I'm a trucker and have been thinking of starting a channel about cooking good healthy food on the road. My first thought went to cowboys and how they cooked on the trail. This might be exactly what I need to make. Brilliant idea
There are a bunch of us drivers. I have been cooking in my truck for 32 years. A channel is a great idea so we can share ideas. My most used appliance is a mini insta pot 3 quart and single burner propane stove.
We're building out a cabin on some land over this next year. Gonna be doing camping trips to clear the land and then the cabin. This is just the right size to throw in the truck and then the cabin. Solid base but more than functional.
My dad built one of these from a pattern in popular mechanics....I think. That was in the early 70s. It was part of our camping for years. He built one for me about 15 yrs ago. I'll never go camping without it. These things are fantastic!❤
My dad made a kit box that fit in the bed of a trailer made from the rear of a 50s pickup. (These type trailers were very common in the 60s) It was big because we were a family of 6. 😊
Several years ago, I was cruising a second hand, junk store. I found a Tin Chuck Box. I scooped it up! I think it was made by Coleman, probably in the 60's -70's. But it has no markings on it. Its uber light weight when empty. It opens up and un-folds. A simple design that offers alot of storage. I had never seen one before or since. But its very cool!
Been using something like this with my scout troop for years. I didn't build it, we inherited it from a defunct troop. It's a fantastic piece of kit. Your smaller version looks perfect for family camping. Great video.
We used something similar, but larger when I was in the Girl Scouts. I really appreciate how well thought-out and precise the craftsmanship of the hosts box is. 😊
Good use of your Kreg Jig, with all the pocket joinery! It looks well made. While its heavy. A small portion of the weight comes from your camp dutch oven. But ya can't toss it out! I am sure the Kreg company would love to use your plans!
Yeah, a lot of folks have mentioned having them in the boyscouts. I'd love to see one of theirs eventually. I got the idea from a fly fishing book of all places. Just built my design around the cooking equipment I had. Thanks for the comment
I've seen vintage examples of something like this available in antique stores and peddlers malls. Now that I'm into camping, I can't seem to find any. Your design may serve as an inspiration for me to go ahead and make my own.
I built one for myself about 12 years ago. Use it every year for my annual week long camping trip on the door step of the Boundary Waters. Mines a bit bigger and gotta remove the 10 and 12 in cast iron before moving it solo. But the functionality behind them is amazing.
Dude... I just finished my van build out (don't worry, its all DIY and not some million dollar rig) and was looking for something like this since I still cook out side. THANK you for the cut list, big time saver. Peace and love
I'm so glad I found this video when i did. I was planning to build the REI chuck box / the first chuck box you built but I like the simplicity of this one way better. way less hardware & weight which makes so much sense. Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely. Yep! The first round was basically the REI box. While the spice rack looked cool, I found myself more frustrated by the flip up lid. It made setting up the stove more of a challenge. Good luck on the build!
I met a gentleman that has a similar chuck box. He said his grandfather made it when his grandfather was in his 20s. I thought it was the coolest thing. The chuck box continues to serve after 3 generations.
If you look around, there are better models of the 'Supoon', one which has 2 articulation points so it becomes a ladle as well as a spoon and spatula. And a baby one which is really great for scraping stuff out of tubs and jars - I can butter a slice of bread with what I can scrape out of a 1lb tub of butter-oid after i've scraped it with a butter knife. They have graduations on the inside so you can use them for quick measuring (if the light is good).
Man, that sounds rad. I actually found the supoon randomly at a store while traveling but it definitely made me curious about what other cool new cooking gadgets I was missing out on. I'll have to check that out
Most underrated piece of camp equipment!! My grandpa built one just like this for his family, passed it to my dad, and my brother is still using it! May good memories behind that little plywood box. I like your design. Maybe it’s my turn to make one
After watching this video the other day, I ordered the spatula through your link. It arrived today and I’m very happy with it. I can see why you selected that one. I’m not getting rid of my GSI RAKAU Wooden Spatula but adding “RSVP International Endurance Kitchen Tool Collection Flexible Stainless Steel, Dishwasher Safe, Spatula” to my arsenal
I use the cereal container in my potty tent. All TP goes in that. Remove the trash bag and toss. It's great for a trash can with the snapping lid. Great chuck box. Perfect size. Mine is so heavy and empty, it just stays home and is a place to organize my kitchen gear. Well done video.
Thanks Barb! I stole the cereal container idea from another channel called @boundfornowhere - love that set up though. The snap lid keeps it from spilling on bumpy roads. I appreciate the compliment!
a thought popped in my head when watching this. you can turn the hinge drop door into a magnetically removable cutting board -plastic or wood. removable for cleaning of course
First video of yours ive seen, and i feel like we already know eachother. Good food, and LIVING life! Great mentality surrounding constraints... Thanks for sharing!
This is a nice tidy solution for a truck kitchen. Simple and effective. I use backpacking gear as my foundation, cooked with a Solo wood stove for 15 years. Just bought one of those sheet metal backpacking wood stoves that collapse flat. Finicky to setup but easier to cook with than the Solo. Main drawback is it doesn't keep the coals from the surface below like the Solo does, but not hard to find a rock or sandy patch or sheet of metal. I mostly boil water for all my cooking, don't do much frying. Thick soups are cheap and easy and filling and can be whatever flavor and texture you want. I like the Huel yellow coconut curry hot meal as a base, add walnuts, beans, avo oil, spices, soy sauce, when not interested in making one from scratch. I like the versatility of the dutch oven but it adds quite a lot of iron to the food and men aren't suppossed to supplement with iron. Stainless steel all the way for me, even with the potential sticking when frying. Cooking right in the coals of a campfire is fun too, ash cakes are good. Skewers, clay wrap, leaf wrap, steam pit, all sorts of fine campfire techniques. Pour over coffee is great, been my main way for years. Switching back to the aeropress, more efficient use of the grounds in full immersion and it removes those oils that raise blood pressure that french press exposes you too. Fast too, pour over is relatively quick but can take a while to drain. Aeropress forces it out.
Thank you! Those sound like some solid well thought out cooking set ups. I do love cooking over a fire whenever possible. Especially in the winter. Man, that Huel curry you mentioned sounds delicious. I'm going to try that out. I appreciate the comment and support! Cheers.
@HeyJonMoore Ya dude, I highly recommend that huel curry as a base for easy meals on the go. A bit bland on it's own, but add whatever and it becomes a satisfying stew. I'm thinking Iwas wrong about the aeropress, it's good but fiddly. My previous pour-over wasn't great, but a good one that doesn't wick drops along the underside is the best way to make coffee for sure. I'll look for a nicr steel one like you have :)
Happy to help! Good luck on your build and let me know if you have any questions. I have detailed plans available on Amazon for $2.99 if you’re interested too. Link is in the description. 🤙 I appreciate the comment!
This is amazing. Have almost the exact Coleman stove and right now all gear is in 2-3 different bins. Got a saw and some wood. Might be a summer project! thanks for the great video.
Thank you! Yes, I've definitely been in the plastic bin black hole before too. This thing makes cooking so much more enjoyable. Good luck on the build!
Check the Lodge L5OGH3 7" Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Fajita Skillet. It should be able to nest in or under your dutch oven. Also, I love chuck boxes rather than the soulless Milwaukee Packout boxes all over YT. In the Boy Scouts, there was an arms-race in District Troops' chuck box setups.
Make a video about what and how you cook using the Lodge pot and lid. You could do a whole series of your most frequently made recipes. Love the video, short and to the point.
Great video! I was about to build the REI version, but when I saw your “Gen2” version, I liked it better. I’m outfitting a 2 door Jeep Wrangler, so smaller is definitely better. I’m also using tubs to hold some of my other gear, and amazingly enough, the footprint is identical so it fits perfectly. I am considering one change - I thought of moving the stove to the top and put the heavier stuff on the bottom. I have the same Dutch Oven and I know it can be heavy. I had to look for smaller plates - the enamelled camping plates I have are just too large. I have the box built, and just waiting for the shelves to dry before putting them in! Thanks again!
That's awesome man! I'm stoked you made one. I liked my original REI version but it was just too bulky. Those msr plates have a much smaller footprint than the other enamel one's I've seen. Anyway, hope you enjoy the new chuck box. Cheers!
It’s good to know that you get descriptions on what you use so maybe on your next video when you’re cooking we all know what you have an inventory hopefully you come up with some menus
Thanks for the comment. I have a short video about what I eat on a regular basis here: th-cam.com/video/VmvYiZcTx3g/w-d-xo.html I plan to do some recipe videos in the future too. Cheers!

Cool chuck box! Love the little Dutch oven. We have a larger one because our kids used to camp with us and bring their friends, but now that we are empty nesters, we really need to downsize! We actually live about 35 minutes from the Lodge factory and their factory outlet store.
Thank you! That totally makes sense. I'd say anymore than two people and I'd have to go with a larger Dutch too. Sheww hopefully you can score a deal at the outlet 🤙
We had these but about 3 times as heavy and handled with 1/10th of the care, lol. I’m sure this would work great as a mature adult who isn’t going to leave dirty dishes in the thing for weeks at a time, but oh boy I have terrible memories of these.
Love your design. I've built a couple of land-based chuck boxes and a few water-based galley boxes. I wanted to check your plans out, but there's no way to save your Kindle book for later.
Thank you and I bet those are awesome. I appreciate you checking out the designs! Unfortunately, it seems like Kindle books can't be saved. I think it will show up in your Amazon browsing history though.
The chuck box idea was very popular in the 50's - 70's! But due to their size and weight, the popularity started to go down. The idea is still good, and lighter materials are now available. Maybe its coming back "in vogue", as the kids say!?
I saw one that had a second box that slipped over the chuck box that was basically just the legs and was the table you sat the chuck box on top of so you didn't need a table 😀
You should! I have some plans for sale on Amazon if you’re interested in building this exact box. Link is above. Cheers! And let me know if you have any questions
I built a generic one from Filson's website. It was clunky. Built an even bigger one for my bro-in-law who has a family, then built a stripped down one from my imagination and it's almost exactly yours
Dang man, I have just been using a cardboard box lol This is freakign awesome! Thanks for sharing this, much appreciated!! Stoked I'm in before you hit 1k subs! keep up the good work! only a few more to go.
Thank you! Ya know I think it boils down to a desire for freedom and the opportunity to travel/spend time outdoors. Great question though and I appreciate you asking. Happy holidays!
Nice video and the chuck box looks great. While i dont do truck camping, my work takes me the entire length of the east coast and as far west as Arkansas. On some of my trips i pack a ‘kitchen’ with much of what you shower in this video. I take a liquid fuel Coleman stove rather than propane, but virtually all the items you have in your pack, i keep in mine. If i can offer a suggestion to add to your list (although it wont fit in your chuck box) is a pressure cooker. I have a 6 qt (the smallest size) made of aluminum, so it’s not very heavy. It can seriously expand the number of dishes and recipes you can make on the road. Pulled pork from raw in about 50-60 minutes. I opt for that instead of the Dutch oven cuz when im on the road, I’m working, so time for meals is precious. Again, great video.
Thank you! And I've heard of a lot of folks using the pressure cookers. Seems like a great multifunctional piece of kit. Might have to try one out in the future. I appreciate the comment!
@@123marlo Yeah I’ll check it on a flight over. Haha jk but thanks man! I do have some plans/cut sheet available on Amazon if you want to build one. The link is in the description. Cheers and I appreciate the comment!
Suggestion: Make the front cover out of cutting board wood and do a bit thicker so then there is a cutting board right there.
I'm a trucker and have been thinking of starting a channel about cooking good healthy food on the road. My first thought went to cowboys and how they cooked on the trail. This might be exactly what I need to make. Brilliant idea

we need a modern day popular mechanix …
Popular mechanics had lots of good projects.
I can’t believe I’m saying this but…. I love your box
Haha it’s a good box
Yes you can fit “a lot” in that box lol…

Thank you! I know - it's a game changer for sure. Appreciate the comment 🤙
Great everything ready to go it would’ve been nice to of seen it painted Coleman green😅
Thanks! Sounds like you have some Coleman green paint to pick up for a new project. I'm sure it would look stellar. Cheers
Always wanted to make one but was reluctant until seeing your design. Super simple and functional, thanks for the idea Jon!
Happy to help! Good luck on your build and let me know if you have any questions. I have detailed plans available on Amazon for $2.99 if you’re interested too. Link is in the description. 🤙 I appreciate the comment!
Great chuck box! 1/2 inch is plenty strong for this, so many builds I've seen use 3/4, which is overkill. Thanks for the video.
You bet! Thank you
Nice custom setup idea. Never thought of using Duch oven lid for fry plate! Thanks.
Thank you! The lid is a game changer
Thanks!
Thank you! That means a ton
Built one about 30 years ago and still use it
Right on dude! 🤙

Ooo I do love a good fajita skillet 🙌 I appreciate the recco. I’ll check that out.
And I couldn’t agree more. Thanks for the comment!
I´m not drooling over this, you`re drooling over this!
Haha thanks man!
Agreed? not so good
I’ll give a thumbs up, but there’s a lot of room for improvement.
Nice. I'd suggest a reusable coffee filter (my favorite method). Also, onion powder and garlic powder.
Thanks. Appreciate the suggestions. Cheers!
Make a video about what and how you cook using the Lodge pot and lid. You could do a whole series of your most frequently made recipes. Love the video, short and to the point.
100% dude! It’s on the to list. Probably sharing one within the next few weeks 🤙
Nice Box! I'm working on mine now and came across your video. Can't wait to use mine, these are such a great simple idea!
Thanks! Yeah, they’re a game changer
This is a really great idea. I have been wanting to rebuild my camp kitchen and I may need to borrow this idea as inspiration.
You should! And thank you
Great video! Man, I got so tired of digging through the disorganized bin too. Haha Im glad you found it helpful! Good luck on your build 🤙
Nice video. Used one in Boy Scouts back in the day. But it was always too big and took 2 people to carry it around. I like your take on scaling it down to be more manageable. If you are in the Georgia area and need a work shop for a project hit me up. Keep on trucking!
Wow, thank you dude! I’ll keep that in mind. I would love to get back to the southeast in years to come 👍
Cool chuck box! Love the little Dutch oven. We have a larger one because our kids used to camp with us and bring their friends, but now that we are empty nesters, we really need to downsize! We actually live about 35 minutes from the Lodge factory and their factory outlet store.

@@HeyJonMoore We shop there a pretty good bit. Every time that someone gets married, they get an enamel Dutch oven. 👍🏼😎

Neat build. As you well know a good chuck box is an invaluable piece of camp gear. 👍
Thank you! I really do love this thing

Thanks brotha! 🤙
Awesome chuck box. I need one, too. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
Of course! Thank you
My grandpa made a box like this back in the 1950s, my dad still has it.
Sounds like an awesome family heirloom
Please do a video on the use of that cast iron!! Please!
A cooking video would be great. Great efficiency in your chuckbox
For sure! It's on the to-do list. Thanks man

What a rad box my dude!
Thanks brotha
I was thinking about making my own, lo and behold this video pops up. Awesome chuck box! Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks man! Glad it could offer some inspo. Good luck on the build. Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions
The chuck box idea was very popular in the 50's - 70's! But due to their size and weight, the popularity started to go down. The idea is still good, and lighter materials are now available. Maybe its coming back "in vogue", as the kids say!?
I would definetly love to watch a video about your cast iron and what to coock there

I built a generic one from Filson's website. It was clunky. Built an even bigger one for my bro-in-law who has a family, then built a stripped down one from my imagination and it's almost exactly yours
Right on man! Thats awesome
Cool stuff! I'm gonna have to make one of these
Thanks!
Very well made, excellent organization.
Thank you!
Do you have a video and details on your previous version?
I want to check out both.
I love that this one is lean and mean!
I don’t actually. It was gifted to a friend, but if you look up REI Chuckbox you can find plans for it 👍
Well done, all your sht. in one sock. Fit looks great.
Thanks man!
New sub! This will be so helpful during quail season. Thanks man!!

Cool Chuck box.
Thank you!
Very cool! Might make one for myself!
Thanks!
Great video, dude!
Thank you!
Excellent build man! Love it!
Thank you!
What made you live on the road full time jon ? the chuck box perfect
Thank you! Ya know I think it boils down to a desire for freedom and the opportunity to travel/spend time outdoors. Great question though and I appreciate you asking. Happy holidays!
Love the checkbox. Great video. But you went right to left and left or right. you can’t fool me.😅
haha you caught me.. botched that part. Thank you though! :)
Do you have a video about the first chuck box?
Unfortunately not. There may be a few photos of it on my instagram but I wasn’t making videos back when I built it
Great video
Thank you!
This Box is crazy
Great video, thank you😊
Thanks for watching!
How many times have you used both burners. Just asking since I have both a single and dual burner and remodeling mine.
Great question. Very very rarely. I think a single burner would be plenty
i wanna see the first rendition more
I think there’s some photos of it on my instagram. But you can also look up REI Chuck Box and find the plans I used for that one
Love it. Probably going to make one like this for my own truck camper buildout. #gluedandscrewed
Thanks! Yeah I’m really happy with it. It’s been a great tool for cooking on the road. Appreciate the comment 🤙
