⚠⚠⚠⚠IMPORTANT UPDATE ⚠⚠⚠⚠ A number of you have commented saying that the results I recieved from the Tamron lens (particularly when shooting objects at a distance) didn't allign with the quality created by their own copies of this lens. Thank you again to everyone who tested this and gave feedback! I have since returned the lens to Tamron Europe and they have today confirmed that the lens sample that they supplied to me for this test was indeed faultly. Below is an official statement. _"Dear Mr. Calton, Thank you very much for your comparison test between our TAMRON 35-150mm and the Samyang 35-150mm. We really appreciate your reviews and the effort you put into them. Following the results in your video, we have checked our test sample again in detail and unfortunately have to inform you that the lens you used for the test has been damaged by an external force. Every lens we send out to magazines, test labs, bloggers or TH-camrs is thoroughly checked by us before we send it out. To us, it looks like the lens has been damaged in transit. A hard drop or bump, even if the lens is well packed, can deform the rear barrel, causing the bayonet and therefore the entire optical system to sit crooked on the camera. This results in blurred edges and less than optimal center sharpness. We apologize for the inconvenience and the many questions you have received about the image quality of the TAMRON lens. We hope that this statement will clear up some of the uncertainties. Sven Diegel Marketing Manag_ er TAMRON Europe"_ With this in mind, I have redacted this particular section from the video as clearly it's not an accurate representaion of this lens design. Tamron have also kindly agreed to send me a new loan copy of the lens for further testing and I will be using this to create a short update video in due course. I already pre ordered the Samyang lens. They had a10% discount going so it was $1259. A bit concerning that it's that easy to damage the lens in shipping. I guess when you get a lens, you should test it and return it you get a bad copy.
Just watched a review of the Samyang by DAVISION. The takeaway: Tamron has better AF, better flare and ghosting resistance/ better coatings, very slightly bigger bokeh, better sharpness across the whole range, parfocal. Samyang has better CA resistance, bokeh is rounder, no distortion. Both have same vignette.
How on earth did you fit all this information in a 9 minute video? Far out, really incredible job. This is a true benchmark of how these videos should be done.
I have the Tamron with the last 6 months and it's DEADLY. I have no complaints on Sharpness. I shoot music gigs/concerts and wide open its bloody unreal. I love the focal range of 35mm as I can shoot full stage and then zoom to get headshots. For selected events, I now shoot with this lens and my 100-400 on a second body
Nice setup! It's a solid lens! I loved it when I first tested it a few years ago. Having more lenses like it on the market is only a good thing for us Sony shooters 😊 Thanks for the comment.
@@schm147 Hi, my lens is sharp in the corners at f2.8 but that's only my opinion and my lens. As part of my work covering music events I use the lens for indoor venues, I shoot wide open and the results are deadly. Now I use focus tracking and my subject is in the center of the frame. If there's a little fall-off near the edge it doesn't matter to me. Fall off in real-world shooting is subjective and it depends on the photographer and what he/she is trying to achieve. Plus to me, if you are trying to get corner-to-corner sharpness...stop the bloody thing down to f4 or lower. Again with a focal range from 35 to 150 and a max aperture of f2 to f2.8, it's deadly. Plus with the option of crop mode on the body you can go from 150 to 220 it's just a DEADLY lens. I have been shooting for over 25 years and moved from Canon in 2017 and this is one of the best lenses I've ever used. Hope this helps!
I think his Tamron is decentered. Mine is fine. But that's also a sign of lacking quality control of Tamron. It's not like it is the most expensive Tamron lens ever ;)

Thank you Tom as always for your well done and really professional reviews, but at the same time easy to follow on screen. Only thing I can tell you is that I have for almost 1 year now the good Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 Sony FE, and I have never experienced that incredible drop in sharpness at the edges at all the longer focal lengths even at aperture 2.8: I even re-did a test now with a distant subject like a big tree, but nothing to report, perfect sharpness. At this point I think that problem you encountered is due to a defect in your unit, I can't think otherwise!
Hey Jacopo, thanks for the comment. It's plausable that I had a faulty copy, though ultimately, I can only test what I'm given, so without getting access to multiple copies of each lens (which isn't posible unfortunately) I have to base my judgement on the lens I'm given. That said, even if we discount that part of the test, IMO, the Samyang is still the slightly better option, mainly due to the price difference. Though, just to be clear, I think they're both fantastic lenses! Thanks again for watching and for your feedback!
Lol, I paused the video at this point to test my copy out and was glad to find my copy doesn't have the sharpness fall off either. I'd have returned this lens if it was as bad as shown in the video.

@@boristahmasian9604 I've paired the Tamron 35-150 with the sigma 14-24 and have had an absolute blast with the combo. The Tamron lives on by camera body since it has such a versatile focal length. It's been incredibly capable during events, weddings, and portraiture. My only wish (the same one I had for this samyang) was that it was constant 2.8 to reduce the size and weight.
Great comparison review! I own the Tamron. They truly should get major points for setting a new standard! Nothing like it before! Plus they got it to market two years sooner. I hope their next disruption is something like a 18mm - 85mm f/1.8-f/2.0
I’ve had the Tamron for 3 months and I love it. It took awhile to find one and it was worth every penny. I am just a hobbyist but I have not experienced any of the issues you mentioned. Plus all of the reviews of the Tamron 35-150 did not experience any of the things experienced here. DPReview, Dustin Abbott, Gerald Undone and such. Either way, it’s great to see more competition to push for more unique focal lengths and great pricing. I partner this with an FE 20mm 1.8 and it is all that I need.
I have a few Samyang primes that I am very happy with. But I've had the Tamron 35-150 for nearly a year and a half and it rarely is off of my A1. Love that lens. It is a pleasant surprise to see how good the new Samyang version is, I bet Tamron has to drop their price a few hundred bucks. Win for us regardless. But I love my Tamron.
Thanks for the review. What an amazing option for E-mount. In my opinion these great third party options are the biggest difference between the other mounts and what gives Sony a the edge for many shooters where price is a factor to taken into account.
Thanks for watching and commenting! I agree - having so much variety gives Sony a big advantage. It'll be interesting to see where the dust settles once Canon and the other brands finally catch up. I know Nikon and Fuji are already opening up their mounts to third parties...
So far I've been able to adapt all my e-mount lenses on Z6ii. Sure, native lenses work better, but shooting Nikon is so much better than shooting Sony.
Excellent review, you've made my decision much easier. I was waiting for a credible review when I heard Samyang is coming out with 135mm. This is the main reason why i came to Sony - lens option. Lenses, lenses, lenses! The competition is great for consumers. I definitely see that lens on my A1 and A7RV.

Many thanks! I think I'll be picking one up. Something to note which could give it another half point for video users, is the focus ring is of the same design as the Sanyang V-AF cine lenses which means they are geared for focus wheels straight out of the box. Nice!

I often think could I pair this type of lens with my 16-35GM in stead of my 16-35gm, 24-70f 2.8 GM MKii and 70-200 f2.8 MKii so going from 3 to 2 zooms?? My favourite lens by far is the Sigma 85 f1.4 Art
Whew, I quickly grabbed my Tamron 35-150 to check that softness at the edges cause your sample image looks smush. Tried the same settings and shot towards trees. It is softer than the middle but not as bad as your sample. Did you try to capture more shots of same length at different subjects? Awesome vid review btw.cheers

Just a quick question: on the minute 3:19 and 3:40 for the Photo & Video AF comparison, I have noticed that the whyte car on the left hand corner appears blurrier on the wide end of the lens with the tamron than on the Samyang. Did both lens had the same aperture during your tests? Thanks in advance your answer. I have the Tamron trinity lenses and thanks to your tutorials I have always chosen wisely my gear. I do a lot of photography at Disneyland and I think this would be such a great walk around the park lens. 35mm is so perfect for close up character shots, but being able to go all the way to 150mm would be nice for many things, especially to get some of that compression. I've had my eye on the Tamron since it came out, but for a lens I would only be using mostly for fun I haven't pulled the trigger. I may grab the Samyang tho after your review.
I rented this lens for my Disneyworld trip last year. I wanted something wide and slightly tele. I loved it. However, it’s pretty heavy!! And bigger than you think. So walking around all day with it is exhausting. SoCal weather might make it easier to walk around in though.
In comparisons, some reviewers run through everything about each lens, then onto the next lens While your way - running through each of the qualities of both lenses one by one, eg manual focusing A vs B, etc is much more useful Kudos 👍
Interesting and the Samyang seems great an almost copy design wise. I have just looked at images from my Tamron at 150mm/f2.8 at middle to long distance and am not seeing anything like the same corner softness that you are so wonder about copy variation. It really is the ultimate event lens
A few people have said the same in the comments so it's likely the results are due to a fault in the test sample. Though, without testing multiple samples at the same time (which isn't possible), I can only test what I'm given and I'd prefer to be open and honest with the info I gather.
@@TomCalton well I have just done more testing on my Tamron on distant foliage 150mm at f2.8 and the edges and corners are really very good so I do sort of think you should look again at your copy of the lens and maybe edit the review as I think that something is not right. The Samyang does look to be very good but I think this is being unfair to the Tamron
Hi Tom, is 35- 150 parfocul lense. I have 24-70 samyang, when I zoom in and out for video I loose the focus. Does the 35-150 do the same or locks in the subject please help to know.
After watching this, I'm seriously wondering if Samyang has actually been building this lens for Tamron and Tamron had an exclusivity agreenment where Samyang wouldn't brand it their own for X years or something. Regardless, if they can come in a bunch cheaper at the same quality as the Tamron, I'll be getting one. I've wanted the Tamron for a long while but $2500 CAD + 15% tax just is too much. Fingers crossed the Samyang will be significantly cheaper. This, alongside the Tamron 20-40 would be the perfect combo, IMO.
Good point. I thought it may have been the other way around. The designs are almost identical. If Tamron does not sue Samyang, we know who did it first!!!!
I’d say it’s more of a Sony relationship with tamron since Sony owns a bunch of tamron stock. I don’t see your logic on why or how tamron would be selling a rebranded samyang lens. There’s zero reason for a lens manufacturer to do this since they already manufacture lenses. Why would they have another manufacturer make a lens for them. Samyang took the focal length and made a slightly different lens. It’s not some kind of conspiracy lol.
@@boristahmasian9604you can’t sue another manufacturer for using the same focal length and speed. It’s clearly a rip off of tamrons lens but it’s not an exact copy. There’s zero basis to sue. By that logic each manufacturer would have a patent on a focal length. Tamron made it first and samyang followed suit. I’m sure others will follow.
@@mrwashur1991 I am not a lawyer and can't tell you if they can or cannot sue. I just stated a possibility. Why would lens manufacturers file patents if someone else can copy exactly (down to the look) of what they have a patent for. Actually, it looks like the Samyang is the better lens optically. So they did something that made it better. Tamron may not bother but Sony might since they are part owner of Tamron.
@@mrwashur1991 I read somewhere they own 15% of Tamron. There are plenty of examples of third party lens manufacturers designing for major brands and even for each other. So who knows. Tamron/Sonyy have plenty of lawyers on standby if this is an infringement. They can only determine. For me as an end user, the Samyang is good news as it gives me a cheaper alternative without compromising on quality. This coming from someone who owns only Tamron lenses for my Sony system! I might wait for the constant f2.8, lighter and possibly cheaper Tamron coming down the pike.

Tom, another great video review, but I think your Tamron is a dud. My Tamron 35-150 is tack sharp across the frame at all focal lengths including 110mm. I just went through my LR catalog with over 1,000 images from this lens and checked. It would be great if you could get your hands on another copy of the Tamron and retest it.
It's lenses like this that make it very tempting to go full-frame. A lot of the photos & videos I take are in low-light situations, gigs & music stuff etc, which really pushes my Micro Four Thirds kit to the limits. Photography is my favourite genre of photography too, where the extra bokeh would certainly be appreciated! Hopefully one day I can financially justify going for an A7IV. Both versions of the 35-150mm seem very capable. I wonder how likely it is actually the same optical design underneath? Maybe it was a collaboration between Tamron & Samyang, with an agreement such as Tamron gets exclusivity selling for a certain period, then Samyang can offer a lower price point variant with a more limited warranty and without the USB-C port. Makes sense when you consider how similar the physical characteristics of the lenses are (buttons with exactly the same options in the same places etc...). The difference in colour tint could perhaps be different glass from different suppliers, but the actual optical layout could be the same. It is such a unique focal range/aperture combination that it seems to much of a coincidence that Samyang could release it within a reasonable time after Tamron, when developing lenses from scratch can take many years.
Thanks for your comparison! I had the Tamron in my hand and made some test photos, but I don't know how it fits in my range of Lenses. But seeing the Samyang a lot cheaper and having the same quality, it makes me think about again.
@@VVondervvall not true, reviewed Tamron has no fault. All reliable test pictures show Tamron being soft at the edges at 150mm, just look at Gordon Laing's pictures for example.
There is one thing I rarely seem mentioned: how big friction on the zoom ring is. I had 70-180mm for quite a long time and I love working with it, so I have decided to pick up 35-150mm to broaden the range and... was shocked with how difficult to change the focal distance the new lens is in comparison to the older. I even brought it to the service only to get a statement that this is "normal operation", sigh. How does Samyang compare to Tamron in this regard - is it any better? There should be also a function to modify tension on zoom ring just the same as on focus ring! A point to be raised with both lens companies now.
I have a question here I purchased the lens 3 days ago.. My comment from the shooting is .. AF is loosing the eye and keep hunting .. I think it is not good for AF like GM glass .. may be i am wrong .. I haven’t tested the tamron version.. but i am not happy at gym shoot where if the dumbbell block the eye for 0.5 second .. it will lock on the elbow and stick to it and no more eye auto focus

How did you find the weight? If the specs are correct, it's about the same weight as my canon 70-200 and that thing's a pain to carry around all day. This lens is super attractive otherwise.
Thank you for the review. I wish the comparison also includes the warranty information though. Tamron in Canada with local service provider comes with full 10 year warranty while Samyang on their website states it depend on the region and I believe only with 1 year warranty shipped back to US. Samyang is a bit sharper; however, the unactual blue cast would be too much for me for the image workflow. Regardless of which lens when they are paired with a 61MP A7R IV or A7R V sensor with ability to produce 26MP image in APS-C mode they become an extreme versatile 35-225mm f/2.0-f/2.8 All-In-One 6.4x super zoom low light lens that can replace quit a few prime lenses without swapping and the need to cleaning the sensor as often: 35-38mm (APS-C 52.5-57mm) or 35-57mm = f/2 39-58mm (APS-C 58.8-87mm) or 39-87mm = f/2.2 59-79mm (APS-C 88.5-118.5mm) or 59-118.,5mm = f/2.5 80-150mm (APS-C 120-225mm) or 80-225mm = f/2.8 Not much not to like about the potential of the range of these two lenses. Adding a Sigma APS-C 18-35mm f/1.8 shooting at 26MP APS-C mode it would be equivalent of 27-52mm f/1.8... two lenses to easily replace the trinity set with better low light capability... 🤔🤔🤔
Personally I would prefer a 24-150 f2.8, or 28-150 f2.8 for compromise of size and weight. 35 will mean I need to brought a ultra wide with me most of the time...
Hopefully lens manufacturers like Tamron keep being innovative, like they were with the 35-150mm, and we'll see some cool new focal lengths in the future!
This! I have no need for the partly f2 on a zoom lens with this range. If I want more dof I'd grab a f1.4 prime anyway. Don't get why Samyang now does exactly the same. #wtf 🤷🏻♂

Some old reviews of the Tamron suggested that the lens is "almost" parfocal, so it can retain the focus while zooming in video at manual focus pretty well, does the Samyang hold up to that?
The build quality of these fast,complex lenses have to be very tight to keep it all in perfect line and samyang has managed their quality control which was a weakness with some of their manual focus models in the past. Their 135mm models were/are their very best and equalling their competitors too.
9:37 Another possibility is Tamron might respond with litigation. The Samyang's form and function and even the optical arrangement are very similar to the Tamron. Still, I'd like to get one.
owner of the Samyang. used for gigs at concerts. quite big stages. the huge range helped a lot, and the quality of the images is outstanding. I started thinking it's a heavy lens, wich will get your hands tired, but then I just adjusted my grip accordingly. now I don't care. great workhorse, combined with a 17-28 it covers pretty much anything. Unless you love primes, but that's anothe problem :)

Thank you for your useful and informational review. Does this Samyang lens make you one-handed? I tried and returned the Tamron a year ago, because the lens was too heavy to hang off the body of my Sony A1, and the lens did not provide either a tripod collar or even a 1/4-inch 16 socket into which I could screw in a Black Rapids or similar strap, and carry the lens by the strap and let the camera body hang off the lens. That forced me to always carry my camera + lens by the lens with one hand, or always carry a camera bag. Also, the Tamron could not be used with a monopod. Is the Samyang any better for luggability?!
Great video, mate. I just bought the Tammy and am very impressed so far. A bit heavy maybe. I directly checked for corner softness wide open and couldn’t replicate it. Must be your copy. If the Sammy doesn’t has the same copy variation lottery, I’ll may return the Tammy in favor of the Sammy
Haven't found such issues with my Tamron unit. Mine is perfectly centered. I think he sadly have had a bad copy. But this is also bad for Tamron because for such a price tag the lens definitely must be centered perfectly and quality control should be working well here
You didn't mention the Tamron Utility App which enables functions like A-B Focus, Focus Preset, Focus Limiter, Focus Ring Function Setting among others. That being said, Samyang's price is extremely tempting. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent review. However my advice for everyone now jumping on the Samyang: consider awaiting more reviews as the Tamron here is obviously a dud (but good sample history otherwise) while for the Samyang there is no sample history and not even representative for a production sample (pre-production sample). Like others in the comments, my Tamron sample is impressively sharp basically everywhere at all focal lengths wide open - 24mp sensor camera (only) and 5000 shots approx. (BTW I got my Tamron ~450€ cheaper then current list on BF so no price envy as such...)
I was really shocked when I saw the quality of the tamron. Although owning it for nearly 1 year, I am very satisfied with the quality as well as the sharpness. Maybe this replica is doing a good job of telling us to change to a new lens. However if you make a lens with equal quality and as good as why cost more than 1/3 that's the stupidity of the sales strategy or something weird.
It appeared that the sammy is actually slightly wider through out. The focus tests, there was more building in the frame in the sammy and the light pole in the distance stayed identifiable in the bokeh longer - something I would expect from a wider lens
great review....i think Tamron has no choice but to drop price. nice to have the Tamron usb connection but once set up, that's pretty redundant.....interesting why Tamron was so soft at edges when rest of optics so similar.
7:10 I think there is something wrong. I have the tamron and I can sure it isn't so bad. And this doesn't match with other picture in the same video, I thin simply was out of focus
Thanks for the comment Gaetano. If it was out of focus, the entire image would be blurred, not just the corners. The centre is just as sharp as the Samyang image. I took multiple shots with each lens to make sure it wasn't just a one off and all of them came back the same. Have you personally tested your lens whilst shooting something that's at a far distance, wide open and at the long end to make sure? If not, it might be worth trying. It was only in this specific circumstance that it was an issue - as you can see from the lens chart results in the video, corner sharpness at a close distance is pretty good. Sample variation is very much a thing, so it could have been a dodgey copy, but I can only review what has been sent to me.
As a Sony shooter what a time to be alive. There are lenses for nearly any range and from every manufacturer. Not long ago people were complaining that this was the Sony Achilles heel. What a difference a few years make
I wonder if this lens is problematic with AF in video as Samyang 135mm F1.8 I have. When there are bright patches of light in the background the lens hunts back and forth with the focus (like GH4 AF :D).
I have tried two different copies of this lens and neither of them fit on the Samyang Lens station. With the first lens it actually broke the pins on the lens station. Therefore I was unable to update the firmware or change the lens settings. It's possible I just had bad luck (twice), but I have decided to go for the Tamron lens instead. I also hope the build quality of the Tamron will to be significantly better.
Haven't had to ever take them up on it, but Tamron seems to have the best warranty in the industry. Glad to see Samyang entering this space they are the team to beat for price to specs and general IQ - though they never win the IQ tests - so this is certainly interesting this could be a first here on this one.
No bs* just 100% info... You should have at least 150k subscribers! It would be well deserved! Thank you Tom! Although it seems like the Samyang is a clear winner, Tamron with their 6yrs warranty and their constant quality control is just better overall.
I own the Sony A7III and A7IV. Had FAR too many sudden lock-ups on either camera with any Rokinon/Samyang lens. Totally unreliable for me. Sold them! Deadly looking at the Tamron 35-150. Price? $1,899.00! ONLY thing holding me back from pushing the "Submit Order" button. Tamron has, from an authorized seller (have found their 35-150 sold from East Coast seller-not authorized dealer at $1,599). But, we don't get the (6) year Tamron warranty. Now, my question would be, what type of warranty replacement and speed of turnaround would be? I had to send in my 70-200 2.8 Tamron in for repair and almost NO issues with it through Tamron...same for a 35mm of theirs I had to send in on one occasion. I LOVE the price of the Samyang/Ronkinon...just need to be sure it performs and will last and not lock-up on me.
Get the Tamron. However I've had some weird AF lockups aswell with my A7III, but with Sigma 85 and the Tamron 35-150. Might be the body? Usually a quick OFF/ON fixes that.
I've been waiting for Tamron to launch the Z mount version of this lens.. but I think Samyang will be ahead of the game... First one to launch the Z mount version gets my money.
I still dont understand the "complaint" and emphasis all reviewers tend to put on the variable aperture and the "only f2.0 at 35-45 mm" You are replacing f2.8 lenses with this (usually a 24-70). You never get f2.0-2.5 at 35-79 mm with those öenses. So instead say you have the benefit of being brighter than a standard 24-70 f2.8 at 35-79 mm. That is a good thing. Not a bad thing. Not a bash at you. Just something I noticed most reviewers comment on
I had the Tamron 70-180 f2.8 for sports photo in low light but focus was not fast enough to follow players and it was noisy… so I got the Sony 70-200 and no complains other than size (bulky) and prize. Have been longing for the Tamron 35-150 but the prize was bothering. Will get the Samyang for sure… tanks for the video.
The focus of the Tamron 70-180mm itself was the fastest I've ever seen. However it have had a lot of issues with the communication to the camera. Eye-AF was very bad with full body shots and was mostly over 0.5m off the focus frame and the communication seem to have been often very slow for fast moving objects. Too bad as it was an almost perfect lens, if it wouldn't have been these issues. I've bought the 35-150mm only because the 70-180mm have had such an inaccurate AF
I still like the warmer tint of the Tamron lenses. I own 2 Tamron and a Samyang Prime and the cold color on the Samyang is still not so pleasing when you looking into the camera finder...
I just sen back my 24-70 Rokinon for bad quality in the mount (it seams a common problem). It broken in my firs attempt to change it. Hope the fix this for this model…
Samyang seems to be a no brainer, the only cons is for the looks, the rings look like they've been borrowed from 2 different lenses and fitted here. And I also feel the font used for markings looks odd.
Seems to be MUCH BETTER than their very first AF lens which was the (Samyang 24-70mm F2.8) that came out of nowhere a year ago which I did not even heard of, and surprisingly is 200g more than the Sigma Art and barely any cheaper than when the Sigma is on sale, which is almost all the time.
Nice review. I'm a hobbyist photographer with sigma 35 f2, 65 f2, samyang 135 mm 1.8, tamron 28-200. If it were you, would you sell the primes to buy this lens? Considering the overlap of zoom range of the tamron which anyway I use for travel photography
Hey, thanks! If it were me, no I wouldn't. Mainly because I prefer to shoot lightweight. But that's just me - if swaping out lenses is a pain for you and you don't mind carrying the extra weight around all the time, then this would be a great alternative.

i am wondering why all the reviewers on youtube say the Samyang say it is a good as the Tamron for less yet the reviews on b&h and adorama and just about every other store say the samyang has focus issues and customization issues I just ordered another tamron 35-150 should be here the 2nd of January 2024 and it comes with a six year warranty providing you don't drop it but that is what OS (oh shit) insurance is for i think samyang is double checking versions of lens sent for review

Could your Tamron 35-150 a decentred copy? It seems a lot worse than from my impression, especially each tree branch was ghosting into parallel lines. DPreview sample photos of Tamron are also not that bad.

A number of you have commented saying that the results I recieved from the Tamron lens (particularly when shooting objects at a distance) didn't allign with the quality created by their own copies of this lens. Thank you again to everyone who tested this and gave feedback! I have since returned the lens to Tamron Europe and they have today confirmed that the lens sample that they supplied to me for this test was indeed faultly. Below is an official statement.

Following the results in your video, we have checked our test sample again in detail and unfortunately have to inform you that the lens you used for the test has been damaged by an external force. Every lens we send out to magazines, test labs, bloggers or TH-camrs is thoroughly checked by us before we send it out. To us, it looks like the lens has been damaged in transit. A hard drop or bump, even if the lens is well packed, can deform the rear barrel, causing the bayonet and therefore the entire optical system to sit crooked on the camera. This results in blurred edges and less than optimal center sharpness. We apologize for the inconvenience and the many questions you have received about the image quality of the TAMRON lens. We hope that this statement will clear up some of the uncertainties.

With this in mind, I have redacted this particular section from the video as clearly it's not an accurate representaion of this lens design. Tamron have also kindly agreed to send me a new loan copy of the lens for further testing and I will be using this to create a short update video in due course.

I already pre ordered the Samyang lens. They had a10% discount going so it was $1259.
A bit concerning that it's that easy to damage the lens in shipping. I guess when you get a lens, you should test it and return it you get a bad copy.

Just watched a review of the Samyang by DAVISION. The takeaway:
Tamron has better AF, better flare and ghosting resistance/ better coatings, very slightly bigger bokeh, better sharpness across the whole range, parfocal.
Samyang has better CA resistance, bokeh is rounder, no distortion.
Both have same vignette.
How on earth did you fit all this information in a 9 minute video? Far out, really incredible job. This is a true benchmark of how these videos should be done.

Wow! Samyang is improving more and more. I picked up the 135 1.8 lens and tempted to pick this up.
I have the Tamron with the last 6 months and it's DEADLY. I have no complaints on Sharpness. I shoot music gigs/concerts and wide open its bloody unreal. I love the focal range of 35mm as I can shoot full stage and then zoom to get headshots. For selected events, I now shoot with this lens and my 100-400 on a second body

How is it on the corners when wide open at 150mm? His test said it's very soft
@@schm147 Hi, my lens is sharp in the corners at f2.8 but that's only my opinion and my lens. As part of my work covering music events I use the lens for indoor venues, I shoot wide open and the results are deadly. Now I use focus tracking and my subject is in the center of the frame. If there's a little fall-off near the edge it doesn't matter to me.
Fall off in real-world shooting is subjective and it depends on the photographer and what he/she is trying to achieve. Plus to me, if you are trying to get corner-to-corner sharpness...stop the bloody thing down to f4 or lower.
Again with a focal range from 35 to 150 and a max aperture of f2 to f2.8, it's deadly. Plus with the option of crop mode on the body you can go from 150 to 220 it's just a DEADLY lens.
I have been shooting for over 25 years and moved from Canon in 2017 and this is one of the best lenses I've ever used.

I think his Tamron is decentered. Mine is fine. But that's also a sign of lacking quality control of Tamron. It's not like it is the most expensive Tamron lens ever ;)

Only thing I can tell you is that I have for almost 1 year now the good Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 Sony FE, and I have never experienced that incredible drop in sharpness at the edges at all the longer focal lengths even at aperture 2.8: I even re-did a test now with a distant subject like a big tree, but nothing to report, perfect sharpness.
At this point I think that problem you encountered is due to a defect in your unit, I can't think otherwise!

It's plausable that I had a faulty copy, though ultimately, I can only test what I'm given, so without getting access to multiple copies of each lens (which isn't posible unfortunately) I have to base my judgement on the lens I'm given.
That said, even if we discount that part of the test, IMO, the Samyang is still the slightly better option, mainly due to the price difference. Though, just to be clear, I think they're both fantastic lenses!

Lol, I paused the video at this point to test my copy out and was glad to find my copy doesn't have the sharpness fall off either. I'd have returned this lens if it was as bad as shown in the video.

@@boristahmasian9604 I've paired the Tamron 35-150 with the sigma 14-24 and have had an absolute blast with the combo. The Tamron lives on by camera body since it has such a versatile focal length. It's been incredibly capable during events, weddings, and portraiture. My only wish (the same one I had for this samyang) was that it was constant 2.8 to reduce the size and weight.
Great comparison review! I own the Tamron. They truly should get major points for setting a new standard! Nothing like it before! Plus they got it to market two years sooner. I hope their next disruption is something like a 18mm - 85mm f/1.8-f/2.0
I’ve had the Tamron for 3 months and I love it. It took awhile to find one and it was worth every penny. I am just a hobbyist but I have not experienced any of the issues you mentioned. Plus all of the reviews of the Tamron 35-150 did not experience any of the things experienced here. DPReview, Dustin Abbott, Gerald Undone and such.
Either way, it’s great to see more competition to push for more unique focal lengths and great pricing. I partner this with an FE 20mm 1.8 and it is all that I need.
Just look at Gordon Laing test pictures, it's clear Tamron edges are soft at 150mm.

I have a few Samyang primes that I am very happy with. But I've had the Tamron 35-150 for nearly a year and a half and it rarely is off of my A1. Love that lens. It is a pleasant surprise to see how good the new Samyang version is, I bet Tamron has to drop their price a few hundred bucks. Win for us regardless. But I love my Tamron.

Thanks for the review. What an amazing option for E-mount. In my opinion these great third party options are the biggest difference between the other mounts and what gives Sony a the edge for many shooters where price is a factor to taken into account.

So far I've been able to adapt all my e-mount lenses on Z6ii. Sure, native lenses work better, but shooting Nikon is so much better than shooting Sony.
Is the Samyang actually parfocal? I know the Tamron advertises it, but it isn't.
nope. Both depend on software. Tamron almost mimics parfocal behavior, Samyang is a dumpsterfire.
Excellent review, you've made my decision much easier. I was waiting for a credible review when I heard Samyang is coming out with 135mm. This is the main reason why i came to Sony - lens option. Lenses, lenses, lenses! The competition is great for consumers. I definitely see that lens on my A1 and A7RV.

Whew, I quickly grabbed my Tamron 35-150 to check that softness at the edges cause your sample image looks smush. Tried the same settings and shot towards trees. It is softer than the middle but not as bad as your sample. Did you try to capture more shots of same length at different subjects? Awesome vid review btw.cheers

Just a quick question: on the minute 3:19 and 3:40 for the Photo & Video AF comparison, I have noticed that the whyte car on the left hand corner appears blurrier on the wide end of the lens with the tamron than on the Samyang. Did both lens had the same aperture during your tests?

I do a lot of photography at Disneyland and I think this would be such a great walk around the park lens. 35mm is so perfect for close up character shots, but being able to go all the way to 150mm would be nice for many things, especially to get some of that compression. I've had my eye on the Tamron since it came out, but for a lens I would only be using mostly for fun I haven't pulled the trigger. I may grab the Samyang tho after your review.
I rented this lens for my Disneyworld trip last year. I wanted something wide and slightly tele. I loved it. However, it’s pretty heavy!! And bigger than you think. So walking around all day with it is exhausting. SoCal weather might make it easier to walk around in though.

Interesting and the Samyang seems great an almost copy design wise. I have just looked at images from my Tamron at 150mm/f2.8 at middle to long distance and am not seeing anything like the same corner softness that you are so wonder about copy variation. It really is the ultimate event lens
A few people have said the same in the comments so it's likely the results are due to a fault in the test sample. Though, without testing multiple samples at the same time (which isn't possible), I can only test what I'm given and I'd prefer to be open and honest with the info I gather.
@@TomCalton well I have just done more testing on my Tamron on distant foliage 150mm at f2.8 and the edges and corners are really very good so I do sort of think you should look again at your copy of the lens and maybe edit the review as I think that something is not right. The Samyang does look to be very good but I think this is being unfair to the Tamron

After watching this, I'm seriously wondering if Samyang has actually been building this lens for Tamron and Tamron had an exclusivity agreenment where Samyang wouldn't brand it their own for X years or something.
Regardless, if they can come in a bunch cheaper at the same quality as the Tamron, I'll be getting one. I've wanted the Tamron for a long while but $2500 CAD + 15% tax just is too much. Fingers crossed the Samyang will be significantly cheaper. This, alongside the Tamron 20-40 would be the perfect combo, IMO.

I’d say it’s more of a Sony relationship with tamron since Sony owns a bunch of tamron stock. I don’t see your logic on why or how tamron would be selling a rebranded samyang lens. There’s zero reason for a lens manufacturer to do this since they already manufacture lenses. Why would they have another manufacturer make a lens for them. Samyang took the focal length and made a slightly different lens. It’s not some kind of conspiracy lol.
@@boristahmasian9604you can’t sue another manufacturer for using the same focal length and speed. It’s clearly a rip off of tamrons lens but it’s not an exact copy. There’s zero basis to sue. By that logic each manufacturer would have a patent on a focal length. Tamron made it first and samyang followed suit. I’m sure others will follow.
@@mrwashur1991 I am not a lawyer and can't tell you if they can or cannot sue. I just stated a possibility. Why would lens manufacturers file patents if someone else can copy exactly (down to the look) of what they have a patent for. Actually, it looks like the Samyang is the better lens optically. So they did something that made it better. Tamron may not bother but Sony might since they are part owner of Tamron.
@@mrwashur1991 I read somewhere they own 15% of Tamron. There are plenty of examples of third party lens manufacturers designing for major brands and even for each other. So who knows. Tamron/Sonyy have plenty of lawyers on standby if this is an infringement. They can only determine.
For me as an end user, the Samyang is good news as it gives me a cheaper alternative without compromising on quality. This coming from someone who owns only Tamron lenses for my Sony system!
I might wait for the constant f2.8, lighter and possibly cheaper Tamron coming down the pike.
hopefully Samyang makes 24-240mm f/2.8, 16-28mm/16-35mm f/2.8 and 16mm f/1.8 lens

Tom, another great video review, but I think your Tamron is a dud. My Tamron 35-150 is tack sharp across the frame at all focal lengths including 110mm. I just went through my LR catalog with over 1,000 images from this lens and checked. It would be great if you could get your hands on another copy of the Tamron and retest it.
Majorly surprised that the image quality turned to mush, as you said, on the tamron and was clear on the samyang. Very intriguing.
It's lenses like this that make it very tempting to go full-frame. A lot of the photos & videos I take are in low-light situations, gigs & music stuff etc, which really pushes my Micro Four Thirds kit to the limits. Photography is my favourite genre of photography too, where the extra bokeh would certainly be appreciated! Hopefully one day I can financially justify going for an A7IV. Both versions of the 35-150mm seem very capable.
I wonder how likely it is actually the same optical design underneath? Maybe it was a collaboration between Tamron & Samyang, with an agreement such as Tamron gets exclusivity selling for a certain period, then Samyang can offer a lower price point variant with a more limited warranty and without the USB-C port. Makes sense when you consider how similar the physical characteristics of the lenses are (buttons with exactly the same options in the same places etc...). The difference in colour tint could perhaps be different glass from different suppliers, but the actual optical layout could be the same. It is such a unique focal range/aperture combination that it seems to much of a coincidence that Samyang could release it within a reasonable time after Tamron, when developing lenses from scratch can take many years.
My tamron copy rivals my Nikon z70-200 2.8s. It’s a very sharp lens that I have come to love .

@@VVondervvall not true, reviewed Tamron has no fault. All reliable test pictures show Tamron being soft at the edges at 150mm, just look at Gordon Laing's pictures for example.
There is one thing I rarely seem mentioned: how big friction on the zoom ring is. I had 70-180mm for quite a long time and I love working with it, so I have decided to pick up 35-150mm to broaden the range and... was shocked with how difficult to change the focal distance the new lens is in comparison to the older. I even brought it to the service only to get a statement that this is "normal operation", sigh.
How does Samyang compare to Tamron in this regard - is it any better? There should be also a function to modify tension on zoom ring just the same as on focus ring! A point to be raised with both lens companies now.

I think it is not good for AF like GM glass .. may be i am wrong .. I haven’t tested the tamron version.. but i am not happy at gym shoot where if the dumbbell block the eye for 0.5 second .. it will lock on the elbow and stick to it and no more eye auto focus

How did you find the weight? If the specs are correct, it's about the same weight as my canon 70-200 and that thing's a pain to carry around all day. This lens is super attractive otherwise.
Thank you for the review. I wish the comparison also includes the warranty information though. Tamron in Canada with local service provider comes with full 10 year warranty while Samyang on their website states it depend on the region and I believe only with 1 year warranty shipped back to US. Samyang is a bit sharper; however, the unactual blue cast would be too much for me for the image workflow. Regardless of which lens when they are paired with a 61MP A7R IV or A7R V sensor with ability to produce 26MP image in APS-C mode they become an extreme versatile 35-225mm f/2.0-f/2.8 All-In-One 6.4x super zoom low light lens that can replace quit a few prime lenses without swapping and the need to cleaning the sensor as often:
35-38mm (APS-C 52.5-57mm) or 35-57mm = f/2
39-58mm (APS-C 58.8-87mm) or 39-87mm = f/2.2
59-79mm (APS-C 88.5-118.5mm) or 59-118.,5mm = f/2.5
80-150mm (APS-C 120-225mm) or 80-225mm = f/2.8
Not much not to like about the potential of the range of these two lenses. Adding a Sigma APS-C 18-35mm f/1.8 shooting at 26MP APS-C mode it would be equivalent of 27-52mm f/1.8... two lenses to easily replace the trinity set with better low light capability... 🤔🤔🤔
Personally I would prefer a 24-150 f2.8, or 28-150 f2.8 for compromise of size and weight. 35 will mean I need to brought a ultra wide with me most of the time...
Hopefully lens manufacturers like Tamron keep being innovative, like they were with the 35-150mm, and we'll see some cool new focal lengths in the future!

This! I have no need for the partly f2 on a zoom lens with this range. If I want more dof I'd grab a f1.4 prime anyway. Don't get why Samyang now does exactly the same. #wtf 🤷🏻♂
Some old reviews of the Tamron suggested that the lens is "almost" parfocal, so it can retain the focus while zooming in video at manual focus pretty well, does the Samyang hold up to that?
That's correct. And yes, the Samyang has a fake kind of parfocal where it'll adjust the focus electronically as you zoom
The build quality of these fast,complex lenses have to be very tight to keep it all in perfect line and samyang has managed their quality control which was a weakness with some of their manual focus models in the past. Their 135mm models were/are their very best and equalling their competitors too.
9:37 Another possibility is Tamron might respond with litigation. The Samyang's form and function and even the optical arrangement are very similar to the Tamron. Still, I'd like to get one.

used for gigs at concerts. quite big stages. the huge range helped a lot, and the quality of the images is outstanding.
I started thinking it's a heavy lens, wich will get your hands tired, but then I just adjusted my grip accordingly.
now I don't care.
great workhorse, combined with a 17-28 it covers pretty much anything.
Unless you love primes, but that's anothe problem :)

Thank you for your useful and informational review. Does this Samyang lens make you one-handed? I tried and returned the Tamron a year ago, because the lens was too heavy to hang off the body of my Sony A1, and the lens did not provide either a tripod collar or even a 1/4-inch 16 socket into which I could screw in a Black Rapids or similar strap, and carry the lens by the strap and let the camera body hang off the lens. That forced me to always carry my camera + lens by the lens with one hand, or always carry a camera bag. Also, the Tamron could not be used with a monopod. Is the Samyang any better for luggability?!

The Tamron looks broken or totally decentered. In the 35mm comparison on the parking space, the focus plane looks like from a tilt shift lens :D
Great video, mate. I just bought the Tammy and am very impressed so far. A bit heavy maybe. I directly checked for corner softness wide open and couldn’t replicate it. Must be your copy. If the Sammy doesn’t has the same copy variation lottery, I’ll may return the Tammy in favor of the Sammy
Haven't found such issues with my Tamron unit. Mine is perfectly centered. I think he sadly have had a bad copy. But this is also bad for Tamron because for such a price tag the lens definitely must be centered perfectly and quality control should be working well here
You didn't mention the Tamron Utility App which enables functions like A-B Focus, Focus Preset, Focus Limiter, Focus Ring Function Setting among others. That being said, Samyang's price is extremely tempting. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent review. However my advice for everyone now jumping on the Samyang: consider awaiting more reviews as the Tamron here is obviously a dud (but good sample history otherwise) while for the Samyang there is no sample history and not even representative for a production sample (pre-production sample).
Like others in the comments, my Tamron sample is impressively sharp basically everywhere at all focal lengths wide open - 24mp sensor camera (only) and 5000 shots approx.
(BTW I got my Tamron ~450€ cheaper then current list on BF so no price envy as such...)
I was really shocked when I saw the quality of the tamron. Although owning it for nearly 1 year, I am very satisfied with the quality as well as the sharpness. Maybe this replica is doing a good job of telling us to change to a new lens. However if you make a lens with equal quality and as good as why cost more than 1/3 that's the stupidity of the sales strategy or something weird.
It appeared that the sammy is actually slightly wider through out. The focus tests, there was more building in the frame in the sammy and the light pole in the distance stayed identifiable in the bokeh longer - something I would expect from a wider lens
great review....i think Tamron has no choice but to drop price. nice to have the Tamron usb connection but once set up, that's pretty redundant.....interesting why Tamron was so soft at edges when rest of optics so similar.

I think there is something wrong. I have the tamron and I can sure it isn't so bad. And this doesn't match with other picture in the same video, I thin simply was out of focus

If it was out of focus, the entire image would be blurred, not just the corners. The centre is just as sharp as the Samyang image. I took multiple shots with each lens to make sure it wasn't just a one off and all of them came back the same.
Have you personally tested your lens whilst shooting something that's at a far distance, wide open and at the long end to make sure? If not, it might be worth trying. It was only in this specific circumstance that it was an issue - as you can see from the lens chart results in the video, corner sharpness at a close distance is pretty good.
Sample variation is very much a thing, so it could have been a dodgey copy, but I can only review what has been sent to me.
As a Sony shooter what a time to be alive. There are lenses for nearly any range and from every manufacturer. Not long ago people were complaining that this was the Sony Achilles heel. What a difference a few years make

I wonder if this lens is problematic with AF in video as Samyang 135mm F1.8 I have.
When there are bright patches of light in the background the lens hunts back and forth with the focus (like GH4 AF :D).

At what focal length do the apertures change compared to the Tamron?
They're both the same. I list the changes during the real life images section. Just turn on captions if you need it written out. Hope this helps

I have tried two different copies of this lens and neither of them fit on the Samyang Lens station. With the first lens it actually broke the pins on the lens station. Therefore I was unable to update the firmware or change the lens settings. It's possible I just had bad luck (twice), but I have decided to go for the Tamron lens instead. I also hope the build quality of the Tamron will to be significantly better.
Please add how many shots was taken and the number of sharp images when your doing your AF test.

Will this Samyang lens not suffer the same fate as their 24-70mm which i saw people having broken lenses on the mounting part.
Haven't had to ever take them up on it, but Tamron seems to have the best warranty in the industry. Glad to see Samyang entering this space they are the team to beat for price to specs and general IQ - though they never win the IQ tests - so this is certainly interesting this could be a first here on this one.

Tamron has better IQ and AF too. Don't just watch 1 review.
I own the Sony A7III and A7IV. Had FAR too many sudden lock-ups on either camera with any Rokinon/Samyang lens. Totally unreliable for me. Sold them! Deadly looking at the Tamron 35-150. Price? $1,899.00! ONLY thing holding me back from pushing the "Submit Order" button. Tamron has, from an authorized seller (have found their 35-150 sold from East Coast seller-not authorized dealer at $1,599). But, we don't get the (6) year Tamron warranty. Now, my question would be, what type of warranty replacement and speed of turnaround would be? I had to send in my 70-200 2.8 Tamron in for repair and almost NO issues with it through Tamron...same for a 35mm of theirs I had to send in on one occasion. I LOVE the price of the Samyang/Ronkinon...just need to be sure it performs and will last and not lock-up on me.
Get the Tamron. However I've had some weird AF lockups aswell with my A7III, but with Sigma 85 and the Tamron 35-150. Might be the body? Usually a quick OFF/ON fixes that.
I've been waiting for Tamron to launch the Z mount version of this lens.. but I think Samyang will be ahead of the game... First one to launch the Z mount version gets my money.
I still dont understand the "complaint" and emphasis all reviewers tend to put on the variable aperture and the "only f2.0 at 35-45 mm"
You are replacing f2.8 lenses with this (usually a 24-70). You never get f2.0-2.5 at 35-79 mm with those öenses. So instead say you have the benefit of being brighter than a standard 24-70 f2.8 at 35-79 mm. That is a good thing. Not a bad thing.

I had the Tamron 70-180 f2.8 for sports photo in low light but focus was not fast enough to follow players and it was noisy… so I got the Sony 70-200 and no complains other than size (bulky) and prize. Have been longing for the Tamron 35-150 but the prize was bothering. Will get the Samyang for sure… tanks for the video.
The focus of the Tamron 70-180mm itself was the fastest I've ever seen. However it have had a lot of issues with the communication to the camera. Eye-AF was very bad with full body shots and was mostly over 0.5m off the focus frame and the communication seem to have been often very slow for fast moving objects. Too bad as it was an almost perfect lens, if it wouldn't have been these issues. I've bought the 35-150mm only because the 70-180mm have had such an inaccurate AF
I received mine today but sadly it seems to creep forward when not locked. I'm going to message their support but I'm surprised it has zoom creep.
I still like the warmer tint of the Tamron lenses. I own 2 Tamron and a Samyang Prime and the cold color on the Samyang is still not so pleasing when you looking into the camera finder...
I just sen back my 24-70 Rokinon for bad quality in the mount (it seams a common problem). It broken in my firs attempt to change it. Hope the fix this for this model…

Samyang seems to be a no brainer, the only cons is for the looks, the rings look like they've been borrowed from 2 different lenses and fitted here. And I also feel the font used for markings looks odd.
Seems to be MUCH BETTER than their very first AF lens which was the (Samyang 24-70mm F2.8) that came out of nowhere a year ago which I did not even heard of, and surprisingly is 200g more than the Sigma Art and barely any cheaper than when the Sigma is on sale, which is almost all the time.
Nice review. I'm a hobbyist photographer with sigma 35 f2, 65 f2, samyang 135 mm 1.8, tamron 28-200. If it were you, would you sell the primes to buy this lens? Considering the overlap of zoom range of the tamron which anyway I use for travel photography
Hey, thanks! If it were me, no I wouldn't. Mainly because I prefer to shoot lightweight. But that's just me - if swaping out lenses is a pain for you and you don't mind carrying the extra weight around all the time, then this would be a great alternative.
It seems better than Tamron ones. but Samyang always sent very good copy toward reviewers. lets wait and see real production objects. Exciting about this Lens

Samyang claims it to be parfocal, but it doesn't work in practice according to DAVISION. Tamron does an excellent job.

i am wondering why all the reviewers on youtube say the Samyang say it is a good as the Tamron for less yet the reviews on b&h and adorama and just about every other store say the samyang has focus issues and customization issues I just ordered another tamron 35-150 should be here the 2nd of January 2024 and it comes with a six year warranty providing you don't drop it but that is what OS (oh shit) insurance is for i think samyang is double checking versions of lens sent for review

Samyang should have almost 0 distortion. Vignette is almost identical to the Tamron.

I am a Sony shooter with all Tamron lenses. I am tempted with the Samyang. I am shooting a project that requires wide open images. The softness of the Tamron, wide open, on the long end is a major concern. The cost difference is significant too but not the deciding factor. I am not in a big rush. I can wait to see how Tamron responds to this curve ball. Go Samyang. Competition is great.
Quick question Tom. I shoot landscapes and corner sharpness is a must. Does Tamron get significantly better as you stop down on the long end? If not, then hello Samyang, goodby Tamrny!!

Could your Tamron 35-150 a decentred copy? It seems a lot worse than from my impression, especially each tree branch was ghosting into parallel lines. DPreview sample photos of Tamron are also not that bad.
