Robert Bateman was my number one influence for when I did wildlife paintings in the 80's and 90's. Have all his books signed by him at book signings when he came to galleries in Bay Area and Davis. Also saw exhibition of many works at the Cal Academy, in SF! Very nice approachable person; he even kindly, and helpfully, commented on some of my work, I had tucked under my arm, as I went to the book signings. There are many painters of wildlife now, but most of their works are too stiff ("stuffed" looking) and generally "life-less' because they have confused ultra-detail with true art, and good Painting (composition, focal point, energy, brush work, movement, a story, etc.) with a capital "P"!!!
