). Im definitely upgrading to an M4 if it has 16Gb base! I also agree with you, a lot of people just like to complain about their devices, whilst in actuality a lot of them are still capable of doing tasks relatively well. almost every tech youtuber claims that the Intel macs are garbage, but mine can literally run War thunder on medium graphics. even tho it was the cheapest macbook pro at the time, with no spec upgrades.
Yup, very measured take. I wonder if anyone did anything custom to improve the thermals / cooling of these macbooks, it was (well, still is) absolutely atrocious. I know that the Intel chips themselves were far from efficient, but Apple absolutely crapped the bed with the cooling on this one. Anyway, I'm in a similar camp. I've been drooling for almost 2 years for a better laptop, but I'm still using my ASUS G752, a beefy 17.3" 4kg laptop from 2016, with a quad core i7 6700 HQ and GTX 1060. I got it to 64 GB of RAM (something I knew I wanted from when I bought it 8 years ago) and 2 fast SSDs + 1 HDD. It still works quite well. Switching to Linux also helped in this performance department for my use case (I'm a programmer) as it is much better than on Windows. Granted, my decision to not upgrade yet isn't just because this one still works. It's also because I want my next one to also last me 7-10 years. And to have 128 GB of RAM at decent speeds (which nobody, excluding Apple, has, yet). Hoping Arrow Lake doesn't flop and that Framework will do an Arrow Lake Framework 16 by mid 2025. Hopefully with CAMM 2 too.
Totally in the same camp as you. It would be fascinating to see if anyone could improve the thermals in these. That said, there'd still be the efficiency and battery life issues..
great video! MacOS sequoia is out and available for macbook pro 16 intel, if you have updated, would you please make a review video about the update, smoothness, features and battery life for this macbook. thank you!
Tnis might sound crazy but I used my 2014 MBA until last year. It was syper slow on heavy workloads but I had all the time and it wouldn't quit on me. Had to switch to an M1 MBP when I accidentally spilt some coffee on the keyboard, but it still works alright after replacing the keyboard.
@@theryanthomas I personally think purchasing that M1 was the best tech purchase I made in a long time. I got a used one with 16 GB ram for £800 and that thing can run almost anything, even image generation using SD 2.0 in moderate settings. I don't find any app support issues with my workflow. Maybe the only issue I face. But I'm also planning to buy an intel MBP to use with eGPUs.
I run Debian and it just a pain in the a** to use it on an ARM machine, while x86 just works right out of the box. I can't count how many times a docker container failed to executed on an apple m-chip because of some bizarre error...
i used a 2013 macbook pro till around 2020 when the M1 was released. have been using that M1 since, they are amazing machines! hopefully M4 macbooks will be a good upgrade when they are released.
Currently I'm using a 3-year-old Surface with an i5 chip running on Windows 11, but it’s struggling to keep up with my workload. My daily tasks are extensive use of Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, and Teams), Zoom and Google Meets, video and audio transcription and editing, designing on Canva etc and managing websites on WordPress. My current Surface can’t multitask anymore, as the frequent freezing and slowdowns are becoming unmanageable and it heats up pretty quickly, too. Is this MacBook Pro able to handle all my tasks? That is what I'm interested to know as I am looking for a refurbished MacBook.
NEVER MAX out an apple product unless you don't mind it just breaking. i got a very similar mbp 2019 16", whose logic board has packed up/is on the way out. £700 for a repair. just keeps rebooting. cannot fix with OS reinstall. B button is broken. i'm not impressed with apple. having said this, my mbp from 2014 still works. waiting for new mac mini
To be honest with you brother I have weighed up just buying a new desktop PC for work as I seldom travel, but then I'm reminded of the horrendous Adobe Premiere stability on Windows on my current desktop and I'm not sure I could deal with that all the time 😭😭
You're a rare kind of Apple content creator, with the "Keep using until it breaks" incentive, and not upgrading every generation. Strongly appreciate that.
Wouldn't say I'm an apple content creator per se. I have created content about some apple products but far more about other makes and models 😅 but I appreciate the kind words. Thank you

Very true
sometimes you can't really know whether you really need to upgrade or not until you try the newer one.
You're right, if something works, why upgrade? When my kids go to school, I will not be buying them backpacks. Instead, they will use my leftover plastic shopping bags because they also work as bags.

A phenomenon I’ve seen in Apple-centric channels is that they often talk about resale value when reviewing a product, which I never really understand. Good to see there are still reviewers still using their tech to the fullest.
Yeah I'm the furthest thing from apple centric haha
It's because apple centric channels just re-iterate every single piece of marketing that apple puts out, word for word.
yeah its really weird when one of the greatest feature is how fast you can ditch the device

You should be fine
Just picked up a 16’’ 2019 i9 with Radeon 5600m 8GB GPU, 32 RAM and 1TB SSD for 875,- euros! Mint condition. That is a really good price and i’m very happy with it. It’s a screamer!
Really love when you talk about stuffs you have been using for years, especially when you push it for 4 years or more. Expensive electronics like Macbook should last for years!
Absolutely! Stuff should last
That's insane!

I bought an M1 with 16GB ram second hand for £700, it is well worth it, it is a huge upgrade over the Intel in every way, especially for quality of life, everything feels snappy and you almost never hear the fans, even during heavy workloads.
Agreed. Best laptop I've ever had. Used to be a Windows laptop guy but switched to M1 Pro 16 GB
same, was looking at a 16" i9 but got an M1 13" instead for the better battery life. does what I need.
M1, M2 , M3 MacBook keyboard keys get shiny after a while cuz apple used a low quality abs plastic.
@@nazaritubesthat’s all MacBook keys I’ve ever used
I don't have the latest technology, in fact some of the technology I use is quite old.
100%. Wish everyone had this mentality
The small storage (and extortionate cost to upgrade) is what’s keeping me from “upgrading”.
Good point
I'd bet that's been a problem since the iBooks and PowerBooks
Not a problem with my 2011 and 2017 MacBook Pros. The former was easily upgradable. The latter came with a decent base.
My uncle has that one and won’t let it go. Even if it overheats like crazy compared to my Air M2.
As an intel user, those Heat are really great on a cold day
This was refreshing to watch. It’s easy to get carried away with all the new stuff
Well as a person who has an M2 air coming from intel, i must say it is a game changer.
My specs are : M2 Air, 16GB Ram, 15 inch display

I had to use an app to disable “Turbo Boost” on mine to keep the heat and fan noise down. Still did okay until it died a few months ago.
I still use a 2018 15” MBP. It’s still a beast. Runs everything. I will probably run it until it’s dead.
1. Not getting burned under heavy workload
2. Fan staying silent in meetings when zoom is running
3. Double or more performance
4. Even for heavy use, it lasts a whole day
Ignorance is bliss, and I believe you can live happily without experiencing it, but this shift has been "why haven't I done it sooner"
I've been reading into this since the first comment about this on my video. It doesn't look great. I've backed up my machine
@@theryanthomas Don't get me wrong the 2019 16 inch MacBook Pro still looks great but it's a beauty item/prop. I wouldn't rely on this as a work machine unless I was forced to.

I never felt the need to upgrade to the latest and the greatest as this laptop is still very powerful and get the job done 👌
If it gets the job done, why change? Thanks brother
That’s what I did with my 2017.
maybe the protective plastic case contributes to the laptop heating up even more.
The 2019 16 inch MBP's are ticking time bombs because of the TPS62180 SSD buck converter
Oh damn. Could you elaborate a little bit please? This has me worried 😅

Interesting stuff. Thanks for the heads up
This was a great machine for work until I started to have random thermal shutdowns when using Zoom.

How can you focus on work if fans goes crazy loud??
I’m with you brother! Except I’m not really into updating to a newer model.
Watching this vid on the same setup, can't find any reason to replace it.
Careful, that thing has a flaw, it would deliver 13v into the ssd frying it instantly killing the computer, because the 13v power rail is right next to the 3v ssd rail.
08:41 that becasue maybe the GPU don't support encoding while recording and it uses CPU only ?
still on my late 2018 13" MacBook Pro with the Base 8GB Ram and i5 (got the 512gb SSD back then)
still going and will still use it, until major updates stop. so like a year after its last OS Version (probably next year)
Soild opinion. Much appreciated. 6:00
Brilliant m8. 💯. New sub
That's a crazy deal! Yeah I'll move on eventually too I think
Just got a 2016 i9 16” for $500. Needs a battery but it’s just as good as I remember it being when I had it originally (I sold the original one I had a few years back and got this as a beater to get me by). I’m waiting in the new M4 pros haha
I was using it until 2 months ago no usb-c was capable to charge the battery :(
Ahhh that's a nightmare
I thing that is a pretty healthy view on new technology. I often find myself looking for new tech, a new phone or new Tablet, just because new and shiny is always more attractive. But if i step back or just go to a store and try out the new pixel, i realise that it still is a phone that i can Watch TH-cam on and listen to Music 😂 so i‘m gonna stick to my iPhone 13 because it is still smooth and can do everything i use it for!
Im still rocking my macbook air mid 2013. Qualiy of keyboard is way better than new macbook keyboards that get shiny keys after heavy use. Besides I don't need to throw my laptop away when my SSD fails.
bro, I'm still using my 2016 Intel MacBook pro 16 inch while watching your vid...
Nice one, considering about buying the M4 very soon...
bro same, i'm also considering to buy an M4. altho mine was from 2017
what specs are you planning to get?
I only became a macbook user (or apple in general ) after the M-series. What are some genuine things that are much better on Macbooks pre 2019 aside from looking good?
i agree that if it's not broke don't fix it. BUTTTT apple silicon is definitely an exception to that. it's insanely good not to upgrade. also once you get an m1 or m2 mac you won't have to upgrade for another decade at least
for 1. it doesnt have as much soldered down things, yea, thats a GOOOOOD thing apple, you know, the company that cares SOOO MUCH about the planet
With these kind of specs why would one want to upgrade? I recently got a new M3 MacBook Air (8/256) for my schoolwork and some minor workload and I’m not planning to upgrade for like 6-8 years or something. My iPad 5 (2017) which I’m watching this video from is still in a great state.
are you... a Simracer? I've seen iRacing stuff in this video, which instantly made me wonder
FACTS!
(From a 2018 Intel i9 MacBook Pro owner and user and with near identical setup and ailments!) 😂😅
And tbh, would love to switch but I don't care what Apple says; it'll always be a "little off" (after migration assistant/Time Capsule Restore) and that cost is immeasurable.
MacOS sequoia is out and available for macbook pro 16 intel, if you have updated, would you please make a review video about the update, smoothness, features and battery life for this macbook. thank you!
Talking my language! I'm a senior developer and still use the legendary 2015 15" MBP. If it still does the job then why upgrade?
Good choice! Is that the Retina pre-touchbar one with the force touch track pad?
@@theryanthomasthat’s right. Still a totally usable daily driver for serious work, even all these 9 years later!
AHH the ol' coffee trick 😛
@@theryanthomas I personally think purchasing that M1 was the best tech purchase I made in a long time. I got a used one with 16 GB ram for £800 and that thing can run almost anything, even image generation using SD 2.0 in moderate settings. I don't find any app support issues with my workflow. Maybe the only issue I face. But I'm also planning to buy an intel MBP to use with eGPUs.
@@RootSystemHash they certainly look tempting those eBay deals!
yep mine is 7 years old, still does absolutely everything shot of gaming, no reason to upgrade
Fr tho, idk why ppl beef with mac for not being able to play games. coz i can legit run War thunder medium graphics
@@rabbaniazzahra1784 they ignore that thin and light windows laptops that are also mostly arm based play games worse than macs these days
Hey cool video!! Would you ever consider the MacBook Pro with the Base m4 chip??
