You asked about the origin of the story: Years ago (late 70’s) there was a book called THE FAN. It was a cleverly written book about this guy who’s in love with a Broadway star and writes letters to her every day, but her assistant never lets her read them. Because his letters go unanswered, his anger escalates and he starts killing people in her world, all hoping to get her attention. What’s really great about how they wrote the book is that the story is told completely through letters, memos, telegrams and police reports.

The actor Devon Sawa a was the character "Stan". He was in numerous movies and TV shows. Dr. Dre saw him in Final Destination and cast him for the part of "Stan". Another little tidbit is the singer Dido played the pregnant girlfriend. It's her song and her voice singing in the video. 🔥 🔥 🔥

And mgk's daughter is Mathew. That was a warning to mgk about not saying Hailie's name again Eminem just letting him know that we boths dads with daughter you don't want me mentioning your daughter by name in a song just letting him know that he knows about her. Plus he saying MGK dead career over and his daughter is going to grow up bitter blaming and hating eminem for it.
@@itskev8126 thanks, I knew all that. I'm a huge Eminem fan (or Stan, except I've never bleached my hair). I've listened to Killshot about 300 times and seen many breakdown videos. I'm pretty sure I have a grasp of all of the bars. I was just saying that since MGK is a Stan, maybe he is the original Stans little bro, Matthew.
These kids nowadays have literally no idea how freaking big eminem was when the Marshall Mathers LP came out. I know he is still one of the biggest but back then EVERYBODY knew him. EVERYBODY
Stefan Roos I first heard Eminem on an alternative radio station..My Name Is.. before he really broke and went mainstream, bought the album. He was just so funny, and his lyrics were genius. I always tease my kids that I was listening to Eminem while they were putting Spice Girls posters on the wall, just to remind them who’s cool 😎
I will always remember my buddy was big on Eminem. When The Eminem Show was being hyped my buddy got a leaked version of Without Me. This was when burning CDs was a thing and he burned that song for all our group. I was in 8th grade listening to that song on repeat.
About the whole Matthew ordeal, Matthew's story is extended in Em's song "Bad Guy." [SPOILER ALERT] So, in the song, Matthew goes along to hate Eminem. He hates him because he thinks that it was Em who killed his brother, and he wants revenge. So, the story goes that Matthew breaks into Em's house, kidnaps him, places him in his trunk, drives off, and throws his car off a bridge as a form of revenge.
“I hope you can’t sleep and you dream about it. AND WHEN YOU DREAM I HOPE YOU CAN’T SLEEP AND YOU SCREAM ABOUT IT, I HOPE YOUR CONSCIENCE EATS AT YOU WHEN YOU CAN’T BREATHE WITHOUT ME” This part always gives me chills. I personally think this is one of his best songs
I personally think this is his best song. Its the favorite of many. It created a word in the dictionary. Its a short movie. Its got 4 verses instead of the traditional 3. Dido on the hook was just perfect. I'm not even a big fan of his but this song is probably the greatest hip hop song ever made. Definitely the most creative.
"26-year-old Matthew David Hughes broke into Marshall Mathers’ Detroit home last month only to be confronted by the rapper himself, and is now being held on a $50,000 (£40k) bond at Macomb County jail in Michigan." Music video released on November 21, 2000. The lyric "You didn't have to, but you coulda signed an autograph for Matthew That's my little brother man, he's only six years old" This is freaking mind blowing!!! Also did not know until today that Matthew in the video was played by Em's younger brother Nathan.
Well, this song is based on a true story. I actually REMEMBER that particular incident from back then and when this song was released, this could be true.
@@stephsays-503 not sure Em would have used the real names. But I have heard that Stan was based on a true story years ago. It would be crazy if the guy who broke in was connected to the true story.
......the horrible correlation and connection to these tracks (Stan and Bad Guy), this last year in the midst of the Coronavirus going on, a fan of his snuck past Em's security, broke into his house, and Em was the first one to find him, no one was hurt or anything, but the fact that part of Bad Guy actually now has happened in real life basically, is scary and gives the song an extra eerie edge, along with this one. This song was of course written after Em received many fan mails.
I think a fan would do something like that I just think it is a particularly type of fan that is obsessed and act irrationally about someone they have never met before. That has just to happen to be in the public eye and fames.
Damn, I'm getting old.. I forget that this song was released 20 years ago and is technically a "classic". To me, it feels like it just came out yesterday.
Pretty soon they'll be calling Eminem's music, "Vintage Eminem". If that doesn't make you feel old, i don't know what will. Classic music can be roughly a decade, but vintage is more of a generational gap, twenty plus years... It's about that time where you might just here vintage when Eminem is brought up in a conversation. Scary thought...
The Actor's name is Devon Sawa. He was a child actor and teen idol in the 90's and started in Little Giants, Casper, Idle Hands, and Final Destination. He's a pretty damn good actor.
Urban dictionary - A crazed and or obsessed fan. The term comes from the song Stan by eminem. The term Stan is used to describe a fan who goes to great lengths to obsess over a celebrity. Also "stan" is a portmanteau of the words "stalker" and "fan," and refers to someone who is overly obsessed with a celebrity.
@@charlia7695 dude the stalker IS the fan, and yes his name is Stan, and this song has become so ingrained in pop culture that people reference this song, and Stan, as a name for a obsessed fan
Yes he invented the word...one thing about Em nobody really gets is his rhyme patterns,we all know he has bars and double entendres but he rhymes sentences,he rhymes paragraphs. He'll make every other word or every third word for example rhyme..and does syllable rhyming. He is technically the best rapper ever,on a technical stand point. I know not everyone rocks with him and that's cool, but his skill is second to none
Both are equally as sad in different prospective. Suicidal teenage girls could relate a lot more to a song from a teenage girl (who turned 18 just last year? Or 2019) rather than a man who does indeed rap facts but hits a sort of mood thats more frustrated and accepting rather than depressed and controlled you feel? It's okay if you don't understand and I get where you're coming from but it's not just about the topic, it's the genre, the mood it all contributes to a song and some teenage girls just resonate more with Billie. Although as a 13 year old teenage girl Eminem would be infact more heart-felt and realistic to me than a Billie eillish song.
@avfn ye but lots of people still relate to the story Stan... expecially the abuse part in the story where Stan beats up dido a lot maybe not as much driving of the bridge but there still a lot of relatable things in this story that can cause a lot of mental problems so while billie eillish fans suffer from depression and anxiety, where as kids who witness or feel abuse will be scarred for life suffer from depression and will be shy and timid wherever they goes, and as well the mother that will go through the abuse will suffer bad injuries, depression, anxiety, she will be paranoid to find a new bf and worst of all she’s probably gonna have to raise her kid by herself because she’s going to move out of the abusive farthers house or even worse have to give up her kid and put them up for adoption so there safe while the mum still gets beat up
The worst part is that they call themselves “Stans” when they don’t even realize the fucked up meaning behind it. I think fandoms in general would be a lot better altogether if everyone heard this.
Pull up Dido’s “Thank You”. It is the song than Eminem sampled for Stan. Dido is also “Stan’s girlfriend” in the video. She is a beautiful singer. You will be blown away by her music stylings, too.

BIG TREY I actually hate most rap and hip hop, so I can’t say much. It just doesn’t sound good, to me. Eminem is one of the exceptions. 2pac being dead does matter, tho, because Eminem can still accomplish great feats, where as 2pac cannot.
BIG TREY yes 2Pac did a lot for rap but in a whole if you say pac is better then eminem I disagree the beauty of rap is everyone feels different I understand feeling 2Pac is the better rapper but him being dead does add a bit of bias. Overall success I say em is better and he was catchy to the entire country. Biggie was the same in the sense that his music appealed to the entire country I am a Cali native and I assume you may be from the west coast if so you know west coast style music was harder to like because it’s so fit to the west period. I swear the breakdown you have is one of the most legit ones ! Your love for him really shows. I'm not American but i really do hope Eminem got the respect he deserves from the black community out there too cause he has been so influential for the hip hop scene. The way he works around the pen nobody still can touch him
You should get an award just for explaining this to your kids and passing on some of the roots of hiphop as it made the way for young rappers today. An example I intend to follow in the near future.
What a beautiful family! The looks on their faces at the end when there's just nothing left to say pretty much sums up the entire experience of this song for me.
Your daughter's face is how I imagine everyone hearing Em for the first time. YOUR face is that of the Eminem fan who's trying to turn them onto his music. Lolol. Good stuff.
"Stan" the song was based on a true story that sadly happened and also a way of saying his fans are to atractive to him and need to calm down so this would never happen again as em states"i didnt mean for this to happen the fans are to fucking in to me to die if i dont reply in time damn"later on after 5 days the interview was tooken off of any social media
He literally said “we should be together” sounds like he’s gay to me. & I’m a lesbian, lol. So there’s no issue with it but he definitely is at the very least gay for Eminem
Mekel Reen there’s more to a relationship than just sex. Like i said, he’s at the very least gay for Eminem. He would be with him; another man; therefore making him at least gay for Eminem. Sexual inclination or not.
Jada Forsee he didn’t make it clear he meant it sexually and often such obsessed people think of very disturbed forms of being with with someone and closeness that don’t involve sex.
Mekel Reen the sex aspect or NOT, he’s still saying he wants to be BE with him.. I’m confused why people are acting like the only thing to being gay or being in a relationship is sex
I love the fact that your willing to be open with your kids about the darker side of music and life cause honestly this is a dark and deep song and I love how you sit down with them and show it to them and explain a bit as it goes while also letting them come up with their own conclusion. Alot of people think being a parent is about teaching only but we as parents learn just as much from our kids as we give to them when we teach. “I just drank a 5th of vodka, dare me to drive.” Who else caught that verse from “My Name Is”? They needed to listen to some of his other songs first to get it. I’m sure there’s a few more references I don’t know about. Not only did he quote himself in this song, but he did through the “fan” of the song, which is really just a conception in his mind (unless something like this actually happened with someone) telling it to him. Just another profound layer.
"But i didnt slit her throat, i just tied her up. See i aint like you, cuz if she suffocates she'll suffer more and then she'll die too" is also referring to 97 Bonnie and Clyde, in which he slits Kim's throat and then throws her in the car
i literally just wrote a comment saying exactly this. Its such an over-looked piece of artwork which I kinda wish Eminem had done a song where its about Stanley coming back after he faked his own death, so this would symbolise him being physically outside the window of the coach.
Its crazy to think younger people haven't heard/ know the significance of Stan. Don't get me wrong, it was before their time so I definitely understand. This was awesome to see you showing this to your kids, everyone killed it bro. Its wild to think that sometime in the future ill be explaining Eminem and this song to my kids saying the same sort of things "oh yea... so Eminem was blonde back then lol"
Going through a bunch of reaction videos this afternoon/evening, remembering why I was such a big Eminem fan back in the day. I appreciate your obvious love for your kids and that you're trying to raise them with the wisdom that we all had to learn the hard way. Raising them so they can try and avoid the pitfalls of just being young and dumb, but at the same time, trying to show them the importance of culture, history, and of building off the mistakes of previous generations so we don't have to start over very time and we can hopefully be better than what came before us. Honestly, though. I had a tear come up in my eye when your daughter watched the car drive off the bridge. I was feeling her horror and empathy for the girl. The best thing about being a parent is watching your kids grow up. The worst thing about being a parent is watching your kids grow up. Also, "You ain't gotta grow a chin-fro." Classic!!

Have you notice the last part when EM said "it was you" The actor appears at the window staring at Eminem. That was classic Eminem. By the way hands down for the actor DEVON SAWA (he's the star in final destination)
It should be noted that the chorus/hook is from Dido's song "Thank You." "Thank You" is a very different song that what it sounds like in "Stan." Very different meaning. Very different tone. Dido is the actress in this video playing the wife of "Stan." And "Stan" is played by a Devon Sawa. Sawa, who still acts, was basically a teen heart-throb in the 90's. He became pretty well known for his role in "Casper" (just about every female between the ages of 35-45 today at one point wanted to "keep" him). He was in a ton of other films. Probably most well known for the Final Destination films. And yes, this is where the term "stan" comes from. The entire song is a reference to previous Emimen songs. It is impossible to explain just how massive this song/video was when it came out. The song and video were very influential and controversial. And that doesn't even touch on the craziness of Eminem and Elton John performing this song together later on.
Have you ever heard of people having different tastes in music lol...You know that’s a thing right. There is probably someone of every age who does and don’t know this song and a bunch of other songs by other artists.😂

He probably didn't actually start using it as a verb himself, but the term exists because of this song, so in a sense, he did. Tails he calling him stan. And mgk's daughter is Mathew. That was a warning to mgk about not saying Hailie's name again Eminem just letting him know that we boths dads with daughter you don't want me mentioning your daughter by name in a song just letting him know that he knows about her. About the whole Matthew ordeal, Matthew's story is extended in Em's song "Bad Guy."
[SPOILER ALERT]
So, in the song, Matthew goes along to hate Eminem. He hates him because he thinks that it was Em who killed his brother, and he wants revenge. So, the story goes that Matthew breaks into Em's house, kidnaps him, places him in his trunk, drives off, and throws his car off a bridge as a form of revenge.

I personally think this is his best song. Its the favorite of many. It created a word in the dictionary. Its a short movie. Its got 4 verses instead of the traditional 3. 14 years girls:- Belli Eilish songs are so sad
Anyone who has a brain:- have you ever listen to Stan
@@Leo-rd6ly Stan is literally a story where a guy kills himself and his pregnant wife no disrespect to billie but Stan is definitely more sad
@avfn ye but lots of people still relate to the story Stan... expecially the abuse part in the story where Stan beats up dido a lot maybe not as much driving of the bridge but there still a lot of relatable things in this story that can cause a lot of mental problems so while billie eillish fans suffer from depression and anxiety, where as kids who witness or feel abuse will be scarred for life suffer from depression and will be shy and timid wherever they goes, and as well the mother that will go through the abuse will suffer bad injuries, depression, anxiety, she will be paranoid to find a new bf and worst of all she’s probably gonna have to raise her kid by herself because she’s going to move out of the abusive farthers house or even worse have to give up her kid and put them up for adoption so there safe while the mum still gets beat up
Btw my comment wasn’t meant to offended anyone I’m just saying that’s fax

Everything about this song is a genius. That sample is haunting. And the lyrics too. And the way it address violence and obsession
hes not gay, he is just an obsessed fan , that has problems
He literally said “we should be together” sounds like he’s gay to me. & I’m a lesbian, lol. So there’s no issue with it but he definitely is at the very least gay for Eminem
Jada Forsee this level of obsession can happen without sexual inclination.

I remember I was 10ish and I liked rugrats but my mom didnt want me 2 watch it cuz she said angelika was a bad influence. I thought rap was like devil music til I was 13ish lol. So sheltered. Now I study all kinds of music from all decades and I love it. Getting old feels so surreal. I closed my eyes 4 a min and I went from a 25 yr old who partied daily 2 a 36 yr old, 25 lbs heavier, who gets sick from 2 beers and cant believe the 90s was over 20 yrs ago. That's me in the center of my profile pic and its only a 7 yr old photo. How did I go from that 2 some1 who talks about how cheap gas prices were in 2000 and has trouble standing up from a crouched position!?
@@bearsbeetsbattlestargalactica8 - Wow, sounds like my cousins. My aunt wouldn't let them watch Harry Potter or anything really that wasn't drawn or a kid's show until they were 12 or something. My mother however had me watching Nightmare on Elm Street, Fatal Attraction and movies like that when I was in the single-digit ages (she didn't just let me. She HAD me watch them). Never rode my little scooter so fast in my life, as after I'd watched Nightmare on Elm Street and had to go to badminton practice after dark, lol. A middle thing between the two extremes would probably be the appropriate thing :P
@@bearsbeetsbattlestargalactica8 I was 21 when 8 Mile came out. My parents had me when they were 16 years old in London. I was never told I wasn't old enough to watch anything or listen to anything. My Dad's mother was 15 when she had him, I don't think she ever told him he wasn't old enough for something either, so that might not be a good thing.
My kids at 16 and 14 years old now and I put some limits on them. No porn or extreme violence, I don't think kids have any business watching that sort of thing. I think my parents could have put a few more restrictions on their girls. I see it as a kindness to my kids.
My kids have heard music from a lot of generations. My daughter plays bass, drums, double bass, flute and she's started learning guitar (she attends an art school with a good music program). She's a huge music fan and listens to a lot of genre's.
Fire!!
I don’t know a father who sits and talks with their children about our past this way, most dudes just let their kids find out for themselves.
Or at least I’ve had to learn on my own, through Internet and father figures that took the time for me
Dido's "Thank You" was the perfect backdrop for this song. Great song on it's own too.
React to bad guy by Eminem in it the little brother broke into his house there is no music video tho
yeah matthew already visited em in 2012 in this song
and then in real life too
I feel like Eminem sees into the future
My name Is “I’ve been driving round this side of town for like 9 hours and 45 minutes now” do you wanna guess the total length of Eminems solo discography when the album was released? :p 🤣
Sufiyan Shaikh and the beginning of 2020 when a dude broke into EM’s House
Eminem followed up this classic with “bad guy” on his “Marshall Mathers LP2” album in the perspective of the younger brother you guys should definitely do that next if you haven’t already.
One of the BEST/ POSITIVE/ GENUINE video REACTIONS I have seen in a LONG time! !!! Slim is 1 GIFTED ARTIST !
You killed the whole point of your kids reacting.
I know he was excited and all but it was annoying to have him constantly pause and interrupt. Let the kids experience it fully man.
@@cheesedust-n3w nah if he didn't point out certain stuff it would've went over their heads on first viewing, I enjoyed seeing his passion too tbh 🤷♂️
true, the pausing was a bit annoying with him trying to explain cause they didn’t really get to react to it at all.
agreed. This isn't really a true reaction video.
Pretty much!
The actor is Devon Sawa, he was discovered first in Casper, when he played human casper in the movie. Later he played in Final Destination.
He was in Wild America and Idle Hands too, used to watch those all the time when I was kid. I like his appearance in SLC Punk as well.
Love Eminem. And I love this reaction video. And yes, "Eminem doesn't write songs, he writes movies." You got that right. Dude is a genius.
Jeeze! Can't believe this song is 20 years old! Eminem is a lyrical genius! For me, this is him at his best! Stay safe guys ✌️
When he said " and we should be together too" and his son responded with the WHAT had me rolling. LMAO
Yeah and the look of the dad too hahaha
Stan is a real weirdo
The actor is Devon Sawa. He was a popular teen actor in the 90's.
Just watching a father and his two kids bobbing their heads and feeling a song in unison, enjoying each other's company, learning about the themes within this piece of musical art got me feeling emotional. Sending love to you three!
I respect this man so very much! This is a man God bless you homie
Same.
The hook is just a sample of Dido's "Thank you" btw.
"Stan" short for "Stanley", is a name. That's where it came from. The song is about an obsessed fan named "Stan", so now people call obsessed fans, "Stan", because of this song. Didn't think i'd ever have to explain that
Stalker fan...
St anley
Stalker
st
fan
An
st-an
It suppose to be two words cut together to make context the name was for the story/song to not be out of place and then versatile
We getting old b 😂😂🤷♂️
Love the genuine love you and your children share! It shows and melts my heart. Also, the song is great, glad they appreciated it!
This song started “Stan” being A STAN of Eminem
Dido is the woman in the video and the woman singing too, the sample is from a song called “Thank You”
The guy is an extreme Stan
The guy who plays Stan is Devon Sawa who is Casper and in Idle Hands. Watch those two movies right there. Maybe Final Destination 1
You blew my mind 🤯🤯🤯🤯 with the Matthew thing
Stan is a combination of STalker & fAN...he did invent it but that's where it came from...
