We used these in boy scouts . Pro tip and a spot on the side for wood legs to angle in a slot added to the sides!!
Fantastic job. Great video too; (straight to the work and no clowning around talking gibberish) - enjoy the camping!!
I love the use of the wood you have on hand. No $100 for a single 4*4 panel you'd be deathly scared to make a mistake on. Simple plywood and some OSB thrown in for good measure. This is a summer project for my sons and I to do. Thanks for the simple idea and design!
You're very welcome and thanks for watching!
I used to do a lot or Black Powder Rendezvous camping. These camp kitchens were in every camp. Usually accompanied by a second (more open box) that contained the kitchen supplies: food stuff, napkins, paper towels, as well as spices and others things. This second box set beside the first in a table or in some cases was purpose built to set below the stove box and the two them had a small low table that they sat on to get the stove to cooking height. I see comments on weight...yup heavy weight. The lightest were purpose built for weight reduction wood skeleton clad with 1/4 Cider on the outside to make up the box and the shelves inside. Thanks for bringing up some good memories.
WOW!!!!! When I was in Boy Scouts of America, we had several of these in our troop, but they were probably twice the size of yours. GREAT BUILD!!!!!!
Thank you! My son's Boy Scout Troop has about a dozen of the large old style Patrol Boxes so my goal on this one was to see how small I could make it.
Outstanding Video, Easy to undertandt, Short, Concise, Straight to the point, No BS. The best is, You can make your own measurements
Thank you very much!
Many of the other designs on youtube are too out of reach for the majority of us common folk with minimal woodworking skills and knowhow, and much less tools. You sir, showed us a simple way to do do it and it could even be done with a hand saw, hammer and nails. Thank you!
Thank you very much!
I was looking for ideas other than drawer systems to build a kitchen in my suv! I like the drop down door and I can bolt the box into the platform so it can be easily removed. Thanks for sharing this.
Great design, and I really appreciate the practical, simple approach to building it. Well done!
Thank you very much! I try to make the presentation as simple as possible!
Very nice! Perfect size for my grand caravan. Thank you so much. 👍
That was pretty nice, I can't believe that all of that stuff fit inside---
Thank you very much. I redesigned this box 4 or 5 times to make everything fit inside. I've taken it camping a few times now and it works great!
That is the cutest little Ryobi drill. I've never seen that one before.
It comes in handy for detail stuff and small spaces.
I had to view this twice because it was good! One of my camping wish list & or a peppers survival kitchen. But need one that I could store canned goods in too! This project reminded me of The Pampered Camper guide by Bill Riviere!
Thank you very much. My goal for this project was to make it as small as possible but it could definitely be expanded to include can storage.
I would make a different box for you canned goods and other meals stuff.
Awesome piece!!! Thanks for the great idea and presentation!!!
simple organize and owesome
Great work my friend love it..
Bist wishes..
Excellent!!
Amazing. Like your channel from Viet Nam.
👍 good ideas
Great build!
Thanks a lot!
So cute!
❤ love it
Awesome video. I'm looking to build my own chuck box after spending my whole scouting life around them and this was insightful. One question though, why did you use nails instead of predrilled and using screws?
It's made out of 1/2" plywood to keep the weight down.If you don't get the screw centered right, it will poke out of the side.
Here is my dilemma. I could never put stuff back the way I took it out. Ha. That was one legit build. Thanks
When you have the bare necessities and the box is made for your gear it would be hard to shift anything around.
Please make me one! Great video!
Awesome.
The minute of looking at the plan and talking to yourself is soooo relatable LOL
That happens more often than not. Thanks!
Hi you are so amazing the things you build are awesome im into wood working but lack a lot of the right tools i need a power planer and would love a joiner anyway keep doing what you do im a subscriber god bless
Awesome job now i want one,,,,,but where is the beer bottle opener OOP'S ,,LOL
Could you make this with 1/4” plywood? Lumber is so costly right now, curious if it will hold up at that thickness
Personally, I wouldn't trust it to hold up to any abuse whatsoever.
Simple is ALWAYS best ! 👍👍
Thanks!
I did not like the glue, nails, and the screws driven in without pre-drilling holes, but hey, it works! Very nice box you made, light, compact, and so useful for camping. Unload on a picnic table or tailgate party and set to go! Very inspiring. I would love to know what table saw brand you used. Seems like you dialed a knob to adjust the fence each time.
Thank you for watching! The table saw is made by Skil. The fence has a small handle, I just tap it a little with my hand each time.
Great box! Thanks for the straightforward video.
How did you determine the placement of the shelving? Did you place everything on a table as you'd liked it packed and then take measurements, or did you build it and then get items that would fit the various cubbies?
I designed it all on the computer first using dimensions found on the web for all of the items. I then went and bought everything and stacked it using scrap boards and refined the sizes. The box is built around the items in it.
When designing small spaces like a camp kitchen I think it wise to plan/acquire for what you will put inside first, then design from the inside out. But even with years of family camping, you take different gear for different kind of trips. I have planned for my largest hopefuls on shelf (but not heavy cast iron). I can always go more minimal - reduce it down when 1 or 2 of us travelling & fill with more food and less dishes/pots & smaller stove.
Nice
Joli travail
Intéressant
What product did you use to seal the wood?
It was Amber Shellac.
TaDa!🎉
I am very happy with the design and it still surprises every time I get everything to fit back inside.
So why did you build such a nice box and finish it with crappy flake board? I really want to know. Why?
Thank you very much. I made this project out of leftover 1/2" plywood and I ran out so I used some OSB that I had laying around.
How’s that nail gun I’m thinking of getting that or a mitre saw next
I'm very happy with the nail gun but I use my miter saw a lot more than I use the nail gun.
How much does the box weigh?
How can you reduce weight on the box?
Don't put the cast iron skillet plate in it.
Very useful! Maybe a little too heavy for me.
It's not too bad if you take the cast iron plate out. Otherwise I'm good to carry it about 50 feet by myself. I get another person to help if any further than that.
i would have made it taller so it can be used outside without a table or truck bed supporting it either collapsible legs or a separate stand that can be added to it otherwise pretty great
I would have made it this exact same size so that it can fit into my small car.
Do you know about how much the box weighs empty?
I would guess about 10 to 15 lbs.
HOW ABOUT SHOWING US THE PLANS& A DRAWING WITH DIMENTIONS OF THIS
You can find all of that information on my website: funwithwoodworking.com/product/smallpatrolbox/
Why the switch to OSB for the front hinged door?
I accidentally cut up the piece that was supposed to be the front door and made it into the shelves. I had to use the OSB because I ran out of plywood.
FunWithWoodworking Gotchya. Thanks for the vid
Im amazed at how many arm chair quarterbacks and safety Nazis there are in the comment section. If you don't like what hes making turn it off, if you have a better way of doing it take the time to upload your projects. First video of his I have watched and I will subscribe and support his channel. Thanks for the ideas
Thank you for the kind words.
😎👍👍👍👍👍👍👍nice
Can you post the measurements for the pieces of wood and how many of each
You can find all the measurements and step by step direction on my website: funwithwoodworking.com/product/smallpatrolbox/
could have taught some scouts to use machines to cut and let them assemble it with screws. woodworking merit badge. just for an idea.
This was my first one so it was a prototype with a lot of trial and error. We had plans to have a merit badge class at my house later in the year but COVID restrictions stopped it from happening. We are hoping to do it later this year depending on how everything turns out. Thank you for the suggestion.
Hi. What is this box size?
You can find all the sizes here: funwithwoodworking.com/product/smallpatrolbox/
Is that 3/4 inch?
No, it is actually 1/2". I used the smaller size to help keep the weight down.
Great design! I like how you used the plastic covered box and a couple of wood spacers to size one of the compartments. Is there any particular reason you did't use plywood for the front doors too?
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much. I made this project out of leftover 1/2" plywood and I ran out so I used some OSB that I had laying around.
what are the sizes
You can find all the dimensions on my website at funwithwoodworking.com/product/smallpatrolbox/
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hollywood nail gun huh? No reloading, nice!
No crown guard - dangerous.
Thank you for caring.
I wish I had the tools to make one.
You can make it with basic hand tool, just takes more effort...but do able.
👍🤘😎
👍
Wish he would share the measurements before sawing each piece.
All of those measurements are available on my website: funwithwoodworking.com/product/smallpatrolbox/
Which tacker do you use?
It's a Ryobi cordless crown stapler.
Why do you call it a patrol box?
That is what we call them in the Boy Scouts.
No screws?
Yes, there are screws in the piano hinge, clasps, and handles. Everything else is glue and 1” staples.
Bruh, bruh, glue and screw! If you want it to last
Thank you for your excellent advice.
showwwww
You didn't give any measurements or show any plans. Thanks for the waste of time slick.
Thanks for watching!
