I feel for your groans of pain. Don't be tight as a fishes bum... It's false economy to use solvent depleted glue (jello). The solvent is needed to weld well into the PVC. That solvent (Methyl Ethel Ketone) is nasty and evaporates out of the glue very quickly. Exposure can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, nausea, blurred vision, and may cause you to pass out. Repeated high exposure can damage the nervous system and may affect the brain. It has a high fire danger. Replace lid ASAP. I used it last week and I could taste it hours later after several coffees & dinner and that was not in a confined space. Doing that repair, first I'd buy 'Primer fluid' and new glue > Apply primer fluid and wait 30 seconds then scuff up. It softens the plastic pipe and old glue making it easier to skuff up with abrasive paper > Apply primer again both sides > Apply new glue both sides > Bung it back in and hold for a good 30seconds > Leave the confined area 30minutes to get the sickening taste of MEK solvent from your nose, lungs and mouth > Return to check pipe fully engaged and place a sheet of newspaper under > Use the basin or whatever feeds water down that line and check the next day.
